The Trump administration's new trade policy toward China has revealed just how deeply enmeshed major American corporations are with our chief geopolitical rival. Apple's story is perhaps the most dramatic.Patrick McGee, author of Apple in China and San Francisco correspondent for the Financial Times, joins Oren to discuss how Apple, like so many other nominally American companies, is constrained by the rules, regulations, and industrial preferences of the Chinese Communist Party. They break down how China dominates its peer competitors, the way multinational corporations sleepwalked into the present crisis, and the possibility of America breaking China's industrial chokehold.Further reading:Apple in China: The Capture of the World's Greatest Company by Patrick McGeeTrade with Communists Should Be Uncertain by Oren CassDisfavored Nation by Mark DiPlacido, Chris Griswold, and Trevor Jones

China Tariffs Dramatic Impact, McDonald's Takes Another Run at a Veggie Burger & WeCook's Fresh Meal Revolution with Michel Gagné, CEO

The Food Professor

In this episode of The Food Professor Podcast, hosts Michael LeBlanc and Sylvain Charlebois take on some of the hottest topics, shaking up the Canadian food industry. There's plenty to discuss, from McDonald's latest attempt to crack the plant-based market with a new veggie burger to the disruptive impact of China's tariffs on Canadian seafood and agricultural products.Kicking off the episode, Michael and Sylvain dissect McDonald's surprising re-entry into the plant-based space after previous failures. They debate whether the new veggie burger will finally resonate with consumers or if it's another attempt destined to fizzle out. As one of Canada's biggest beef buyers, McDonald's faces a delicate balance between satisfying traditional customers and appealing to the growing demand for plant-based alternatives.Next, they turn their attention to China's tariffs on Canadian seafood and other agricultural exports, which pressure producers and create economic uncertainty. The hosts discuss how Canada's food export strategy is being tested and why policymakers seem more focused on protecting the automotive sector than agriculture despite the latter's massive economic footprint.Amid these challenges, the episode spotlights new leadership in agriculture. Canada has a new federal Minister of Agriculture, Kody Blois from Nova Scotia, and Ontario has appointed Trevor Jones as its new Minister of Agriculture. Sylvain shares insights on how Blois's background as chair of the Agriculture Committee could bring a pragmatic approach to the role. At the same time, Jones's rural roots could positively shape Ontario's agricultural landscape. The hosts debate what priorities these ministers should address first, especially given the ongoing trade disputes and the economic pressure on Canadian farmers. In the second half of the episode, the hosts welcome Michel Gagné, CEO of WeCook, to the show. Michel shares his journey from managing primary Cargill and Maple Leaf food operations to leading one of Canada's top fresh meal delivery services. He discusses how WeCook differentiates itself by offering fully prepared, high-quality meals rather than meal kits, making busy weeknight dinners simple and convenient.WeCook's strategy includes local sourcing and a commitment to freshness, with meals made daily and delivered to customers within just a few days. Michel also discusses challenges like price volatility in ingredients—especially chicken—and how the company has become profitable while maintaining its quality standards. He highlights the importance of brand partnerships, like working with chef Gabrielle Drapeau and ambassador P.K. Subban, to build credibility and expand into new markets. The episode concludes with Michael and Sylvain reflecting on how the food industry can innovate in the face of global trade issues, shifting consumer preferences, and evolving political landscapes. Whether you're interested in food policy, fresh meal innovation, or how Canadian companies adapt to the times, this episode delivers fresh insights with every bite.https://www.spraguefoods.com/  The Food Professor #podcast is presented by Caddle. The “yips” is a word that strikes fear into many golfers, cricketers, darts players and many other performers.   With the yips, comes huge emotional and physiological responses.  Lack of enjoyment, and often thoughts about and decisions to quit your chosen sport or pastime.  It doesn't have to be that way however as Trevor Jones a PGA Professional Golf Coach and Mental Performance Coach and I discuss in this episode.  We go on to talk about leaning into your fears, embracing discomfort,  Acceptance Commitment Therapy or Training (ACT) and mindfulness to help golfers and performers.    