Economic theory teaches that people make choices that provide them with the greatest benefit. So why not extend this idea to the realm of charity? Economists and social entrepreneurs Michael Faye and Paul Niehaus of GiveDirectly argue that giving people cash with no strings attached is the most cost-effective means of helping the poorest people in the world and their communities.

Aimee Mann has a brilliant new album out called Queens of the Summer Hotel with songs about mental illness and identity, all inspired by the book Girl, Interrupted. The album is new but the songs are not, mostly written and recorded before Aimee had a career-threatening health scare. About a year ago, she lost part of her hearing, leaving her unable to pick up on certain frequencies. What had been music before became what she describes as a fuzzy, distorted electronic sound. This presented a significant problem for Aimee as a musician and songwriter. It was like having broken instruments and gear but much more significant because you can't just swap out your own head at a music store. Eventually, Aimee found that the problem was coming from her brain in the form of stress and trauma. With that knowledge, she set about addressing those issues and began to make progress. She says she's about 80% recovered.Turns out sometimes it helpful to not think of “mental health” as something separate from “physical health”. There's just health.Get your copy of Queens of the Summer Hotel wherever albums are sold. Today on TruNews, less than a week after the new omicron variant of the coronavirus was reported to the World Health Organization, global leaders on Wednesday agreed to start negotiations to create an international agreement to prevent and deal with future pandemics — which some have dubbed a “pandemic treaty.” The special session of the World Health Assembly, only the second ever held by the WHO's governing body, pledged by consensus to begin work on an agreement, amid a round of applause, after three days of talks. Rick Wiles has only been talking about this for nearly twenty years, and will have his commentary on this latest advance in the Global Health World Order. Rick Wiles, Doc Burkhart. Airdate 12/3/21.
What does Germany's new coalition treaty tell us about how the incoming government under Chancellor Olaf Scholz will approach security and defense policy? Christian Mölling is the research director at the German Council on Foreign Relations, where he also heads the Security and Defense Program. Claudia Major is the Head of the International Security Division at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs in Berlin. Her work focuses on security and defense policy in Europe and in a transatlantic context.

The African Union's mission (AMISOM) has operated in Somalia for close to fifteen years. Initial military successes have led to a stalemate on the battlefield, as the military coalition of regional African troops has struggled to permanently dislodge jihadist insurgent group Al-Shabaab. Frustration is mounting, both in Somalia and abroad. The Somali government, led by Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed “Farmajo”, has consistently called for an accelerated transition. International actors, saddled with the bulk of costs, are growing ever more wary of funding the mission without a clearer exit plan. Still, there are no easy options. Immediate withdrawal would almost certainly see Al-Shabaab make significant gains. This week, Alan is joined by Crisis Group's Senior Analyst for Somalia Omar Mahmood to discuss the beleaguered mission and the pressing need for reform. They talk through AMISOM's mixed record, the possible consequences of a sudden withdrawal, the central and complicated roles played by Ethiopia and Kenya, Somali attitudes toward the mission and the bitter international disputes surrounding AMISOM'S funding. They also talk about the wider challenges facing Somalia and the missing political pieces preventing a smoother pullout by the African Union troops. For more information, explore Crisis Group's analysis on our Somalia page. States have begun the process of drawing up new local and congressional districts. With almost a year until November 2022, parties in control have begun the process of redistricting, but critics say it's actually “gerrymandering” -- drawing districts that will put them in advantageous positions come election day next year. Managing Editor of Sabato's Crystal Ball at UVA Center for Politics, Kyle Kondik explains how parties have been redrawing districts maps to improve their position ahead of the midterms, the history behind districting rules, how partisan gerrymandering can be executed legally, and why Republicans seem likely to take control of the House in 2022 given their geographical and redistricting advantages. The Iran nuclear deal talks are back on. President Biden's administration is trying to rejoin the agreement that former President Trump called 'horrible' and pulled out of in 2018. Dr. Jim Walsh, Senior Research Associate at MIT's Security Studies Program, discusses why believes the nuclear deal is on "life support," how close he thinks Iran is to building nuclear bombs and whether military action would stop their weapons program. Plus, commentary by former New York Times reporter and author Alex Berenson.
