Decorative lighting used at Christmastime
Grateful Friday.Murphy & Jodi's weekend getaway - why Jodi thinks it will be good based on what they're not doing. How much longer is it okay to leave Christmas lights up??
Hey, Everyone! We’re technically on vacation, but there was a day in these past few weeks that we still needed to get together and talk anyway. This episode was supposed to just be a short Briefing Room, and it ended up being 2 Hours, because it’s us! So, we just decided to make this our next Podcast in Death episode, and call it our Not So Brief Briefing Room. In this episode, we pretty much cover anything and everything. We talk about our “In Death Holiday Playlist,” our holiday, COVID, Christmas Cookies, Christmas Lights, Christmas Movies, An article about the Bee Gees that made AJ angry, Nora’s Chronicles of The One Series, Bridgerton, Shonda Rhimes, etc. Then, AJ’s dog, Lilly, starts to get bored with our discussion and we had to stop. After edits, not quite two hours, but hope you all like it. If you don’t like the random off topic conversations, feel free to skip. You won’t hurt our feelings. Have a Happy New Year, and we will see you again in 2022!

Hard times can bring out the very best in people, as a Baltimore neighbourhood found out last Christmas. Matt Riggs and Kim Morton explain how an act of kindness using Christmas lights started a holiday tradition for their community. We also travel to Port de Grave, Nfld., where Joyce Morgan, co-chair of the Port de Grave Annual Boat Lighting, explains why boats decked out in Christmas lights have lit up the harbour for more than two decades.
It's the mooooost somethingest time of the year! I can't stress this enough... Andy actually likes stuff... just not Christmas stuff... mostly. Today we're talking X-mas and the various things about it that Andy hates. Is it worth it? Does it do more harm than good? Do we really need to worry about elf culture? Like seriously, do we? The first string of lights to be festooned upon a tree dazzled visitors to the New York home of Edward Johnson, Vice President of the Edison Electric Light Company, on 22nd December, 1882.Lit patriotic red, white and blue, the tree also revolved; wowing a reporter from The Detroit Post and Tribune. “At the rear of the beautiful parlors, was a large Christmas tree presenting a most picturesque and uncanny aspect,” he wrote. “It was brilliantly lighted with… eighty lights in all encased in these dainty glass eggs… One can hardly imagine anything prettier.”In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal what electric lights have in common with potatoes; ask why Americans were frightened of wired bulbs, yet quite content to set candles on fire and attach them to flammable resin in their own homes; and untangle how a failed patent application was responsible for the trend finally catching on…Further Reading:‘Untangling the History of Christmas Lights' (Smithsonian Magazine, 2016): https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/untangling-history-christmas-lights-180961140/‘Who Invented Christmas Lights?' The symbols of Christmas have become the traditions of Christmas -- traditions like an evening drive to see grand light displays. When you hear a song like "Christmas Lights" by Love & the Outcome, allow it to point your heart toward Jesus, the Light of the World. You can't consider the Christmas story without remembering the true Light that invaded the darkness when He put on flesh and dwelled among us. Clay Newcomb and the Bear Grease crew begin their discussion with how early Christmas decorations impact communities, and how Halloween decor doesn't make sense -- at all. Later, they have some more meaningful dialogue about how our hunting rights are being chipped away at by anti-hunting sentiment. Clay describes the idea of "guarding the gate" and how predator hunting is usually the door for anti-hunting legislation to enter into the hunting space. The crew spends the last half of the podcast discussing George McJunkin's life and impact. Happy Thanksgiving!
