Episode Summary: When you are crushed and broken hearted, where do you go to find hope? Jesus said that in this life we will have pain, heartbreak, and trials. So how do we deal with our pain? What does it look like to walk with God in our grief. Our guest today has experienced her share of pain including a traumatic brain injury as well as cancer diagnoses for two of her daughters. In her suffering, Linda boldly asked God tough questions like How do I keep going? God, where are you? And How do I keep trusting. In honor of Grief Awareness Day, today we’re going to be talking about Daring to Hope When Your Heart Is Shattered: Trusting God Through Pain and Loss. Quotables from the episode: I'm going to dare to hope anyway. I am going to dare to hope. God, I can't give up. I have to keep trusting you. I will not give up. I will not give up. I will not give up. Hope does not come from a change in your circumstances, but from a change in your thinking. I had to look up, I had to look at him, and I had to say ‘I won't give up.’ You are my hope, God, and my hope will be in you. If I got on my knees and opened my hands and surrendered to him, I got my perspective right because my eyes were lifted up to him. The greatest way to pour hope into your hurting heart is to sink deep into the love of God. Because being with you, my beloved, is the most important thing in my life. Peace can't be in our circumstances. It has to be in him. Scripture References: Lamentations 3:21-24 “Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my inheritance;’ therefore, I will hope in him!” Habakkuk 2:4 “The just shall live by faith.” Romans 15:13 “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Recommended Resources: Hope for My Hurting Heart: 8 Heart Skills to Help You Cling to God and Not Give Up by Linda Dillow Calm My Anxious Heart by Linda Dillow Free Stress-Response Personality Assessment Sacred Scars: Resting in God’s Promise That Your Past Is Not Wasted by Dr. Michelle Bengtson The Hem of His Garment: Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner AWSA 2024 Golden Scroll Christian Living Book of the Year and the 2024 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in the Christian Living and Non-Fiction categories YouVersion 5-Day Devotional Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises from God to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, AWSA Member of the Year, winner of the AWSA 2023 Inspirational Gift Book of the Year Award, the 2024 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in the Devotional category, the 2023 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in four categories, and the Christian Literary Awards Henri Award for Devotionals YouVersion Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day version 1 YouVersion Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day version 2 Revive & Thrive Women’s Online Conference Revive & Thrive Summit 2 Trusting God through Cancer Summit 1 Trusting God through Cancer Summit 2 Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the AWSA 2020 Best Christian Living Book First Place, the first place winner for the Best Christian Living Book, the 2020 Carolina Christian Writer’s Conference Contest winner for nonfiction, and winner of the 2021 Christian Literary Award’s Reader’s Choice Award in all four categories for which it was nominated (Non-Fiction Victorious Living, Christian Living Day By Day, Inspirational Breaking Free and Testimonial Justified by Grace categories.) Rae Irelan was home alone, leg in a cast, a two-year-old running around, and a mattress on the living room floor because she couldn't climb stairs. Then the landlord called. Sixty days to move out. Most people would have collapsed. Rae and her husband Sammy sold almost everything they owned, hit the road, and used the chaos to finally go all-in on what they had been studying for months: using AI to take back the hours that were quietly draining founders dry. In this episode, Rae shares the real breaking point behind her shift, how she and Sammy built a system to audit where time actually goes (the numbers shock every single client), and what it looked like when the systems started working while they were homeschooling their son on a beach in Puerto Rico. She also shares the story of a trucking family with seven kids who got 40 hours a month back each, launched a new six-figure revenue stream, and then opened their home to foster kids. This is what happens when your business stops running you.

