Fresh off the long Thanksgiving weekend, Jim and Lauren crawl out from under their leftover Pilgrim sandwiches to talk about Zootopia 2 absolutely owning the holiday box office, how that might shape Disney's sequel strategy, and the must-have merch that is already slithering into the parks. They also dig into McDonald's massive 70th anniversary Happy Meal promotion, Disney's official holiday book guide, and a couple of doorstop tomes that are now living in the Hersey household. In the back half, Jim takes Lauren on a whirlwind tour through nearly 80 years of Disney's talking-animal history - from Song of the South all the way to Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. NEWS • Zootopia 2's Thanksgiving opening pulls in a projected 156 million dollars domestically and around 400 million dollars overseas in just five days - more than half a billion total and one of the biggest Thanksgiving hauls ever. • How those numbers stack up against Wicked for Good and last year's Moana 2, plus why Universal probably is not panicking while it waits for the inevitable Wicked sing-along edition and a newly announced Galinda prequel novel. • The debut of Gary the Snake - a gloriously weird Zootopia 2 sipper at Disneyland - and Jim's crusade to track down Nog the snow seal pup plush that was gifted to Disney Television Animation staffers. • McDonald's 70th celebration Happy Meal, featuring 70 different Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and classic character toys with two figures per box - plus online grumbling over who made the cut (hello, Clarabelle) and who suspiciously did not (sorry, Cinderella). • Disney Parks Blog's holiday book guide, from deep-dive art and history titles like the X Atencio tribute and John Landau's memoir to Moana's “What if she stole the heart?” Twisted Tale, kid-friendly atlases, scratch-n-sniff adventures, and the giant Holiday Magic at the Disney Parks and Bring the Magic Home books currently threatening Lauren's fingernails. FEATURE • A crash course in Disney's history with anthropomorphized animals - starting with the animated sequences in 1946's Song of the South and why so many artists remembered that era as their happiest time at the studio after returning from World War II. • The rise and fall of the abandoned Chanticleer project, the “Roy's Boys” money feud with Walt, and how that detour accidentally sent Mark Davis to Imagineering where he helped create icons like Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion. • How The Aristocats, Robin Hood, and even The Jungle Book paved the way for modern animal worlds - including the infamous animation recycling in Robin Hood's “Phony King of England” sequence that sharp-eyed fans still spot today. • The long development path from the shelved spy thriller Savage Seas, starring Jack Savage, to the fully realized animal metropolis of Zootopia - including John Lasseter's notes, Jared Bush's CIA family background, and the last-minute decision to swap Nick Wilde out for Judy Hopps as the true lead. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are on the case when a snake threatens to steal a book valuable to the history of Zootopia. There's more than meets the eye, however, and much adventure ensues.

Walt Disney Animation Studios has had a rough couple years (to be nice), so it should be a surprise to absolutely no one that I had very little anticipation for Zootopia 2, yet another nearly 10-year late sequel from one of the House of Mouse's big animation studios. Shakira BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Shakira has been at the center of both entertainment headlines and heartfelt family spotlights in the past few days. On November 13, she made a dazzling return to Hollywood for the world premiere of Disney's Zootopia 2, reprising her fan-favorite role as Gazelle. Instead of attending the Latin Grammys—where she was a major highlight last year and the industry was abuzz for her possible appearance as reported by Hola—the superstar opted for a very personal evening in Los Angeles, taking her sons Milan and Sasha with her for what became an instantly iconic family red carpet moment. Every major outlet from Entertainment Tonight to Harpers Bazaar captured all three in coordinated lavender outfits, a clear and clever homage to Gazelle's signature look and a nod to the film's message of unity and diversity. The red carpet was less a celebrity parade and more an affectionate family portrait, as the boys, ages 12 and 10, upstaged seasoned Hollywood veterans with their spontaneous, joyful manner. Cameras caught Milan and Sasha embracing Shakira, exchanging kisses, and charming reporters with their cheeky confidence. Shakira confirmed that her boys have joined the cast this time, voicing two of Judy Hopps' younger brothers. In interviews with outlets such as Entertainment Tonight and Good Morning America, she shared her excitement about working alongside her sons and revealed that they recorded their parts together, describing them as “very spontaneous and easy” behind the mic.Among celebrity watchers this was not just a cute family outing but a sign of the next generation stepping into the limelight. Milan's musical talents were mentioned with pride—he's already writing songs on piano, often using music as an emotional outlet since his parents' split. Sasha, described as both creative and athletic, designed the cover for Shakira's 2022 single Monotonía and is enthusiastic about voice acting, hoping for more roles in the future. Milan and Sasha have appeared in their mom's videos and public events before, including the 2025 Grammy Awards, but this animated debut is being treated as their biggest Hollywood moment yet.Social media lit up after their appearance, with fans praising Shakira for prioritizing her children and the trio's show-stopping lavender looks. The press followed up with coverage noting the maturity of Milan and Sasha despite public family challenges. Zootopia 2, set for release November 26, has gained additional buzz thanks to Shakira and her sons, and entertainment outlets are predicting this will be one of Disney's top films of the year. Her latest album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, inspired by her journey post-separation from Gerard Piqué, continues to ride high on the charts while her world tour closes out this December, with fans celebrating her evolution from global pop star to devoted mother and children's role model. In every major headline and platform, Shakira's message remains clear—her sons are her greatest pride and inspiration, and together they shine brighter than ever on Hollywood's main stage.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI

At a recent Disney panel at the South by Southwest conference, Imagineers introduced a robotic rabbit wearing a helmet and roller skates. Orlando Sentinel tourism reporters Katie Rice and Dewayne Bevil discuss the robot, modeled after the character Judy Hopps from Disney's 2016 animated film “Zootopia,” and when it might show up at Disney parks. Also on this episode, Tron Lightcycle / Run enters its soft opening phase before the Magic Kingdom ride's official debut April 4 and construction work continues on Villain-Con Minion Blast, an attraction based on “Despicable Me” characters, at Universal Studios theme park. News: Bob Iger talked about the company and the parks during a question and answer session at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference. He emphasized that reducing crowds in the parks was important to improving the guest experience. It sounds like part of the process to help with that would be to add new capacity and attractions to serve more guests. – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ and https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/ceo-bob-iger-talks-disney-parks-guest-experience-rethinking-pricing-strategies-and-opportunities-to-add-more-attractions/ Spring Break season has descended upon the resort. This year, it has been very interesting to see the crowds because of the on again, off again weather changes. On the nice weather days, the parks feel like they are back to the pre-pandemic levels, then just a day later with rain, the parks seem deserted. Waits on the rainy days were mostly under 30 minutes – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ Nightly fireworks have returned to the resort for the higher crowds and spring break. Usually, the fireworks are only part of the show from Friday through Sunday. Now, they are performed every night, which is a wonderful way to see Wondrous Journeys. – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ Walt Disney Imagineering were at it again showing off some of the new technology that they have been working on at a Disney Parks presentation at South by Southwest. Some of the eye-catching things included a “life size” Tinker Bell. In addition, they demoed a small dynamic robot that could bring Judy Hopps to life, along with showing off the Hulk character that was in Avengers Campus in September. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/new-look-at-life-size-tinker-bell-for-disney-parks-meet-and-greet-may-still-debut/ and https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/video-disney-parks-shares-closer-look-at-life-size-tiny-tinker-bell-technology/ The rest of Toontown opens this weekend, but another smaller part of the land has opened. EngineEar Souvenirs has opened as the attached gift shop to Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway. The new shop is very themed to trains, including a train that travels around the store above guest's heads. The shop carries a lot of Toontown and Runaway Railway attraction merchandise. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2023/03/10/disney-opened-a-new-store-today-come-check-it-out/ and https://www.micechat.com/349905-disneyland-toontown-merchandise-engineear-souvenirs/ St. Patrick's Day is this Friday and of course, Disneyland has some treats to help celebrate! Guests can pick up some shamrock-shaped rice crispy treats, green stuff at Red Rose Tavern, a cupcake and donut at Craftsman Grill at the Grand Californian Hotel, and a cocktail at the Hearthstone Lounge though March 19th. Downtown Disney also has an assortment of options for the holiday. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/full-list-of-st-patricks-day-2023-food-beverages-coming-to-disneyland-resort/ and https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ Sunday, April 9th is Easter and that can mean only one thing: Handmade Chocolate Fudge Easter Eggs are back! Every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday until Easter, guests can pick up an egg for $12.99 at the Candy Palace. If you don't want that much sugar, you can just watch Cast Members make them in the window of Candy Palace. No word on the flavors for this year just yet. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2023/03/10/disneys-famous-chocolate-easter-eggs-are-back/ and https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ Minnie has once again returned to welcome guests to Disneyland! The Mickey floral has been replaced by the Minnie floral for International Women's Day, which was on March 8th. We expect Minnie to stay in place for at least a few weeks. – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ We talk about synergy between the Disney brands that used to happen a lot in the parks, and there is some that has come back recently. Now through April 30th at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, a special Hulu-inspired Coca-Cola Freestyle flavor will be available. The new flavor is called Hulu Fanta Suprise and helps to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the streaming service. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/limited-time-hulu-inspired-coca-cola-freestyle-flavor-coming-to-disneyland-resort-and-walt-disney-world/ We talked about Adventureland Day last week, but our past guest Freddy Martin, better known as “Skipper Freddy” has posted a wonderful article on this year's event and what it all entails. To read all about it, check out the link in our show notes. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/khaki-crowds-descend-on-disneyland-for-adventureland-day-2023/ Discussion Topic: Don Morin – Founder and Host of PNW Mouse Meet Since 2009 Don and his team have been creating a magical experience for thousands of Guests. “Passion, Disney Fandom and giving them more than they expect are key ingredients to our success!” The PNW Mouse Meet is an unofficial Disney Fan Event that was created by Disney Fans FOR Disney Fans. It's the show where we talk about DC! Marvel! And our favorite: James Gunn! But really this episode is about Judy Hopps. Don't email us. Don't insult Mason. Don't give us money. Just listen about DC/Marvel and James Gunn.
In this Rant/Rave episode, Conor and Caroline go down the rabbit hole into the Disney characters that are worthy (or unworthy) of icon status. Has Caroline gone mad by claiming Alice of Alice in Wonderland is too unlikeable to be such a noteworthy Disney symbol? And would you agree with Conor that Zootopia's Judy Hopps does not get the recognition she deserves as the complex, modern hero? Here's some very good advice: don't be late to this episode!DISCLAIMER: While Judy Hopps is a fictional character, we acknowledge that her role as a police officer is representative of modern policing. Although her character may hope for a more understanding and different approach to law enforcement, in our world we are not there yet. Black and Brown people continue to suffer senseless deaths at the hands of police and a broken, racist system. Poor Unfortunate Podcast supports our neighbors of color, the Black Lives Matter movement, and all people that seek to end police brutality and the racist institutions that enable this violence.
