In this episode, Chris Cochrane guest-hosts for his brother Ray and devotes the whole show to one event: Disney’s D23 2026 fan convention in Anaheim. Friday night delivered Marvel’s new X-Men cast, Adam Driver as Mister Sinister, a fresh Avengers: Doomsday trailer, and a release date for Frozen 3. Saturday turned to the parks, with Villains Land, an Indiana Jones dark ride, the long-awaited Expedition Everest yeti repair, and a Monsters Inc land opening in 2027. – Want to start a podcast? Instead of six or eight unrelated stories, the entire episode covers Disney’s D23 convention, which he compares to Apple’s WWDC. For newcomers, he notes that D23 is Disney’s official fan club, named for the company’s founding year of 1923. This year’s event ran two nights at the Honda Center: Friday for movies and television, Saturday for the theme parks. Marvel Finally Casts the X-Men Friday’s headline was the X-Men. The Associated Press put the crowd near 12,000, and Marvel Studios used that stage to name its rebooted team. Christopher Abbott plays Professor Charles Xavier, Inde Navarrette plays Rogue, and Maya Boyd plays Storm. Adam Driver rounds out the group as the villain Mister Sinister. Meanwhile, Samara Weaving, Kit Connor, and Sadie Sink were already known as Emma Frost, Cyclops, and Jean Grey. Jake Schreier directs, and the film arrives May 5, 2028. Chris calls the lineup spot-on casting. He singles out Weaving as a perfect match for the comics, and he points out that Sink already appeared as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Navarrette is the least established name, coming off a breakout role in an indie horror film. Boyd, meanwhile, was the name he knew least, with what he believes is a Broadway background. Above all, Chris hopes Marvel does the team justice, and he recommends the animated revival X-Men ’97 on Disney+ as the best place to start. Frozen 3 Gets a Date and a Chaotic Reveal Frozen 3 lands November 24, 2027. That is the Wednesday of Thanksgiving week, the same slot the first two films used. The story centers on Anna and Kristoff’s wedding, which a new villain, an evil Ice Queen, disrupts. Jennifer Lee returns to direct with Trent Correy, and the full voice cast is back. However, the reveal itself fell apart. Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel performed a darker arrangement of “Frozen Heart.” Meanwhile, the audio failed, the video failed, and a set of doors never opened. Menzel asked the crowd whether they should try it again, and Bell simply narrated everything that was supposed to happen. Afterward, Josh Gad sang “Oooh, Samantha,” a new love song for Olaf. Chris is here for it, since Olaf is one of the franchise’s best comic characters. Pixar, Disney Animation, and the Rest of Friday Night Pixar chief Pete Docter laid out a packed slate. Incredibles 3 hits summer 2028 and follows Violet and Dash sneaking out at night to fight crime. Chris hopes that finally shows a grown-up Jack-Jack. Coco 2 follows in November 2029 with Benjamin Bratt returning as Ernesto de la Cruz. That has fans puzzling over how a villain already in the Land of the Dead comes back. Additionally, Pixar showed an original called Ghost Market and a Venice-set cat film called Gatto. On the Disney Animation side, Zootopia 3 is confirmed. The live-action Tangled arrives March 31, 2028 with Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel. Chris considers that casting perfect after her turn in Agatha All Along. A live-action Lilo & Stitch sequel, a new Simpsons movie, a Bluey movie, and a Kingdom Hearts anime series round out the list. For Star Wars fans, Ahsoka returns January 20, 2027. Chris also offers a hot take: he prefers Rogue One to the entire sequel trilogy. Consequently, he welcomes original stories like Ryan Gosling’s upcoming Starfighter. Adam Driver Is Mister Sinister Driver appeared by video rather than in person. He told the crowd that he and Kevin Feige had talked for years about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Then he announced he would play Magneto. After a long pause, he corrected himself to Nathaniel Milbury, which is Mister Sinister’s human alias. The gag landed because fans had floated Driver for Magneto for years. For anyone new to the comics, Chris explains that Mister Sinister is a geneticist obsessed with mutant DNA, a manipulator rather than a brawler. The cast met backstage only minutes earlier, so Chris is curious how their chemistry develops. Notably, Christopher Abbott previously worked with Driver on HBO’s Girls. The script comes from Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-showrunner Joanna Calo, two prestige-television names that have Chris excited. Why the X-Men Took Thirty Years to Reach the MCU A business story underlies the casting. In the 1990s, a financially struggling Marvel sold film rights to raise cash. Fox ended up with the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, and Sony took Spider-Man. As a result, Marvel Studios built its connected universe from 2008 onward without some of its most famous characters. The Hugh Jackman era of X-Men films belonged to Fox, with a separate continuity and no crossovers. That changed in 2019, when Disney closed its $71 billion purchase of 21st Century Fox’s film and television studio. Most coverage framed the deal as a streaming play, but it also brought the X-Men home. Chris sums it up neatly: Disney signed the paperwork in 2019, cast the film in 2026, and audiences see it in 2028. Ryan Gosling’s Starfighter, Ghost Rider, and VisionQuest Lucasfilm dated Star Wars: Starfighter for May 28, 2027. Gosling plays Kade Auberon, a pilot from the wrong side of the galaxy tied to the fastest starfighter ever built. Before he walked out, Disney played clips of him as a kid on The Mickey Mouse Club. Gosling said the company changed his life then and is changing it again now. He is also playing Ghost Rider in the Marvel universe. That thrills Chris, since Nicolas Cage last carried the character on the big screen. Meanwhile, the Disney+ series VisionQuest arrives October 14. Paul Bettany returns as Vision and James Spader as Ultron, and the trailer drops the two androids into oddly mundane human situations. Bettany joked that Vision has “rather inconveniently died several times.” Chris agrees the character has been through the wringer since WandaVision. The Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Avengers: Doomsday opens December 18, with Joe and Anthony Russo directing. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell introduced the new footage. It offers the clearest look yet at Downey as Doctor Doom, who fights off Thor and takes his hammer. Evans appears as Captain America holding a baby, and Ian McKellen shows up as a haggard, long-haired Magneto. One quieter shot has Doom staring at a portrait of a lost wife and child. That frames him as a grieving avenger rather than a world-ender. He also commands an army of comic-accurate Sentinels. The cast pulls from the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the legacy Fox X-Men, including Patrick Stewart. Hugh Jackman also appeared on screen to say he is willing to return as Wolverine, though that was not a confirmation. Chris, a self-described Marvel nerd, closes with a theory. He suspects the MCU’s Tony Stark was actually Victor von Doom, adopted by the Starks, which would explain the Downey casting. He also predicts the Fox-era X-Men die off in this film and that Thor may be the major casualty. If it happens, he wants credit for calling it. Disney Parks Around the World Saturday’s Disney Experiences showcase covered parks, resorts, and cruise ships, with Neil Patrick Harris hosting. Hong Kong Disneyland gets an Avengers pavilion that reshapes its Stark Expo skyline. Shanghai Disneyland is building the first land devoted entirely to Spider-Man, complete with a new coaster. Since Spider-Man is his favorite hero, Chris hopes to visit once it opens. Closer to home, Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure is doubling in size with two rides opening in 2028. Avengers: Infinity Defense brings back Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Chris Hemsworth, and Downey, while Stark Flight Lab adds Brie Larson. A Coco boat ride into the Land of the Dead is also coming, with no height requirement. Chris admits he prefers California Adventure to Disneyland because the rides are better. Overseas, Disneyland Paris will retire its Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain overlay at the end of 2027 and restore the original Jules Verne theme. Paris also gets the first ride ever based on The Lion King. Tokyo Disneyland adds Sugar Rush: Sweet Rescue, the first Wreck-It Ralph ride, plus a Space Mountain launch sequence designed with YouTuber Mark Rober. Finally, Disney Cruise Line announced three more ships, including the Disney Believe in 2027 and an entirely new class in 2029. Back in Anaheim, Tomorrowland is getting reimagined, which Chris welcomes because the land badly needs an update. The Magic Happens parade and the Remember Dreams Come True fireworks are both returning. For the tech crowd, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run now has a Fortnite crossover, where in-game missions unlock content on the real ride. Every New Walt Disney World Ride and Land Chris ranks the Florida parks Hollywood Studios first, then Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Magic Kingdom. Magic Kingdom leads the announcements with Villains Land, now the official name. It features a Maleficent coaster through an enchanted briar and a boat ride through the Evil Queen’s catacombs. Reporting puts its scale near Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and Glenn Close appeared in character as Cruella to announce it. Piston Peak, the Cars area replacing Tom Sawyer Island, adds two more rides, though their exact names remain unsettled. Additionally, the Carousel of Progress gets new scenes and a recast. Jamie Lee Curtis and Bryan Cranston will voice Mom and Dad starting late spring 2027. Chris, invoking Heisenberg, calls Cranston the GOAT. At Animal Kingdom, the Indiana Jones ride now has a name: Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent. It tells an original 1950 story inside a Maya temple, and Harrison Ford personally served as the physical model for the animatronic. Nearby, the Tropical Americas land brings Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto, with more than fifty animal animatronics and no height requirement. Then comes the fix park regulars have wanted for years. The Expedition Everest yeti broke soon after the ride opened. Rather than fix it, Disney lit it with a strobe for over a decade, earning the nickname disco yeti. Now it is being repaired and returned to full motion. Chris rates Everest among his top five rides anywhere, and he suggests riding it before the fix so you can compare. Over at Epcot, Spaceship Earth gets its first major story rewrite in nearly twenty years, shifting from communication history to human connection. Dreamfinder also returns to Journey Into Imagination, and Disney Experiences chairman Thomas Mazloum introduced that news with two words: “we heard you.” Mazloum added that Disney has more projects underway than at any point in its history. After this rundown, Chris believes him. Monsters Inc Land Opens in 2027 Monstropolis begins opening at Hollywood Studios in early 2027, but in stages. The headline door coaster will not be ready on day one. It is the first suspended coaster in any Disney park. It also uses Disney’s first vertical lift, hauling riders about forty feet straight up before launching them into the door vault. Instead, the land opens with the Glob Theater’s “Welcome to Monstropolis” show and Harryhausen’s, a working sushi restaurant lifted from the first film. The stage show features an original song by Randy Newman, his first ever written for a theme park attraction. Chris also notes that the restaurant name honors stop-motion legend Ray Harryhausen. Wrapping up, Chris names the X-Men casting and the Doomsday trailer as his favorite moments of the weekend. He hopes to cover more movie news on future shows, and he plugs Dune: Part Three, which also opens December 18. Chris signs off with the usual mentions: GNC Insider at geeknewscentral.com/insider, email at geeknews@gmail.com, the newsletter, and modern podcast apps at podcastapps.com. The MCU X-MEN cast is here: Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm & Adam Driver as Mister Sinister. Naturally, everyone is being extremely calm and reasonable about it. We also dig into the AVENGERS DOOMSDAY news of David Harbour confirming Tony Stark?! Dave Bautista taking over as KRATOS in Amazon's GOD OF WAR series, and the LANTERNS fallout surrounding Hal Jordan's Death Scene — because apparently fandom needed a few more things to argue about this week. Plus: Shawn Levy & Ryan Gosling's GHOST RIDER coming together almost immediately while BLADE remains trapped somewhere in the Quantum Realm of development, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II speaking out about WONDER MAN, and the bigger question tying all of this together: Marvel. Two years after its surprising first season, X-Men '97 returns to Disney Plus as the series dives straight into what was teased in the 2024 finale: Apocalypse. Can the show follow up its lean, gangbusters debut season with something just as worthwhile? Or will the loss of creator and writer Beau DeMayo spell trouble for this lore-heavy animated series? We discuss the eleventh hour changes, a show without its steward, and what we thought of X-Men '97's turbulent storylines.

