Mega sicko and excellent human erica dreisbach joins your sickos for a scintillating bout of Guesto Mode! We discuss erica's taste in anime and gaming, her hard-fought freedom from cog hell, and her and Tom's artistic partnership! Then, we all become cancelled for agreeing that Infinite Jest is a good book that is fun to read. Follow the Sickos on Twitter @AnimeSickos Follow Joe @ShariaUncle Follow Tom @TomHarrison19
We're yammering about anime again because all podcasters are incurable nerds! Tom tricked friends of the show Gwynn Fulcher and erica dreisbach into watching Kill La Kill, a one-season anime about high school, fascism, nudity, sentient alien clothing, friendship, and murdering people with scissors. It is a POLARIZING PIECE OF WORK TO SAY THE LEAST, with exceptional writing for well-rounded women characters on one hand, and absurdly revealing magic battle armor on the other. Is it feminist? Is it sexist trash? IS IT BOTH? Tom was extremely hyped to hear erica and Gwynn weigh in and now YOU CAN TOO! This is a very fun one, check it out! P.S.: You can see erica's lavishly illustrated notes here, and I highly recommend you take a look: http://tinyurl.com/YDUKLK
It's been over a year since Shadowhawk issues 1 & 2 were acquitted of 90s era awfulness. So with 40 episodes under his belt, will host Nathaniel Wayne be as forgiving as last time? Keep in mind that an acid drooling green insectoid alien lizard thing has been added to the mix. The X-men related books so far have had the weakest showing on this podcast. Add to that, host Nathaniel Wayne's only other encounter with an "Unlimited" title was the abomination of Fantastic Four Unlimited #1. It's hard to stay optimistic, but let's see what happens. Horror abounds as flesh deforms and gets gooey this week on You Don't Understand! Writer/perfomer erica dreisbach and husband Vlad Seghete introduced Tom to John Carpenter's gory sci-fi/horror classic The Thing. erica and Vlad have long counted this movie as one of their all-time favorites. Tom is an easily terrified nebbish who would do almost anything to avoid watching a spooky movie. Did the copious amounts of tearing muscles and melting skin win him over? Listen and see, yo!
After having to thoroughly thrash his work back in Episode 7, host Nathaniel Wayne thought he was done with Rob Liefeld. He was wrong. Can he survive this second go with the Prince of Pouches? A monstrous reptile has escaped capture. A crazed bounty hunter has kidnapped a child. An overworked photographer should REALLY be staying home to be with his wife, but instead is putting on red pajamas to deal with all of it. Long before it was made into a video game so bad that people got sued over it (seriously,) a story about the Colonial Marines of the Aliens universe was brought forth by Dark Horse comics. It's pretty well remembered but will it hold up or was it just the best that could be gotten at the time? A cold has bumped the planned evisceration of another 90s comic so instead host Nathaniel Wayne rips into some extremely 90s print advertisements. Because it's easier and the guy's sick, cut him some slack. Todd McFarlane's hellbound hero is back (or at least his title is back in the rotation of this podcast,) and this time McFarlane brought in some help in the form of legendary writer Alan Moore. So fittingly, host Nathaniel Wayne recruits the assistance of legendary skinflint, Professor Alan Middleton to take a look a this tour of Spawn's version of Hell. Marvel dipped into its stable of horror titles in the 90s, which saw the revival of the "Living Vampire" (which is not distinguished in any notable way from a garden variety vampire) known as Morbius. Host Nathaniel Wayne brings in Ryan Daly to see if this vamp should be allowed to stalk the night or if he should just be staked and beheaded to end the pain for everybody involved. You can find one of Ryan's many podcasts here: http://fireandwaterpodcast.com/show/give-me-those-star-wars/ Comments can be left at 90scomicsretrial.wordpress.com Theme music composed and performed by Erica Dreisbach, whose other works can be found at www.ericaricardo.com
