Please join me in celebrating Bluegrass on Roadcase this week with Sara Watking of I'm With Her!! Sara is a native of San Diego, where she began her musical journey along with her brother Sean, playing wherever and whenever they could. When they met Chris Thile and formed Nickel Creek in 1989, they formed a musical bond that has lasted decades. In the wake of the Nickel Creek hiatus of 2006, Sara went on to pursue a solo career, with her debut 2009 self-titled album produced by John Paul Jones. With her current project, I'm With Her, Sara marks over three decades of music with their latest release, Wild and Clear and Blue.Sara talks to me about those early days in San Diego and we discuss the significant DIY scene there and the impact it had on her and her brother's musical development. We also go deep into I'm With Her, the latest album, and the challenges of touring as a parent. Sara has played with just about everyone imaginable, and the Watkins Family Hour is a landmark collaborative performance project which continues to leave an impact on the Bluegrass, Folk and Americana communities.==========================================Chapters:00:00 Episode Intro with Host Josh Rosenberg04:27 Intro and Background07:30 Parenting and Touring Life10:22 The New Album: Wild and Clear and Blue13:15 Festival Experiences and Performances16:22 Collaboration in Bluegrass and Folk Music19:21 Songwriting Process and Themes22:11 The Evolution of I'm With Her25:08 Reflections on Musical Community32:12 Songwriting Process and Collaboration34:18 The Impact of Personal Relationships on Creativity35:51 Themes of Life and Relationships in Music37:51 The Joy of Performing Live39:38 Evolving Perspectives on Live Performance43:26 Musical Influences and Growth46:58 Connecting with John Paul Jones53:24 The Importance of Community in Music54:23 Episode Outro with Host Josh Rosenberg==========================================For more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Welcome back to Bringin' It Backwards, the podcast where rising and legendary artists share their real stories and spill the secrets behind their journeys to stardom. In this episode, Adam welcomes back singer-songwriter Cate Turner for an unprecedented fourth appearance—making her the reigning record holder for most visits to the show! Cate first joined us in 2021, and since then, her story has been anything but stagnant. We pick right up where we left off, diving into the whirlwind of the last few years: the release of her two-part EP, the deeply personal aftermath of losing her father, her transition from a major label to full independence, and how all of that shaped her music and identity as an artist. With Cate's signature honesty and humor, she talks about the reality of leaving Atlantic Records—what it means to no longer have the safety net (and, yes, the “Amex-wielding father” label experience), and the freeing but terrifying process of steering her own ship. Cate opens up about finding her confidence as an independent artist, the strategy behind splitting her album into two EPs, and the challenges of writing and releasing music after such a loss. We get into the nitty gritty—how she decided which songs went where, the vulnerable themes in tracks like “I Might,” and why fan connection at live shows means more than any streaming statistic. Cate also shares her no-nonsense advice for aspiring artists: get out of your own head and trust yourself, even when everything feels uncertain. If you're an independent musician, someone who's gone through loss, or just a fan of Cate's refreshingly self-aware songwriting, you won't want to miss this conversation. So, tune in, hear Cate drop some real talk, and let her story inspire your own journey. And as always, be sure to subscribe, follow @BringinBackPOD, and check out the full episode wherever you get your podcasts.
