In the eighth and final 15 minutes of our screenplay treatment, Napoleon really is trying to get this one last job done by completing the Brumaire coup. But his bid for his ultimate goal requires an unexpected sacrifice and is dependent on an essential contribution from his now thoroughly beloved Josephine. With a new framing device underlining the crucial role of Paul Barras in this story as the antagonist, we're sprinting for a finish line - and a certain comfy chair for our leading man.Yes, it's episode nine of our screenwriting escapade, in which we complete our mission of crafting a top-notch screenplay treatment about the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. Alex Stevenson is joined by James Topham (who knows a thing or two about screenwriting) and Ben Deery (who knows a thing or two about acting) to put the movie world to rights. Having analysed the pitfalls and frustrations of Ridley Scott's Napoleon 2023 in the first season the Napoleon Movie Quarter-Hourly, this time round the team have tried their uppermost to come up with the magic themselves. As our resident artificial aide-de-camp NAIpoleon Bot-aparte puts it:[02:27] The Recap of the "Rotten Pear": James catches us up on Act Three so far, featuring Napoleon's desertion from Egypt, a "titanic" row with Josephine, and a dinner with Barras that changes everything.[12:12] History is a Farce: Alex reads from Zamoyski's biography, revealing the hilarious historical reality of the coup: a bucking horse, a stress-induced facial rash, and a very "undone" Napoleon.[17:03] Dramatic Masterstroke or "Sh*tshow"?: The team debates whether Napoleon's historical bungling of the coup is a screenwriting disaster or an ironic opportunity for a "stunning performance."[19:13] The Ultimate Sacrifice: Alex pitches a thematic climax where Napoleon trades his "Great Man" dignity and romantic ideals for the grubbiness of actual power.[21:45] The Novella as a Blunt Instrument: Ben suggests a high-action alternative involving Napoleon beating a man unconscious with his own rolled-up novella manuscript.[28:35] The Framing Device Rabbit Hole: A deep dive into the art of the framing device, featuring references to The Princess Bride, Amadeus, and the "triangle" used in the World Snooker Championship.[33:10] Perspectives on a Dinner: The hosts pitch a circular narrative structure that uses a dinner with Barras to show how the "urbane puppet master" became the man who "owes Napoleon everything."[43:03] Marinara in the Sticks: Exploring the "fitting end" for Barras—sidelined to a provincial town like Ray Liotta at the end of Goodfellas with nothing but bad pasta sauce for company.[45:28] The Bonaparte Whisperer: Josephine finally gets an active role in the heist, proving she is a master survivor who knows exactly how to handle smitten Directory presidents and resignation letters.[52:36] The Dictator's Comfy Chair: The team lands on a final image involving a circular seating arrangement, an enigmatic grin, and the most crucial question of the production: "Who is going to play the pug?"Help us produce more episodes by supporting the Napoleonic Quarterly on Patreon: patreon.com/napoleonicquarterly

EPISODE 710 - Corey Croft - Wrestling With Your Writing, A Novella - France V. BrazilIn this episode, author Corey Croft joins the show from Vancouver to explore the realities of writing, the creative life and the difficult choices facing modern authors. Corey speaks candidly about the tension between traditional and independent publishing, explaining that neither path is easy. One demands the perseverance to face repeated rejection while the other requires the stamina to handle every piece of the work alone. For Corey, the deciding factor always comes back to feedback. Writers need readers, and honest critique can illuminate which publishing route makes sense and what a story truly needs.Corey describes his creative evolution from a younger, more dramatic writer to one now grounded in clarity, craft and emotional honesty. He explains how his latest novella France v Brazil ninety eight reflects this transition. The book is a compact, introspective character study about a man unraveling emotionally and spiritually after years of isolation. It blends existential themes with dark humour in a way that nods to Camus and Sartre, posing questions about control, freedom and the limits of understanding oneself. Corey emphasizes that while the subject matter is heavy, the story is not meant to glamorize mental illness. Instead, it seeks to express genuine human struggle in a way that lets readers see themselves in the character's vulnerabilities. The conversation turns toward artistry and presentation, including Corey's unconventional book covers and his longstanding creative collaboration with his brother. He explains that he values originality over trends, both in visuals and in writing, and that experimentation is essential for growth. Corey also speaks openly about how his characters often begin as reflections of his own emotions. Revisiting old drafts feels like revisiting earlier versions of himself, allowing him to refine characters from anger into something more complex and relatable.Though the novella is small in scope, Corey intends its impact to be personal and profound. He hopes readers approach his work without preconceived notions and feel something authentic, whether admiration or discomfort. For him, art exists to make people think, feel and question, not to provide easy answers.Corey shares his website and social links where readers can explore his stories, poetry and upcoming soft launch. He notes that while self-promotion remains a challenge, creating art for its own sake continues to drive him.Key Takeaway:Corey Croft's work reminds us that writing is both introspection and connection. The most powerful stories emerge when we let go of perfection, invite feedback and embrace the honest, messy work of understanding ourselves through the characters we create.https://coreycroftauthor.com/Send us Fan MailSupport the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

This episode opens with an improvised serialized scene called “The Rusted Lantern” — a short noir novella-style reading performed live — then unfolds into a wide-ranging, candid conversation about auditions, writing, producing indie films, creative burnout, social-media monetization, sobriety, pacing your career, and practical tips for makers trying to get work done with limited time and money. The trio (Jen Bartels, Caitlin Brodnick, Isaac Abrams) balance a playful creative exercise with honest, useful career talk for actors, writers, creators and anyone making art in the modern media ecosystem.Episode highlights and expanded description- Live novella performance: Isaac prompts an AI-style 90-second soap-opera novella; the group performs multiple takes of a moody scene set in a corner table at “The Rustic Lantern.” - Performance craft & acting advice: After the reading the hosts debrief on cold reads, self-tape auditions, the tension between following explicit direction vs. owning the moment, and strategies for staying present in auditions. - Writing & making your own work: The hosts discuss how to move from performer to creator — startup routines for writing a script or short, how to attack a seemingly overwhelming feature project (write the small scene you can't stop thinking about), using collaboration and iterative drafts, and practical tools (writer-duet workflows, co-writing in a room, and the value of deadlines).- Indie filmmaking realities: Low-budget production advice — how to make content when money is scarce- Encouraging closing: the hosts emphasize longevity in creative careers — the importance of craft, tenacity, and staying connected to why you started. When the workers arrive, Laney's jaw drops as she had expected one man, but it's a crew! Not just any crew, this is a band of five sexy strong male college students who build, repair, and paint fences. As John dictates the rules for the day, and for the spicy event that will be the hot delicious finale, all the men and Laney are ready to tear into the day with lusty excited hopes. They are all ecstatic about all the potential dreamy flirty pitstops along the way as they do their duty to get the fence job done, but with much more salacious edging than any of them had expected. Being the female in the group, Laney is looking forward to so many high riding peaks, her highest count ever will surely be achieved with a full beefy crew like this. John's certainly not left out of the fun though! He has outdone himself this time in delivering a scheme for one of Laney's topmost unmet fantasies, and his beaming smile tells all. He's not only overindulgent with his wife, but he's going to reap all the steamy benefits once the guys head home, and for years and years to come thereafter. He's no dummy!
