This week it's the episode no one has been waiting for, as the Regular Joes share their thoughts on Kraven: The Hunter the most recent Spider-Man adjacent film from Sony pictures. The film, which underperformed even Morbius (2022) has left some people thinking, maybe Madame Webb (2024) wasn't as bad as we thought. Actually, It was. On the plus side, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who has suited up as both Quicksilver and Kick Ass will likely be back in tights as soon as this film is forgotten. Which could be by the time you hear this episode. There's also the usual Random Topics, and a round of What's in the box. Thanks for listening!
I have a review of a Spider-Man universe Sony movie today. Morbius (2022), much like Kraven the Hunter which followed it, got scathing reviews online. In fact, many review websites had it ranked as low as 15% positive. It seems I am out of step with these websites because, much like the Kraven movie, I liked this one quite well. In fact, I found it quite true to the source material. I do like vampire movies in general and I thought this one was very much good. Let's talk about it. Support When It Was Cool on Patreon - Here
Thank you are for joining us this long! It is our 200th episode, and what better way to celebrate than the most recent 2024 Razzie winner for Worst Picture, "Madame Web". It is the perfect blend of Morbius and the 50 Shades of Grey franchise, as well as the perfect blend of Brandon, Lukas, and Devon. What is the best way to do CPR? How many dogs has Brandon punched in the head? And what is the name of the giant rat from the Star Wars Holiday Special? Tune in this week to find out all that and more, but only on "The Good, The Bad, & The Movies"!P.S. The Superhero Show Show #578Spider-Man the Animated Series: Blade's MomThe Superhero Show Show: “Blade's Mom Rises in The Vampire Queen!”This week on The Superhero Show Show, the hosts sink their teeth into another wild installment of Spider-Man: The Animated Series, breaking down season 4, episode 7, titled “The Vampire Queen.” Things get deeply personal — and deeply vampiric — as Spider-Man teams up once again with Black Cat and Blade to stop a terrifying new threat. But the big twist that rocks the team to its core? The return of Blade's mom...and she's not exactly here for a family reunion.Spider-Man, Black Cat, and Blade Take on a Bloodthirsty Legacy - Blades Mom's IntroductionThe episode kicks off with Spider-Man still reeling from the events of “The Awakening,” and he's not alone. Black Cat is back, focused and fierce, but she's also carrying emotional weight from her recent run-in with Morbius. Just when the team thinks they can regroup, a chilling discovery changes everything: a vampire queen is on the rise — and she's none other than Blade's mom, Miriam. The hosts dig into Blade's complicated emotions when faced with a mother he thought he lost…only to learn she's not just alive, but a powerful vampire working with the Kingpin and Herbert Landon. The show explores the haunting dynamic between mother and son, and the podcasters talk about how the writers of Spider-Man TAS turned what could have been a basic monster-of-the-week into a genuinely emotional arc for Blade. They also talk about how Black Cat's growing maturity and loyalty to the mission show real character development — while Spider-Man tries to keep the team together in spite of increasing tension.A Mother's Bite is Worse Than Her Bark - Blades Mom's BackstoryThe gang on The Superhero Show Show goes deep into the climactic moments at Crime Central, where Blade must decide whether to destroy his mother or try to save what's left of her humanity. The podcasters explore whether this was the moment Blade truly cemented himself as a hero, especially in a show not even titled after him. The conversation turns to Miriam's backstory, her transformation, and how Kingpin's manipulation of her further proves that he's one of the most underrated villains of the '90s animation boom. They also spend time analyzing how Spider-Man's supporting cast continues to elevate the series. Debra Whitman and Dr. Connors play key roles again, showing that even the non-costumed characters have stakes in this unfolding vampire crisis.Final Thoughts: Family Ties and FangsIn the final segment, the hosts reflect on how Spider-Man: The Animated Series continues to hit emotional beats in unexpected ways. “The Vampire Queen” delivers one of the most intense character moments in the series so far, and Blade's mom proves to be more than a shocking twist — she's a tragedy that fuels Blade's ongoing war. With this much pathos, personal conflict, and pulse-pounding action, it's no wonder the team calls this one of the strongest arcs in the series.Links and ResourcesMissed our previous episodes of Spider-Man the Animated Series? This week, we're tearing up the baseboards and getting funky on the saxophone as Gene HackMarch rolls on with a Coppola classic surveillance thriller that he snuck in between Godfathers. It's 1974's The Conversation, written, directed and produced by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Gene Hackman, John Cazale, Harrison Ford, Allen Garfield, Cindy Williams, Frederic Forrest, Teri Garr and Robert Duvall. Needless to say, Hackman is terrific at the heart of an essential 70s paranoid thriller -- though is it really paranoia if you know your fears are true? His Harry Caul is a meticulous professional, a cunning and inventive man who is very good at his work having to reckon with the evil that work may bring in to the world. And can even the best spies really tell good from bad when they only have a piece of the picture? It's a great movie, and a first time watch for both hosts. Plus: J Mo's been to the theatre so we've got a full discussion of Mickey 17, and Hayley's finally captured her great white whale VHS tape. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, The Conversation is currently streaming on Criterion Channel at the time of publication (and can also be found in full for free on YouTube). Other works discussed on this episode include E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, When Harry Met Sally..., MouseHunt, Sneakers, Runaway Jury, Enemy of the State, Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, Morbius, Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Outsiders, Megalopolis, Dog Day Afternoon, Practical Magic, The Lives of Others, and a last minute Corrections Corner on Crimson Tide. We'll be back next week to close out Gene HackMarch with our monthly canon consideration, as this month we induct The Royal Tenenbaums into the hallowed halls of the pod-canon. It is currently streaming on Disney+, Crave, and Starz. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

The Superhero Show Show #573Morbius Returns in The AwakeningThe Superhero Show Show: Morbius The AwakeningWelcome to another thrilling episode of The Superhero Show Show, where we break down the best (and sometimes the weirdest) superhero television has to offer! This week, we're diving deep into Spider-Man: The Animated Series with a discussion on Season 4, Episode 6, titled Partners in Danger, The Awakening. Get ready as we unravel the emotional turmoil of Peter Parker, the return of Morbius, and the tangled web of love and responsibility in Morbius The Awakening!Spider-Man's Emotional Struggles: Love, Guilt, and the Masked DilemmaThe episode kicks off with Spider-Man grappling with his inner turmoil—his heart is still broken over losing Mary Jane, yet he finds himself drawn to Black Cat. The chemistry between these two masked heroes is undeniable, and their playful rooftop chase is a rare moment of joy for Peter Parker. However, reality quickly sets in as he realizes that getting close to someone puts them in danger. This conflict adds another layer to Peter's already complex superhero life, raising the eternal question: Can Spider-Man ever have a normal relationship? The Return of Morbius: A Science Experiment Gone WrongMeanwhile, on a secluded island, Debra Whitman and her team discover the still-hibernating form of Michael Morbius. With the hope of curing him, they transport him back to New York City, only for their noble intentions to be met with widespread panic. Dr. Curt Connors attempts to calm the public, but the fear of Morbius—once a terror to the city—overshadows his scientific aspirations. The tension builds as we see the sinister motivations behind the Herbert Foundation, with Kingpin and Herbert Landon pulling the strings for their own nefarious purposes.Felicia Hardy's Dilemma: Love vs. DutyFelicia Hardy's life takes a dramatic turn when she learns of Morbius's return. Her past feelings for him resurface, sending her on a mission to seek help from Blade's ally, Whistler. As Black Cat, she gears up for the possibility that Morbius may not be the man she once loved, but rather a monster who must be stopped. The emotional weight of this decision is palpable, as Felicia struggles with her conflicting feelings for both Morbius and Spider-Man.Chaos at the Herbert Foundation: Morbius AwakensThe tension reaches its breaking point when Herbert Landon and Shocker launch a full-scale assault on the lab, inadvertently waking Morbius from his hibernation. In the ensuing chaos, Morbius escapes, leaving Spider-Man and Black Cat to pursue him across the city. The action sequences are intense, with rooftop battles, aerial chases, and a final confrontation at the clock tower that tests both Spider-Man's resilience and Black Cat's emotional strength. The Final Showdown: Morbius's FateAs the episode builds to its climax, Spider-Man and Black Cat track Morbius to Landon's secret lab, where Kingpin intends to exploit his vampire DNA for his own dark purposes. The ensuing battle is a spectacle of power, strategy, and raw emotion. Black Cat faces her ultimate test—can she bring herself to end Morbius's suffering? In a heartbreaking moment, she hesitates, allowing Morbius to escape into the night once more. This moment highlights the emotional depth of Morbius The Awakening, proving that superhero stories aren't just about action, but also about the choices that define us.Final Thoughts: The Weight of ResponsibilityIn classic Spider-Man: The Animated Series fashion, the episode ends on a somber note.