In this episode, I reconnect with drummer and percussionist Wayne Viar, a true chameleon equally at home on rudimental snare, timpani, orchestral percussion, hand percussion, and straight-ahead drum set grooves. Raised in Richmond, Virginia, Wayne followed his older brother into the school band and studied at East Carolina University under the guidance of Mark Ford. He marched in the early 1990s with Santa Clara Vanguard in the front ensemble. Those years sharpened the two traits that still define his playing: refined touch and a highly trained ear. Wayne shares how timpani work shaped his sound concept, tuning, touch, and intent, and why those lessons transfer to every instrument he plays. We trade stories from the North Carolina Triangle scene to Atlanta's deep pool of drummers, reflecting on what makes a rhythm section feel great: listening, placement, and serving the song. Wayne describes his approach to subbing as studying a band's center of gravity while giving them the feel they expect. He also shares what he learned playing percussion alongside Atlanta stalwarts such as Joe Lee, Scott Meeder, and Jon Chalden. He contrasts the football-team edge of earlier drum corps with today's more dance-oriented productions. He explains why he writes parts that are musical, supportive, and grooving, using as much as needed but no more, instead of cramming in notes for flash. These days, Wayne splits his time among theater and tribute productions, including A1A, the long-running Jimmy Buffett show he loves for its surprising stylistic range, occasional ABBA productions with original bassist Mike Watson, and writing and teaching for high school programs. Throughout our conversation, we keep coming back to process over product, rehearsing well, building reliable systems, and teaching skills that outlast any single show. It is a deep dive into musicianship, adaptability, and being the kind of player and hang people want to call again. To learn more about Wayne, visit his website.Music from the Episode:Who's Been Talking (Shannon Wickline, Wayne Viar, & Brad Williams)Thank you for listening. This video is a conversation with Charlie Hooper-Williams, a composer, pianist, and software developer, who shares insights on his creative process, live performances, the classical music world, and the impact of AI on art.Key Discussion Points* Background and Work* Charlie Hooper-Williams is a composer, pianist, and software developer who was part of the team that created the music identification app, Shazam [00:02].* He defines his musical style as part of the "post-classical," "indie classical," or "neo-classical" movement, focusing on creating music that connects emotionally with the audience [02:48].* He studied piano performance as an undergraduate at Northwestern [03:11].* Live Performances and Technology* He currently performs solo on a portable acoustic piano and utilizes a unique live visual system that he coded himself [00:18].* The system listens to what he plays and creates real-time visuals ( [19:54] ) projected onto a screen and six light towers [19:06].* His shows vary, ranging from small, intimate village halls to large festivals like Glastonbury [25:50]. He also enjoys performing in movie theaters, utilizing the massive screen and quality sound [33:49].* The Creative Process* He discusses the idea that no art is wholly new; a composer is a "sum of everything you've ever heard and done and seen" [10:09]. The artist's job is to digest those influences so that the final product is truly their own [10:24].* He finds the process of writing music includes phases of feeling his work is "terrible" ( [06:07] ), a common experience for creatives, which is why he values creative peers and mentors [07:27].* The World of Classical Music* He believes that post-World War II academic music created a split by prioritizing music that was difficult and experimental over music that was entertaining and connected with a general audience [03:06:01].* He is excited by contemporary composers like Caroline Shaw, who are experimental but still "fun and exciting" [38:43].* AI in Music* He finds AI to be a helpful tool for things like summarizing and grant applications ( [43:25] ), but he maintains a strong critical judgment when using it [42:56].* He is not yet impressed by AI-generated music ( [45:40] ) and speculates that the future will see a split between easily-generated AI background music and human-made art that people actively listen to for the sake of human-to-human connection [46:32].RecommendationsCharlie Hooper-Williams recommends the following post-classical artists:* Nils Frahm [51:22]* Poppy Ackroyd* Olafur Arnalds* Max RichterYou can find his music and updates by searching his name or visiting his website, charliehooperwilliams.com [51:55].

