Are ChatGPT and other AI chatbots inducing psychosis? Or exacerbating it? Are people being hospitalized or even killed because the bots seem too human, too understanding, too lifelike? To be clear, the bots are not human. They are software. But they are so convincingly programmed to speak like people that users, especially ones who may already be having trouble discerning reality, begin to sense that the bot is alive and that the user somehow unlocked its sentience. Since the bots are also set up to be flattering, even sycophantic to the user, the connection is made even stronger. Maggie Hamilton Dupré, senior staff writer for Futurist, explains several recent cases where AI, lacking the judgment a human could provide, may have set off dangerous and even fatal outcomes.Wits Reunion Show at the Fitzgerald TheaterJohn Moe's writing classes at the Loft Literary CenterMath Emergency Farewell Show at the Amsterdam Bar and HallThank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. Forests can be peaceful—quiet escapes from the chaos of the world. But they can also be places where when people step in, they never come out. Sometimes they're found in a bad state, sometimes they're never found at all. And either way, in the cases we're covering today, no one knows what exactly went down out there.

Since late August, the Trump administration has sent a flotilla of U.S. warships to the southern Caribbean, in the largest naval display in the region in decades. On September 2, a U.S. drone strike sank a small boat near the Venezuelan coast, killing as many as eleven civilians. Administration officials allege the vessel carried cocaine, but have presented no evidence. In this WOLA Podcast episode, Adam Isacson speaks with Laura Dib, Director for Venezuela, and John Walsh, Director for Drug Policy and the Andes, about the shockwaves from this escalation, both region-wide and especially in Venezuela. An Extreme New Military Stance: Seven warships and up to 7,000 personnel now patrol Caribbean waters near Venezuela. A lethal strike on September 2 marks, as Walsh calls it, “a radical departure” from decades of U.S. maritime drug-interdiction practice. Serious Legal and Human-Rights Implications: U.S. law authorizes interdiction of illegal drugs, not summary execution. “There's a word in English for an act like this,” Walsh warns. “That word is murder.” International law allows the use of force only in self-defense or with the approval of the UN Security Council—neither applies. U.S. law and policy, too, prohibit the use of lethal force on civilians without a self-defense justification. That is so even if those civilians are labeled “terrorists,” if there is no link to the September 11, 2001 attacks, and no explicit congressional authorization for the use of force. The Venezuela Context: After fraudulent July 2024 elections, Nicolás Maduro governs without legitimacy, with widespread persecution and what Dib calls “reasons to believe that crimes against humanity have been committed.” There is also a clear connection between large-scale corruption and the complex humanitarian emergency in which the country is immersed. Criminal economies flourish in a regime of state-embedded drug trafficking, but Venezuela is not the busiest route for U.S.-bound cocaine. The Reality of the U.S. Drug Overdose Crisis: The U.S. overdose emergency is driven by fentanyl and other opioids “that come almost entirely through Mexico,” Walsh notes, “with zero to do with anything in the Caribbean.” At least as of 2022, 80 percent of cocaine also transits the Pacific route via Central America and Mexico, not the Caribbean. U.S. Political Calculations: Trump administration officials boast of the strike and hint at more. They frame Venezuela as a “narco-terror” threat while simultaneously maintaining oil licenses, cooperating on deportations, and even meeting with Maduro earlier this year. Walsh warns the move feeds a domestic narrative of an “invasion” of migrants and organized crime groups to justify domestic use of emergency powers. Regional and Global Fallout: Some Latin American governments show “striking silence,” Dib observes, torn between defending sovereignty and condemning Maduro's abuses. The OAS and UN have issued only mild calls for de-escalation, reflecting both U.S. pressure and Venezuela's authoritarian reality. Both guests outline alternatives: Cut the Financial Lifelines: Dib calls for re-establishing the Justice Department's Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative to seize billions in stolen Venezuelan assets. The U.S. government should coordinate more closely with Europe and Latin America to track the proceeds of corruption and undermine the economic pillar of support for authoritarian governments with connections to illicit economies. Support Civil Society and Rule of Law: It is urgent to restore programming previously administered by USAID that sustains independent journalism and human-rights groups now operating under threat, and to use universal-jurisdiction statutes to prosecute Venezuelan officials responsible for torture or other grave abuses. Address U.S. Drug Demand at Home: Expand and strengthen harm-reduction and treatment—naloxone distribution, methadone access—that have begun to lower overdose deaths. Reject the false promise of militarized interdiction that decades of evidence show to be ineffective and costly. As Isacson sums up, “From overdose prevention to supporting civil society in Venezuela to curbing illicit financial flows…the administration is taking key tools out of its toolbox” while swinging a military