WHEN I SAW MUSHROOM HEAD, I WAS BORN AND I WAS DEADIt's the Drifting Reviewniverse #3 and Gary Lactus, Al To Astonish and Maid Of Nails are supposed to be examining Ghost Rider #11 (Marvel, 1975). Unfortunately Maid Of Nails has gone missing and the adverts are far too interesting to concentrate on the comic itself. Despite this and quite amazingly, what you have here is an hour and a half of enthusiastic dissection that covers less than half the comic! We're going to have to dive back in for Part 2 next week. "I don't care about which spirit ladies do what to which Cajuns, I'm here to stop a wedding." One of the gradual changes apparent in season two's more episodic format, with more zoomed-in, character-centric stories is the corresponding zoom-out on human-mutant relations as a unifying theme. That's not to say it's gone entirely by the wayside - domestic terrorist group the Friends of Humanity and President Kelly's unpopular newfound support for mutants were introduced as conflicts in the season premiere and continue to simmer in the background. The more globe-trotting adventures of subsequent episodes are less overtly concerned with these familiar social dynamics than with the exploration of character backstories, but they can still be read as having something to say about the issue, albeit through more of a geopolitical lens (i.e. the oppression or exploitation of mutants by the state, as dictated by wavering national interests). So while the societal angle might have ceased to be the driving force of every plot, it has managed to play some small part at least in all of this season's one-and-done installments. That is, until "X-Ternally Yours." Here we have the first episode of X-Men to be completely divorced from the social implications of mutants in the world at large. That's not necessarily to say the plot is worse off for it -- just that it is undeniably laden in backstory and melodrama. It's Gambit's turn to play protagonist, in a tale of star-crossed lovers with a little Cajun flair. There's perhaps an irony to be observed in the fact that the Thieves and Assassins, so caught up in their insular, centuries-old feud, fail to recognize how the existence of mutants could drastically shift the balance of power, absent the involvement of an ...external... benefactor. As it stands, both Guilds are completely indifferent to Gambit's status as a mutant, which could serve as a convincing motive for the Thieves in particular to bring him back into the fold. The episode has no time for that, however, as it must devote its runtime to establishing the stakes between these warring factions, the role of the tithing ceremony, contrivances to undermine said ceremony, Gambit's history with his jilted bride-to-be, and the X-Men doing their level best to untangle it all. Much of this is deeply silly, of which the script seems keenly aware as it gives Wolverine in particular some choice one-liners that threaten to invalidate the entire conflict. And yet, "X-Ternally Yours" manages to remain more charming than it is disposable by taking advantage of a fun setting and ratcheting up the soapy entertainment so intrinsic to some of the most memorable X-Men comics. Marvel was understandingly eager to capitalize on Gambit's growing popularity at this time as a new, breakout star character. Striking while the iron was hot, and in an effort to gauge the X-Man's potential as a solo headliner, an eponymous limited series was published that would provide much of the source material for "X-Ternally Yours." In another serendipitous example of cross-media symmetry, said series wound up being released concurrently with the episode's airing (issue #3 of 4 was a little over two weeks away from hitting stores and newsstands). As a standalone television episode, it is less successful than its comics counterpart in giving Gambit a mythology to call his own. That said, given Gambit's versability as a natural lead in any number of genres, from action, to adventure, to romance, to crime, it's curious why Marvel felt that such convoluted world-building was additive in the first place. Regardless, positioning Gambit as a spin-off character was less of a concern for the animated series. Factoring in the production timeline for comics versus that of animation, the show staff would've been working from incredibly early drafts and concept art. When taken as an adaptation of a story that had yet to even be told, it could've turned out a lot worse. X-TRA: Ghost Rider, who "appeared" as a brief mental image during Gambit's mind scan in "The Final Decision" (S1E12), regrettably does not factor into this blast from the past. Other than serving as one of the series many cameos inserted by director Larry Houston, character's significance to Gambit is presumably referencing an unlikely comics crossover: the team-up between Ghost Rider and the X-Men against parasitic aliens the Brood set in New Orleans! Spanning X-Men #8-9 and Ghost Rider #26-27 during the tail end of Jim Lee's tenure as X-Men co-plotter and artist in 1992, this story features the first appearance of Bella Donna Boudreaux and introduction of the Guilds, setting the stage for Gambit's 1993 limited series and its deep dive into the lore.

