Terrifier 3Just when you thought this blood soaked bonkers franchise couldn't get more bloodier or brutal. Art the clown comes in with bombs, chainsaws and more batshit mayhem that will delight the sadist within you this festive season.9. GremlinsDo I even need to explain the plot? If you don't know what Gremlins is, go watch it right now then come back and watch the rest of this countdown.8. Better Watch outHome Alone meets Jigsaw Kramer in this wild sleigh ride that will keep you on your toes. So hang the stockings and the paint cans — and don't forget to lock the doors.7. KrampusToni Collette fans rejoice! She is yet in another horror movie and fans of Trick R Treat will feel right at home for the holidays with this twisted tale, which goes to show that there are true terrors in this world that are more frightening than forced family gatherings.6. Jack FrostThis cult classic tells the tale of a serial killer who is transformed into a murderous snowman when his prison transport collides with a genetics truck full of experimental lab acid. Complete with frozen performances, politically incorrect humour and witty one-liners, it's the exact kind of ridiculousness you'd expect from a low-budget '90s holiday horror film. 5. Silent Night, Deadly NightBetween ominous animatronics and irresistibly exaggerated '80s acting, Silent Night, Deadly Night's yuletide kills do not disappoint, featuring a hanging by holiday lights, decapitation via sleigh ride, and impalement by a reindeer (okay, a taxidermied stag, but still).4. Black Christmas (2006)Bring those pitchforks out, I know this is a hugely unpopular opinion but I love love love this movie, it's so bad, it's good plus you all know my main girl Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe is in this so I have to stan my queen.3. Silent NightIn Silent Night, Keira Knightley and Matthew Goode are throwing a killer Christmas party — quite literally.2. Black Christmas (1974)Inspired by the "babysitter and man inside the house" urban legend, Bob Clark's '70s classic takes place in a sorority house over the Christmas break. It's considered one of the earliest examples of a slasher film and led to two remakes, the already mentioned 2006 masterpiece and the absolute shitfest that was released by Blumhouse in 2019.1. Rare Exports: A Christmas TaleThis underseen Finnish horror-action comedy is a unique breed. Walking the line between various genres, the artful and twisted tale explores the mythology of Santa Claus when an archeological dig deep in a frozen mountain unearths what they believe to be the original Santa.#christmas #horror #xmas #krampus #blackchristmas #rareexports #silentnight #terrifier

The Cinema Shock Christmas Spectacular is here, and we're unwrapping the film that changed horror forever: BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974). While the world settles in for wholesome holiday classics, we're exploring the dark, influential "proto-slasher" that walked so Halloween could run. Gary, Justin, and Todd dig into the urban legends that inspired the script, the terrifying vocal techniques used to create "Billy," and the haunting real-life parallels that once got the film pulled from television broadcast. Lock your doors, check the attic, and don't answer the phone.
Two fantastical stories about un-requited love, psychopathic love, revenge, friendship, misogyny, reproductive rights, stalking, stalking again and of course cold-blooded murder. This Christmas we're doing Bob Clark's Black Christmas and Richard Curtis' Love Actually.
"You'll shoot your eye out, kid." For Episode 388, Brandon and David finish off their Christmas Comedy series with one of the most popular Christmas films of all time, A CHRISTMAS STORY. Listen as they discuss Jean Shepherd's writing, what inspired Bob Clark to make the movie, which A-List actor was almost cast in the film, how many child actors they went through to find Ralphie, how the film became a Christmas classic on television, and so much more!