sledgehammer. On September 10th, during an event at Utah Valley University, Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while speaking in front of a crowd of thousands. In the hours after the shooting, many Americans speculated on why it happened. The alleged shooter was later identified as Tyler Robinson, who mentioned to a family friend that he was responsible for the death of Kirk. Retired FBI special agent and CEO of The Brunner Sierra Group, Daniel Brunner, joined the Rundown to discuss what went into the FBI's investigation and catching Kirk's killer. A new study finds a 42% drop in reading for fun in the U.S. over the past 20 years. That decline is disturbing to some, as reading can be beneficial to one's mental health, sleep habits, and general well-being. Dr. Jessica Bone, senior research fellow in statistics and epidemiology at University College London, explains what's driving the decline in reading, why this trend is problematic, and how we can reverse this trend. September's highly anticipated meeting of the Federal Reserve starts tomorrow. This comes after months of President Donald Trump pressuring Chairman Jerome Powell for a rate cut. The president's public prodding of Powell coincides with his administration's ongoing effort to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook ahead of this week's key vote, accusing her of mortgage fraud. However, there have been no formal charges. While inflation remains above the Fed's 2% target, investors are betting on a cut this week. The question remains: how low could rates go, and how many cuts could happen this year? Brian Jacobson, the chief economist at Annex Wealth Management, joins Fox Business' Lydia Hu to preview this week's critical meeting and discuss some of the other major economic news that will move the markets this week. President Trump is escalating his threats to deploy unwanted and unwelcome troops to the streets of American cities; plus what we are learning from the lawsuit filed against the FBI by three former senior FBI officials alleging a campaign of retribution against those deemed insufficiently loyal to Trump; and how a Republican maneuver will further limit the power of the Democratic minority in the Senate.
A lesson from the other side of the equator about how to hold a would-be dictator accountable; plus Nicholas Kristoff on bearing witness to the deadly consequences of USAID cuts; and Project 2025 has gone from blueprint to reality in the first months of Trump's second term - but there's more to come.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) discusses dangers to democracy as President Trump threatens to deploy unwanted and unwelcome troops to the streets of more American cities; plus what's inside the explosive new lawsuit filed against the FBI by three former senior FBI officials; and why experts are warning that a coming spike in healthcare costs warns of a broader crisis.
So, you want to go on a cruise. What could go wrong? After listening or watching today’s episode, you might think twice, for good reasons. When Jamie Barnett said goodbye to her daughter, Ashley, in 2005, who was going on a three-day cruise with her boyfriend and two other couples to Mexico, she never dreamt that it would be the last time she would see her daughter alive. What was supposed to be a birthday celebration resulted in the death of Ashley due to illegal activities on board the ship, gross negligence from the staff of the ship, and subpar medical attention aboard the cruise ship. My guest on the show today, Jamie Barnett, has turned grief and frustration from dealing with the cruise industry, government officials, and the FBI, into advocacy and hope. Jamie Barnett is the president of the International Cruise Victims (ICV) organization and became an advocate for cruise ship safety after her 24-year-old daughter, Ashley Barnett, died on a cruise in 2005 due to gross negligence by the cruise line. Her advocacy work was instrumental in the passage of the Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act of 2010, and she continues to fight for stricter regulations of cruise vessels to ensure the safety of their passengers. Jamie appeared in the Netflix docuseries "Amy Bradley is Missing," further highlighting the dangers on cruise ships by drawing parallels between her daughter's death and the disappearance of Amy Bradley in 1998 As a dad and grandpa, this episode hit home. I can’t imagine what Jamie went through and continues to go through! Bravo to Jamie and others who are attempting to keep cruise lines accountable and safer. In today’s episode, we discuss: · Thank you, Vic Ferrari over at the NYPD Through The Looking Glass Podcast, for the intro. · The organization, International Cruise Victims, and her role, and how she became involved. · How the United States Congress has become involved in attempting to make the cruise line industry safer for its guests. · In 2005, her daughter, Ashley, was murdered aboard a Carnival cruise to Mexico. · Her daughter’s body was taken to Mexico for a subpar autopsy against her wishes. · The FBI not charging her boyfriend with any crime after he smuggled illegal narcotics aboard that Ashley ingested and caused her death. · Sub-par medical attention and gross negligence aboard the ship that contributed to Ashley’s death. · Jamie’s connection to the recent Netflix special, Amy Bradley is Missing. · Jamie’s frustration with the severe lack of cooperation, sympathy, and compassion from the FBI. · The cruise lines that have the worst crime rates. · What you can do to stay safe aboard a cruise ship.
The assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk marked the latest incident in a nationwide rise in political violence, a grim trend that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have condemned. Chair of the House Republican Conference, Congresswoman Lisa McClain (R-MI), shared her reaction to Wednesday's tragedy and emphasized the need for political leaders to condemn dangerous rhetoric and violence from all sides. This week, Senate Republicans triggered a rule change that will allow them to expedite the confirmation process for some of President Trump's nominees. Republican leadership said the move was necessary because Democrats were obstructing the process. Meanwhile, footage of an unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) was shown at a House Oversight subcommittee hearing, as members of Congress investigate the government's transparency regarding mysterious objects in U.S. skies. FOX News Senior Congressional Correspondent Chad Pergram joined to break down some of the overlooked headlines from Congress this week. Learn more about your ad choices. President Trump is escalating the war on drugs. In addition to the recent strike on an alleged drug-smuggling boat from Venezuela, the administration continues to take aggressive action to curb the flow of illicit drugs and crack down on the gangs trafficking them into the country. Special Agent Frank Tarentino, who is part of the DEA New York Division, joined FOX News Rundown host Dave Anthony to discuss how the DEA is working with the military and other government agencies to help cut off the flow of drugs into the country. Tarentino also discusses the gains they've made in fighting the fentanyl epidemic and outlines the challenges in the war on drugs. We often must cut interviews short during the week, but we thought you might like to hear the full interview. Today on Fox News Rundown Extra, we will share our entire interview with DEA Special Agent Frank Tarentino, as he explains how the drug trade operates and how he and others are working to stop it. A Serial Killer in the Suburbs of Paris The first victim was spotted by a passerby on August 13, 2025, as officials fished the body out of the Seine in a suburb of Paris near a known gay cruising spot. Divers searching the area found another body, then another, then another. As investigators search for answers and other possible victims, speculation swirls about the motive for the murders. The Murder of Ryan Godbey: A Family Seeks Justice Ryan Godbey, a beloved member of Canton's LGBTQ+ community, whose a disappearance and murder shocked the Canton, Ohio area in 2025. The Brutal Murder of Jacob Zieben-Hood? On August 1, 2025, 34-year-old Jacob Zieben-Hood was found stabbed to death in the Harlem apartment he shared with his husband, Donald Zieben-Hood. Behind their social media image of happiness was a history of domestic violence, protective orders, and escalating threats. From alleged strangulation in February to a knife threat in June, the abuse intensified. On July 31, Jacob called his father during another violent altercation. Hours later, he was dead. Donald was found with self-inflicted wounds and arrested for violating a protective order. Christopher Hunnisett: Vicar's Murderer Freed to Kill Again When the dismembered body of a Reverend Glazebrook was found, his lodger, Christopher Hunnisett, was arrested and put on trial, and found guilty. Acquitted of the vicar's murder, Hunnisett went on a crusade to kill as many "pedos" as he could. Studying investigative techniques, Hunnisett followed a tip to 57-year-old Peter Bick, whom he assumed was an abuser. Pretending to be a date, Hunnisett went to Bick's flat and murdered him. The details of this case are unusual, but in some ways they align with what I've been exploring in the next episode, which is the origins and legacy of the provocation defense. A State of Emergency. Millions of people are mourning the death of conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk. He is being remembered by many as someone who inspired thousands of young conservatives to become politically active and proudly express their views. The day after Kirk was assassinated, FOX News Rundown host Dave Anthony spoke with Campus Reform reporter Emily Sturge and Leadership Institute regional field recruiter Cooper Brown, two young Americans who admired Kirk and worked with him. