"I've learnt a lot from the pandemic just to slow down" This week I'm chatting with the wonderful Hannah Gorman. Hannah is a mum, step-mum, blogger and advocate for all things eco living. As well as sharing her own journey to a more sustainable lifestyle Hannah's blog is filled with inspiration for embracing eco-friendly living as a family in a manageable way. In this episode Hannah shares how she has created a minimalist stash of cloth nappies and how this has changed over time. We also have a really great chat about how to resist the temptation of buying more and more beautiful prints (and the prints that Hannah simply couldn't resist). But we also keep it real, discussing the challenges of minimalism including creating a maternity wardrobe that doesn't include fast fashion, with Hannah sharing her tips for buying clothes for pregnancy and breastfeeding. Hannah shares her experiences of being pregnant in a pandemic and the upsides to lockdown life and how her perspective on life has changed. Hannah and her family had Covid-19 over Christmas and her experience is reassuring for anyone worried about how to cope with isolating at home with a toddler. Finally we chat about eco-swaps and the stereotypes that come with sustainable living and how we definitely are not crusty hippies. Things mentioned in this episode: Reusable nappies Cloth sanitary pads Extinction Rebellion Having a minimalist stash of cloth nappies The joy of secondhand baby clothes Letting your friends know you are open to having things secondhand Why you don't need breastfeeding specific clothing Covid-19 Allotment gardening Natural deodorant Stereotypes about being eco-conscious Joe Wicks Let's carry on the conversation over on Instagram Or come say hello over at www.aminimalistmother.com  You can find Hannah @hannahlgorman on Instagram and at www.hannahlgorman.com

Paul Crebar, Production Manager from Renewfest.org.au (6-7 May 2017), among many other things, speaks about the potential for parenting as an investment in our future, rather than purely work. Paul quotes Dr Marion Rose: "Responding promptly to their physical needs and treating their bodies with love and respect means that they learn to respond promptly to their physical needs and treat their body with love and respect, and that loving respect then gets generalised so that they also treat other people’s bodies and the physical world with love and respect too."And discusses the work of Robin Grille, author of "Parenting for a Peaceful World" and "Heart to Heart Parenting".Paul would like to see a society that supports parents to spend the time needed with their children to raise them to secure and happy individuals, ready to support others, and the planet.Other references:* John Abbott from the 21st learning initiative: http://www.21learn.org* The Dunedin Study: http://dunedinstudy.otago.ac.nz/View documentary at: http://www.sbs.com.au/topics/science/humans/article/2016/05/24/exceptional-scientific-study-thats-been-going-over-40-years* John Campbell: "Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only doors."* Renewfest.org.au* Luminousyouth.comAired on 99.9 BayFM on Monday 24 April 2017. [53] How And Why Children Need To Play Outdoors

When our children grow up and look back on their most treasured childhood memories, what will they remember? Will they have memories of climbing a tree as high as they’ve ever been before, or riding a bike down a hill so fast they thought they would never be able to stop? Will they remember having tea parties in a secret hiding spot in the garden, or carting all your kitchen pots and pans outside so they could make mud pies? These are our childhood memories. We grew up playing outside.  Adventures were limitless. We weren’t constrained by time or other activities, homework, or our parents. It was free play outdoors. It was spontaneous, exhilarating, fun, and exactly how we wanted to play. This was nature play and for most of us, the best time we ever had. Two decades on, this type of play is no longer the norm. Sadly, our children spend less than two hours a day outside, one in four have never climbed a tree, one in three have never planted a garden, and the area in which they can explore, has shrunk by 90%. Nature play is vital for children’s development, and for their health, happiness, and well-being. This week I’m joined by Sarah Sutter from Nature Play SA. Sarah is on a mission to make unstructured outdoor play in nature an everyday part of childhood, and in this episode she shares how and why we need to get our kids back outside.           Last week I opened the doors to Self Sufficiency In The Suburbs...a new online club that provides the support and the info you need to create a sustainable home without turning your back on the modern world!