A glamorous international television and movie star fluent in four languages, the actress and model Leonor Varela has enjoyed a career spanning decades working with the likes of Leonardo Di Caprio, Patrick Dempsey, Ashton Kutcher, Wesley Snipes, Timothy Dalton, Quentin Tarantino and Guillermo Del Toro. Perhaps it was being born in Chile during the brutal regime of ruthless dictator Augusto Pinochet and having to flee the country with her family as just a girl that helped her instinctively turn down infamous Hollywood sexual predator Harvey Weinstein's offer to audition for a movie role in his hotel room. Leonor and Vivica discuss the aftermath of that fateful decision, her becoming an influential activist working tirelessly to end whale hunting and to save our environment and suffering every parent's nightmare in losing her beloved son Matteo to leukodystrophy at the age of 5. To help other parents struggling with loss, she wrote a powerful book about her experiences called Go to Heaven and Back: My Way with Matteo. Leonor believes we are never truly separated from the ones we love, and she's here with Vivica to share her secret to a long, successful career and deep and lasting relationships with our loved ones. https://www.instagram.com/la_leovarela/ https://twitter.com/leonorvarela https://www.facebook.com/iam.leonor https://www.vivicafox.com/ https://www.instagram.com/msvfox/ https://www.facebook.com/VivicaAFox https://twitter.com/msvivicafox http://stage29.tv/ https://www.instagram.com/stage29podcasts https://twitter.com/stage29podcasts https://www.facebook.com/Stage29Podcasts Learn more about your ad choices. Imagine you hear a note—any note—from a ding in an elevator to the whistle of a bird, and somehow, without even having to thing about it, you just know what note it is. F-sharp. B-flat. Middle C. It's just there, as easy as it would be for the rest of us to recognize a color. This phenomenon is a gift shared by very few people on the earth, and one of them is Katy's nephew Evan. He didn't have to study. He didn't have to train his ear. He didn't acquire this ability after years of piano lessons. It was always with him. On this mini-episode, Katy talks with both Evan and his mom Dana (Katy's sister) about what it is like to live with this incredible gift. Listen to the end to hear one of Evan's own compositions. ------------------------------------- ADVERTISE WITH US: Reach expats, future expats, and travelers all over the world. Episode Summary: International fundraising has its own challenges—not the least of which is getting people “here” to care about “there.” In today's episode, we speak with the Founder and CEO of Project Alianza, Kristin Van Busum. Project Alianza is closing the education gap in rural Central America by building safe schools and providing literacy programs and scholarships. We are a women-led organization that has provided education to over 13000 children. Kristin speaks with Messaging on a Mission Host Douglas Spencer about the challenges of creating a message that inspires people in the United States to join her organization's quest to help people in Central America. Episode Guest(s): Kristin Van Busum is the founder and CEO of Project Alianza. She has over ten years of experience as a scholar and an advocate for resilient communities. She has worked in New York City on public health initiatives to prevent obesity, helped families in need in Mexico secure stable housing, and provided counseling to incarcerated women in Indiana. Prior to founding Project Alianza, she served as Manager of Health Advisory Services at RAND Corporation, a global policy think tank. Kristin has earned degrees from Butler University and New York University and is a Fulbright Scholar. Key Takeaways: The focus was once on the wealth disparities between rich and poor nations. However, now the differences between rural and urban are more pronounced. Helping people abroad and at home are not mutually exclusive. Tap into a common belief, such as all children should feel safe when they go to school. Develop a genuine, first-hand understanding of the foreign culture you are helping to not only connect most effectively with the people there but to tell their stories more authentically as well. Understanding psychological barriers is critically important. Focus on work that is led by community leaders, not people from the United States. Think of messaging as a working document. Always have a system for managing money and being transparent with your money and your impact. Useful Links: Kristin Van Busum email@example.com Project Alianza www.projectalianza.org
The U.N.'s World Food Programme has said that twenty four million people in Afghanistan, nearly sixty percent of the country, with an estimated over three million children suffer from malnutrition. To compound the situation is the coming winter, the lack of economic activity and declining social services such as electricity and health care. FOX's Alex Hogan speaks to Dominik Stillhart, Director of Operations at the International Committee of the Red Cross, about his recent trip to Afghanistan and the current fears there.

In the keynote address for the ROK-U.S. Strategic Forum 2021, First Vice Foreign Minister Choi Jong Kun of the Republic of Korea explained South Korea's foreign policy, the ROK-U.S. alliance, inter-Korea relations and an end-of-war declaration and peace process on the Korean peninsula.