In this episode, I shine the spotlight on The Unfaithful Servants through a conversation with singer, guitarist, and songwriter Dylan Stone From Vancouver Island's roots scene to a week immersed at IBMA in Chattanooga, the Servants have built a sound that slips past easy labels: tight three- and four-part harmonies, fearless arrangements, and a blend of bluegrass, folk, alt-country, and Americana that still feels unmistakably like one band.Dylan walks me through the Servants' arc: his partnership with mandolinist Jesse Cobb (a founding member of The Infamous Stringdusters), the jolt of energy when fiddle phenom Quinn Etheridge-Peddon joined, and the final puzzle piece in bassist Mark Johnson. We discuss the chemistry that's palpable onstage and how trust enables them to push beyond genre boundaries while always prioritizing the song.Their new album, Fallen Angel (out October 17), captures that identity. The band converted Quinn's basement into a studio. It brought in producer Adrian Dolan to keep it honest and alive, arrangements evolving in real time, performances that breathe, and the raw cohesion of a working band. We also explore their next steps: incorporating listening-led improvisation into writing (akin to jazz school rather than “endless solo”) and planning U.S. runs in 2026 from the Pacific Northwest down the coast and inland. The title track “Fallen Angel” is out now on all platforms.Band lineupDylan Stone — vocals, guitar, songwritingJesse Cobb — mandolin, instrumental writing, vocalsQuinn Etheridge-Peddon — fiddle, vocalsMark Johnson — bass, vocalsTo learn more about The Unfaithful Servants, visit their website.Music from the Episode:Fallen Angel (The Unfaithful Servants)Real to Touch (The Unfaithful Servants)Thank you for listening! Anders Beck, the dobroist for acclaimed bluegrass-americana band Greensky Bluegrass, recently shared the story of how he stumbled into the instrument that would define his career. “I was a guitar player, getting into bluegrass, and realized flat-picking guitar just wasn’t my thing,” Beck said. “Then I found the dobro—played with a slide, lots of sustain—and I just fell in love. I played six hours a day.” Beck also reflected on the band’s longevity as they celebrate their 25th anniversary. “The reason we’re still going strong? We didn’t stop,” he explained. “We keep pushing ourselves creatively, evolving our sound, and trying new things. Our live shows are like a psychedelic rock odyssey, but on bluegrass instruments.” Over the years, Greensky Bluegrass has blended traditional bluegrass roots with innovative sounds. Beck described the evolution: “We started with the classic setup, one mic, traditional instruments. Now we’ve got amps, pedals, and experimental sounds—but the instruments are still at the core.” The band’s journey, Beck says, has been as much about friendship as music. “We’re five best friends. The band has always been constant, no matter the challenges.” Greensky Bluegrass will be bringing their signature sound to Harrisburg on October 2, marking another milestone in a career defined by creativity, innovation, and a love of bluegrass in all its forms.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Daniel Pollack-Pelzner, cultural omnivore and author of Lin-Manuel Miranda: The Education of an Artist, is back for round two and the deep dive continues! This week, Daniel tells us all about the time Stephen Sondheim visited Lin's high school dished the dirt about West Side Story with a room full of teenage theatre kids. That's where Lin learned that not even Sondheim nails it on the first try, and the messy process can lead to something even better than the original. That could be its own episode but hell no there's so much more going on this week! Among other things Daniel talks about what *he* learned while writing the book, the power of a great cliffhanger (seriously, you'll get chills!), and the importance of finding your field of other people in bee costumes. Ahem... I trust you'll understand the reference to the 90's lore without my having to name that tune. Plus, Daniel fills is in about his work on Mary Kathryn Nagle's upcoming (and currently untitled) documentary film on tribal consulting tribal sovereignty in law and theater, and the often-overlooked epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW). Aaron Fink is back—and he's bringing a fresh chapter to his already multi-faceted music journey. On this episode of Bringin' It Backwards, Adam and Tera Lisicky catch up with Aaron over Zoom in his third appearance on the podcast. This time, it's all about his new solo album, The Invisible Line, and the creative process behind it. Aaron pulls back the curtain on what it's really like to juggle projects—from his time with Breaking Benjamin, to reuniting with Lifer, recording with Earshot, and finding his artistic voice as a solo act. He dives into the realities of recording (including why he does almost everything himself), what inspires his songwriting, and how the industry has changed for independent artists. Plus, Aaron gets candid about the struggles of touring these days, the personal shifts that come with growing older, and why it's more important than ever to create for the love of the music. If you're an aspiring musician trying to make sense of how to thrive in today's music world, or just a fan of Aaron's work across his bands and solo material, this episode is packed with honest, hard-earned insight. After a short and much-needed break, I'm back with new episodes and excited to have The Lemon Twigs on the show this week! Brian and Michael D'Addario have perfected a vintage pop sound to make it their own, and their shimmery, fun vibes combine with vocal harmonies seemingly only brothers can achieve. Despite their relatively young age, they are industry veterans, and have been performing for the majority of their lives. With a musical family as a support network, they started out over a decade ago, and caught the attention of Jonathan Rado of Foxygen, who encouraged them to start playing gigs in their native NYC. With their recently released fifth album, A Dream Is All We Know, The Lemon Twigs are truly hitting their stride. The brotherly love is real with these two, and they've got an amazing story to tell. Jeff Tweedy is best known as the front man of Wilco, the rock band he formed in Chicago in 1994. In recent years, he's been working more often as a solo artist, putting out records under his own name as well as a memoir and essays on songwriting. Amanda Petrusich sat down with the singer-songwriter to talk about “Twilight Override,” which comes out later this month. Recorded with Tweedy's two sons and a number of his fellow Chicago-based musicians, “Twilight Override” is a triple album of songs centered on themes of time, aging, fear, and “making peace with something ending.” “If we're looking at the word override, what am I overriding?” Tweedy says. “I mean, twilight's beautiful . . . but you need to override your fear of it.” Tweedy performs acoustic versions of “Love Is for Love,” “Lou Reed Was My Babysitter,” and “Forever Never Ends.”

