250 - Open Up Life's Possibilities with the Opportunity Mindset

Living Fearlessly Free with Heather Bunch

**Summary:** In this episode, we explore the concept of an "Opportunity Mindset." The main idea is to view obstacles not as hindrances but as chances for learning and growth. We draw inspiration from the movie "Zootopia" and its protagonist, Judy Hopps. Despite the challenges she faced - lack of belief from others, a physically demanding training course, discrimination, and more - Judy overcame each one with a determined spirit. We dive deep into how to adopt this optimistic mindset, which can turn any difficulty into an opportunity. We also explore the role of faith, endurance, and wisdom in this journey. Practical steps and reflections are shared to guide listeners on how to apply this in their daily lives. **Key Points:** 1. Understand the Opportunity Mindset: It is not the absence of problems, but seeing every challenge as a chance for growth, resilience, creativity, and empowerment. 2. Frame your story: The way you perceive struggles and obstacles is a personal choice. You can react with fear and discouragement, or you can respond with courage and optimism. 3. Look for lessons and opportunities: Each obstacle can be an opportunity to learn, grow, and push yourself. It can make you stronger, both physically and spiritually. Ask yourself, "What does this obstacle make possible?" 4. Engage your faith: Lean on spiritual guidance to navigate challenges. This involves asking for divine wisdom and releasing your worries to a higher power. 5. Make action plans: Reflect on how you can implement the Opportunity Mindset in your life. Identify current challenges and ask yourself how you can use them as launching pads for growth. **Links mentioned:** - *The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday - https://amzn.to/3DHGemk - Zootopia (Movie): https://www.disneyplus.com/movies/zootopia/2qgZ2OqbpIC2 - Andy Andrews (Author): https://www.andyandrews.com/ - Tony Robbins (Motivational Speaker): https://www.tonyrobbins.com/ - Romans 8:28 ESV (Bible Verse): https://biblehub.com/esv/romans/8.htm - 1 Peter 5:7 NASB (Bible Verse): https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Peter+5%3A7&version=NASB *Amazon affiliate link; I will receive a small commission if you purchase the book through this link.

