How do our own childhood wounds shape our parenting? Certified conscious parenting coach Shelly Robinson reveals that our most triggering moments with our children often stem from unhealed parts of ourselves - even when we had seemingly idyllic childhoods.Through a powerful story about a bath time battle with her four-year-old that escalated into screaming, Shelly shares how this moment became her wake-up call. "I didn't want to do that ever again," she explains, describing how the incident led her to discover that her disproportionate anger wasn't about her son's behavior at all, but about moments from her own childhood when she felt unheard and insignificant. The conversation explores practical strategies for breaking generational cycles, including understanding developmental expectations, practicing self-awareness before reacting, and learning to repair relationships through sincere apologies. Shelly's approach is refreshingly humble, acknowledging that perfect parenting isn't the goal - compassionate awareness is. She introduces her family's "Communication Station" practice, where family members take turns speaking while others practice deep listening without judgment - a simple but transformative tool for developing conflict resolution skills. For parents of tweens and teens wondering if it's too late to change established patterns, Shelly offers heartening advice: "It's never too late. Children never stop wanting secure attachment with their parents." The pathway forward involves ownership of past mistakes, genuine apologies, and consistent change. Whether you're just beginning your parenting journey or looking to strengthen relationships with older children, this conversation provides both the inspiration and practical tools to create the connected, calm family life you've been seeking.Connect with ShellyVisit her website, or connect on Facebook or Instagram. Where Gentle Parenting has Lost the Plot (a convo with Avital Schreiber Levy)

Gentle Parenting has become a sort of parenting movement over the last decade or so. I've been here for more than a hot minute and it's interesting what I've noticed. You see, before Gentle there was Conscious Parenting and before that there was Love and Logic and and and. I think the original founders of these methods were probably drinking the same koolaid I like…we secretly want to raise our kids even better than our parents did. We want our kids to feel loved and enjoyed. We don't want them to act like selfish creepos. We want them to become besties with their siblings and to have their backs. Of course, much fancier more formal lingo is typically used in the “parenting space”. And I think that's a big part of the problem. Somewhere with all of these lofty movements, parents have become performative. Gentle Parenting has been twisted. The parents that come to work with me lately are more permissive than I've ever seen and more unpack-leader-y too. They have lost their voice, their power and their family life seems tense and frankly, miserable. I believe it's often a case of gentle parenting gone wrong. My guest this week is Avital Schreiber Levy. She's a mom, author, parenting coach, and designer who knows how to navigate the traps that well-meaning moms and dads end up falling into. Avital pulls no punches as we dig into the good, the bad, and the ugly of current Gentle Parenting trends, and why feelings are important, but they can't be the only thing guiding your child's behavior. But it's not all trash talk. She's got real, practical alternatives and strategies you can use to give your family the Pack Leadership it deserves, with confidence, and without yelling or excessive guilt. As always, thanks for listening. Send us a textIn this episode, I'm joined by Melani Ladygo to explore the RIE approach — a respectful, relationship-based way of communicating with children from infancy onward. Developed by Magda Gerber in the late 1970s, RIE (Resources for Infant Educarers) is built on the idea that even the youngest babies deserve to be treated as capable individuals, with mutual respect at the core.Melani shares how RIE gives parents a practical framework for setting boundaries without being either too harsh or too permissive. We talk about what respectful caregiving actually looks like with infants and toddlers, how to respond to challenging behaviors like hitting, biting, and tantrums, and why staying calm and connected matters so much — even when emotions run high.If you're looking for a parenting approach that blends empathy, clear boundaries, and authentic connection, this conversation will offer both inspiration and real-world tools you can start using right away.

Today, Jessica is joined by Emma, who opens up about her path of radical self-reclamation.  What happens when the identities you've clung to—like being the “fit, strong, disciplined” athlete—start creating more anxiety than alignment? Her story is raw, real, and full of moments that will make you pause and reflect on your own path. She sheds light on navigating vulnerability, the push-pull of sharing online, and the sacred power of embracing spiritual awakening and new chapters—not as something to fear, but as the space where your next evolution begins. This is your reminder that you are allowed to change.
