Join us as we talk to Chris Clarke.Chris was 36, fit, healthy, and living an active life with his young family in Sydney's Northern Beaches when a family holiday to Byron Bay changed everything. What started as a gastro bug quickly escalated into emergency hospital transfers, surgery, and a diagnosis that no one saw coming — Stage 4 bowel cancer. In this episode, Chris shares the raw reality of navigating a life-altering diagnosis with no symptoms, no family history, and no warning signs. Recorded while hooked up to his 12th and final round of chemotherapy, he opens up about undergoing major surgery, the physical and emotional toll of full-dose treatment, the invisible mental weight of cancer.Chris's story is also one of extraordinary resilience and advocacy. Mid-treatment, he ran a full marathon coming off a chemo cycle and returned to treatment just two days later — raising over $20,000 for bowel cancer awareness in the process. Now, he's using his voice to push for change, appearing in media, lobbying at Parliament House, and advocating for earlier screening access for young Australians. This episode is a powerful reminder that cancer doesn't always look the way we expect it to — and that no symptoms does not mean no cancer.June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, and Chris's story is one every young Australian needs to hear. Some resources and links below:https://www.bowelcanceraustralia.org/Fundraising: https://challenge.bowelcanceraustralia.org/page/ChrisClarke-94758725 Hosted on Acast. Send us Fan MailIn this episode, Chris sits down with Patti Lowry to hear the remarkable story of a life lived across continents and decades of change. Born in England during the war and raised in Canada, Patti reflects on losing her mother early, travelling through Europe in the 1960s, hitchhiking across Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, marrying in Jerusalem, and eventually making her way to Australia. Mysterious disappearances, unsolved deaths & terrifying stories - Is a killer stalking Byron Bay? And could there be more than one?In 2019, 18-year-old Belgian backpacker Theo Hayez vanished after a night out in Byron Bay and was never seen again. Since then, the disturbing death of Jackson Stacker and the mysterious cases of Hugo Palmer and Erwan Ferrieux, among others, have become part of a chilling theory that a serial killer may be stalking northern New South Wales. As social media speculation collides with real police investigations, stories of alleged close calls and suspicious encounters continue to emerge. Are these tragedies connected - or has internet-fuelled fear created a modern Australian myth? In this episode, Tim & Xanthe separate fact from speculation and explore the stories that continue to terrify locals and travellers alike. Yet for many women, it remains surrounded by shame, silence, misunderstanding, and disconnection.Together, we discuss why so many women feel disconnected from their bodies, how stress and trauma can become stored in the pelvic floor, and the impact this can have on everything from menstrual health and intimacy to menopause and overall wellbeing.Lisa also shares practical insights on breathwork, embodiment, nervous system regulation, and the importance of creating space for radical self-care.Whether you're navigating menstrual cycles, perimenopause, menopause, pelvic health challenges, or simply want to develop a deeper connection with your body, this conversation offers a powerful invitation to reconnect with the wisdom that has been within you all along. In this episode, you'll discover:Why the pelvis is often referred to as a centre of feminine power and wisdomHow stress, trauma, and shame can affect pelvic healthThe connection between the pelvic floor, nervous system, and emotional wellbeingWhy many women experience a wake-up call during midlife and menopauseHow breathwork and gentle movement can help you reconnect with your bodyThe importance of radical self-care for long-term health and vitalityThis is a conversation about reclaiming your voice, honouring your body, and discovering the magic that exists within every woman.Listen now and explore why the female pelvis may hold more power than you ever realised.____Lisa Fitzpatrick is a women's health educator, physiotherapist, speaker and author of the forthcoming book Sexy Menopause — a bold reframe of midlife as a time of sensuality, wisdom, healing and feminine power rather than decline. With decades of experience in physiotherapy and a special interest in pelvic and sexual health, Lisa is known for blending evidence-informed women's health education with soulful conversations about embodiment, intimacy, spirituality and emotional healing. Her work explores the powerful connection between the pelvis, nervous system, sexuality, creativity and self-worth.Based in Byron Bay, Australia, Lisa writes and speaks about menopause, pelvic health, relationships, post-traumatic growth and the reclamation of feminine identity in midlife.Through her Substack, speaking events, podcast interviews and clinical work, she invites women into a more empowered and deeply embodied relationship with themselves and their bodies. Her upcoming book Sexy Menopause challenges outdated cultural narratives around aging and opens a new conversation about desire, vitality, confidence and awakening in the second half of life. You can find out more here:Sexy Menopausewww.instagram.com/sexy.menopausewww.facebook.com/thenewfeminineleader