Dr. Richard Lessells is among the exceptional South African experts on the front lines of discovering and investigating Omicron in South Africa. Alarm bells went off within the scientific community, as it became clear after just a few days that “an extraordinary number of mutations” are clustered in the key regions in the genome for immune protection and transmissibility. It was a “gut feeling. ” Omicron is highly transmissible, spreading very efficiently in a population with high levels of immunity gained from previous infection and in some cases from vaccination. How long to know just how dangerous Omicron is? It's “too early to tell.” Lab work is underway to understand whether the virus affects T cells which are central to immune protection against severe disease. Why do we see such an unusual variant in South Africa? One theory, which Omicron may shed light on, is that the SARS-CoV-2 virus finds hosts who are very immune-compromised, persons living with HIV but not on anti-viral therapy. These individuals have difficulty clearing the virus, which permits it to replicate constantly over a very long period. Is this moment a pivot in the pandemic? That depends on whether Omicron significantly sets back vaccine protection, which would be a “step change.” Will this moment shock the world into more concerted global action, superseding the pattern of “vaccine apartheid”? “I remain skeptical.” In the meantime, we have to fight against Omicron being fitted to a politicized narrative: by anti-vaccine groups, to tell the story that vaccines do not work. By others, to argue that there is nothing to worry about, that the virus is becoming less pathogenic, based on anecdotal evidence. Dr. Richard Lessells is an infectious disease physician at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, in Durban, South Africa. He is a member of the Network for Genomic Surveillance in South Africa, and a researcher at CAPRISA, the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa.

The Supreme Court is set to consider a case today that could potentially undo Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that legalized abortion in the U.S. The High Court will hear a challenge to a 2018 Mississippi law that would ban most abortions at 15 weeks of pregnancy. Pro-choice advocates and lower courts say that the law violates women's rights. However, pro-life advocates say it is time to change the long-standing precedent regarding abortion. Constitution expert and FOX News Contributor Jonathan Turley previews what he calls "most consequential abortion case in decades," speculates how the more conservative Court could rule and what would happen if Roe v. Wade is actually overturned. Concern over the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been making waves across the globe and in the U.S. stocks took a dive while health officials issued warnings. President Biden spoke out, telling Americans not to panic and assuring them shutdowns would not be used to combat the pandemic. Dr. Jerome Adams, 20th U.S. Surgeon General and Director of Health Equity Initiatives at Purdue University joins to discuss why we still need more information on the severity of the Omicron variant, why this variant's multiple mutations could be cause for concern, and the need for the federal government to create more sensible policies on COVID-19 while the states make their own choices. Plus, commentary by former Rep. Jason Chaffetz, host of the Jason in the House podcast.

KDMEO, WE DON'T KNOW DRUGS. Judy and Linda stall for fall by watching four ridiculously popular Kdramas from 2004-2013! How is every single one of these about a poor dumdum uncovering a rich douchebag's heart of gold? We will be hibernating for December, in hopes that we'll get some dramas worth checking out in 2022. Happy holidays and happy New Year! Digressions: 1:51 - New Patreon donor and Listener E-mails! 14:14 - On a whim, Judy tried out "Inspector Koo" (구경이), starring Lee YoungAe. It's pretty watchable and has a great supporting cast. 16:51 - "The Handmaiden" (아가씨) is a hauntingly memorable film. It was directed by Park ChanWook, who also directed the Vengeance series of films. 18:27 - A notorious dictator is dead! Judy celebrated by watching "A Taxi Driver" (택시운전사), a 2017 film about the 1980 Gwangju Uprising. 21:03 - "Arcane" is a Netflix animated series based in the "League of Legends" universe and is an amazing show, even if you have never played the video game. 22:36 - Judy has been walking down the anime nostalgia lane with the 2019 series, "Fruits Basket" (フルーツバスケット). Ignore the stereotypical shoujo fantasy premise and focus on the message about friends, family and helping each other heal from trauma. 25:21 - "The Heirs" (왕관을 쓰려는 자, 그 무게를 견뎌라 – 상속자들) is an SBS drama from 2013, starring Lee MinHo, Park ShinHye, Kim JiWon and Kim WooBin. Ah yes, rich people problems and English-speaking "actors", Judy's favourite things in a drama. 35:50 - "Princess Hours" (궁) is a 2006 MBC drama set in an alternate universe in which Korea has a constitutional monarchy. It stars Yoon EunHye, Ju JiHoon and Song JiHyo. Yoon EunHye is playing pretty much the same character as in "Coffee Prince", a spunky girl who has to save her family from poverty. 43:17 - "Master's Sun" (주군의 태양) is a 2013 SBS drama, starring So JiSub and Gong HyoJin. Linda didn't manage to finish the episode, so Judy struggles to recap the latter half, which is absolutely bonkers. 54:30 - "Full House" (풀하우스) is a 2004 KBS drama, starring Rain and Song HyeKyo. Words cannot adequately express just how awful this drama was. How was this so popular? Some Korean terms: 흙수저: [heuk-soo-jeo] literally "dirt spoon" as compared to "silver spoon"; from an impoverished background. 