Key Learning Points: The yips is a significant problem which can escape into other areas of your sport and life. The 1993 action-adventure film "Cliffhanger," directed by Renny Harlin and starring Sylvester Stallone, John Lithgow, Michael Rooker, and Janine Turner, is an adrenaline-pumping ride that combines breathtaking scenery with heart-stopping action sequences. Set against the rugged backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, "Cliffhanger" not only showcases Stallone's physical prowess but also delves into themes of redemption, survival, and the human spirit's resilience against nature's formidable challenges. The plot of "Cliffhanger" is straightforward yet compelling. Stallone plays Gabe Walker, a mountain rescue climber who is haunted by a failed rescue mission that resulted in the death of a friend's girlfriend. The event drives a wedge between him and his fellow climber Hal Tucker (played by Michael Rooker), and Gabe leaves the mountain rescue team, vowing never to return. However, fate has other plans, and he is drawn back to the mountains when a group of criminals, led by the ruthless Eric Qualen (John Lithgow), lose their loot across the peaks during a heist gone wrong. Gabe becomes embroiled in a deadly game of cat and mouse as he tries to thwart their plan and survive the treacherous mountain terrain. What sets "Cliffhanger" apart from other action films of its time is its masterful use of the natural environment as both a breathtaking backdrop and a formidable antagonist. The cinematography, by Alex Thomson, captures the majestic beauty and inherent danger of the Rocky Mountains, providing a stunning canvas for the film's high-octane action sequences. These sequences, including death-defying stunts and edge-of-your-seat climbs, are executed with precision and realism, making "Cliffhanger" a standout film in the action genre.Stallone delivers a nuanced performance as Gabe Walker, blending physicality with vulnerability. His portrayal of a man battling his own demons while fighting to survive and save others adds depth to the film's narrative. John Lithgow's performance as the villainous Eric Qualen is equally compelling. Lithgow brings a cold, calculating intelligence to his role, making him a formidable adversary for Stallone's character. The supporting cast, including Janine Turner as Jessie Deighan, Gabe's former girlfriend, and Michael Rooker as Hal Tucker, contribute significantly to the film's emotional weight. Their performances add layers to the story, highlighting themes of forgiveness, loyalty, and the bonds formed through shared adversity."Cliffhanger" also benefits from a well-crafted script that balances action with character development. The dialogue is sharp, and the pacing is tight, ensuring that the film maintains its momentum while allowing for moments of character introspection. The score, composed by Trevor Jones, complements the film's epic scope, enhancing both the suspenseful and emotional moments. However, no film is without its flaws. Episode #109 Trevor Jones, Minnow Arts Watch on Spotify | YouTube | Vimeo | Listen on Apple Podcast Trevor Jones is a family man, building designer, and co-owner of Minnow Arts Gallery in Santa Cruz, California. Trevor was born and raised in Cupertino before studying economics and international studies during his undergrad and earning a master's in architecture from the University of Oregon. Trevor describes the 15 years he lived in Portland, Oregon, as the “cauldron of his life as a creative person.” Inspired by Portland's DIY art, design, music, and skateboarding scene, he imbued collaborative and process-oriented principles into SpaceCamp Studio, his design-build practice where he works as principal designer and general contractor.  Trevor moved to Santa Cruz in the early 2010s to continue his work at SpaceCamp, raise his family, and, as a surfer, live a coastal lifestyle. He met Minnow Arts Co-Owner Christie Jarvis through a mutual friend and artist, Jeremy Borgeson. Christie, a landscape architect, ceramicist, and filmmaker, was looking for office space, and Trevor had an office in the barrel aging warehouse of Humble Sea Brewing. It didn't work out for them there, but it led Trevor and Christie to look for an office together. They eventually found and leased the space that became the Minnow Arts Gallery. Trevor and Christie began hosting exhibitions that featured work from friends and artists they were connected with. Since then, Minnow Arts has been working to create an inclusive and supportive gallery focused on supporting the local art scene in Santa Cruz and giving opportunities to local and regional artists. Rather than having a strict mission statement, Minnow Arts stays true to its DIY roots and takes a more flexible approach to exploring what the space can be through different shows and events. They also aim to make exhibiting art more approachable and demystified for artists. Trevor sees his role as a “companion” to artists. In our conversation, Trevor shares his approach to building design, reflections on the journey that led him to co-owning a gallery, and advice for anyone hoping to ‘do it themselves.' Join Christie and Trevor at Minnow Arts Gallery on Friday, January 5th, for First Friday Santa Cruz as they open a retrospective exhibition featuring artwork from Good Knife Studio Creative Director Juan Llorens, a Buenos Aires-based artist who designs and illustrates work for Humble Sea Brewing's cans, bottles, and marketing materials. Frank Scott Krueger from Humble Sea Brewing is collaborating with Juan to curate the show. https://www.minnowarts.com/ IG: https://www.instagram.com/minnow.arts/ Check out First Friday Santa Cruz for their entire lineup of participating galleries. https://firstfridaysantacruz.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/content-magazine/support

