As we end February I wanted to invite a few beloved friends to talk about how to celebrate black history month in a way that honors Black people. They share what this month means to them as Black people, how we can talk to our kids about it and what we should continue to think about the other 11 months of the year so that our efforts this month truly mean something. I know this conversation will both inspire you and make you think as it did me.

Released in 2016 to critical and commercial success, Zootopia tells the story of rabbit Judy Hopps in her evolving dream to police the streets of the the titular animal metropolis. Along the way, she forms a partnership with the cunning fox, Nick Wilde. While the film may have catered to younger audiences in its animation style, the strong, articulate commentary it makes on race and racism remains its most impressive feat. This week, we’re joined by Charneil Bush to discuss and review this film that is just as much creative fun as it is earnest reflection. Does an animated film succeed where more raw calls for conversation won’t? How does art help us relate to the world with more compassion, clarity and patience?
As issues surrounding race remain painful, complicated and contentious in our society, there are ways in which beliefs and behaviors bubble to the surface, unanticipated. To hone in on a specific topic, this week we’re joined by Charneil Bush to discuss a tendency of referring to one’s black friend and the social pass often presumed within that relationship. How do topics of trust and race manifest in a true friendship? How do pressures or expectations of friendship limit discussions of sensitive issues? How do societal dynamics play out even in private, interpersonal settings?

When sexual topics are brought into a conversation via joke or interjection, a common response is “Get your mind out of the gutter!” Prevailing cultural attitudes discourage us from bringing up sexual topics unless they are given a substantial and specific context. What are some of the consequences of avoiding these topics and treating them as taboo? This week, we welcome Charneil Bush to examine the underlying meaning behind this common phrase and how dialogue could alter our perspectives on sexual topics. We explore how the absence of such conversations makes it more difficult to broach the subject. What does the current discourse, or lack thereof, indicate about our understandings of one another as sexual beings?