알바: short for 아르바이트 [ah-reu-bah-ee-teu]; taken from German word, "arbeit", meaning "work"; minimum wage job. 미숫가루: [mi-soot-ga-roo] mixed grain powder that is usually blended with water, ice and sugar to make a summer drink. 범생: [beom-seng] short for "모범생" [mo-beom-seng], meaning "model student". 가채: [ga-che] intricate traditional wig worn by women. 한복: [han-bok] traditional Korean clothing. 사극: [sa-geuk] historical drama. 눈치: [noon-chi] a combination of "tact" and "situational awareness"; to be lacking in "눈치" is an insult. 모자라다: [mo-ja-ra-da] "to be not enough"; "to be slow" if used to describe a person. 제수씨: [jeh-soo-ssi] respectful way of addressing the significant other of a younger brother/friend. Audio credits: TRPP - "Inspector Koo" (구경이) OST - "Yeah (Round and Round)" Jo YeongWook - "The Handmaiden" (아가씨) OST - "The Tree from Mount Fuji" Cho HyeWon - "A Taxi Driver" (택시운전사) OST - "The Customer I Left Behind" (두고 온 손님) Imagine Dragons - "Arcane" - "Enemy" Beverly - "Fruits Basket" (フルーツバスケット) - "Again" Please send any questions, comments or suggestions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@kdramamyeyesout) or e-mail us (kdramamyeyesout(at)gmail.com). Does the world really need another subscription box? Do parents really need to buy more things for their kids? Well, when we're talking about Lovevery, the answer is yes and yes. In the crowded spaces of DTC subscription services and childrens products, Lovevery is making its presence known. On this episode of Up Next in Commerce, I talk to Rod Morris, the co-founder and president of Lovevery, who told me all about the development of the company's amazing products, and, more importantly, how he and his team went about making them stand out among the rest. It takes a lot of hard work — but it all starts with a complete obsession with creating a brand that you believe in and products that fill a gap in the market. Rod took me behind the scenes of getting press and testimonials for Lovevery, he told me how they create social content that sees engagement that blows the competition out of the water, and we also dug into his tips for fundraising and what the upside is to going public. England played Scotland in a publicly-advertised game for the first time on 30th November, 1872 - kickstarting international football as we know it today. The English team included players drafted in from Oxford University. The Scottish team was entirely made up of teammates from Queen's Park. The score was 0-0.Much of the game was yet to be codified - for example, that you couldn't catch a ball with your hands. Readers of the match-report in The Guardian had to have it explained to them that half-time was 45 minutes. But the game was an indisputable hit.In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal why Scotland still wear dark blue in international competitions; consider the role of cricket stadiums in the continuing confusion over pitch sizes; and question the wisdom of the photographer booked to document the occasion - who decided not to turn up…Further Reading:• ‘Scotland v England 1872' (scottishsporthistory.com): https://www.scottishsporthistory.com/scotland-v-england-1872.html• ‘The first official fixture between England and Scotland' (The Guardian, 1872): https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/nov/11/england-scotland-first-football-fixture-1872• ‘EXCLUSIVE! It wasn't supposed to be like this for Broti Gupta. This comedy thing. It wasn't supposed to be happening at all. She grew up the daughter of a doctor and there was an expectation she'd follow the same path. But as a college student, she just couldn't shake the strong interest in comedy that led her down a different path entirely, away from med school and toward places like the New Yorker, McSweeney's, and Second City. Today, she's a writer for The Simpsons and a rising star in comedy circles. One indication that her heart was not in medicine? A visit to a college counselor who challenged Broti to not try to make him laugh for one entire appointment. It's a challenge she did not accept. For Broti Gupta, the laughs were not just a way of coping with some mental health issues but also a way of approaching life itself.Follow Broti Gupta on Twitter @BrotiGupta. The emergence of the coronavirus variant Omicron has the world worried. The United States and other nations were quick to halt travel from South Africa and other countries where it has been discovered. International markets also fell Friday, as fear spread. With Americans returning home from their long Thanksgiving weekends, there is concern America can see a significant surge this holiday season. Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease specialist at Johns Hopkins University, discusses what is known and not known about the Omicron strain, how viruses mutate, and what can be done worldwide to address new variants. Like the millions of American families and businesses hit hard by the pandemic and the economic fallout, COVID has also impacted charities across the U.S.. They too are forced to cope with supply chain issues, inflation, and staff shortages. Despite those challenges, Feeding America and its network of food panties have continued to help people in need. President and Chief Operating Officer of Feeding America Katie Fitzgerald joins to discuss food insecurity in America and the how inflation and supply chain issues are impacting them. Plus, commentary from FOX News Contributor Joe Concha.
We spend a lot of time on this show encouraging our listeners—especially those who write in for advice—to throw caution to the wind and move abroad if that is their dream. But what about when the timing just doesn't seem right? Today we read a letter from a listener asking about a possible move to France, but this time we offer different advice.