News: Bob Iger talked about the company and the parks during a question and answer session at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference. He emphasized that reducing crowds in the parks was important to improving the guest experience. It sounds like part of the process to help with that would be to add new capacity and attractions to serve more guests. – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ and https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/ceo-bob-iger-talks-disney-parks-guest-experience-rethinking-pricing-strategies-and-opportunities-to-add-more-attractions/ Spring Break season has descended upon the resort. This year, it has been very interesting to see the crowds because of the on again, off again weather changes. On the nice weather days, the parks feel like they are back to the pre-pandemic levels, then just a day later with rain, the parks seem deserted. Waits on the rainy days were mostly under 30 minutes – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ Nightly fireworks have returned to the resort for the higher crowds and spring break. Usually, the fireworks are only part of the show from Friday through Sunday. Now, they are performed every night, which is a wonderful way to see Wondrous Journeys. – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ Walt Disney Imagineering were at it again showing off some of the new technology that they have been working on at a Disney Parks presentation at South by Southwest. Some of the eye-catching things included a “life size” Tinker Bell. In addition, they demoed a small dynamic robot that could bring Judy Hopps to life, along with showing off the Hulk character that was in Avengers Campus in September. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/new-look-at-life-size-tinker-bell-for-disney-parks-meet-and-greet-may-still-debut/ and https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/video-disney-parks-shares-closer-look-at-life-size-tiny-tinker-bell-technology/ The rest of Toontown opens this weekend, but another smaller part of the land has opened. EngineEar Souvenirs has opened as the attached gift shop to Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway. We expect Minnie to stay in place for at least a few weeks. – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ We talk about synergy between the Disney brands that used to happen a lot in the parks, and there is some that has come back recently. Now through April 30th at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, a special Hulu-inspired Coca-Cola Freestyle flavor will be available. The new flavor is called Hulu Fanta Suprise and helps to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the streaming service.  – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/limited-time-hulu-inspired-coca-cola-freestyle-flavor-coming-to-disneyland-resort-and-walt-disney-world/ We talked about Adventureland Day last week, but our past guest Freddy Martin, better known as “Skipper Freddy” has posted a wonderful article on this year's event and what it all entails. In this Rant/Rave episode, Conor and Caroline go down the rabbit hole into the Disney characters that are worthy (or unworthy) of icon status. Has Caroline gone mad by claiming Alice of Alice in Wonderland is too unlikeable to be such a noteworthy Disney symbol? And would you agree with Conor that Zootopia's Judy Hopps does not get the recognition she deserves as the complex, modern hero? Here's some very good advice: don't be late to this episode!DISCLAIMER: While Judy Hopps is a fictional character, we acknowledge that her role as a police officer is representative of modern policing. Although her character may hope for a more understanding and different approach to law enforcement, in our world we are not there yet. Black and Brown people continue to suffer senseless deaths at the hands of police and a broken, racist system. May 2, 2021. In today's sermon we learn more about the story from Acts chapter 8 of Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch — the foreign, dark-skinned person who does not conform to gender norms — and ask what is to prevent us or anyone from being baptized. Readings: Acts 8:26-40, John 15:1-8 *** Transcript *** In the relatively new, but definitely classic Disney movie “Zootopia,” bunny Judy Hopps has always been… different. In a world that claims to be inclusive — where anyone can be anything — Zootopia is still largely divided into predator and prey, and you are expected to fit in to whichever group you are born into. So it is assumed that Judy the bunny will do what her entire bunny family has always done — farm carrots. But Judy knows she was born to be a police officer. Her passion for making the world a better place gets her into trouble with bullies, who want to knock her down, and her parents, who wish she would settle for the easy road and not make things so hard for herself and them. In spite of the challenges, Judy does become a police officer, but finds that her colleagues don't take her seriously, and her chief relegates her to parking duty. As the story unfolds, Judy stumbles onto an unsolved case, and in trying to solve it, she becomes friends with Nick Wilde, a fox. Judy unwittingly hurts Nick deeply when her own tendency to see all predators as dangerous “others” gets the best of her. She realizes that while she has struggled to claim her place as a bunny police officer, Nick has been rejected his whole life because people didn't believe a predator like him could ever belong anywhere — and Judy herself wasn't as ready to embrace Nick the fox as she had thought. In the gospels, Jesus often calls people to recognize the walls they have put up between them and others. He shocks by making an outsider, the Good Samaritan, the hero of a parable, and eats with all kinds