Send us Fan MailIn this episode of Our Byron Community, Chris sits down with Mel McPherson for a deeply personal conversation about adventure, reinvention, creativity, and finding belonging.Growing up on Sydney's Northern Beaches before moving through Avoca and eventually Byron Bay, Mel reflects on the chapters that shaped her life — from boarding school and film school to working alongside legendary surf filmmaker Jack McCoy on Blue Horizon, and building a career behind the camera across television, surf films, adventure productions and international events.Mel also shares stories from her years competing in surf boat rowing, winning four Australian titles, and explains how surf club culture gave her a lifelong sense of community and connection. The conversation explores much deeper themes too — leaving behind the life she thought she was “supposed” to want, navigating heartbreak and major life changes, choosing a different path, and ultimately finding a place in Byron where individuality, creativity and intuition could thrive.Chris and Mel also dive into her passion for restoring old homes, including the remarkable transformation of a century-old abandoned farmhouse "Longfield" in the Byron hinterland that many locals knew as the “haunted house on the hill.”An honest, thoughtful and inspiring conversation about trusting intuition, embracing change, and creating a life that feels truly authentic.

This week, I'm joined by Alexa Roetger, better known to many as Nurse Lex — founder of Aestheticá Byron Bay, registered nurse, skin expert, and one of those rare women whose work is deeply grounded in both science and soul. Publicly, she's built a respected Byron Bay clinic known for its holistic, less-is-more approach to skin. Privately, her story is one of resilience, reinvention, grief, motherhood, and learning to trust her own philosophy in an industry obsessed with trends. (Aestheticá, Byron Bay)In this conversation, Lex shares how she went from working in high-pressure clinical nursing to creating a business that helps women feel more at home in themselves — not more “perfect”, just more aligned. We talk about the emotional side of aesthetics, the moment your reflection no longer feels like you, and why so many women aren't really chasing youth at all, but recognition. We also go deeper into the realities of building a business while becoming a mother, the quiet power of word of mouth, and the grief that can reshape how you see women's health, hormones, ageing and care. It's a conversation about skin, yes — but also identity, intuition, and what it means to support women honestly. In this episode, we explore:Lex's path from nursing into aesthetic medicineThe surprise motherhood story that unfolded while she was building her clinicWhy she believes skin health should come before trendsHer thoughts on barrier repair, regenerative treatments and respecting the skinThe emotional impact of perimenopause, menopause and not recognising yourself in the mirrorWhy the best practitioners aren't always the loudest onlineWhat it takes to grow a trusted business through integrity and reputationYou'll come away with a deeper understanding of skin, but also a deeper compassion for yourself — especially if you've ever felt like your outer self stopped matching the person you know you still are inside. If you loved this episode, I'd be so grateful if you left a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. It helps us reach more women who need these conversations.A special thank you to @pulsetto.tech, our season sponsor. Use BEAUTICATE for 15% off at pulsetto.tech
Send us Fan MailIn this episode, Chris sits down with Cameron Arnold — long-time local, tourism operator, and one of the key figures behind the evolution of Byron's visitor economy. They talk about Cameron's early years growing up in Sydney, losing his father young, and finding his way through island life, hospitality, and eventually into Byron Bay in the early '90s. From running hotels and building one of Australia's first festival glamping operations to decades spent shaping tourism across the Northern Rivers, Cameron shares a lived perspective on how the industry has changed. The conversation explores the realities of tourism in a place like Byron — the opportunities, the pressures, and the need for clear direction around what kind of destination this community wants to be. They also get into the idea of “product,” what's missing locally, and how culture, environment, and community can be better reflected in the visitor experience.A grounded and insightful conversation about tourism, community, and the future of the Byron Shire
