It's the most wonderful time of the year again, and that means it's time for our holiday special episode! This Christmas season, we decided to revisit a nostalgic animated favorite from childhood, the Rankin-Bass Frosty the Snowman holiday special. We discuss the origins of the song that inspired the cartoon, Jimmy Durante's excellent voiceover, Frosty's place within the Rankin-Bass holiday lineup, and our reactions to rewatching this special after many years. Hop a train to the North Pole with us, and don't forget your magic hat!
We're taking a few days off for the holidays, but we'll be back with brand new editions of TV Confidential in the new year. In the meantime, please enjoy this Blast from the Past clip from December 2010 in which Tony, Donna, and Ed remember the premiere of the Rankin-Bass animated special Frosty the Snowman (CBS, 1969).
Send us a textDo you remember Jack Frost from the 90s? We don't because neither of us watched this movie. It had a big budget, big starts, and big effects. So what stopped us from wanting to see it back then? Well, we're about to find out as we go back and watch Jack Frost starring Batman, we mean Micheal Keaton and Kelly Preston. As a bonus, we also watched Hallmark's "Good Morning Christmas" starring Alison Sweeney and... oh who cares!Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

In the quaint village of Evergreen Hollow, nestled deep within a snow-covered valley, winter was a time of joy and festivity. Each year, the townsfolk would gather to build snowmen, adorning them with scarves, coal buttons, and crooked carrot noses. But this year, their merriment awakened something sinister. Frosty, an unusually large snowman, was crafted by a group of children near the edge of the forest. They decorated him with an ancient top hat they had found buried in the snow. Unbeknownst to them, the hat carried a curse—a remnant of a forgotten sorcerer's wrath. As twilight descended, Frosty came to life, his coal eyes glowing red with malevolence. He shambled into the heart of the village, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. The cheerful jingle of bells was soon drowned out by screams.Frosty's icy rampage was unlike anything the villagers had seen. He crushed homes under his massive, snow-laden arms and froze anyone who dared to confront him with a single, bone-chilling touch. Panic spread as people fled into the woods, their footsteps muffled by the deep snow. But Frosty was relentless, his hulking form growing larger with every snowdrift he absorbed. The village elder, recalling an old tale about a cursed snowman, rallied the survivors to fight back. Together, they crafted torches and boiling cauldrons of water, their only hope against the murderous Frosty. As the villagers stood united against the towering snow monster, the winds howled, carrying Frosty's sinister laughter. The battle for Evergreen Hollow had begun, but would the villagers' courage be enough to melt his icy wrath?DUBBY DUBBY is declaring WAR on big Energy! In this very festive episode, Jim and Derek are joined by Joe to discuss the different types of Frosties we might get if we change out his hat or emotions (or both). Then, could you make and live in a real gingerbread house? And finally, what obscure media would we turn into a Hallmark ornament? Also, do we even know any media that's particularly obscure? Les, Kurt, and Jason are officially in their tax season as it's now officially holiday movie time! But first, find out if Blac Chyna and Derrick Milano are signing a prenup and what someone named Suckafreeze thinks about it! Then it's time to talk about Netflix's latest salvo in the holiday movie viewership wars, Hot Frosty. Starring Hallmark royalty Lacey Chabert and Dustin Milligan (Ted from Schitt's Creek), this movie may be Lacy's Monster's Ball because of her character's mess of a housee (though they guys MAY be thinking of Charlize Theron's “Monster” instead for this analogy). With a supporting cast that includes Lauren Holly, Craig Robinson, and Joe Lo Truglio, and Crishell Stause, this movie is like Splash… but with medical records in Comic Sans. "That hat brought Frosty to life. It must be magic!" We're getting into the cooler months, which means snow should be coming soon. This means its time to talk Frosty the Snowman, a Rankin/Bass special that was nostalgic to Robert. It may be more geared to kids, but theres a lot of charm from the special. Learn how songwriter Jack Rollins got his start in his forties in which he wrote a variety of songs including those for Lawrence Welk and Babe Ruth before he got into the holiday buisness. Also learn how Gene Autry repeated with Frosty the year after he sung Rudolph and how Jimmy Durante's style would suite him to put out his own cover of Frosty. This week your favorite couple snowflakes discuss what it takes to be a real snowMAN! Not like Leon from Elf. Not like Sam from Rudolph. Not like Michael Keaton's Jack Frost from the 1998 smash hit film Jack Frost. No, this week I Have A Good Feeling About This hosts Craig and Tyler are talking "Frosty the Snowman," the 1969 animated feature by everyone's favorite TV Christmas special creators Rankin/Bass! They don't even leave out any of the gruesome details either, so trigger warning: this episode dives into some icy topics like what snowmen become when they melt (hint...it's water). IHAGFAT also makes you sit through the entirety of the ridiculously long soundbits from the film where the film's foley work gets out of control (no those parts aren't edited to make them comically longer, they literally are just that long and goofy). Final trigger warning: there is a Karen in this film. But like, she's a kid so...she's not like one of those Karen's. Listen today, lest you melt tomorrow!

In this latest episode of The Retroist Podcast, we're journeying into the whimsical and wintry world of Frosty the Snowman. I start off with a personal tale – my own yet futile, attempts at constructing gargantuan snowmen. A predictable kid story, it sets the stage for our deep dive into Frosty's universe. We then explore the origins of the iconic song "Frosty the Snowman." I discuss how this catchy tune was released and how it laid the foundation for the animated stories that followed. Next, we take a moment to appreciate the UPA cartoon adaptation of Frosty. While it may not be as well-known as others, this piece of animation is a gem that contributed significantly to the Frosty lore. The highlight of the episode is, without a doubt, the Rankin/Bass TV special. Here, I delve into the behind-the-scenes magic that brought this beloved holiday classic to life. From the creative animation to the talented individuals who lent their voices to these memorable characters. But the story doesn't end there. We also explore the various sequels and follow-ups that have helped keep Frosty's spirit alive for generations. Each of these works adds another layer to the enchanting snowman's legacy. This episode was fun to do and is packed with nostalgia, interesting facts, and a deep appreciation for one of the most beloved holiday characters. So, grab a warm drink, find a cozy spot, and join me as we bring some winter cheer to life with the story of Frosty the Snowman.

In this episode, I offer some of my piano arrangements for your use in any gathering where you might want some background music. A bit about my style of arrangements: I very much like dissonant sounds. Dissonance refers to a lack of harmony. Dissonant music sometimes makes people feel a bit uneasy. Because of this feeling, dissonant music is often used to create tension in films. In the last 10 years or so, I have used dissonance in many of my arrangements because of the unique sound. Not everyone will be a fan of this music, but it is what I am currently working on and I thought I would share it.This album contains:The Christmas Song - pianoDo You Hear What I Hear - pianoAll Alone Am I - pianoI'll Be Home For Christmas - pianoTheme from Knots Landing TV Show - piano, strings and percussionSilent Night - pianoEmpty Chairs At Empty Tables (from Les Miserables) - pianoTheme from Seattle TV Show - piano and stringsFrosty The Snowman - pianoI hope you enjoy the album.