of people seen as “other.” Jesus is always reaching to the margins and once, Jesus himself gets called out when he refuses to help the Syrophoenician woman whose daughter is ill, and she tells him: even the dogs get to eat the scraps from the table. Of course, Jesus then heals the girl. And I have often wondered, was Jesus trying to teach us a lesson in what not to do, or did he in his humanity also need to be taught? In the early days of what would become the Christian church, chronicled in the Book of Acts that provides our first readings in the Easter season, the followers of Jesus debated about who could belong and who couldn't belong, and what they had to do to belong. The Spirit kept showing them that all people are children of God and welcome into God's promises. After the initial coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the Spirit anointed a group of gentiles, and that led to their baptism, if only because the Apostles could hardly deny baptism to people God had so clearly chosen. In the heat of debate about whether or not following Judaic dietary laws should be required, Peter had a dream in which God revealed to him that no one should be excluded from the fellowship for what they eat. Over and over, the gospel expands the circle, continually challenging us to welcome those who seem outside. The promises of baptism are for all people, but especially for those on the margins. Today's story is no different. The Ethiopian Eunuch, although he was a Jew and he carried some power and authority in the court in which he served, was an outsider on many counts. He was a foreigner, he was viewed as “exotic” because of his dark skin, and he'd been surgically altered — possibly by force — so that he was outside of gender norms. None of that prevents the Spirit from guiding Philip to head to the south, follow a deserted road, find a random chariot, and join the Eunuch as he studied Isaiah. Philip shares the gospel with him, and it never occurs to the Eunuch that it might not be for him. They pass by water, and the Eunuch speaks a profound statement of faith: “Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?” What indeed? There was water, and the Word of God. And then and there, the Eunuch and Philip claim that the promises of God have no limits. We don't know anything else of the Ethiopian Eunuch, except that he goes on his way rejoicing. It strikes me that, as an Ethiopian, dark-skinned, high court official, he is in the perfect position to carry the good news to new lands. The Spirit, I believe, didn't send Philip to the Eunuch in spite of who he was, but because he was uniquely equipped to embody the love, forgiveness, and faithfulness of a God who knows no boundaries. The Eunuch knew without question that God's promises were for him, in all his uniqueness. Judy Hopps knew without question that she was uniquely equipped to make the world a better place as a bunny police officer, no matter what anyone else thought. As colleagues and I gathered this week to reflect on these texts, we wondered, what would it look like if we lived the truth that all people really are fully included in the gospel? We realized that we pray for this every week, in the Lord's Prayer, asking that God's kingdom and will be done on earth... not just for some, but for all creation. It means letting go of needing to understand, needing to gate-keep, needing to have some control over how things look and how they are done. It means letting go of our own vision and embracing God's vision instead. We humans will never fully be able to grasp it in this life, but we do get glimpses, and it is the gospel nevertheless. My colleagues and I recognized the power of the gospel to heal and transform us and our communities, no matter how imperfectly we embody it. We shared from the witness of our own lives and those we care for that when God's expansive love is embraced and embodied in people around us, it can actually reduce the depression, isolation, and even risk of suicide that comes from being systematically cast out. The challenge of all this is that, for those of us who “fit” easily in different ways, embracing the expansiveness of the gospel, allowing the Spirit to remove the walls and barriers that leave others outside, means being willing to be uncomfortable. Judy was really uncomfortable as she faced her own prejudices and saw the harm that she had done, and she and Nick had to have really hard conversations. In the end, the walls within them and between them that kept them from being who they were created to be fell apart as they claimed their truth. And as easy as it seems for Philip to seek out the Eunuch and baptize him, that was clearly the work of the Spirit, sending and snatching and sending again. And we know from all of the stories of the early church just how much conflict, confusion, and even anger had to be worked through as the Spirit revealed herself to them. Like Judy and Nick, and the people of the early church, we today continue to come up against our own walls and barriers, and the Spirit continues to blow through and take them down because she will not be contained. Today we celebrate the good news of a God so expansive that she embraces a foreign, dark-skinned person who does not conform to gender norms, and connects us all to one another and themselves as surely as branches connect to the vine to receive life and nourishment. Like Mr. Jesse pointed out, we are connected to God, and to each other, and all of creation. The gift of this is that we can help one another feel the expansiveness and connectedness of the love of God when we can't sense it for ourselves. Beyond anything else, it is what we were created to do. Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2021, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Acts 8:26-40, John 15:1-8