Words and interview by: Kyra JadeComing up very soon in May, Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls will be joining long time buddies Bowling For Soup on their Bowl Your Bones Australian Tour. Frank Turner graciously jumped on to chat with HEAVY MAG before making the long journey to our shores!Luckily this isn't Frank's first time visiting us, he's played some great shows and festivals in Australia over the years. We spoke about playing the iconic Byron Bay Bluesfest in particular taking a moment to reminisce on what it was like and being a part of the artist community. According to Frank the news about Bluesfest collapsing, AKA another tombstone added to Australia's 'festival graveyard', has been shared and felt all around the world. It's nice to hear that our little Byron Bay festival had such a positive impact on international visitors and I hope one day we can fill those shoes again with a new music haven. This particular interview was so much fun to research. When looking up what Frank Turner has been up to, I was hit with some crazy stats. Things like casually travelling to 50 states in 50 days in the US, 15 cities played in 24-hours and 24 shows in 24-hours in London. Along with having his own annual festival Lost Evenings that's a force in itself and massive accomplishment, he's also checked off playing Wembley and Alexandra Palace to an enormous amount of adoring fans. What I was most impressed about was finding out that Frank actively donates his time and fundraise for charities close to his heart like protecting grass root venues, mental and community health support and taking on a massive project to restore housing in Sierra Leone after being destroyed by floods. Yeah I know, I'm wondering what the fuck I've been doing with my life too. Remind me never to play two truths and a lie with this guy! All jokes aside, Frank is an amazing person. It's very rare to see people put their money where their mouth is and I have huge respect for the work he's done. There's plenty of Easter Eggs in the full interview, you'll just have to watch it yourself to find them. Yes, I left my stuttering ass in there because although I'm an embarrassment to myself; I'm only human. I get nervous and sometimes can't get my words out but it's important to be real in a world where people only want you to see them through their ‘curated lens of perfection.' Luckily this time I had Frank Turner sitting there with a kind smile on his face while casually rocking his bath robe. Dress for the job you want, right?! Genius. I took a leaf out of his book, if he's giving off the ‘zero fucks' chill vibe, then I am too.Humans aren't perfect and we should all be a little kinder to ourselves.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Most e-commerce founders treat influencer marketing and community like two separate strategies — two separate budgets, two separate teams. But that split is exactly why so many brands hit a ceiling they can't explain. Here's the problem: influencer marketing is a reach play. Every time you want that reach, you pay for it again. Community works differently — when customers feel genuinely connected to your brand, they come back without you paying to reach them. In this episode, I break down what Fate The Label did over eight years that turned their community into a business asset so valuable that Bondi Sands, Fount, and other major brands paid to be in the room with them — and what it means for how you should be thinking about your brand right now. Here's what you'll take away: Why community is an asset that compounds — not a feel-good strategy that's hard to attribute to revenue How Fate The Label's "Fate Estate" festival event in Byron Bay was eight years of deliberate community-building made visible The real economics: why a customer embedded in your community has dramatically higher LTV than one who bought from a single influencer post Why treating influencer and community as separate budgets is the mistake holding most brands back How to start thinking beyond your next campaign — and what strong community makes possible If you're running influencer campaigns but not building anything between them, this episode will show you exactly what you're leaving on the table — and how to start changing that. Steve left us a voicemail on Monday, he was struggling to maintain his focus when he was close to making par - which he's never done before - he'd get nervy, and his game would fall away. You're in sales. Even if your job title has nothing to do with sales, you are selling every single day. Ideas, proposals, budget requests, buy-in. The only question is whether you're any good at it. In part two of our chat, I sit down with Sabri Suby, founder of King Kong and a shark on the most recent season of Shark Tank Australia, to get into the skills that have helped him close over $300 million in deals. We cover how he trained himself to communicate with clarity and authority, why he believes the video sales letter is the single most powerful tool any business can have, and the negotiation mistakes that cost people deals before they've even started. Whether you're pitching to a client, selling an idea to your leadership team, or trying to get your team bought into a new direction, this episode will change how you think about communication. Sabri and I discuss: How Sabri built his communication skills from scratch, starting at 16 in a Byron Bay call centre The "game