Ghost Rider is an adaptation of the Marvel comic featuring Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze, a stunt motorcyclist who makes a deal with the devil and transforms into a fiery-skulled antihero. As the 14th entry in our “Marvel before the MCU” series, the film offers some entertaining action sequences and striking CGI effects. ----more---- Thank you so much for listening! It's Tuesday, February 25th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Muslims beheaded 70 Christians in Congo The Islamic State of Central Africa Province, a terrorist group, is reported to have killed 107 Christians between mid-October 2024 and early January 2025 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In fact, more than 5,000 Christians have been killed by this Muslim terrorist group since October of 2017, according to figures recorded by the Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium. This just in. International Christian Concern reports that the Islamic State of Central Africa Province, formerly known as Allied Democratic Forces, is thought to be responsible for the horrific massacre of 70 Christians by beheading in Congo's eastern Lubero Territory near the country's border with Uganda and Rwanda last week. Pray for the Congo. It's the 35th most dangerous country worldwide for Christians, according to Open Doors. God transformed Central Asian prison with Bible In their March/April Magazine, Barnabas Aid included an article entitled ”God's Word Unchained.” (page 13) It tells the story of a Christian woman who was released from prison in Central Asia after serving four years. The unnamed Christian was able to smuggle a Bible into the prison. When administrators confronted her, she told them, “The Bible is God's Word and shows you the way for eternal life.” Four days later, the official came into the cell and told her, “You must read the book -- all of you.” Pointing to the woman, the official said, “Let her teach you all and you must listen to her!” The Christian prisoner reported that she “started to read the Bible for everyone. Many women asked me to give them the Bible, so they could read it personally. … We read the Bible aloud during the day, and some women read it in the night. The cell in which discord, slander, and enmity reigned turned into a quiet place. Women became friendly with each other.” The sister recounted how women were healed from sickness by prayer. and even the prison staff began to request prayer for themselves and their sick relatives. She was released from prison recently, after having served four years and one month of her ten-year sentence. In Isaiah 55:11, God makes a promise about His Word: “My Word that goes out from My mouth; it shall not return to Me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” German voters move right The German elections over the weekend produced one more political shake-up for Europe. The far left gained only four percent, while the right gained 14%, reports the Associated Press. America refused to blame Russia for invasion of Ukraine On Monday, the United States parted with European countries in an important United Nations vote. The United States refused to blame Russia for its invasion of Ukraine in votes on three U.N. resolutions Monday which sought an end to the three-year war. The resolution, which passed 93-18, called for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops and referred to Moscow's aggression as a violation of the United Nations Charter. America voted with Russia and 16 other countries. J.D. Vance affirmed young men at CPAC Last Friday, Vice President J.D. Vance had a word for young men at the Conservative Political Action Conference held in National Harbor, Maryland. VANCE: He told the group that “our culture sends a message to young men that you should suppress every masculine urge.” He also spoke to the cultural zeitgeist. VANCE: “Wants to turn everybody, whether male or female, into androgynous idiots who think the same, talk the same and act the same. We actually think God made male and female for a purpose. We want you guys to thrive as young men and as young women, (applause) and we're going to help with our public policies to make it possible to do that.” Gallup: 9.3% of Americans now identify as homosexual or transgender The prevalence of homosexuality in the United States increased by 22% in just a single year. That's according to a recent Gallup poll, revealing that now 9.3% of Americans identify on the sexually-perverted LGBTQ spectrum. That's also up from 3.5% in 2012. Incredibly, 31% of young Gen Z women, and 12% of Gen Z men identify themselves with some form of sexual perversion that violates the laws of God. Romans 1:25-27 explains how they “worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator. … For this reason, God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise, also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another.” West Virginia might allow religious exemption for vaccines West Virginia's legislature is considering a religious exemption for vaccinations applying to children attending schools in the state. The state senate voted 20-12 to approve the measure on Friday. Only seven states provide for no religious exemption on vaccinations. How God used a one-arm woman to triumph in softball Despite the fact that Katelyn Pavey was born with only one arm, she excelled in women's softball. Conceived by parents involved in a sinful affair who became Christians, they raised her in the church. Remarkably, Katelyn became an all-state player in high school and received a full-ride to Cincinnati Christian University. Her story is told in a new movie entitled “I Can.” MovieGuide, the Christian movie review site, wrote, “'I Can' has a strong Christian, moral worldview stressing God's grace and forgiveness. … Ultimately, ‘I Can' tells an uplifting, inspiring, heartfelt story that champions God's faithfulness to help people overcome problems. The movie has many Christian elements like church and prayer. Circumstances point Katelyn to faith in God when she hits rock