The ThawedCast: Conversations About Animation

Jodi, Hannah and Philip discuss 'Zootopia' from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Released in February 2016, this film is a resounding allegory for human sociology whist providing an intriguing criminal caper plot in the tradition of action films like 48 Hrs. and Lethal Weapon. Judy Hopps is the first rabbit police officer to graduate into the Zootopia Police Department. Despite being the top of her class, she has difficulty adjusting from her rural roots into the pressures of the big city. Convinced Zootopia is a place where anyone can be anything, she forges ahead in the face of adversity from criminals and cops alike, befriending an unlikely ally in Nick Wilde the fox, in order to prove herself as an officer. Hey Everyone! Here is the last of our pre-recorded episodes before we are back with Season Two!! And it is Episode 32, not 31 as AJ said repeatedly in the beginning of the Episode. Also, there is a squeaky chair. Sorry. On this weeks episode we have a special guest, AJ's daughter Caitlin Arend! Caitlin is an actor, singer, cosplayer, and and owner of All Aglow Parties and Events in Southern California. Caitlin has a BA in Theater Arts, and many years of experience in theater, both on the stage and behind the scenes building sets and as backstage crew. She worked for Disneyland for a few years, and was "friends with" many characters like Chip and Dale, Jessie the Cowgirl from Toy Story and Judy Hopps. You can find Caitlin online in places like Instagram and TikTok. On today's episode, Caitlin is putting her Theater training to work by helping us evaluate Audiobook narrators! Several shows back, we mentioned that although most of us know that the "In Death" audiobooks are narrated by the amazing Susan Ericksen, that wasn't always the case. The first narrator for this series was Christine McMurdo Wallis. These two narrators have vastly different styles, and so we thought it would be fun to do a show where we compare and contrast the two. Caitlin is an interesting person to help us with this because it may surprise some people to learn that Caitlin has never read the "In Death" series, and knows very little about it beyond the fact that her mom has been very active in this fandom for the better part of 20 years. So, she is evaluating these recordings blind. So what we did for this Episode was make clips from two separate scenes from "Naked in Death." We have two 1 minute clips, one from Ericksen and one from McMurdo-Wallis, for each scene. Then we give our thoughts for each clip. In a weird twist of fate, Cailtin decided she liked the reading from McMurdo-Wallis more than Ericksen. She finds McMurdo-Wallis' voice more soothing. She did like Ericksen's reading of Feeney more than that from McMurdo-Wallis, because Ericksen reads Feeney with a very obvious New York accent, whereas there was no accent whatsoever for McMurdo-Wallis. Like Jen, Caitlin prefers McMurdo-Wallis' more subtle Irish accent for Roarke. Jen agrees with Caitlin on all of it. She likes McMurdo-Wallis' less "Lucky Charmsy" Roarke voice, but does prefer Ericksen's Eve. Tara really likes McMurdo-Wallis, but not for this series. She feels the pacing for the McMurdo-Wallis recordings are too slow. AJ feels like McMurdo-Wallis' Eve was just way too low key and passive, much prefering the more snappy, sarcasic Eve voice. AJ also prefers the more "Irish-y" Roarke voice and more "New Yorky" Feeney voice from Ericksen. Also, AJ feels Susan Ericksen puts more emotion into her reading. There is way more intensity in the second scene for Ericksen, and it seems more appropriate. Pacing and intensity are key with this series, and we all agreed that the faster pace (and at times more intense) of Ericksen's narrating works better for a futuristic murder mystery series set in New York. Books like these really do need faster paced narration. Then Caitlin and Jen go off fangirling a bit about Brenda Song. The second part of the Podcast is us testing out our fan interview questions on Caitlin, and she's a very good sport and answers them all. Here's what Caitlin is reading right now: Here are some of the podcasts that Caitlin is listening to: Here are some of the music that some people would be surprised that Caitlin has on her playlist:

Disney's misguided cartoon about racism (they're actually against it this time), "Zootopia," received a 2016 Academy Award nomination for Animated Feature and is currently sitting at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet the best analogy the filmmakers could come up with to approach this prickly subject was to cast the feared majority groups as predatory animals capable of "going savage" and the fearful minority groups as prey. Hmm. The fact that drawing these parallels is incredibly abhorrent somehow eluded them. The lead character, Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) is a spunky little rabbit who trades on her underdog status while constantly threatening and intimidating anyone who tries to get in her way. The secondary lead is Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman, who is pretty much the same sarcastic prick with a heart of gold that Bateman has played time and time again ever since "Arrested Development"). Zootopia's theme song, "Try Everything," by Shakira is easily one of the most annoying Disney songs ever written. It's not quite the same caliber as "It's a Small World," but it's certainly a contender. We mock this giant Apple commercial for its muddled metaphors and its terrible sense of humor, but we also wonder what exactly happened to one particular species of mammal that is eerily missing from this movie: we humans.

Paul and Arlo discuss the film's take on racism and sexism, debate its effectiveness in shedding light on those subjects, and discover some truly hideous "fan art."

