Read transcriptEvery generation needs a reminder that games-based-on-movies-based-on-comics are their own strange little ecosystem, and Hellboy: The Science of Evil is a proud, slightly confused citizen of it. It doesn't adapt either del Toro movie directly. Instead it just borrows the general vibe, invents its own plot, and trusts you to recognize a giant stone fist and a wisecracking demon without needing either film's actual story. It's the video game equivalent of a cover band that only plays originals. And that giant stone fist deserves a moment, because it's doing some real character-design heavy lifting. Hellboy is built around exactly one absurdly oversized body part, and that's basically the whole design manual for a certain flavor of comic book tough guy: pick one appendage, blow it up past the point of reason, let the silhouette do the talking. Todd McFarlane ran the identical play with Spawn, except he went south instead of north, handing us a hero who could probably punt a sedan but might struggle to tie his own laces. One big fist, one big boot. Same weird design instinct, opposite ends of the body. Which is a good excuse to bring in George Marston of Spawnography, the podcast where podcast where Pierce Lydon joins in to spend their time in the giant-boot corner of that exact design philosophy. George is flying solo this round to see how a giant fist holds up against a their usual task of studying a giant boot. So pick your favorite oversized body part, brace for a beat-em-up that seems mildly allergic to its own source material, and let's find out whether The Science of Evil earns a place next to del Toro's films, or whether it belongs exactly where most tie-in games end up: forgotten. And don't forget about the Nazi occultism. Learn such things as: How close was Hellboy to being a real thing? Isn't it horrible when the game makes you have a certain item to progress, but also takes that item away because you did normal game actions? At what point does it stop being a movie tie in game and start just being a game based in the movie universe? And is there even a difference there? And so much more! The biggest comic-industry story of the week centers on serious allegations against Ed Brubaker stemming from the production of Amazon's Criminal, with Jace breaking down what has been alleged, what is actually known, and why judgment needs to wait for more facts. Also this week, Absolute Batman #24 reportedly approaches an extraordinary 487,000 orders as Barbara Gordon becomes The Bat, DC reveals Batman Day 2026, Marvel transforms Inglourious X-Force into Fugitive X-Force, Indiana Jones discovers Marvel artifacts, and Jace looks at Disney's Marvel acquisition 17 years later. Image and Ghost Machine bring updates for Ice Cream Man, Red Roots, Rook: Exodus, Geiger, Creature Corps, the Energon Universe, Spawn 77, Savage Dragon and Crowbound. BAD IDEA adds Seth Green to It Demands Sacrifice, launches Warbird, and unveils new The Detective covers, while Danny Trejo's Year of the Devil, the Soulfire Timeline Omnibus and Netflix's six newly optioned comic properties round out the news. WARDOGS is Bulkhead's 100-player, three-team tactical shooter with a real money economy — you buy your loadout every respawn, you lose money when you die, and it turns out that changes how a match actually feels. Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies presents the 63rd edition of Dead Man Still Walking, your favorite Zombie Movie Podcast hosted by Dr. Walking Dead Kyle William Bishop! This time, the good doctor returns to an older corner of zombie cinema with Umberto Lenzi's strange and unconventional Italian horror film "Nightmare City" (1980), a movie whose director apparently insisted was not a zombie movie, despite Dr. Bishop arriving at a very different diagnosis. And of course, as for me and my house, we will be believing Dr. Bishop's assessment. The infected creatures of "Nightmare City" are unlike your average shambling undead: They use knives, clubs, guns and even a harpoon gun; they appear capable of planning and communicating nonverbally; and instead of merely eating flesh, they sometimes stop to drink their victims' blood. That leaves Dr. Walking Dead pondering an especially unusual case of cinematic zombiism: Are these monsters zombies, infected humans, vampires or some bizarre hybrid of all three? Kyle examines the monsters' apparent resistance to gunfire, vulnerability to brain trauma and ambiguous method of spreading their condition while arguing that, regardless of Lenzi's objections, "Nightmare City" belongs in the zombie movie conversation. Dr. Bishop also places the film firmly within the post-Romero zombie boom, noting its conspicuous similarities to "Night of the Living Dead," "Dawn of the Dead" and the Italian zombie films that followed in Romero's wake. Kyle discusses the Dawn-like music, helicopter imagery, siege elements, Molotov cocktails and the movie's heavy-handed warning about nuclear power and radiation. Along the way, Dr. Walking Dead praises the score, questions the inconsistent gore effects, calls out some dated and misogynistic character behavior and identifies "Nightmare City" as the sort of cinematic oddity that may be worth seeing precisely because it is so strange.
