Dan has been involved in many aspects of the entertainment industry with a focus on the 'sci-fi' and fantasy genres. He is a recognized expert on fan relations and the world of fandom. In 1979, at 18 years old, he founded The Official Star Trek Fan Club with Paramount Pictures and friend, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. He oversaw all aspects of his fan club, including the publishing and merchandising, business development, contract negotiations, and marketing.  Over the course of the next twenty years, Madsen's company handled several other fan clubs, official magazines and merchandising empires. In 1987, George Lucas asked him to take over the Official Star Wars Fan Club for Lucasfilm and all its entities of which Madsen ran for almost 20 years before selling his company to Hasbro subsidiary, Wizards of the Coast. Movie reviews number sixty. Seven films to review today so let's get goin.
1. (Deadhead Miles1972)
Terrence Malick is the writer here and this is an early work of his. Alan Arkin is here in the starring role along with support from the butler from the Jeffersons, Doc Hopper from the Muppet movie, and Jaws from the Bond movies. The film cinematically answers the burning question, “Did they ever make a more ethereal stream of of consciousness Trucker movie?”
2. (The Execution of private Slovik 1974) This is a heavy made for tv based on the real story of Eddie getting executed for desertion 1945 by firing squad. 49 others were sentenced to death for desertion in that war but all were commuted except for Slovik, apparently to send a message, but then they covered it up. Martin Sheen, Mariclare Costello, and about a baker's dozen of recognizable characters from the time appear in this one. What else to say except maybe strap in fam.
3. (My Father's house 1975)
Spiderman's Uncle, the rad guy from the Music Man, Mrs Peacock from Clue, and Rosemary Forsyth star in this thoughtful made for tv movie about a dad recovering from a heart attack who is thinking about life and his dad.
4. (The Grateful Dead Movie 1977) I think I liked this more than the others here. We all don't dig the Grateful Dead much but Agree that the story is very interesting. It could have been more coherent but as Jerry himself said “We just keep trying to describe the Indescribable.”
5. (Spectre 1977) Here we have another Gene Roddenberry tv movie starring Robert Culp and Gig Young. The lil promo film we saw about this says that it's trying to cash in on the Exorcist dollar, but this is waaaaaaay more bizarre, is it good though?
6. (Players 1979) Got a bootleg of this and for a 70's movie completionist, it is fun for me to see Ali MacGraw, Maximilan Schell, Steve Guttenberg, and Melissa Prophet in this rather bad massive flop of a movie about Tennis, kinda.
7. (Sunburn 1979) The Plastic Surgeon's assistant from Logan's Run, The guy who made the worst writing studio for Carol Burnett in their garage in The grass is always greener over the Septic tank, the guy who gives grandpa Wookie space porn in the Star Wars holiday special, Edith Keeler from Star Trek, the Boss of Magnum P.I., and the Baroness from the Sound of Music, are all here in this, so it's just got to be the best thing ever, we'll see. Show notes provided by Joe No TV show hits the small screen (Can we still say that?) fullyformed. Ideas, concepts, scripts need to be generated, and eventually come together in a "pilot" episode. The networks and advertisers need multiple reasons to put it on the air. TV is a business, and who is going to green light a program that doesn't make money? So the pilot has got to get it right the first time. Right? Well, maybe not. Since the medium took root back in the late 1940's, many initial pilots did not hit with "the suits'. And more often than not these projects died on the vine--never to be seen again. On to the next offering. One can picture studio execs walking out of the screening room harrumphingtheir way to another liquid lunch.    Is that what happened on the Desilu lot on January 22nd,1965 when Gene Roddenberry's sci-fi opus--"The Cage" was dismissed as too cerebral? In an alternate reality (a staple of science fiction) there is a world where Star Trek died that day, never making it to TV screens across the world. Never going "where no man has gone before"! Bummer! But someone saw something with this "strange new world" story,and another pilot was ordered. Not unprecedented, but still rare for the time.   Beam aboard the bridge of the NCC-1701 with James, Josh, John, and Commodore Joe as they explore the trappings, decisions, and pitfalls, and ultimately  the triumphs of "The Cage", and "Where No Man Has Gone Before" the two TV pilots that begat the sci-fi classic--STAR TREK! Like the vast Alpha Quadrant that looms before the Enterprise, the guys navigate their way through the "trials and tribulations" Roddenberry and his staff had to endure to get their vision of a hopeful, exciting, exploratory future onto the small screens of the 1960's. And as you will see, it was no small task.   So sit back in your center seat with your beverage of choice (I'deschew the Romulan Ale. Gene Roddenberry's name is synonymous with Star Trek, but he relied on a team to bring his vision to life. Most of his writers were men with one exception, the trailblazing Dorothy Fontana. Professionally, she went by D.C. Fontana to counter the belief that women couldn't write genres like war, Westerns or sci-fi. Fontana became story editor and wrote some of the most beloved episodes of The Original Series, became the de facto showrunner on The Animated Series, and helped launch The Next Generation. She excelled at building character relationships and alien species – especially Vulcans – and worked closely with Leonard Nimoy to develop Spock. We've dug into the podcast vault for the story of Star Trek's furniture.  Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek launched a franchise in 1966 and is still going strong 60 years later. Sequels, movies, toys, fan films - there's just no end to Star Trek's bright, progressive, optimistic future where Earth has transcended national and international politics. Something architecture fans may have missed, and we certainly did, is that Star Trek adapted midcentury Modern furniture for the set design, from the Bridge to the Conference Room, to the alien buildings on the planets they landed on.  Authors Dan Chavkin and Brian McGuire about talk their book: Star Trek: Designing the Final Frontier, The Untold Story of How Midcentury Modern Decor Shaped Our View of the Future. The august assemblage consists of Admirals James, Josh, John and Keith, and Commodores Jack and Joe. Tasked with the responsibility of dissecting, disseminating, and declassifying (If deemed suitable for public consumption) the information accumulated, the tribunal will rule on the merits, and missteps of the mission. Sounds quite serious? Right? Wrong. These are the trekkie nerds you all know and love pontificating about a Trekfilm that very well may have saved the franchise. And as usual they have a grand time getting their points across about Admiral Kirk and his crafty crew.    Remembrances of where and when each of the crew was when they first saw the film is discussed in detail. Also, James poses the question to each member: Name your top three Star Trek films? Denise first read for Deanna Troi before Gene Roddenberry made a pivotal switch, reshaping the role of Macha Hernandez into Tasha Yar to fit Denise's strengths. In this week's episode, Denise reflects on the audition process, her favorite scene between Troi and Yar that was never filmed, and what those early creative decisions revealed about the direction of TNG.