On this episode of Bringin' It Backwards, Adam sits down with TAVE—an acclaimed London-born producer and songwriter who's now stepping boldly into the spotlight as a solo artist. You might recognize TAVE's name from his Grammy-nominated work on Black's album "Since I Have a Lover," but this episode is extra special—it's TAVE's very first interview ever. Adam leads TAVE through his story, from discovering the piano at age five thanks to an abandoned upright in his family's London home, to working the church musician circuit, eventually landing gigs on world tours with acts like Mark Morrison and All Saints—all before his 20th birthday. TAVE opens up about his struggles with sight-reading, locking into the groove of live performance, and how an IT job almost kept him from pursuing music full-time. When the pandemic hit and live gigs dried up, TAVE made a life-changing pivot: focusing on production and songwriting, dedicating himself to building a legacy that would outlast any stage. That leap of faith paid off, leading to collaborations with artists like Masego, a Grammy nod, and now the launch of his own solo project—'Difference Now' being his latest track. Honest, down-to-earth, and loaded with insight, TAVE's story is for anyone who's ever wondered what happens when you back yourself, focus on your authentic voice, and decide it's time to "leave something behind." Stick around for TAVE's advice to aspiring artists—and don't forget to subscribe to Bringin' It Backwards for more behind-the-scenes stories straight from the artists who live them.
On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I catch up with the powerhouse duo Striking Matches (Sarah Zimmermann and Justin Davis). Our conversation weaves together their incredible journey, from garage jams in Georgia and formative years at Belmont University to charting their own artistic path on international stages. We talk about the early sparks: how a chance pairing at Belmont led to instant musical chemistry, their first gig at the Bluebird Café, and how harmonies, slide guitar, and raw energy shaped their sound. They share stories from their European tours, traveling light with only two acoustic guitars, and the magic of making a full band's worth of sound as a duo. We also delve into the impact of having nine original songs placed on ABC's hit show Nashville, a career-launching moment that opened doors to the Grand Ole Opry, the UK, and even collaborations with T-Bone Burnett and the late, great Michael Rhodes. We reflect on the craft of songwriting: from following Nashville's “rules” early on to breaking them with honesty and authenticity. Sarah and Justin discuss chasing their best song yet, recording and producing on their own terms, and creating studio records that capture the energy of their live shows. There's nostalgia too, remembering jam sessions with the Rosson family, watching musical heroes like Tommy Emmanuel, and feeling the support of mentors who helped shape their artistry. And, of course, we share plenty of laughs about gear disasters, sushi metaphors, and why less is often more when it comes to making music.Whether you know them from Nashville, their stirring live performances, or their new releases, this is a deep, heartfelt conversation about growth, partnership, and what it means to create music that connects. To learn more about the duo, visit their website. Welcome to the Cover Band Confidential Podcast—where the gigs are wild, the tech is cursed, and the only guarantee is a good story! This week, Adam and Dan survive everything from $11,000 plugins on sale for $70 (oops, Guitar Center!) to wireless mics with stage fright and crowds so small you can name them all. We spill the beans on band drama, tech fails, and how to keep rocking when your audience is just the bartender and your drummer's mom.Laugh, cringe, and maybe learn a thing or two about keeping your cool when the universe throws a cymbal at your head. I'm capping off the Lollapalooza Series with today's Part 3 from Chicago's Grant Park, including interviews with first-timers Malik Flint of bLAck pARty, along with Evan Ojeda and Charlie Baird of San Diego rock band benches.Malik is an LA-based artist originally from Arkansas (hence the LA and AR of bLAck pARty), who for over a decade now has been creating compelling beats mixing funk, afrobeats and hip hop with a dash of country and R&B. The excitement of this young artist has been on full display and he's cultivated a working relationship with Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino as well as Issa Rae. His latest album, The Last Dance, is out there now!Evan Ojeda and Charlie Baird are childhood pals and now make up one-half of the band benches. First timers at Lolla, these guys bring the SoCal energy to the festival. Their latest effort, an EP entitled “Kill The Lights” has put them on the map as a force in the glam rock world, and I'm excited for what's in store for this fun and super talented band from California!