# X-Men '97 Season 2 ReviewRC the Commission and co-host Sam Howe break down the highs and lows of X-Men '97 Season 2, from the show's crowded storytelling and uneven pacing to the emotional fallout around Magneto, Gambit, Rogue, and Wolverine. They also look ahead to Season 3, including where the series might go with Graydon Creed, Onslaught, Krakoa, and a more politically charged mutant conflict.## Key topics- In this episode, RC the Commission and Sam Howe give their overall Season 2 score and both settle on a mixed response, with Sam landing at a 6 out of 10.- They argue that the season felt wildly uneven, especially after the Wolverine standalone episode, which Sam calls the standout of the season.- They discuss how the season seemed to suffer from rewrites after Bo DeMeo's exit, including the possibility that an originally planned 10 episode season was cut down.- They compare Season 2 to Season 1, saying the first season worked better because it had decades of X-Men history to build on, while Season 2 had to build mostly from scratch.- They criticize the back half of the season for feeling overloaded, with too many characters and arcs competing for space, including Polaris, Danger, Gambit, Rogue, Storm, Weapon X, and X-Factor.- They talk about how the season often used characters as plot pieces rather than giving them meaningful development, especially Rogue, Storm, Mystique, and Graydon Creed.- They break down the Gambit storyline and say his return, sacrifice, and emotional payoff felt muddled despite the character's importance.- They praise Nightcrawler's trial scene with Graydon Creed as one of the best character moments of the season, especially for how it handled forgiveness and self hatred.- They say the show lost some of its political edge in the second half, with Graydon Creed's rise to power feeling rushed and underexplained.- They look ahead to Season 3 and expect the series to move toward a stronger mutant versus government conflict, possibly involving Krakoa, Onslaught, and a more adversarial Xavier and Cyclops dynamic.## Timestamps00:00 - Opening the Season 2 review and setting expectations 00:43 - First impressions and overall score 01:57 - Why Season 2 felt more crowded than Season 1 04:08 - Original plans for Onslaught, Polaris, and the Age of Apocalypse 06:05 - Rogue, Storm, and the emotional weight problem 07:31 - Why the Wolverine episode worked and where it fell short 09:24 - Death, resurrection, and why consequences felt cheap 11:31 - Story prioritization over character development 13:13 - The abandoned Onslaught setup and rewritten back half 16:35 - Xavier and Magneto as emotional subtext 18:35 - The season's weakened political viewpoint 20:55 - Graydon Creed, Val Cooper, and rushed government plotting 24:06 - Nightcrawler's standout trial scene 25:42 - Why Danger EXE was the weakest episode 27:48 - Too many new characters, too little time at the school 29:24 - Why Season 1 felt more specific and satisfying 31:18 - Where Season 3 could go from here 34:15 - Xavier and Cyclops as morally gray leaders 39:29 - Thoughts on casting and the MCU's mutant setup 41:34 - How Spider-Man: Brand New Day overstuffed its story 43:14 - Early casting reactions, including Adam Driver as Mr. Sinister 45:36 - Krakoa, Genosha, and the next mutant status quo 47:02 - Favorite part of the season: returning to the X-Men world 49:47 - Worst part of the season: lack of direction and consequence 51:17 - Why Gambit's arc was the biggest disappointment 52:44 - Favorite late-season moment: Xavier's attack on Apocalypse 53:47 - Why Season 3 needs to arrive faster and do more 55:07 - Closing thoughts and Patreon shoutout## Notable quotes> “It is a wildly uneven season.”> “The best writing is so specific that it becomes universal.”> “I need to go back and watch anything from my childhood.”

Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes. At D23 last week, Disney's fan event showcasing much of their upcoming film and tv projects, we were at last treated to a full trailer for VisionQuest, which will debut October 14 on Disney+. The third and final installment of the trilogy that includes WandaVision and Agatha All Along, VisionQuest looks like it will send us on a trippy ride with The Vision, played by Paul Bettany. Those of us angsting for Avengers: Doomsday story crumbs were also treated with a special look presented for the December blockbuster. The shorter trailer, which was first shown at San Diego Comic Con, starts with dialogue from Sue Storm, indicating our MCU Fantastic Four team is connected to Robert Downey, Jr.'s Victor von Doom. One of the most anticipated announcements in MCU history took place at D23, when Marvel Studios exec Kevin Feige announced the cast of the upcoming X-Men film. The cast includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver will be playing the villainous Mr. Sinister. The movie will be released on May 5, 2028 nearly 10 years after the Disney acquisition of Fox Studios and will kick off the three MCU movies coming out in 2028. The other big nerd-dom announcement at D23 was the release of a first trailer for Ahsoka season 2, which will premiere on January 20, 2027, on Disney+. Lars Mikkelson's Thrawn returns as the big bad for the Rebel Alliance, while in a galaxy truly far, far, away, Ahsoka and Sabine battle themselves and mystic threats while coming face to face with what it means to be a Jedi. This look at the show may clue us in as to why the debut date got pushed to next year. Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling were also at D23 where a clip from Star Wars: Starfighter was shown, but has not yet been released publicly.Peacock has released the first trailer for season 2 of The Office spin off The Paper. The full season drops on September 9. At D23, Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed to Deadline that Johnny Depp is in early talks to reprise his role as Jack Sparrow in an upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. Sources also emphasize that Depp will serve as a side character, not a central character in the upcoming film. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has passed the $2 billion dollar mark after just 3 weeks in theaters, becoming the eighth film in history to hit the benchmark. The film is the second fastest to hit this mark only behind Avengers: Endgame. At D23, Disney offered up the first look at the live action adaptation of Tangled, which stars Teagan Croft, Milo Manheim, and Kathryn Hahn. The studio also announced a release date of March 31, 2028. Hayden Panettiere, known for her roles on shows such as Heroes and Nashville has died at the age of 36. At D23, Pixar showed off some very early concept art for Incredibles 3 and Coco 2. Incredibles 3 will debut on June 16, 2028 and Coco 2 is currently set for a November 2029 release. HBO has announced a season 2 renewal for It: Welcome to Derry, the It prequel series from Warner Bros. Television and executive producers Andy and Barbara Muschietti. At D23, Disney showed some early images of the live action Lilo & Stitch 2, which currently has a release date of May 28, 2028.

Emotional maturity takes the long way home, and Homer's Odyssey has been quietly saying so for 2,800 years. Underneath Christopher Nolan's new adaptation sits a poem that Tony thinks is one of the best pieces of therapy literature ever written, and almost nobody reads it that way. The monsters aren't the point — they're the muse. Every obstacle Odysseus meets is asking whether he's willing to become somebody different, and if you've been away too long from your sense of self, from the marriage you thought you'd have, from the body you used to trust, from the faith that used to hand you certainty, or from the person you were sure you'd be by now, this one tends to land. In this episode: Meet the Lotus Eaters as experiential avoidance — coping that doesn't start as self-sabotage, it starts because it works, and then it quietly moves the destination Borrow a rule from Tony's ultra-running days, beware of the chair, and notice how many races end beside a space heater rather than on a cliff Tie yourself to the mast with a Ulysses contract, the decision your calm Tuesday afternoon self makes on behalf of your 11 p.m. Friday night self Watch the Cyclops moment show up in a marriage, when "See, I told you so" reaches back and drags a conflict you'd already escaped into your future Sit with David Schnarch's differentiation, and the difference between other-validated and self-validated intimacy Tony Overbay is a licensed marriage and family therapist who has spent over twenty years watching people discover they didn't know what they didn't know. The Odyssey: Did Christopher Nolan Get Homer Wrong?

With Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey bringing Homer's ancient epic back into the spotlight, Cultish sits down with Professor Owen Anderson to explore what lies beneath the gods, monsters, and legendary hero's journey. From the polytheistic world of Homer to the deeper spiritual ideas that have shaped Western storytelling, the conversation asks whether Nolan is simply adapting a pagan classic—or transforming it into something very different.  What if Odysseus' greatest enemy isn't Poseidon, the Cyclops, or the journey home—but his own sin?  And what if this ancient pagan story ultimately points toward something the Greek gods could never provide: redemption?    The conversation explores the striking contrast between the traditional pagan hero's journey and what Professor Anderson describes as a distinctly Christian arc of sin, confession, sacrifice, and redemption. Along the way, the episode examines Greek mythology, the biblical worldview, the spiritual reality behind pagan gods, and the enduring influence Christianity has had on the way the Western world understands stories like The Odyssey. Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Marvel Studios appears to have found the leader of its new mutant team, as Deadline reported last week that Heartstopper and Warfare star Kit Connor has landed the role of Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, in the future MCU X-Men film. Sources say Connor went through much the same process as Samara Weaving, who was attached as Emma Frost the week prior, meeting with Schreier and Marvel president Kevin Feige alongside a group of candidates who tested after the July 4th holiday before the studio settled on him. Neither Marvel nor Connor has confirmed the casting, and the film, written by Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-creator Joanna Calo, still has no release date. Cyclops has been played on screen before by James Marsden and Tye Sheridan, with Marsden set to reprise the role in December's Avengers: Doomsday. Sony and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed the one-billion-dollar mark overseas in just twelve days of release, making it the second-fastest film ever to reach that number abroad behind Avengers: Endgame. The Destin Daniel Cretton film now stands at $1.67 billion worldwide, split between $654.3 million domestically and $1.013 billion internationally, which makes it the twelfth highest-grossing movie of all time and only the sixteenth ever to clear a billion in foreign markets alone. Universal had a milestone of its own to celebrate, as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey passed $1.1 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing film of his career ahead of The Dark Knight Rises, while also becoming the biggest IMAX release ever with $289 million, and it still has China to open on Friday. James Gunn spent part of a Threads session last week putting down one of the most persistent rumors surrounding Matt Reeves' Batman trilogy, telling a fan who asked whether The Batman Part III was being filmed simultaneously with Part II simply, “I can deny.” The theory had gained steam over years of delays, most recently when a redesigned Part II logo appeared to work a Roman numeral III into the artwork, and it offered fans a tidy explanation for why the sequel has taken so long to arrive. In reality, Part II only began principal photography in London in June, and Warner Bros. has already pushed the film from October 2027 to February 18, 2028. Sony and Nintendo's live-action The Legend of Zelda has cast Australian actor Uli Latukefu as Ganondorf under a multi-picture deal, with Severance's Dichen Lachman playing Impa and The Handmaid's Tale's Yvonne Strahovski reported as a queen character. The late Sam Neill also filmed an undisclosed role before his death on July 13, marking one of the final screen performances of his career.Gareth Edwards has exited Universal and Amblin's untitled Jurassic World Rebirth sequel over creative differences, with the studios now searching for a replacement; David Koepp's script is finished and Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey are all still expected back for a 2027 shoot.A24 released the full trailer for Primetime, the Lance Oppenheim drama that Robert Pattinson produces and stars in as To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen, in theaters September 25.Lionsgate has confirmed that Michael 2 is targeting a production start toward the end of this year or in early 2027, with the sequel to this year's Michael Jackson biopic aiming for a 2028 release.Lionsgate is also developing a new Leprechaun film written by horror veterans Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, reviving a franchise that ran eight movies between 1993 and 2018.Nicholas Hoult has been cast in season 2 of HBO's Harry Potter series as Gilderoy Lockhart, a major character in The Chamber of Secrets that was portrayed by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film adaptation.

This week, we bounce from questionable kindergarten teaching techniques and a tour through old movies to a pile of upcoming sci-fi and superhero projects. Then, in Future or Now, AI gives hurricane forecasters a potentially huge advantage, NASA pulls off another bit of engineering wizardry to keep Voyager 2 alive, and the cast of The Pitt boldly goes where plenty of actors have gone before. Real Life Steven is officially over summer. Heat, summer schedules, summer in general—it's time to move on. Meanwhile, Ben has been watching OLD MOVIES, including Kindergarten Cop. Ben calls it an "exceptional film," but watching Arnold Schwarzenegger take control of a classroom in 2026 raises some questions. How would Detective John Kimble's teaching methods stack up against modern school employee safety training? How many policies would he violate before lunch? And perhaps most unsettling: just how old are all those kindergarteners today? That sends us down the inevitable road of examining an old movie through the lens of people who now have entirely too much experience with how schools actually operate. Steven also has a pile of upcoming genre television and movie news to talk about. Neuromancer is headed to Apple TV, while Blade Runner 2099 is coming as a limited series on Prime Video. San Diego