This week, The Times of Israel is taking you under Jerusalem’s Old City where we’re joining Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologist Dr. Barak Monnickendam-Givon in a subterranean dig, about 7 meters or so underground. We’re in a huge, excavated chamber that was once filled with dirt and debris. At a glance you can take in different periods of Jerusalem history, starting way down with a unique find from 2,000 years ago, until a British Mandate water system from just a few decades ago. It’s frankly jaw dropping. Israel's annual observance of Jerusalem Day was a little different this year under COVID-19 social distancing restrictions. So The Times of Israel Podcast decided to mark the national holiday from afar with an in-depth conversation with ToI New Media editor Sarah Tuttle-Singer. Tuttle-Singer lived in all four quarters of the ancient city for over two years, after which she wrote her experiential memoir, "Jerusalem Drawn and Quartered." In a lively conversation with podcast host Amanda Borschel-Dan, Tuttle-Singer servers as a behind-the-scenes guide to the alley ways and rooftops of the Old City. We hear about the best place in the world to purchase take-out humus, and upon which rooftop to eat it. Image: Sarah Tuttle-Singer outside Jerusalem's Old City's Jaffa Gate. (courtesy)