It is great to welcome onto the show mental skills and golf coach Trevor Jones to explore a different way of dealing with the thoughts and sensations that can hold such sway over us.  He has a fascinating story to tell as both a player and a coach at a very high level. We discussed how many of the existing models of trying to ‘control' thoughts and just use visualisation techniques proved so ineffective.  How many time have you hit bad shots when you feel GOOD and conversely we have all hit good shots when we are feeling BAD  The psychological flexibility model  Acceptance and Commitment Training Instead of trying to control thoughts and feelings understand how YOU are NOT your thoughts Why it is a myth to think you have to ‘feel good' to play good The way our brain just ‘pumps' out thought  Why we should give our brain a name!!  How you can ‘diffuse' from your thinking  The way out of the matrix  The importance of VALUES based behaviour  How we can move towards what we REALLY value  OPEN  AWARE  ENGAGED   ‘Trevor won the Welsh National Championship in 2008, and played full time professional golf for the next 3 years, yet he struggled when applying traditional sport psychology to himself. After discovering ACT (Acceptance and commitment training) in 2012, Trevor immersed himself in the theory and practice, his research being guided by some of the best in the field. A decade later, Trevor now works for the US based Aware Performance Group, helping college golfers improve their Psychological Flexibility. Trevor also mentors two Sport Psychologists, works privately with up and coming junior golfers, and runs a golf coaching business as a PGA professional. His book ‘Get out of your mind and into your game – how to build Psychological Flexibility on the fairways and beyond' is due for release later this year.'     Social media for Trevor is @mind_your_golf    To book your place at Archerfield for the ‘Lost Art School' go to www.themindfactor.com

It sure seems like a lot of folks are on vacation. Like, not just from crypto and NFT lands, but in real life. Historically, in the period from May to the end of August, sales tend to slow down when it comes to the art-side of things. Couple that with an overall sluggish market and it makes sense that a lot of folks are starting longer vacations earlier. There is no need to be on 24/7 every single day. But that doesn't mean there's nothing going on. On the contrary, from mega corporations like Nike and Starbucks or Red Bull launching NFT-powered projects to artists like Trevor Jones & The Evening Standard on-boarding new blood or crypto games like Axie Infinity getting their game listed on the Apple app store, there is probably more meaningful work happening now than at any period during the bull in terms of things that are growing the pie for everyone. There are also hugely notable events that are aimed at existing participants, like Alpha Centauri Kids' epic 48 individual 1/1 auctions that grossed over a million dollars last week, amongst other events. So, before, during or after your holiday from NFT land, make sure you take note of all the work that's being put out. Matthew & Rizzle do a little shitting on parades and stirring of pots on this week's episode of MARS. A non-trivial number of projects continue to innovate and push the envelope on what's possible in NFT Land amidst the current storm of $hitcoins and $memecoins, like Async.Art and their latest innovation: dynamic blueprints. That's great. That is exciting. For folks who've been in the space, we need this continued innovation. But most innovation is on-chain, and in times like these when gas prices are soaring, doing anything on-chain is prohibitively expensive for anyone new or looking to enter the space. That's not great. That sucks, straight up. Cue The Oath, a collaboration between Trevor Jones x Apollo Entertainment x Evening Standard that went live last week on Nifty Gateway that was claimed, for free, by 20,200 collectors and saw 12k+ new NG account sign ups, including many, many first time NFT collectors, some of whom have already engaged in collecting paid NFT releases. The space needs more friction-less on-boarding ports for new participants to enter. On top of on-boarding, it's also essential to keep crypto writ large a place that's as welcoming and hospitable to the subversive, fringe and weird elements of society as it is to the mega-consumer corporate players. The latter are important for mass-adoption, but the former are essential to keep this place a desirable destination for subsequent