tape" method: why watching and listening back to yourself is the fastest way to improve How to eliminate filler words and why pausing is more powerful than filling the silence What a video sales letter is and why Sabri believes it's the most leveraged tool in any business How to apply the VSL approach inside a corporate setting, from pitching ideas to running internal meetings Why the deal is closed in the discovery, not the close The one mistake almost everyone makes going into a negotiation Why you should always negotiate price and terms separately Key quotes "Communication is the number one superpower that you can ever get." "Whether you like it or not, you're in sales. Everything that you want is a commission." Connect with Sabri Suby on Instagram and LinkedIn and check out KingKong. Born in 1984, Kai Neville came to surfing at age 11 on the Sunshine Coast, where his dad pushed him into his first waves. He loved it, aspired to be a pro, but soon realized he might be better off behind the camera rather than in front of it. He got a job at McDonald's, saved up for a High-8 Sony Handycam, and started creating short surf films, which led to a job making promo DVDs for Australia's Surfing Life magazine, and then a gig working with renowned filmmaker Taylor Steele. Under Steele, Neville got a crash course in surf filmmaking when he worked on 2008's Stranger Than Fiction, for which he was a videographer and editor. Neville's first major surf film, 2010's Modern Collective, landed with a major splash. Not only did it announce a group of surfers that would define the decade to come—Jordy Smith, Dane Reynolds, Dion Agius, Yadin Nicol, Mitch Coleborn, Dusty Payne, and Craig Anderson—but it announced Neville's singular vision as the lenspiece of a new generation. Then came Lost Atlas in 2011, Dear Suburbia in 2012, and Cluster in 2015—all of them oozing with innovative surfing. The Neville thumbprint is distinctive: He has a love of unbridled aerialists. His musical tastes are broad and experimental. His titles are also as eclectic as his eye. For instance, his shorts: "The Quieter You Are, The More You Can Hear." "Welcome Elsewhere." "No One Knows Me Like the Ocean." Along with his surf films, Kai is an accomplished commercial director and photographer, working with brands like Corona, Nike, IWC, Schaffhausen, and Shiseido. He also loves print media, and co-founded What Youth with Travis Ferre. Today, Neville lives with his wife and two boys in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, not far from Byron Bay. In this episode of Soundings, Neville talks with Jamie Brisick about chasing creativity, learning his trade under Taylor Steele, the magnetism of misfit surfers, the art of titling and soundtracking, his enduring love for print, and the grind behind some of his most iconic films. Send us Fan MailYour product is good. Your packaging was too — once. But something's shifted.Maybe your range has grown and the system hasn't kept up. Maybe you're pitching to bigger retailers but your pack still has a farmer's market feel. Maybe sales have plateaued and you can't put your finger on why.In episode 155 of the Foodpreneur with Chelsea Ford podcast, I chat with Natalie Townsend, founder and creative director of Griffin Grace, a brand and packaging studio that works with founder-led CPG brands across food, beverage, beauty, and wellness. You may remember Natalie from episode 71 where we covered building a brand from scratch. Today we go deeper into the refresh: what to do when your packaging is holding your brand back.Tune in to hear Natalie share:
Episode 05: The Same Pattern in a Boho Dress: What Happens When You Manifest the Dream - and the Old Loop Follows You ThereThis episode is for you if:— You've manifested something you really wanted - and found the same patterns waiting for you there— You've gone through a season where everything looked right on the outside but felt wrong on the inside— You've been through a slow, private realisation that you were the common denominator — and didn't know what to do with that— You're somewhere between hope and inevitability, and you need to hear that the gap is normalIn this episode, we explore:— What happens when you manifest the outcome but haven't changed who you're being— The difference between manifesting something and becoming someone— The blame stage - and the uncomfortable turn inward that follows— What the real identity work actually looked and felt like, from the inside— Why the 'oh shit' moment is often the beginning of everything— The shift from hope to quiet determination - to inevitabilityThis is a waking-up story. Karli sold everything, hit the road in a caravan with her family, and manifested the big dream - only to find the same patterns waiting for her in Byron Bay. In this episode, she shares the late nights alone with a book, the quiet moment that changed everything, and what the real work actually looked like when she finally turned inward. This isn't a story about things going wrong. It's a story about finally understanding how they work. You don't need to do anything with this episode. Just notice what stays with you after listening. That's usually the part that matters.

