From July 15, 2020: We talk a lot about Chinese policy in Hong Kong, but there's another human rights crisis going on in China in the province of Xinjiang. It concerns the Turkic minority known as the Uighurs whom the Chinese government has been rounding up and putting in reeducation camps. It is an ugly story—one that the Chinese government has gone to great lengths to keep from international attention, with some degree of success. To walk us through the situation in Xinjiang, Benjamin Wittes spoke with Jessica Batke, a senior editor at ChinaFile; Darren Byler, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Colorado at Boulder whose research focuses on Uighur dispossession; and Maya Wang, a senior China researcher for Human Rights Watch, who has written extensively on the use of biometrics, artificial intelligence and big data in mass surveillance in China.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. The Uyghur people are a mostly Muslim ethnic group across central and eastern Asia, and many millions also live in China. The presence of the Chinese government's "re-education" camps for its Uyghur citizens have now come to light. But it's clear these are more like concentration camps made to detain up to 1 million Uyghur men and even brainwash or abuse them. Jessica Batke is an expert on China’s domestic political and social affairs. Omer Kanat is Director of the Uyghur Human Rights Project. They both join us for an update about the dire situation of Uyghur Muslims in China, particularly regarding these dangerous camps. In the second half, we speak with Imam Abdul Malik Mujahid about the implications of the Rohingya Genocide. The world largely watched this tragedy unfold without taking any meaningful action. Do the techniques used by the Burmese military now risk being mimicked in other countries? https://www.burmataskforce.org/ Guest: Omer Kanat Guest: Jessica Batke Host/Producer: Tariq I. May 11, 2018 When China’s law on non-governmental organizations went into effect in early 2017, observers worried that many international NGOs would pull out as a result. Almost 18 months on, the picture is mixed as Jessica Batke of ChinaFile has found out. As part of ChinaFile’s NGO Project, she tracks the experiences with the new law and says some 350 groups have managed to register with the authorities. None is known to have pulled out so far. Yet, this could change in 2018. Small NGOs find it particularly difficult to comply with the new regulations, and some groups face more difficulties then others. MERICS Director of Communications Claudia Wessling talks to Jessica Batke in the new MERICS Experts Podcast. You can finde the China NGO Project under http://www.chinafile.com/ngo.
