This is 22 Hours: A Second Look, where we revisit our original season with host Megan Cloherty. In this episode, we share more of Megan's interview with Abbigail Savopoulos, including memories of her mom and dad, and whose decision it was to send her to boarding school—a decision that may have saved her life. She also talks about the moments after learning her childhood home was on fire, and why she says her life became a whirlwind.New episodes drop every Tuesday.Original Episode-The Savopoulos house was held in evidence for weeks as crime scene investigators looked for clues. In the end, five pieces of forensic evidence linked Daron Wint to the killings, including a sliver of his DNA on the crust of a pizza that had been delivered to the house while he held the family captive. But was the forensic evidence a slam dunk? This episode is written and produced by reporters Megan Cloherty and Jack Moore. Today I have the pleasure of speaking with cultural anthropologist Greta YOU-LING about her new book, Decolonizing Ukraine: The Indigenous People of Crimea and Pathways to Freedom, a fascinating story about an indigenous group in Crimea fighting for its rights.  Uehling tells us of the complex history of the Crimean Tatars, a Sunni Muslim group who were driven off their land in 1944 by the Soviet Union. This group now finds itself caught in the Russia-Ukraine war. It has rebuffed attempts by Putin and yet also has insisted on maintaining and defending its indigenous identity and rights with regard to Ukraine. We talk about the importance of both cultural memory and political struggle in the present, and hear of Greta's time at the barricade which Tatars set up to stem the flow of materials across their land.Greta Uehling is a cultural anthropologist who works at the intersection of Indigenous and Eastern European Studies. She is a Teaching Professor at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she is in the Program in International and Comparative Studies and is Associate Faculty of the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies. Uehling is the author of three books: Beyond Memory: The Deportation and Return of the Crimean Tatars (Palgrave 2004), Everyday War: The Conflict over Donbas, Ukraine (Cornell University Press 2023), and Decolonizing Ukraine: The Indigenous People of Crimea and Pathways to Freedom (Rowman & Littlefield 2025). Throughout her career, Uehling has served as a consultant to organizations working in the fields of international migration, human rights, and human trafficking, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

He began to read it, the beginning of a path that would lead him to faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour and the Son of God. It was a costly decision: his devout Muslim wife divorced him and wouldn't allow him to see their daughter. His brother had Bayram committed to a mental hospital, thinking anyone who would leave Islam was mentally unstable. It has been a difficult road, but Bayram's faith has only grown stronger as he has seen God work in his life and his country. Bayram will encourage and instruct listeners on how we can help lead Muslims toward Christ, wherever they are. You can connect online with Brother Bayram and his ministry at www.albtci.org.

Listen as he shares why and how he prepares his wife and children for the day he may eventually be arrested and sent to prison. He will give an update on Christian persecution in China and how believers there are responding faithfully despite increasing government pressure. Instead of large church events, the gospel is spreading through one-on-one conversations with co-workers or neighbours as Christians share what Jesus has done in their lives. Brother Enfu encourages pastors and church leaders he trains to stay in China and serve Christians there, rather than leaving China for a more comfortable position in the West. He says that when he hears of a brother or sister imprisoned for their faith, it's an encouragement to him, even as he acknowledges the suffering they are enduring.

Are ChatGPT and other AI chatbots inducing psychosis? Or exacerbating it? Are people being hospitalized or even killed because the bots seem too human, too understanding, too lifelike? To be clear, the bots are not human. They are software. But they are so convincingly programmed to speak like people that users, especially ones who may already be having trouble discerning reality, begin to sense that the bot is alive and that the user somehow unlocked its sentience. Since the bots are also set up to be flattering, even sycophantic to the user, the connection is made even stronger. Maggie Hamilton Dupré, senior staff writer for Futurist, explains several recent cases where AI, lacking the judgment a human could provide, may have set off dangerous and even fatal outcomes.Wits Reunion Show at the Fitzgerald TheaterJohn Moe's writing classes at the Loft Literary CenterMath Emergency Farewell Show at the Amsterdam Bar and HallThank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. U.S. drug policy takes a “radical” and “chilling” turn. Is Venezuela in the crosshairs?