Yet modern coffee farming in Australia has been developing for more than four decades. In this episode, Rebecca explains how the modern Australian coffee industry began in the 1980s, when a small number of growers in northern New South Wales and far north Queensland began planting Arabica coffee commercially. She shares how her own family became part of that movement, planting coffee behind Byron Bay and helping establish one of the early farms in the region. The conversation also reaches further back into history, examining Australia's little-known coffee-growing past in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when coffee was grown successfully enough to win awards in Europe before the industry faded. Rebecca explains how that historical record gave early growers confidence that quality coffee could once again be grown in Australia. We also explore what made Australia's coffee sector different from the beginning. Many of the early growers were not generational farmers but people entering agriculture after careers in other industries. That shaped the way farms developed, how value-adding became part of the business model, and why some growers moved into roasting and direct sales rather than simply exporting green coffee. Rebecca also reflects on how Australia's volcanic soils, cooler subtropical climate, and longer ripening periods created the foundation for a distinctive coffee-growing environment. At the same time, high labour costs and rising land values made profitability far more challenging than in many traditional producing countries. This episode sets the foundation for the series by explaining where Australian coffee farming came from, why it remains relatively small, and why it matters in the wider global conversation about coffee origins, value creation, and farming viability. In the next episode, we look at where Australian coffee is today, focusing on terroir, climate, varietals, and the distinct flavor profile of Australian-grown coffee.Connect with Rebecca Zentveld and Zentveld's Coffee Farms here: https://www.zentvelds.com.au/ https://www.instagram.com/zentveldscoffee/ https://www.agca.au/***************************************About Map It Forward The Daily Coffee Pro is produced by Map It Forward, supporting coffee professionals globally across the supply chain.Website: https://mapitforward.coffeeMailing list: https://mapitforward.coffee/mailinglistPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/mapitforwardInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mapitforward.coffee/Contact: support@mapitforward.org

In this episode of Crime Bit with Danelle Hallan, we examine the 2019 disappearance of 18-year-old backpacker Theo Hayez in Byron Bay. After a night out, he was asked to leave a bar and was later seen on CCTV heading toward the beach as his phone data showed a short, unusual route. With no confirmed sightings after that, investigators weighed accident theories against possible third-party involvement. It shows how fast a case can stall when the digital trail ends and no witnesses come forward.

This week we sit down with Jes Saddington! Mama of two, Byron Bay local, and founder of cult-favourite linen label Dazed but Amazed. One of Tez's Byron homies and a BFF for life, Jes and Tez dive into the community they've built in the Bay; sun-soaked surf and skate evenings, never-ending sleepovers, and Prairie's very serious crush on Jes's husband (aka “my marriage”). We talk business evolution too, including the new directions Dazed is exploring, like introducing a cotton blend alongside the iconic tonal linen sets the brand is known for. Jes opens up about off-grid jungle-esque living, raising two nature-loving boys, and why she takes intentional hibernation breaks from work to recalibrate her life and creativity. Plus, Jes shares candidly about her postpartum recovery trauma, undergoing two reconstructive surgeries and the long healing road that followed.