generations that create that new-new that excites culture. When I say the word ‘mining,' where does your mind go? Do you think of heavy machinery digging into the ground? Or think of specific mining like coal mining? Or maybe you think of crypto mining which an entirely different ballgame. One aspect of mining that most people are unaware of is the ESG data collection on mine sites. Mining companies have to comply with specific ESG standards, so entire teams are designated for the tracking, gathering, and reporting of ESG data. The current method of tracking and gathering this data is inefficient and non-scalable. The method involves an individual writing the findings in a field notebook, translating that data into a spreadsheet, and creating a report for senior management. Multiple steps and people involved when there should be only one person and system. Our guest on The Green Hour today solved this very problem by creating a Software-as-a-Service platform for ESG data collection in the mining industry. Trevor Jones is the CEO and founder of Lynx Global Intelligence, a company bridging the gap between ESG, technology, and mining. With Lynx's platform, people on the mine sites can ditch the field notebooks and spreadsheets, replacing them with an intuitive software solution. Lynx's platform provides real-time capabilities, allows forward planning and responsiveness, and brings cost and time savings. Now, instead of using multiple platforms to achieve ESG data collection and reporting, you only need one. Check out Lynx's website - https://www.lynxglobalintelligence.com/

Yesterday's US jobs figure came in just about as expected, with a slight miss of about 2,000 jobs. Despite this, there was little market reaction, and BTC is currently trading just shy of $28,000, while ETH hovers around $1,860. With both the US and Europe on a long weekend, there is an expected quiet time in the markets.Meanwhile, in the world of NFTs, there is some speculation that someone traced an IP to Montreal in regards to Nakamigos causing a pump. The identity of the person is still unknown, but it is interesting to see how community speculation can shape market trends. On a more positive note, we were joined by Trevor Jones and the Makers Place team to talk about the Castle party, which is being held in memory of the late Alotta Money. This event is not only an exhibition, but also a charity event to raise awareness for new artists and the legacy of the legendary crypto artist, Alotta Money.During the discussion, Basileus talked about the base layer of fun behind Alotta Money's art and life in general. They even touched upon his final days, emphasizing the importance of living life to the fullest and leaving a positive impact on the world. As for the traditional markets, there was a weaker tone today, with gold dipping off from highs. Oilil is currently above $80 per barrel, which is notable. The banking system is still in hot water, and bank stocks have continued to suffer as a result.GM Hosted on Acast. Trevor not only survived two traumatic brain injuries, he also became a medical doctor. At age 13, apart from the TBI and its impact on memory and eyesight, Trevor suffered a broken pelvis, numerous broken vertebrae, and his legs were paralyzed. He had to learn to walk, talk and read again. His prognosis was that he might be able to work greeting people at Walmart. He blew that prognosis to smithereens, but then at 28, didn't fare much better physically from the second accident, AND he lost his career in medicine because of it. Is it easier to face this trauma knowing nothing about what lies ahead? Or the second time, once you know what you're up against? Find out whether stereotypes about recovering from TBIs are true. Learn key factors that helped Trevor master anger, despair, hopelessness and uncertainty, as well as achieve phenomenal physical recoveries. Please share this with someone who needs this. Bio Trevor Jones is a non-practicing medical doctor, an IT specialist, coach, speaker and 2x traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivor. He's a change agent who spreads hope and dispels myths about TBIs. As a rehab. coach, he helps people recover faster and more fully from physical injuries. As a speaker, he educates people about TBIs, injury recovery and invisible disability awareness. Trevor has uncommon breadth and depth of knowledge, insights and tools that boost his ability to understand and support people in rehabilitation. He knows firsthand that it's not doctors or therapists that get you well but you, putting in the work, and your mindset. Many people think that normal life is no longer possible after a TBI. Trevor knows that in many cases, with an undying sense of hope and optimism, combined with a vigilant and proactive support system, recovery and a full life can be attainable. Since its introduction, the Karr Model with its combination of comfort and tone has gained a loyal following with jazz and roots players. The slim, long “Karr neck” has even become a favorite of crossover electric players.   