In episode 345, a couple is facing the enormous aftermath of pornography addiction, sexual betrayal, deception, failed disclosure, and trickle truth. The husband reports that he is now 18 months sober, has become rigorously honest and transparent, participates in therapy and 12-step recovery, and is working to sit with his wife's pain without defensiveness. Yet his wife's trauma remains intense. She has maintained a boundary of no physical contact for approximately 18 months, frequently expresses disgust and anger toward him, and periodically insists that she wants a divorce while demanding that he be the one to file. The critical reality is that his recovery does not erase the impact of his past choices. Sobriety, honesty, and improved behavior matter tremendously, but they cannot dictate the pace of her healing or guarantee that she will ultimately want reconciliation. At the same time, understanding the source of a betrayed partner's anger does not mean that every form of communication should continue indefinitely. If the marriage is going to have a genuine chance, patterns of contempt, humiliation, name-calling, aggression, defensiveness, and retaliation must progressively give way to healthier communication and individual accountability. The husband must continue owning the tremendous harm he caused while recognizing that his job is to create the best possible environment for his wife's healing—not to control or perform that healing for her. Likewise, although she did not cause the betrayal or deserve its consequences, she is ultimately the only person who can pursue her own healing, recover her voice and agency, and determine what she authentically wants. Both partners need to move away from “I did this because you did that” and toward taking responsibility for how each chooses to show up now.The deeper question is therefore not simply whether he should file for divorce because she tells him to. He can authentically say that he does not want a divorce, respects her right to choose one, and still wants to give the marriage an opportunity to heal. But neither partner should remain indefinitely trapped in a painful holding pattern. With professional support, they need to identify what reconciliation would actually require, what each person's deepest wants and needs are, whether those needs are compatible, and whether both genuinely want to undertake the work necessary to build a fundamentally different relationship. If both choose reconciliation, the long-term goal must be a return to true partnership rather than a permanent dynamic of offender and victim, guilty spouse and judge. If one or both ultimately determine that reconciliation is no longer possible, healing must continue individually so that both can move toward lives of greater honesty, wholeness, safety, and peace. For a full transcript of this podcast in article format, go to:   My Addiction Shattered My Wife; She Wants a Divorce, but I Don't. In the late summer of 1933, with the Great Depression holding Chicago in a frozen grip, twenty-two-year-old Jacob Rubenstein and his sister Eva packed a single suitcase and looked west. Under the sun-drenched palm trees of California, a strange transformation occurred. The volatile, quick-tempered kid from the West Side tenements seemed to vanish, replaced by a well-mannered, meticulously dressed young gentleman who openly admired local beat cops and managed newspaper subscription crews. Yet, the street-hustler DNA remained active underneath his polished veneer as he ran lucrative racetrack tip sheets from Santa Anita to Bay Meadows. But this fragile West Coast peace was shattered in 1937 when his mother, Fanny, suffered a complete psychiatric collapse. Returning to the familiar grime and chaos of his family's Chicago home, the polished gentleman dissolved. Jacob immediately plunged back into the raw, competitive arena of the streets—scalping tickets, selling cheap watches out of his pockets, and violently beating a man to the pavement who hurled an anti-Semitic slur at him.Desperate for a real position of authority and respect, Jacob found his calling in late 1937 as an organizer for the Scrap Iron and Junk Handlers Union. It was here that he met the ultimate mentor who would redefine his life: Leon Cook, the union's brilliant, idealistic, college-educated attorney. Jacob idolized Cook, pouring his manic energy into the union while frequently serving as its blunt instrument and "muscle" to keep hostile employers and wildcat strikes in line. Then came the cold night of December 8, 1939, when a bitter power struggle ended in gunfire. Mob-aligned union president John Martin shot Leon Cook at point-blank range, a lethal blow that eventually claimed Cook's life and allowed the Chicago syndicate to seize control. Shattered and violently frozen out by the mob, twenty-eight-year-old Jacob made a profound, deeply emotional choice to preserve his mentor's memory: he legally adopted Cook's first name as his own middle name. From that moment on, he was Jacob Leon Rubenstein—and later, Jack Leon Ruby. Every time he signed a document, introduced himself to a Dallas police officer, or handed out a strip club business card, he carried the name of a murdered man and the heavy shadow of his violent past.