Judy Hopps is a bunny rabbit from farm country who always wanted to be a police officer in the big mammal-filled metropolis of Zootopia, where all of the animals have given up their predator/prey ways in order to live in harmony and can be what they really dram to be in life -- at least, that's the ideal they strive to achieve.  She ends up getting her wish when she's hired as the first rabbit in the new-look ZPD (Zootropia Police Department).  Not being a large or sturdy mammal, she isn't taken seriously, relegated to the somewhat thankless token role as meter maid.  Nick Wilde is a sly fox in town who spends all his days working on big cons, including fleecing bleeding-heart Judy from a bit of money he parlays into much more.  Eventually, Judy leans on the highly connected Nick in order to provide information on an actual criminal case she stumbles into, and after a run-in with her tough-as-nails boss, she ends up having to solve within 48 hours, involving a missing otter.  The investigation leads to uncovering a much bigger story involving predators going back to their old ways and causing a state of fear once again among the overwhelming majority populace of prey that leads to an increasing level of mistrust toward whole groups of animals who've done nothing wrong.

Harrison Ford told Jimmy Kimmel last week that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is "really, really good." He praised his young costars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac and added, "J.J. (Abrams)  has made an incredible movie. You will not be disappointed at all. I promise you," On this week's ITMC, Tim and Anthony failed to mention that Ford was also wearing a hot dog costume at the time of the interview (it was Kimmel's Halloween show). We're not sure why this is relevant, but it must have something to do with why we haven't seen Luke Skywalker in the movie poster or trailer. But, we digress. Harrison Ford likes The Force Awakens. That's all that matters. And on a side note, we're pretty sure the first trailer for Captain America: Civil War will screen in theaters prior to Star Wars. Like you needed another reason to hit the cinema on December 18. Here's what else we're Forcing you to listen to today Inside The Mouse Castle: Asian actress Pom Klementieff is rumored to have joined the cast of James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. At the time we recorded the show, we weren't sure what her role would be. Now we believe she'll play Mantis, who's kind of a badass telepathic martial artist in Marvel canon. If true, Mantis will be quite the match-up next to Gamora and her messed-up sister Nebula. Disney announced the principal voice cast for Zootopia. We already knew about Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin as the leads Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps. Now we know that Idris Elba, J.K. Simmons, Bonnie Hunt, Octavia Spencer, Alan Tudyk and Tommy Chong are also lending their talents to the Byron Howard/Rich Moore-directed film. And yet, despite that deep roster, we're still not excited about Zootopia, which opens on March 4, 2016. We're also not too excited about Alice Through the Looking Glass, the follow-up to Tim Burton's bloated, joyless--but immensely profitable--Alice in Wonderland. Brief video teases for the upcoming film, which opens next Memorial Day weekend, have been popping up online. Meh. The one glimmer of hope that might make us care about the film is that it's being directed by James Bobin of The Muppets and Flight of the Conchords fame. Is Hocus Pocus 2 finally going to be a thing? Maybe. Maybe not. Producer David Kirschner has hinted that the long-rumored sequel to the 1993 comedy could eventually land on the Disney Channel. No word if Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy would be back as the Sanderson sisters, but all three have teased in the past that they'd be interested. Disney Infinity is giving fans of Pixar's The Good Dinosaur a peek at some of the film's characters three week's before the movie opens. The caveboy Spot made his debut this week as a playable character in the video game. His dinosaur buddy Arlo and their three T-rex cohorts are also available as ride-able Power Disc characters.  It's a good month to be a Disney collector with deep pockets. Auction house Bonhams and Van Eaton Galleries are both conducting auctions of rare (and yes, pretty expensive) Disney memorabilia. Don't worry, there's stuff you might be able to afford too. I'll have more about these two exciting events in this Friday's episode of The Mouse Castle Lounge. If you're Scarlett Johansson, you can visit Walt Disney World and ride the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror with your husband just like any normal person. You can also have your souvenir photo conveniently deleted much to the chagrin of your surprised ride buddies. Good thing there are persistent resort guests and TMZ to bring the pic to the light of day. It's actually a really cute photo.  Enjoy! www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://themousecastle.libsyn.com/rss
