We're joined by Author and Photographer, Paul Koudounaris, who has previously been on the show talking about Pet Cemeteries in his book Faithful unto Death. Today we're chatting about railroad dogs and his latest book called Go West Young Dog. As a really fascinating read, the book uncovers a somewhat hidden pocket of canine history about some brave, vagabond dogs that became famous by traveling - alone- on the world's first rail networks. Paul concentrates on the American dogs, not that there weren't ‘railroad' dogs in other continents. Many of these dogs gained ‘celebrity' status - their stories are funny, heartwarming, triumphant, and tragic, or all at the same time. As Paul says: 'I believe that within those stories, these dogs have some lessons to teach us.'

Hi there! Taking inspiration from a playlist by music guru and MP3 blog pioneer Matthew Perpetua, Joe and Kari are exploring songs with the "crazed energy or manic intensity" of a good ol 80s coke psychosis. Lindsey Buckingham was definitely (ALLEGEDLY) on something when he decided to record "I Want You". Go West also certainly (ALLEGEDLY) had a line for "party favors" in the "Call Me" video budget. And Bobby Brown... him, Slimer and Vigo were for sure (ALLEGEDLY) doing some skiing on the set of Ghostbusters II. Joe and Kari break down all the tea around these wild tracks and more! Also, let's talk about one of the cheesiest, and worst, soundtrack songs of the 80s. No disassemble. Bye there!Send a text

The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.
The phrase "go west!" was not coined by the Village People or the Pet Shop Boys, but by Horace Greeley, a famous newspaper editor a long time ago. And seen from Europe, all of the United States is West. So that's what Luca Puster tells his young European clients who just finish High School and are considering college: Go west young man, and grow up playing football. Or soccer. How do they find American colleges? What makes them come here, what is attractive about this step in their football and study careers? How do they find the game here, the current crisis around immigration and politics, what do they take back? Luca is the co-founder of Students Go West, an agency that helps bring European footballers into American collegiate soccer programs. He also played for the GAK in Graz, Austria, and for Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida.HELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODE: Students Go West, websitePercentages of international players in the top NCAA teams, 2023NEW: send me a text message! Question. Who messed up last week thinking that the Cleveland Rams were the only professional franchise to move after winning a championship? This guy! Yes the Cleveland Rams were first, but the Dallas Texans also did it in 1962 before they became the Kansas City Chiefs the next year. One thing about the Rams though, there was a lot of innovation about this team, and they made it OK for the NFL to move out west.
Question. Who is the only professional sports franchise to leave a city after winning a championship? Give up? The Cleveland Rams. Yes, the CLEVELAND. Rams.
Structured in two almost novella-like sections, “Hard Margins” follows Wyoming's Towuk tribe. The story begins in the spring of 1958 and is told by Danny Hubbard, a Korean war veteran, who has taken this remote BIA position for a chance to remake his life...Out of a mixture of duty and boredom, Hubbard begins to read the reports written by his BIA predecessors, dating back to the 1870s, looking for answers. It's here he discovers the record left by Agent Dorrance, who almost religiously believed in his mandate, to work “for the welfare and improvement of the Indians.”Dorrance is an amazing creation, a man who can be admired and reviled on the same page. A Civil War veteran turned correspondent for Horace Greeley's New York Tribune, he quickly becomes a devotee of Greeley's idea of an agrarian utopia in the West, made famous with the phrase, “Go West, young man.”We often think that ideas such as Manifest Destiny and the needs of a growing population made western expansion a fait accompli, but Delaney's novel reminds readers about the mood of the country after the Civil War.The long, bloody conflict gave rise to a generation who wanted to believe their sacrifice meant something, which led many to utopian philosophies about how the spiritual connection of men to the land could undo the corruption of governments and cities. For many, the supposedly unpopulated West could be a chance to reinvent America, and leave behind the worst aspects of human nature.Edward J. Delaney is an award-winning author, journalist, and filmmaker. His books include the novels Follow the Sun, Broken Irish, and Warp & Weft, and the short story collection The Drowning and Other Stories. His short fiction has also been published in The Atlantic and Best American Short Stories, and featured on PRI's Selected Shorts program. Among other honors, he has received the PEN/New England Award, O. Henry Prize, and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. He is also the co-author of Born to Play, by Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia. As a journalist, Delaney has written for publications including the Denver Post and Chicago Tribune, received the National Education Reporting Award, and has served as an editor at the Neiman Journalism Lab at Harvard University. As a filmmaker, he has directed and produced documentary films including The Times Were Never So Bad: The Life of Andre Dubus and Library of the Early Mind.Born and raised in Massachusetts, Delaney has also spent time in Georgia, Florida, and Colorado, and now lives in Rhode Island, where he teaches at Roger Williams University and edits the literary journal Mount Hope.#authorpodcast #podcast #edwardjdelaney #speakingofwriterspodcast

This episode uncovers the incredible, unlikely story of how the Pet Shop Boys' synth-pop hit, "Go West," was adopted by the passionate Napoli tifosi to become the soundtrack to the club's spectacular phoenix-from-the-ashes revival. We explore why the song's themes of unity and hope resonate so profoundly with the resilient spirit of Naples, making "going west" a metaphor for the team's ascent to European football's pinnacle. We dive into the electrifying pre-match ritual at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, where the iconic melody transforms 50,000 fans into the team's thunderous twelfth man, solidifying the song's legacy as one of football's most organic and powerful anthems. Two years after the Dodgers and the Giants moved to California to establish Major League Baseball on the West Coast, the Dodgers found themselves in the World Series. Following three games in the Los Angeles Colosseum, the Series returns to Cominsky Park with the Dodgers ahead 3-2. Larry Sherry had already won a game, saved two others, and is now on the mound in Game Six. The White Sox Early Wynn also returns as a starter, but on short rest of only two days, the White Sox are taking a gamble – a curious turn of phrase, as this is the first World Series for the White Sox since the Black Sox Scandal of 1917. Mel Allen and By Saam will talk you through the plays in a must-win game for the White Sox. You'll hear Brett explain how he moved from baseball to music, the mentorship that pulled him into film scoring, and why he built a hands-on music academy that now serves about 100 students. Brett walks through their teaching approach (bands, songwriting, recording, and mixing fundamentals), how community and accountability shape progress, and how they stage live events for students at local venues. He also breaks down a commissioned score he wrote for the silent film Go West, 81 minutes of continuous music, and how he's introducing local orchestra students to studio recording.Guest links:Brett Ensley Studios: https://www.brettensleystudios.com/Instagram: @brettensleystudiosVideo By: More Than Media - https://www.morethan.media/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/morethan.media/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@morethan.mediaYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@morethanmedia_The S.O.U.N.D. Miss Heard celebrates Season 6, Episode 311 with Go West's “King of Wishful Thinking”— the impossibly catchy breakup anthem that helped turn Pretty Woman into a pop culture juggernaut. We'll unpack the song's origin, the rise of Go West, and the surprising story behind how this synth-pop gem became the ultimate feel-good farewell. You'll hear the backstory of the movie that wasn't meant to be a rom-com, the music video that defied logic, and the legacy of a song that still refuses to let go. Pop in those earbuds — this is pure ‘90s nostalgia with a beat you can't forget.