On today's show, we're reviewing a new book by Andrew Ross Sorkin called 1929: Inside the Greatest Crash in Wall Street History, and How It Shattered a Nation.Sorkin is best known for Too Big to Fail, his account of the 2008 financial crisis. In this book, he goes back nearly eighty years earlier to examine the most famous market collapse in American history. Most people know the basic outline. The stock market rose dramatically during the Roaring Twenties. Speculation took hold. The market crashed in October of 1929, and the Great Depression followed. But knowing the outline is not the same as understanding what happened.Sorkin's strength is narrative. He takes a complicated financial event and tells it through the people who experienced it. Bankers, traders, politicians, regulators, journalists, and ordinary investors appear not as distant historical figures, but as human beings operating under pressure. The book's central lesson is not simply that markets can fall. Everyone already knows that. The deeper lesson is that intelligent, experienced people can see warning signs and still fail to act. Why?Because the incentives of the moment are often stronger than the consequences of the future.-------**Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1)   iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613)   Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com)   LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce)   YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734)   Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso)   Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com)  **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com)   Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital)   Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)

What happens when trauma doesn't just wound your heart—but your experience of God? In this deeply thoughtful conversation, Dan Allender and Rachael Clinton Chen welcome therapist and author Colleen Ramser to discuss her remarkable new book, The Shattered Soul: Restoring Wholeness and Rebuilding Your Faith After Spiritual Trauma.  Rather than offering another conversation about "church hurt," Colleen invites us to consider something far more profound: spiritual trauma doesn't simply change what we believe. It changes how our bodies experience faith. Through her vision of the "somatic soul," she explores how trauma fragments us, leaving many people feeling disconnected from the God they once knew. Prayer can become frightening. Worship can feel empty. The very practices that once brought life can begin to feel unsafe, not because faith has disappeared, but because trauma has reshaped our relationship to it. Together, they explore why the question isn't whether you've deconstructed your faith. Trauma has already done that work of fragmentation. The invitation is toward reconstruction: patiently tending to the wounds that separate us from ourselves, from others, and from God. Along the way, they discuss the posture beneath spiritual abuse, the role of lament, and why healing begins by caring for the wound rather than debating whether it was "bad enough" to count. This is one of the richest conversations we've had on spiritual abuse and religious trauma, offering language, hope, and a deeply embodied vision of healing for anyone seeking to rebuild trust after their faith has been shattered. About the Allender Center Podcast: For over a decade, the Allender Center Podcast has offered honest, thoughtful conversations about the deep work of healing and transformation. Now may the God of peace, who . . . brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus . . . work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ. . . . — Hebrews 13:20-21 It has been a blessing to be a beekeeper. My hope is that— in the process—plants, creatures, and other parts of God's creation have benefited. In any healthy relationship, blessings flow both ways. Being a beekeeper, I know that I have received more than I have given. I have learned about and been inspired by the bees' life in community, recognizing and honoring all members, working and serving together, communicating well, and much more. In addition, I've been able to enjoy and share the sweet honey made by bees, and to give thanks for the health benefits it brings. The blessing from Hebrews 13:20-21 reflects well the flow of God's blessings to us and through us. “Peace” refers to the biblical teaching of shalom— physical and spiritual well-being in a flourishing, nurturing environment with God and his people. Shattered by our waywardness, we desperately need to be shepherded into shalom. Our great shepherd's rescue, nurture, protection, and guidance are all necessary for our restored thriving and well-being.While honeybees may do reasonably well without a beekeeper, human beings do not do well without a shepherd. People wreck and ruin God's creation and one another. Only Jesus fills the role of “great shepherd,” coming to rescue us and to “work in us what is pleasing to him.” What a beautiful blessing! Are you experiencing and sharing it? Lord of shalom, equip us and work in us through Jesus to bring blessing into your world and bring glory to you. Amen.

Nick Lloyd continues: by late 1915, commanders on both sides realized that the trench deadlock could not be easily shattered through traditional maneuvers. During the Second Battle of Champagne, the French and Germans engaged in a constant evolution of defensive and offensive technology, with the Germans thickening their lines with pillboxes, machine guns, and barbed wire in response to massive Allied artillery barrages. Lloyd emphasizes that the war's complexity forced a logical but painful shift in thinking as the dream of a grand "shattering breakthrough" faded into a grim reality of local gains. Amidst this carnage, figures like General Castelnau emerged, representing the human side of high command; a deeply religious man who personally suffered the loss of three sons, he serves as a counterpoint to the cliché of "cardboard cutout" generals. This narrative seeks to bring these individuals to life, showing them as humans wrestling with the desolation and horror of a war they could not easily win. (2)VON FALKHEYN

(2)MONASH