Bundle up, my spookies—this week's This Week in Horror History digs into Christmas horror movies, winter ghost stories, and festive frights from December 15–21. We're hanging the stockings and turning off the lights as we revisit the classics that made the holidays just a little more terrifying. We kick things off with Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein (1974), a black-and-white horror-comedy love letter to the Universal Monsters era. It proved that audiences were happy to unwrap creepy laughs during the holiday season, turning a modest budget into a massive hit and cementing itself as a cozy winter comfort watch for monster kids everywhere. From there, we head into the snow-choked terror of Bob Clark's Black Christmas (1974)—the grim, stalker-in-the-attic slasher that helped invent the blueprint for holiday horror slashers. Killer POV shots, obscene phone calls, sorority sisters in danger, and a cozy Christmas setting turned sinister make it a must-watch Christmas horror movie for anyone who likes their tinsel tangled with blood. We then unwrap some Christmas horror gaming with the PS1-style indie nightmare Christmas Massacre, where retro graphics, a whispering Christmas tree, and a deeply disturbed killer turn nostalgic winter vibes into something nasty and unforgettable. If you're into indie horror games, lo-fi visuals, and brutally mean Christmas horror, this one belongs on your December playlist. For fans of analog horror and late-night weirdness, we shine a frosty spotlight on Local 58's Real Sleep—a fake infomercial that slowly mutates into something cosmic, invasive, and deeply wrong. It's perfect for those long, cold nights where the TV glow is the only light in the room. Our Deep-Cut Spotlight settles on Ghost Story (1981), a wintry ghost tale about regret, buried secrets, and a haunting that refuses to stay in the past. Legendary performances and snow-dusted atmosphere make it an ideal December ghost story to curl up with while the wind howls outside and the Christmas lights flicker.Along the way, we celebrate horror icons with birthdays this week, revisit the seismic impact of Wes Craven's Scream (1996) as a late-December slasher staple, and build you a Christmas horror watchlist loaded with slashers, ghost stories, analog nightmares, and cold-weather horror comfort films.Where to watch this week's picks (U.S.):Black Christmas (1974) – Currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, Shudder, AMC+ and more, and also free with ads on platforms like Tubi and The Roku Channel. Ghost Story (1981) – Streaming on Amazon Prime Video (including Prime with ads), with digital rent/buy options on Amazon, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. Christmas Massacre (Game) – Available digitally on Steam, GOG, PlayStation, Xbox, and directly from the Puppet Combo store for PC collectors. Young Frankenstein (1974) – As of this week it's not on major subscription services in the U.S.; your best bet is grabbing a digital copy or Blu-ray from retailers like Amazon and other disc shops. This week we are joined by a very special guest. Activist, organizer, horror aficionado, friend of the show, and the woman that holds up more than half the sky for one of our hosts, Joy, joins us to talk about the 1974 classic Black Christmas. Written by Roy Moore and directed by Bob Clark, this seminal horror classic starring Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder is widely considered the earliest iteration of the slasher film and contains feminist themes that run counter to many of the films that would follow in its footsteps. We discuss the absolute failure of every man in the film, how police in Canada are apparently as incompetent as the police in the US, and how almost every slasher since Black Christmas has failed to live up to its standard of intelligent characters being failed by others as opposed to being too dumb to live. Pete and Trevor embark on a trip to see 2025's Silent Night, Deadly Night, a remake of the cult horror classic from 1984. On the way, we continue our Project Weird Christmas, with a deeper foray into Christmas horror movies. We look at the Charles Edward Sellier Jr. directed original Silent Night, Deadly Night, as well as Bob Clark's 1974 classic Black Christmas (spoiler one of us thinks this is a masterpiece and the other doesn't even like it). To kick off the latest cycle of "Unorthodox Holiday Suggestions", Emilio brings the original 'Black Christmas', Bob Clark's other holiday themed masterpiece from 1974, to the group just in time for spooky season. Joining the usual three cohosts is James Codoyannis, fellow cinephile and editor for film/TV who worked on the well-received, recently released indie film "We Strangers". The group digs into this proto-slasher classic, highlighting the way this movie is in such great control of its tone and atmosphere, the changing nature of the POV shots, at iconic atonal piano sound design/score, the amazing voice acting work by Nick Mancuso as Billy, and much more. The group also discusses the many ways 'Black Christmas' intersects with and diverges from John Carpenter's 'Halloween', the much more popular and influential slasher film from the 1970s, and discusses the filmmaking decisions that implicate Peter as the killer, and whether or not it works for building suspense. Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972), Deathdream (1974), Black Christmas (1974) Director Bob Clark will probably always be remembered for his now classic holiday film, A Christmas Story (1983), released the same year as his previous film, Porky's, which is one of the raunchiest sex comedies of that era! But he started off making horror films, 3 of them in particular, before he moved on to making films in just about every other sub-genre. As you can imagine, it is these 3 horror films that we are going to discuss on this episode. One of them set many of the standards of what would be known as a slasher film, while the others have two very different take on zombies. All made on low to moderate budgets, but still are still so well made, it's a shame that Clark didn't continue on in the horror genre. Maybe that's why he's not remembered as much as names like Carpenter, Cronenberg, or Craven. And that's why we're discussing it now!