Comic-Con also brought news about Ghost Rider and Black Panther 3, along with more X-Men casting news involving Cyclops, Emma Frost, Beast, and Professor X. Trailer Links: Neuromancer: Watch on YouTube Blade Runner 2099: Watch on YouTube Devon has been doing some family movie watching, working through the Jumanji movies and eventually arriving at Zathura. Technically part of the larger Jumanji family, Zathura doesn't quite live up to its predecessor. It doesn't help that Dax Shepard's character has to exist in the shadow of Robin Williams, which leads to the assessment that Shepard comes across as "a block of wood" by comparison. Things get considerably darker with The Long Walk, based on Stephen King's novel originally published under his Richard Bachman pseudonym. Devon found the adaptation interesting and well done—but extremely bleak. That conversation somehow takes a detour through Time Runner before eventually landing on Hokum and its supernatural layer. Future or Now AI Gets Better at Predicting Hurricanes Ben brings us a potentially enormous development in weather forecasting. Google DeepMind's WeatherNext AI system has demonstrated an ability to improve hurricane forecasts, potentially giving forecasters and emergency planners an additional day of warning. The system predicts both storm tracks and intensity and can rapidly generate thousands of possible scenarios. During Hurricane Melissa, it reportedly identified major intensification earlier than conventional forecasting models. That's potentially life-saving extra time for communities preparing for a major storm. But there's an interesting wrinkle: like many sophisticated AI systems, exactly how the model reaches some of its conclusions isn't always clear to the scientists using it. That makes WeatherNext another fascinating example of AI producing useful results while simultaneously raising questions about how much we need to understand a system before we're comfortable relying on it. And despite the improvement in modeling, humans aren't leaving the process. Meteorologists still have to interpret the information, communicate uncertainty, and turn forecasts into useful warnings for the public. Read the Ars Technica report on DeepMind's hurricane forecasting breakthrough This Week in Space: Voyager's "Big Bang" Nearly half a century after leaving Earth, Voyager 2 is still going, and NASA engineers are once again finding creative ways to keep it alive. In an operation nicknamed the "Big Bang," engineers simultaneously shut down power-hungry hardware and transitioned to lower-power alternatives while carefully keeping the spacecraft warm enough to survive. Voyager's dwindling power supply has forced NASA to make increasingly difficult decisions about which systems can remain operational, making every additional bit of usable energy precious. It's another remarkable chapter in a mission launched in 1977 that is still returning scientific data from interstellar space. Read more about the Voyager 2 operation at ScienceDaily Explore NASA's Voyager mission And while we're talking about space, we check back in on New Asgard and ask the important question: is Devon still going to space? The Pitt Goes to Star Trek Finally, there's an unusual crossover coming for fans of The Pitt and Star Trek. Noah Wyle and members of The Pitt cast are participating in a Star Trek table read benefiting the Writers Guild Foundation. It's not a new Trek series and it's not some bizarre medical-drama crossover episode—but it is an opportunity to hear a completely different cast tackle Star Trek material while supporting the foundation's programs. Read more about The Pitt cast's Star Trek table read at TrekMovie   From aging action comedies to AI-powered hurricane forecasts and a spacecraft that refuses to die, this week is a reminder that the future has a funny way of colliding with the past. Join us next time for more science, sci-fi, and whatever unexpected detours we stumble into along the way.

00:01:16 — 250 Episodes, Give or Take: The crew celebrates the 250th episode while openly admitting nobody is going back to count, which feels like the correct BLC accounting method. 00:02:16 — The Fred Intro Goes Off the Rails: Parker introduces Fred as “the Man in the Hall with the Big Balls” and “the Night Hawk with the Big Cowk,” immediately justifying the episode title's general energy. 00:03:30 — Back to School Relief: The guys celebrate kids going back to school like they just won a prison break in reverse. 00:05:06 — Pay Them Bus Drivers: Fred explains the bus driver delay situation, and the crew turns into a surprisingly pro-labor podcast for a few minutes. 00:11:29 — The Quarter Incident Begins: Fred's son gets quarters from a church lady, starts counting them upstairs, and somehow turns loose change into an emergency room visit. 00:13:58 — “I Swallowed a Quarter”: The video description of Fred's son casually revealing the problem while the dog goes insane is perfect family-chaos cinema. 