Send us Fan MailJoin Professor Jeffrey Sachs and historian Sam Dalrymple for a fascinating discussion of his book Shattered Lands: Five Partitions and the Making of Modern Asia. Drawing on extensive archival research, personal histories, and overlooked narratives, Dalrymple reveals how the dissolution of the British Raj reshaped a vast region stretching from Yemen and the Gulf to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, giving rise to many of the political fault lines that continue to define the modern world.Together, they explore the five partitions that fractured the British Indian Empire, including the division of India and Pakistan, the creation of Bangladesh, the contested futures of Hyderabad and Kashmir, and the often-forgotten connections between South Asia and the Gulf. They examine the human consequences of partition, from mass displacement and divided families to enduring conflicts, militarized borders, and unresolved questions of identity and sovereignty. The conversation also highlights the immense cultural, linguistic, and religious diversity of the region and considers how the legacies of empire continue to shape contemporary geopolitics. This episode offers listeners a powerful rethinking of modern Asian history, challenging conventional narratives and illuminating the imperial roots of many of today's most pressing global challenges. It is a story of migration, memory, conflict, and resilience, one that underscores how understanding the past is essential for imagining a more peaceful and interconnected future. The Book Club with Jeffrey Sachs is brought to you by the SDG Academy, the flagship education initiative of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. We have covered volume a handful of times on the podcast — ETP#167 (Personalizing Your Training Volume), ETP#188 (Quality Volume), and most recently ETP#207 (The Training Volume Model). This one comes at it from a different angle: not "what's the right number of sets," but how that number can change over a training career as skill as a lifter improves. The whole thing started with Aaron's quads. They used to be the body part he was almost ashamed of, and now they're on par with everything else. Except he only trains them once a week, six sets, and they're in shambles for five or six days afterward. That low a dose creating that much stimulus had Aaron questioning a lot of things, mainly: what actually makes a lagging body part lag? Is it genetics, or is it that you just haven't figured out how to contract the muscle well enough yet? Aaron's honest belief is leaning hard toward the second one.So we get into the precision side of volume. Why a row isn't always a 1.0 stimulus, why your weak points might not need more sets so much as better execution, how strength curves explain why back and delts get buried under volume while quads light up off almost nothing, and how to actually manipulate all of this with rep ranges and resistance profiles. Plus some personal updates up top, including one of Aaron's that went unexpectedly viral.Covered in this episode:Why volume needs can drop as your precision and skill improve, and the asterisk on "more volume is better until it isn't"Aaron's theory that lagging body parts lag because you haven't learned to contract them well — not because of geneticsThe Kyle Baxter pronation/foot-pressure cue that finally unlocked Aaron's quadsWhy quads hold post-workout stimulus for days when nothing else does (blood flow, lengthened overload, and the fact that we walk on our legs)Strength curve vs resistance curve, and why short-overloaded muscles like delts and back need more volume to reach the same inroadsThe leaning lateral raise trick — disadvantaging your own bad habit to force a better stimulusUsing the 15/10/5 rep scheme to go short on the high-rep sets and lengthened on the low-rep setsPrioritization: deprioritize what's already good and pour the days into what you actually want to bring upHamstrings/biceps vs quads/triceps, the cramp problem, and why some muscles just don't follow the same rulesTimestamps: 00:00 Intro: How Much Is Enough? + The Prior Volume Episodes 01:00 Bryan's Update: 15/10/5 and Why Full Body Is "For the Birds" 03:00 Aaron's Personal Update + The Post That Went Viral 05:00 The 1989 LA Raiders Mug 06:00 The Real Topic: Volume Dose Response Per Muscle Group 07:00 Can Precision Change Your Volume Needs? 08:00 Aaron's Quads: From Lagging to Wrecked on Six Sets 09:00 What Actually Makes a Lagging Body Part? 10:00 Lengthened Overload and Leaning Into the Stretch 12:00 Squat Variables: Stance, Knee Tracking, Foot Pressure 13:00 The Kyle Baxter Pronation Cue 15:00 Aaron's Current Quad Setup (Leg Extension + Squat Pattern) 17:00 Six Sets, Shattered for Days + Repeated Bout Effect 21:00 The Post-Workout Stimulus Window: Quads vs Everything Else 22:00 Double the Chest Volume, Lower the Stimulus 23:00 The "Washing Your Hair" Delt Test 24:00 Splitting Volume vs One Big Day 25:00 Aaron's Theory: Lagging = Not Contracting Well Yet 27:00 The Leaning Lateral Raise (Disadvantaging the Shrug) 29:00 Strength Curve vs Resistance Curve 30:00 Why Beginners Can't Feel Their Legs 31:00 Blood Flow, Bro Splits, and Dispersed Stimulus 33:00 Prioritizing: Deprioritize What's Already Good 34:00 Building a Program Around Your Weak Points 35:00 Aaron's Back Days: High Volume, Still Can't Feel It 37:00 Why Back and Delts Need More Volume 38:00 Manipulating Resistance Profiles Across a Whole Day 39:00 The 15/10/5: Short on the Highs, Lengthened on the Lows 41:00 The Asterisk on "More Volume Is Better" 42:00 A Row Isn't Always a 1.0 Stimulus 43:00 Finding the Rep Range Before Weight Takes Over 44:00 Pausing in the Short Position to Build the Pattern 47:00 Hamstrings, Biceps, and the Cramp Problem 49:00 Biceps Femoris: Pullers vs Pushers 50:00 Why Quads Are Just Different Post-Workout 52:00 Closing: Training Maturity and Looking Inward Work 1:1 with Aaron ⬇️https://strakernutritionco.com/nutrition-coaching-apply-now/Done For You Client Check-In System for Coaches ⬇️https://strakernutritionco.com/macronutrient-reporting-check-in-template/Paragon Training Methods Programming ⬇️https://paragontrainingmethods.comFollow Bryan's Evolved Training Systems Programming ⬇️https://evolvedtrainingsystems.comFind Us on Social Media  ⬇️IG | @Eat.Train.ProsperIG | @bryanboorsteinIG | @aaron_strakerYT | EAT TRAIN PROSPER PODCAST