==============================Episode Chapters:00:00 Episode Greeting with Host Josh Rosenberg and Introducing Malik Flint04:55 Interview with Malik Flint aka bLAck pARty20:05 Malik Flint wrap-up with Host Josh Rosenberg21:49 Introducing benches24;40 Interview with Evan Ojeda and Charlie Baird of benches43:30 benches Wrap-Up with Host Josh Rosenberg================================For more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer
Lollapalooza happened in Chicago last weekend, July 31 to August 3, and I was there to once again sitting down on the couch in the Media Area with amazing artists!! For this Part 1 of my Lollapalooza Series, I sat down with Ratboys, one of my favorite Chicago bands, with whom I had an awesome conversation — and they've got a new album coming out early next year, so heads up for that!!I also loved this interview I did with the founders of French psych band, La Femme, Sasha Got and Marlon Magnée. Childhood pals from Biarritz, France, Sasha and Marlon were steeped in French surf culture and the sounds of SoCal punk and rockabilly. They talk to me about their amazing story of cross-cultural and cross-genre exploration that represents the soul of La Femme.==============================Episode Chapters:00:00 Episode and Lollapalooza Series Intro with Host Josh Rosenberg02:55 Introducing Ratboys05:30 Interview with Ratboys23:35 Ratboys wrap-up with Host Josh Rosenberg25:30 Introducing La Femme27:50 La Femme Interview43:23 La Femme wrap-up and Episode conclusion with Host Josh Rosenberg================================For more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer
Master the art of thinking on your feet and turning unpredictability into powerful communication.Being quick on your feet isn't just a performance skill — it's a communication necessity. And for Peter Sagal, longtime host of NPR's Wait Wait… Don't Tell Me, it's a craft he's honed over more than two decades in front of a live audience. In this expanded conversation from our Spontaneous Speaking series, Sagal shares what it really takes to communicate with presence, flexibility, and confidence when the script goes out the window.“My job was no longer to be funny — my job was to make funny possible,” Sagal explains, reflecting on the shift from performer to facilitator. He opens up about how structure and ritual prepare him to embrace chaos, why listening matters more than cleverness, and how he defines success not by what he says, but by what others are able to say because of him. “Preparation is key,” he notes, “but being willing to let go of that preparation and follow what's happening in the moment is really important.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Sagal and host Matt Abrahams discuss how to navigate speaking on the spot—whether you're managing meetings, leading teams, or handling high-stakes conversations—and offer a powerful reminder: the best spontaneous communicators don't control the moment—they connect through it.Episode Reference Links:Peter D Sagal Ep.197 Prep or Perish: Mastering In-the-Moment Communication (1 of 3)Ep.198 Pause and Effect: Mastering In-the-Moment Communication (2 of 3)Ep.199 Blunder Pressure: Mastering In-the-Moment Communication (3 of 3)Ep.203 No Script, No Problem: Final Secrets to Speaking Under Pressure (Bonus) Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (03:02) - Making Funny Possible (04:11) - Ditching the Script (07:26) - Pre-Show Rituals (09:41) - How to Introduce People Well (12:44) - Being Funny in the Moment (14:38) - Staying Present On Stage (16:58) - Gracious Communication (21:23) - The Final Three Questions (24:59) - Conclusion ********This episode is sponsored by Grammarly.
