Doug saw The Odyssey on opening weekend. Justin saw it the following Wednesday in IMAX 70mm. They both walked out saying the same thing: that is cinema at its finest. The full review is here. Justin's IMAX 70mm experience gets the full breakdown first. Every frame deliberately composed, the sheer amount of visual information on screen, the walk back to see the giant film spools running the projector. Then the film itself: what Nolan got right about scale, spectacle, and practical effects. The Cyclops was built using a combination of a massive puppet for the actors to work around and a real actor in full prosthetics and makeup on a scaled-down set, composited together the old-school way. The giants were played by actual seven-foot-tall people standing next to a stunt double under five feet tall. No CGI shortcut. No painted-in crowd. A thousand extras on the day they shot the Land of the Dead. Jon Bernthal in the water for half a day, approaching hypothermia, refusing to come out until they had the shot. Also in this episode: a significant announcement. Mind Gap Podcast is ending at Episode 550. Then: a deep dive into the Book of the Dead LitRPG series by RynoZ, which Doug is now three books into and cannot stop recommending. The world-building concept is that at age eighteen you put your hand on a stone and get assigned your permanent class, whether that is a farmer, a bard, an accountant, or a banned necromancer on the run from the government. This leads to a conversation about what class each host would want to be awakened into. Doug says cook. Justin says Urban Explorer, which is not a real class in the book but seems accurate. JP brings Project Hail Mary, Lawrence of Arabia, After Hours, and The Odyssey to the table, with House of the Dragon and Silo on the TV side.Then the news, and it's a good one this week.The Odyssey opened to $124.5 million domestically and $264.1 million globally — Nolan's biggest worldwide opening ever, beating The Dark Knight Rises. The only films that opened bigger this year are Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Jon Bernthal filmed the Trojan Horse sequence submerged in cold water, Nolan offered to pull him out, and Bernthal's response was essentially: try harder. The film has no real competition until Spider-Man on July 31, which gives it room to run on a $250 million budget that needs the legs.And then — the Avengers: Doomsday trailer dropped this morning. First proper look at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Thor rallying heroes, closing with "we need a miracle" before turning around stunned at a "hey pal." Channing Tatum as Gambit. He's the best there is at what he does and what he does is stoically scold people while blasting people with his concussive eye beams! Cyclops is often portrayed in cartoons and movies as a big ol' dork and fuddy duddy rules follower but the guy has been through a lot in the comics and has a lot of emotional depth. Mike takes Jake and Holden through the history and this X-man's evolution as creators take him from a mopey loner to a strategic genius to an all powerful mutant zealot that even scares Magneto. And yeah, maybe he's not the coolest. But really, that's what makes him cool.