00:16:47 — ER Time: The X-ray shows the quarter stuck near the top of his chest, turning a weird kid decision into actual horror movie material. 00:20:57 — Which Way Did They Go In?: The guys discuss how the doctors removed the quarter, and the whole conversation gets as medically unhelpful as possible. 00:23:02 — “That Boy Make It?” Fred's uncle reacts to the hospital news with the most direct family follow-up imaginable. 00:27:04 — Parker's Odyssey Begins: Parker admits he went to see The Odyssey on Spider-Man opening night, surrounded by costumes, cops, and people being told to take their masks off. 00:30:16 — Wrong-Day Tickets: Parker realizes he bought tickets for the next day only after being confronted by the rightful seat owners. 00:31:05 — The Odyssey of Seeing The Odyssey: Allan points out that Parker's movie theater struggle has become its own Odyssey, complete with sirens, harpies, and management. 00:36:02 — Cyclops Eye Review: Parker gets hung up on the Cyclops design and why a one-eyed monster still looked like it had spaces for two eyes. 00:39:15 — The Sirens Don't Sing: Parker is annoyed that the movie never lets the audience hear the sirens' song, which was apparently the one mythological concert he came for. 00:45:50 — Chainsaw Centaur Robot: Fredline News introduces a seven-foot chainsaw-wielding wildfire robot that the crew immediately identifies as nightmare fuel. 00:49:11 — Double-Dogging / Double-Donging It: The guys try to figure out the anatomy of the robot and accidentally land in episode-title territory. 00:50:52 — Tour de France Bra Cheating: Women's cycling allegedly has a padded-bra aerodynamics controversy, and the crew handles it with exactly the maturity expected. 00:54:31 — Super Glue Is Not a Condom: Fredline News delivers a story so bad the moral is painfully clear: just use the free condom. 00:57:00 — Gordon Ram-C: The Gordon Ramsay lookalike adult-film story turns into a badger-den mystery and a fake porn-name workshop. 01:04:30 — 250-Episode Reflection: Fred says what he has learned in 250 episodes: he probably should not be doing podcasts. For ten years, Odysseus fights his way past hostile gods just to reach Ithaca—Poseidon, the Sirens, the Cyclops, and more. Here’s the difference: we don’t have to fight our way home. Send us Fan MailWelcome back to DMR! Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has officially stormed global box offices, pulling in a massive $912 million approx. worldwide and rapidly tracking straight toward the coveted $1 billion mark. Driven by Nolan's trademark practical scale and an A-list ensemble led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Anne Hathaway, this adaptation breathes gritty, high-stakes life into Homer's ancient text. The film naturally invites heavy comparisons to past sword-and-sandal historical epics, most notably Wolfgang Petersen's Troy (2004) and Zack Snyder's 300 (2007). While Troy leaned into gritty historical realism and 300 traded in hyper-stylized graphic novel aesthetics, Nolan successfully bridges the gap between the two. He marries the massive, grounded military scale of 2000s historical dramas with a dark, myth-heavy fantasy layer, pushing the boundaries of what a modern blockbuster epic can achieve; with scenes like the Cyclops cave, to the immersive giant whirlpool, Nolan takes us on an epic journey! Ultimately, The Odyssey stands out by refusing to shy away from the supernatural elements of the original myth while maintaining the hard-hitting gravity expected of a Nolan production. Whether it's destined to outlast the legacy of films like Troy and 300 in the cultural zeitgeist is still up for debate, but its jaw-dropping technical execution and box office dominance make it an essential cinematic event. Dewey discusses the pros and cons of the film and where he feels it fits within the Nolan cinematic universe - Is this Nolan's best? Chapters: 0:00 Intro + Audible Free Trial 3:55 What is The Odyssey 11:33 The Cast & Crew 22:08 The Odyssey Themes27:22 The Verdict If you like this deep dive, kindly like, comment and subscribe!Be sure to grab you 30 day free Audible trialon behalf of DMR, link below: https://amzn.to/4pGWOKf#theodyssey, #christophernolan, #mattdamon, #boxofficehit, #blockbuster2026, #moviereview, #filmcritic, #epicmovie, #cinema, #filmcommunitySupport the showThe audio/video clips used in this podcast, including excerpts from movie/series/documentary trailers, are used under the principles of fair use and fair dealing for the purpose of criticism, commentary, and review. Amy drops an emergency Unspooled episode to unpack Christopher Nolan's epic take on The Odyssey, joined by USC classics professor Lucas Herrenroeder. Together they compare Homer's original poem with Nolan's bold reinterpretation, exploring everything from its Bronze Age authenticity and towering Cyclops sequence to the film's treatment of Circe, the sirens, and the gods themselves. Along the way, they debate what Nolan changes, what he leaves behind, and how his version reframes Odysseus as a flawed hero.
