He’s played with me in El Famous, as well as Red Novella and I Can Hear Myself Levitate, and is also a new dad. We chat about his upbringing in Hawaii, living on the east coast, culture shock, playing a show at an unusual college, mental health, fatherhood, fun shows we’ve played together, and a shit-load more. I also give an update on what I’ve been up to since the last episode, including Camp Punk In Drublic, some shows I played with my new band Lower Nature, and my new solo acoustic bullshit. Come by SOL Mondays, every monday night at High Noon Saloon in Wicker Park! 9pm-2am, no cover, 21+, eat good food and drink good people while I play all the punk jams. This week, musician Kevin Singleton (The Cold Mourning, El Famous, Inept) joins me for a performance outside Bottom Lounge (1375 W Lake St, Chicago, IL 60607), the epic Chicago live music venue he manages. Kevin plays two awesome Cold Mourning songs ("Hopeless," "Tombstone") before we bring food into the car from the spectacular Bottom Lounge menu. If you're planning to see a show at Bottom Lounge, plan on getting there early for dinner; the food rocks. We talk about: Kevin had to become "Johnny Law" when one of the bands at Bottom Lounge brought booze outside the venue. Advice for independent bands: How to present yourself and what to do when you're looking to get booked for gigs. "What are some good things a band can do... besides 'make good music?'" Kevin's ascension in the local music scene, specifically with the band Inept ("we started up right out of high school; we didn't have a care in the world") El Famous's history, including last year's profoundly emotional album. The reason why El Famous isn't doing much right now. Why Cold Mourning makes perfect sense as an artistic outlet for Singleton right now.
I’m back, motherfuckers! Kidney stones and hangovers couldn’t kill me! Christmas time is here. Instead of an interview, I play a buttload of punk rock Christmas songs from some of my favorite bands of all time ever of all time. Plus, I chat about the last two El Famous shows, bitch about the Punk Goes series, and give you guys n gals my Christmas blessing. Hope you were able to discover something new in this episode!