    WOLA Podcast

Since late August, the Trump administration has sent a flotilla of U.S. warships to the southern Caribbean, in the largest naval display in the region in decades. On September 2, a U.S. drone strike sank a small boat near the Venezuelan coast, killing as many as eleven civilians. Administration officials allege the vessel carried cocaine, but have presented no evidence. In this WOLA Podcast episode, Adam Isacson speaks with Laura Dib, Director for Venezuela, and John Walsh, Director for Drug Policy and the Andes, about the shockwaves from this escalation, both region-wide and especially in Venezuela. An Extreme New Military Stance: Seven warships and up to 7,000 personnel now patrol Caribbean waters near Venezuela. A lethal strike on September 2 marks, as Walsh calls it, “a radical departure” from decades of U.S. maritime drug-interdiction practice. Serious Legal and Human-Rights Implications: U.S. law authorizes interdiction of illegal drugs, not summary execution. “There's a word in English for an act like this,” Walsh warns. “That word is murder.” International law allows the use of force only in self-defense or with the approval of the UN Security Council—neither applies. U.S. law and policy, too, prohibit the use of lethal force on civilians without a self-defense justification. That is so even if those civilians are labeled “terrorists,” if there is no link to the September 11, 2001 attacks, and no explicit congressional authorization for the use of force. The Venezuela Context: After fraudulent July 2024 elections, Nicolás Maduro governs without legitimacy, with widespread persecution and what Dib calls “reasons to believe that crimes against humanity have been committed.” There is also a clear connection between large-scale corruption and the complex humanitarian emergency in which the country is immersed. Criminal economies flourish in a regime of state-embedded drug trafficking, but Venezuela is not the busiest route for U.S.-bound cocaine. The Reality of the U.S. Drug Overdose Crisis: The U.S. overdose emergency is driven by fentanyl and other opioids “that come almost entirely through Mexico,” Walsh notes, “with zero to do with anything in the Caribbean.” At least as of 2022, 80 percent of cocaine also transits the Pacific route via Central America and Mexico, not the Caribbean. U.S. Political Calculations: Trump administration officials boast of the strike and hint at more. They frame Venezuela as a “narco-terror” threat while simultaneously maintaining oil licenses, cooperating on deportations, and even meeting with Maduro earlier this year. Walsh warns the move feeds a domestic narrative of an “invasion” of migrants and organized crime groups to justify domestic use of emergency powers. Regional and Global Fallout: Some Latin American governments show “striking silence,” Dib observes, torn between defending sovereignty and condemning Maduro's abuses. The OAS and UN have issued only mild calls for de-escalation, reflecting both U.S. pressure and Venezuela's authoritarian reality. Both guests outline alternatives: Cut the Financial Lifelines: Dib calls for re-establishing the Justice Department's Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative to seize billions in stolen Venezuelan assets. The U.S. government should coordinate more closely with Europe and Latin America to track the proceeds of corruption and undermine the economic pillar of support for authoritarian governments with connections to illicit economies. Support Civil Society and Rule of Law: It is urgent to restore programming previously administered by USAID that sustains independent journalism and human-rights groups now operating under threat, and to use universal-jurisdiction statutes to prosecute Venezuelan officials responsible for torture or other grave abuses. Address U.S. Drug Demand at Home: Expand and strengthen harm-reduction and treatment—naloxone distribution, methadone access—that have begun to lower overdose deaths. Reject the false promise of militarized interdiction that decades of evidence show to be ineffective and costly. As Isacson sums up, “From overdose prevention to supporting civil society in Venezuela to curbing illicit financial flows…the administration is taking key tools out of its toolbox” while swinging a military sledgehammer. So, you want to go on a cruise. What could go wrong? After listening or watching today’s episode, you might think twice, for good reasons. When Jamie Barnett said goodbye to her daughter, Ashley, in 2005, who was going on a three-day cruise with her boyfriend and two other couples to Mexico, she never dreamt that it would be the last time she would see her daughter alive. What was supposed to be a birthday celebration resulted in the death of Ashley due to illegal activities on board the ship, gross negligence from the staff of the ship, and subpar medical attention aboard the cruise ship. My guest on the show today, Jamie Barnett, has turned grief and frustration from dealing with the cruise industry, government officials, and the FBI, into advocacy and hope. Jamie Barnett is the president of the International Cruise Victims (ICV) organization and became an advocate for cruise ship safety after her 24-year-old daughter, Ashley Barnett, died on a cruise in 2005 due to gross negligence by the cruise line. Her advocacy work was instrumental in the passage of the Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act of 2010, and she continues to fight for stricter regulations of cruise vessels to ensure the safety of their passengers. Jamie appeared in the Netflix docuseries "Amy Bradley is Missing," further highlighting the dangers on cruise ships by drawing parallels between her daughter's death and the disappearance of Amy Bradley in 1998 As a dad and grandpa, this episode hit home. I can’t imagine what Jamie went through and continues to go through! Bravo to Jamie and others who are attempting to keep cruise lines accountable and safer.   In today’s episode, we discuss: ·      Thank you, Vic Ferrari over at the NYPD Through The Looking Glass Podcast, for the intro. ·      The organization, International Cruise Victims, and her role, and how she became involved.   ·      How the United States Congress has become involved in attempting to make the cruise line industry safer for its guests. ·      In 2005, her daughter, Ashley, was murdered aboard a Carnival cruise to Mexico. ·      Her daughter’s body was taken to Mexico for a subpar autopsy against her wishes. ·      The FBI not charging her boyfriend with any crime after he smuggled illegal narcotics aboard that Ashley ingested and caused her death. ·      Sub-par medical attention and gross negligence aboard the ship that contributed to Ashley’s death. ·      Jamie’s connection to the recent Netflix special, Amy Bradley is Missing. ·      Jamie’s frustration with the severe lack of cooperation, sympathy, and compassion from the FBI. ·      The cruise lines that have the worst crime rates. ·      What you can do to stay safe aboard a cruise ship.

The assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk marked the latest incident in a nationwide rise in political violence, a grim trend that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have condemned. Chair of the House Republican Conference, Congresswoman Lisa McClain (R-MI), shared her reaction to Wednesday's tragedy and emphasized the need for political leaders to condemn dangerous rhetoric and violence from all sides. This week, Senate Republicans triggered a rule change that will allow them to expedite the confirmation process for some of President Trump's nominees. Republican leadership said the move was necessary because Democrats were obstructing the process. Meanwhile, footage of an unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) was shown at a House Oversight subcommittee hearing, as members of Congress investigate the government's transparency regarding mysterious objects in U.S. skies. FOX News Senior Congressional Correspondent Chad Pergram joined to break down some of the overlooked headlines from Congress this week. President Trump is escalating the war on drugs. In addition to the recent strike on an alleged drug-smuggling boat from Venezuela, the administration continues to take aggressive action to curb the flow of illicit drugs and crack down on the gangs trafficking them into the country. Special Agent Frank Tarentino, who is part of the DEA New York Division, joined FOX News Rundown host Dave Anthony to discuss how the DEA is working with the military and other government agencies to help cut off the flow of drugs into the country. Tarentino also discusses the gains they've made in fighting the fentanyl epidemic and outlines the challenges in the war on drugs. We often must cut interviews short during the week, but we thought you might like to hear the full interview. Today on Fox News Rundown Extra, we will share our entire interview with DEA Special Agent Frank Tarentino, as he explains how the drug trade operates and how he and others are working to stop it. Israel bombed a Hamas political meeting in Doha, Qatar—hosted in a U.S.-allied nation with a major American military base—while leaders were gathered to discuss a Trump-proposed ceasefire. The attack killed several people, including the son of a Hamas leader and a Qatari officer, and drew condemnation from Qatar for violating sovereignty and international law.  Jimmy and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger argue that this shows how Israel and the U.S. intentionally sabotage peace efforts while blaming Hamas, framing it as part of the “Greater Israel Project” and a pattern of destabilizing the Middle East. International reactions included sharp criticism from China and others, saying the strike proves Israel disregards global norms while still insisting on depicting itself as a victim. Also featuring segments on Rand Paul taking on JD Vance over the U.S. Military bombing of an alleged Venezuelan “drug boat” and President Trump's escalation of threats that now include the possibility of bombing inside Venezuela. Also featuring Stef Zamorano!