Carnegie Mellon University Double Bass Studio - CMU is dedicated to helping each student achieve their goals as a musician. Every week each student receives private lessons and participates in a solo class with Micah Howard. Peter Guild, another member of the PSO, teaches Orchestral Literature and Repertoire weekly. They encourage students to reach out to the great bassists in their area for lessons and direction. Many of the bassists from all of the city's ensembles are more than willing to lend a hand. Every year members of the Symphony, the Opera and the Ballet give classes and offer our students individual attention. The President recently declared the national pandemic over, but does he even 90s?! Doesn't he know we're just one South American spider away from an eight-legged army biting us all to oblivion? What about Motaba-infected monkeys that will always be there for you with a highly-contagious, eye-bleeding virus? Hasn't he ever watched 1990's Arachnophobia? Hasn't he ever seen 1995's Outbreak? Well we have, and we're here to talk about them with our bug spray and tranquilizer darts in hand...but will we use these implements of pandemic prevention on each other in our episode-ending trivia battle? Is humanity the real virus?!Only Filmshake can provide the answers to these questions.Music Heard this Episode:"Canaima Nightmare" -- Trevor Jones"They're Coming" -- James Newton Howard"Don't Bug Me" -- Jimmy BuffettSupport the show

In today's show we hear from Conservatives who are concerned about climate change. Not only are they concerned, they are engaged in meaningful action. Hannah Rogers, Trevor Jones, and Kaleb Christensen are three young people with ties to the State of Utah who are part of a growing movement in that State. They are each members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Fusing faith, hope, love for humanity and all nature, these young Conservative Christians are finding their places in the climate movement.  People of faith play a vital role in talking about the causes and impacts of climate change. They also are an essential part of the growing group of citizens and leaders stepping up to propose and pursue solutions. Our guests tell us about their faith and what motivates them to pursue Conservative climate solutions. They also reveal what they bring to the climate movement and why it is essential that they have a seat at the table.  To some they may seem like outliers, Conservatives concerned about climate change. According to a recent Gallup poll of Republican and right-leaning people ages 18-29 reveal that almost two thirds of them acknowledge climate change is caused by humans. Many of these young Conservatives are concerned about this. Older Conservatives though are not on the same page. And Progressives can be dismissive of Conservatives in the climate movement. Hannah, Trevor, and Kaleb believe the LDS Church has a unique role to play in the Republican party and the Conservative movement. The Art House You will learn about The Cli-Fi Imaginarium. A group of climate advocates in the UK were tired of so much talk about dreadful climate impacts, and not enough conversations and resources that address actual solutions. They decided that they are over dystopia. Using some of the solutions outlined in Project Drawdown, they organize free monthly on-line workshops for anyone to come and they imagine, What if? In these Intro to Cli-Fi Workshops, they ask, What if we incorporated one of these solutions? How will the world change? How will the neighborhood change?  Some of the topics include District Heating, Tree Intercropping, Refrigeration, Reducing food waste, Alternative Cement, Tidal energy, and solar thermal water. While attending one of the Intro to Cli-Fi Workshops, Citizens Climate Radio's host, Peterson Toscano, was surprised to see how such wonky solutions inspired engaging creative writing.  Anyone who attends the workshop is eligible to submit a story to the Cli-Fi Imaginarium.  This is a storehouse of creative, inspiring, and sometimes very funny stories all envisioning a world filled with practical and highly effective climate solutions. If you need a shot of inspiration and a positive vision of our future, visit The Cli-Fi Imaginarium.  You can hear standalone versions of The Art House at Artists and Climate Change.  Good News Report Our Good News Story today comes from Nate Abercrombie, Conservative Outreach Coordinator for Citizens Climate. He has good news to share with us about a recent event that brought Conservatives from all over the country to Washington, DC to talk about climate solutions. The event was a huge success.  In other Good News, Eric Fine, the  group leader of the CCL chapter in Greater New Haven, CT told us about a new limited series podcast all about carbon pricing. We hear from Casey Pickett and Naomi Shimberg, hosts of Pricing Nature. They tell us about the show and share some of the conversations they are having.  If you have good news you want to share on the show, or if you have an idea for the art house, email Peterson.
