Emilio Guarino is a bassist, music producer, and author of Make It: A Guide For Recent Music Graduates. His music ranges from orchestral to jazz and electronic. In his book, Make It, Emilio picks up where music school left off and offers practical tactics and insights one can use to begin a career as a musician. It was really nice talking to Emilio about his experiences in the academic music world and how he has managed to bridge that world with the day to day life of a working musician. In this conversation, we talked about what it means to "make it," and the practices and philosophies one must embrace to find success in music. This is Emilio Guarino. He plays bass. But that’s not all he does. He makes music with computers. He also teaches and performs in many musical styles. He’s even written a book to help musicians figure out how to find a foothold. On his blog and Youtube channel, Emilio asks questions like: Are you the type of person you’d hire for a gig? Are auditions a problem-solving activity or a chance to beat up on yourself? When does the real world actually start? We dig into these topics and much more in this interview! After an unplanned one week hiatus, I am back with my friend Emilio Guarino, successful freelance bassist and author of the new book, "Make It: A Guide for Recent Music Graduates." We compare notes on freelance experiences, Emilio relates what made him want to write such a book, and we talk about the current musical climate from the perspective of the hustlers trying to survive.