bottom. [However], due to some mature themes like death, an affair and injury, MovieGuide advises caution for younger children.” “I Can” can be streamed for free and is available on DVD through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Blue Ghost spacecraft reveals new video of moon And finally, another moon landing with a craft produced by a private company is scheduled for March 2nd. This comes on the heels of last year's Odysseus landing last February. Blue Ghost, also known as one of the Ghost Riders in the Sky, produced by Firefly, is circumnavigating the moon right now, sending back some pretty awesome video of God's creation. Check it out through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. In Psalm 8:3-4, David asked, “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” Close And that's The Worldview on this Tuesday, February 25th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Episode 47 - Murdock and Marvel: 1998 Part 2 Things continued to be grim in the comic world, but it seemed as though the freefall might be over. Marvel had escaped bankruptcy without missing even a single month of publishing, most of the other companies still in business made it through the year (but not all) and some very interesting new players entered the scene. This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story. The Takeaway for 1998 - which is a look back at volume 1 of Daredevil - will be released next week as it's own episode. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #371-380, Marvel Knights: Daredevil #1-2, Uncanny X-Men #351, Thunderbolts #10, Unlimited Access #2, Shadow & Light #1, Cable #55, Ka-Zar #15, Spider-Man Made Men #1, Nighthawk #1-3, Avengers #10-11, and Bring Back the Bad Guys graphic novel. Writing: Joe Kelly (#371-373) Kelly and Jonathan Barron (#374), Kelly and Chris Claremont (#375), Scott Lobdell (#376-379), Dan G. Chichester (#380) Pencils: Ariel Olivetti (#371-372, #374), Richie Acosta (#373), Cary Nord, Olivetti, John Paul Leon, Tom Lyle, Brian Denham and Rick Leonardi (#375), Cully Hamner (#376-379), Lee Weeks (#380) Inks: Pier Brito (#371-372, #374), Bud LaRosa (#373), Mark Lipka, Brito, John Paul Leon, Robert Jones, Chis Carlson and Scott Hanna (#375), Jason Martin (#376-379), Robert Campanella (#380) The year begins with Black Widow and Daredevil discussing their recent run-ins both professionally and personally. Meanwhile Karen goes shopping with Rosalind. Matt and Karen do make up despite Daredevil leaving for a bit Next Mr. Fear pops back up after we learn something weird happened during the prison riot he planned last year. DD tries to talk to the warden, but Ghost Rider beats him to it. Fear and DD play cat and mouse for a couple issues before things come to a head. Meanwhile, we are introduced to Charlie, a likely cop whose working for Fear, who first tries to kill Fogy's sister Candice before going after Karen. In a double sized issue #375, We learn Charlie has been killed and Karen is awaiting trial for his murder. Mr. Fear is trying to manipulate things so that she will go to jail and DD will suffer a breakdown as a result. Matt is Karen's lawyer and while the case slowly slips away from him, he continues to search for Fear as Daredevil hoping it will save his case. We won't spoil the ending, as this is the spotlight story for the week. And just like that, the story quickly shifts to France... In the final named story arc of volume 1, Flying Blind, we meet Laurent Levasseur whom very much seems like our man without fear – though he thinks his just an artist. Turns out Murdock is working deep undercover for SHIELD and had his memory reprogrammed. Murdock is there to stop the sale of agent information to international buyers of the Kingpin. After spending most of the story trying to remember who he is and save the doctor who initially treated him at the start of this tale, Murdock gets his memories back from a mutant named Synapse just as SHIELD locates him and busts in as the cavalry. One side effect of the reprogramming was Murdock was able to actually see. He loses it after getting his memories back but he's able to see his friend Foggy for the first and only time. In November, Volume 1 ends with one last issue – issue #380 – and the return on Dan G Chichester and Lee Weeks for “a tale from Daredevil's past” dedicated to Archie Goodwin. A pretty straight-forward story though told non-sequentially in which the Kingpin tries to frame a Middle Eastern man for terrorism so he can get his hands on a shipment of weapons; Matt defends the patsy and wins in court; Meanwhile DD takes on several of his deadliest foes to foil the Kingpin's scheme. (The Hand/Bushwacker/Bullseye) The final page sees Murdock and his mom Maggie walking and having ice cream with narration “You want to know the truth? The good guys don't always win. But because of who they are, they never stop fighting. There's always a Daredevil willing to take a risk on our behalf. And in a city that never sleeps, we can all rest easy knowing we have that to protect us.” That same month, Volume 2 begins under the Marvel Knight branding begins with a new creative team – Kevin Smith, Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti. In the first 2 books of the Guardian Devil storyline, we learn Karen left Matt and NYC for LA 6 months ago and Matt has been trying to move on with his life. A teenage girl brings a baby to Matt that she claims is the new Messiah and leaves the kid in his care but then Murdock is approached by a mysterious old man claims the same child is the Anti-Christ and a curse to those around it. Phillip Kennedy Johnson is on fire! Not literally of course, but the writer is churning out hit after hit for the major publishers, and his upcoming Hellhunters is no different. Phillip broke onto the scene in 2015 with Last Sons of America and Warlords of Appalachia, both for Boom! Studios. Since then, he's bounced back and forth between Marvel and DC, tackling major characters and properties like Superman, Action Comics, Alien, Green Lantern: War Journal, and more.