Buckle up, we're diving headfirst into A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child & Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, two sequels that feel like they were written by a group of sleep-deprived gremlins on a sugar high, and proved the 90s were straight up lawless.

Hey there all you monsters! My buddy Al Sedano is here with me, and we've got a fantastic horror comic to talk about! It's everybody's favorite wall crawler, Spiderman and this time he has to deal with two monsters! Morbius and Man-Wolf have teamed up to try and take out old web head, and it's going to take some extra effort for Spidey to come out on top! As usual, if you'd like to leave any feedback for the show you can do so to me on Twitter @Billyd_licious or on the show's Facebook page by searching for Magazines and Monsters. You can find Al on social media @adamthanospod and on any podcast app by searching for Resurrections; an Adam Warlock and Thanos podcast. Thanks for listening!

The writer and friend of the pod Adam Jackson returns for a show about what has turned out to be the finale of Sony's "Spider-Man Movies Without Spider-Man In Them Cinematic Universe", Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Russell Crowe. Directed by J.C. Chandor (Margin Call, All Is Lost), Kraven was originally set for release in January 2023 but after guild strikes, reshoots and several schedule changes was finally released at the end of 2024, and on the eve of its debut Sony announced they were wrapping up this attempt to make standalone origin stories of Spider-Man villains like Venom, Morbius and Madame Web, which led to Kraven having the weakest series opening yet. But Adam and I were surprised at how much fun we had watching it, full of good actors delivering ludicrous performances, with the added hilarity of this ”origin story” being a dead-end for the “franchise”. Plus: Adam provides us with a year in review of the comic book movie, which would have been the weakest one in history were it not for the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine, and we talk about what we're looking forward to in 2025. This year we got to add Madame Web, Venom: The Last Dance, and Kraven The Hunter to the Sony Spider-Man spin-off universe. I guess they went all in due to the success of the Venom movies and ignored the Morbius failure. Now that they're all out and apparently finished we decided to take a look at all of them (Or a second look since we covered 2 of these before) and decide which one was the worst!
We compare the film to 845: Ghost Rider and 911: Morbius. 2025 will kick off with a month of Made for TV Movies, starting with The Day After (1983).
Kraven The Hunter, Marvel's most dangerous huntsman, has always been linked with perhaps their most famed hero, Spider-Man. Yet, for his big screen debut, there is a distinct lack of the web-head. Yes, folks, this is another of Sony's moronic attempts to build a shared universe out of the wall crawlers villains. And, like all those that came before it—Madame Web, Morbius, and the trilogy of Venom films—it doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense. The titular predator resembles little the character he's based on. In fact, this movie makes Kraven the Hunter a more benevolent version of the Punisher. He's a straight up hero, leaving one to wonder how this version would ever come to odds with Spider-Man. It should come as no surprise then that this movie flopped and was reviled by critics. Even the most ardent of Kraven supporters didn't ask for this. Now, sit back, track down a Dr. Octoberfest from Next Level Brewing, and look out for the man traps! The Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake are sampling vials of lion's blood to try and gain super powers! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Villains aren't born. They're made. His hunt begins! (0:00) Lingering Questions – If this is the end of Sony's ill-conceived Spider-Man-less Spiderverse, what will our lasting impressions be? It's time for another installment in Sony's Spider-Man(less) Universe film franchise, this time with Kraven the Hunter. Hayley and Brian had a little fun with this primer, reading MARVEL UNLEASHED, where Kraven is somewhat featured, but the Marvel Animals take charge. This 4-issue run is most likely going to be better than the movie, if their past showing of Morbius and Madame Web are precursors. But beware: this read is really emotionally moving... in a good way :)Comics Read:Marvel UNLEASHED (2023): #1 - 4EMAIL: SPARCPODCAST@GMAIL.COMTWITTER: https://twitter.com/SourcePagesCastINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/thesourcepagespodcast/FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/SPARCPODCASTSPaRC's Podcast Buddies:Across the Bifrost: The Mighty Thor - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/across-the-bifrost-the-mighty-thor-podcast/id1572200841Dan and Ian Have Questions - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dan-and-ian-have-questions-podcast/id1587402809Commute: The Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/commute-the-podcast/id1552657624Segabits - https://segabits.com/Machtails From the Cantina - https://www.facebook.com/machtailsfromthecantina/Rebel Force Radio Presents "The Babu Freaks" - https://www.rebelforceradio.com/shows/category/BaJacked Kirby - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jacked-kirby/id1248146026Star Wars YOU-niverse - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/star-wars-you-niverse-podcast/id1704904756
