With a reported budget of $170–186 million, the film needs to earn upward of $300 million just to break even. Compounding those figures, the movie currently holds a 54% average on Rotten Tomatoes and a B- Cinemascore with audiences.  The 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival took place last week and with it came announcements for a bevy of animated films and series.  DC and Warner Bros Animation particularly stood out for a number of upcoming Batman projects. The first is a series adaptation of Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta's best-selling comic series, Absolute Batman, which Warner Bros Animation is partnering with DC Studios to develop. Joker: Laughing Riot was also announced as an adult anime series that explores the Joker in a world where Batman has been killed and will be directed by LOTR: War of the Rohirrim animator Yasuhuro Aoki. If that wasn't enough animated Batmen for you, a trailer for the movie Batman: Knightfall Part One has been released and attendees of the festival were able to see and review the film ahead of its currently undated release later this year. Finally, a kid-friendly series focusing on Krypto was also confirmed to be in the works.Prime Video has renewed animated superhero series Invincible for a sixth season. The trailer debuted for Robert Eggers' anticipated return to period piece horror with Werwulf, starring Aaron Taylor Johnson, Lily Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe.Dreamworks Animation has announced a Shrek prequel titled Donkey that has a release date of June 30, 2028. Eddie Murphy will reprise his voice role and Charlie Bean who directed the Lego Batman Movie and the live action Lady and the Tramp will direct. Netflix has given a straight-to-series order to a father-daughter espionage thriller starring Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour from Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne and A24. It and Annabelle writer Gary Dauberman has been tapped to write the third installment of Five Nights at Freddy's for Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal. A trailer for the Timothee Chalamet and Selena Gomez animated alien film we mentioned last week, Not Alone, debuted. The film comes from Illumination.Kane Parson's debut film Backrooms is getting an extended cut that will be available in theaters this Friday featuring 16 minutes of brand-new footage and will be titled Backrooms: Everything Must Go.The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, from Illumination, Nintendo, and Universal, will hit Peacock on July 30, following a 120-day theatrical-to-streaming window.Rockstar opened GTA VI pre-orders June 25, pricing the standard edition at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99. Pre orders reportedly topped 39 million units and $3 billion, even as Take Two stock dipped on pricing concerns and no day one online mode. Fans criticized the lack of a disc version and steep price hike from GTA 5. GTA 6 launches November 19.

Trolls, as presented in medieval literature, are vastly different from the creatures we encountered in our last episode’s collection of 19th-century Norwegian folktales. These Viking Age trolls are more vividly and gruesomely described, and the “troll-women,” who frequently appear, are akin to witches. We begin the show with a traditional song from the Faroe Islands, “Trøllini í Hornalondum,” telling the story of St. Olaf battling trolls on the coast of Norway. While the ballad presumably originated in Norway, it was first recorded by the Danish priest and historian, Anders Sørensen Vedel, in his 1591 publication, Hundredvisebogen, (the Book of 100 Ballads.”) While St. Olaf (King Olaf II) is regarded as the saint who drove paganism from Norway, but this struggle was ongoing with trolls continuing to embody the old pagan world as belied by various tropes — their dislike of church bells, and fear of crosses. We'll next look at an interesting case from Iceland presenting a direct conflict between a church and troll.  It was collected by the “Grimm of Iceland, Jón Árnason, a librarian and museum curator who published several collections of folktales, beginning in 1852. This one's from his second volume of Icelandic Folktales, published in 1864. Encountering trolls — St. Olaf’s Journey, fresco by Albertus Pictor, ca 1470, Dingtuna Church, Västerås, Sweden After this, we have some general comments on the historical relationship between trolls and giant (jötunn, Þurs and risi) as well as trolls and witches or sorcery (trollldom). Our remaining four stories (the medieval ones) present trolls of the Icelandic saga, epic stories written in Old Norse and relating the adventures of ancestral heroes or rulers, usually with some connection to history but with certain creative embellishments. A subset of the sagas, which take place in their own mythic timeline, the fornaldarsögur were simply written with entertainment in mind and more oriented toward magic and folklore – and trolls, so we'll lok at a couple of those. And then there's the þáttr, a sort of short story, sometimes folded into sagas, but often reproduced independently. As this is a storytelling episode, we won’t spoil the tales with plot outlines, but the sources (in order) are: The 14th-century þáttr of Thorstein Ox-leg as translated in William Craigie's 1896 compilation called Scandinavian Folk-lore: “The Trolls in the HeidarWoods.” A portion of the 16th-century Illuga Saga, translated by Philip Lavender of the Viking Society for Northern Research. The 14th-century Saga of Grim Shaggy-Cheek as translated by Peter Tunstall. The Saga of Orm Stórolfsson, as retold by William Craigie in Scandinavian Folk-lore – under the title: “The Giant on Sauðey” (Saudey). Moderator Annette Insdorf will interview Ethan Hawke after a screening of his new film, Blue Moon. The prolific actor, writer, director and musician offers a tour-de-force performance as the acerbic lyricist Lorenz Hart, whose songs include "My Funny Valentine," "The Lady Is a Tramp," and "Blue Moon." In addition to Hawke's Oscar-nominated performance opposite Denzel Washington in Training Day (2001), he is perhaps best known for indie collaborations with Richard Linklater on Boyhood (2014), Waking Life (2001), and the BEFORE trilogy (1995, 2004, 2013) – which he scripted with the director and co-star Julie Delpy. Among his other memorable films are First Reformed (2017), Born to Be Blue (2015), Good Kill (2014), Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007), Hamlet (2000), Gattaca (1997), and Dead Poets Society (1989). He has also directed both fiction and documentary, such as Wildcat (2023), The Last Movie Stars (2022), Blaze (2018), and Seymour: An Introduction (2006). From a brilliant screenplay by Robert Kaplow, Linklater elicits Hawke's greatest performance yet — incarnating the self-destructive Hart on the very night that his collaborator Richard Rodgers (Andrew Scott) has just opened Oklahoma! on Broadway with new partner Oscar Hammerstein II. Co-starring Bobby Cannavale and Margaret Qualley, Blue Moon is a revelation of Hawke's maturation as an artist.
