Author, journalist and television writer Ethlie Ann Vare joins me on the podcast today. We discuss her career writing for TV shows like Earth: Final Conflict, Beastmaster, Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, and more. Ethlie tells us what makes a great story and how TV episodes come together in the writing room. She shares some excellent bits of trivia for Andromeda fans like why Tyr wears chainmail and how the studio pressure affected the show. Also, she tells us what the difference is between a Star Trek hero and a Star Wars hero.
In this special edition of Drive Back the Night, Ryan and Ethan get to chat with writer (and listener of the podcast) Ethlie Ann Vare. She discusses her start in writing for television, shares many insights and experiences about her time working on the Andromeda series and with the episodes and characters she helped develop. Much appreciation to Ethlie for taking the time to talk with us about her work on Andromeda. Enjoy!
Is it possible to be addicted to the idea of being in love? Award winning author and screenwriter, Ethlie Ann Vare is best known for her work on television shows including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda and Silk Stalkings, along with books including Love Addict: Sex, Romance, and Other Dangerous Drugs. She speaks on the topic of sexual compulsions and toxic relationships (including her own) at conferences and on talk shows around the country. "Just because something is addictive doesn't mean that you will get addicted to it. But . . . if your stomach ties up in knots while you count the seconds waiting for a phone call from that special someone . . . if you hear a loud buzzing in your ears when you see a certain person's car (or one just like it) . . . if your eyes burn when you hear a random love song or see a couple holding hands . . . if you suffer the twin agonies of craving for and withdrawing from a series of unrequited crushes or toxic relationships . . . if you always feel like you're clutching at someone's ankle and dragged across the floor as they try to leave the room . . . welcome to the club."

Her popular blog AttentionDeficitDisorder expands on much of what's in Love Addict—namely, her own experiences with sex and love addiction, her recovery from it and information for potential SLA's out there. Have we mentioned that she's also been a rock critic for Billboard, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter as well as an E! TV talking head, not to mention the fact that she's a serious historian? Oh and guess what? You can get answers to your sex and love addiction related questions on that aforementioned blog of hers. In this episode, she and AfterParty's Anna David discuss bottoming out on love addiction, the time she spent in jail for drug dealing, the husband that got her into that and much, much more.
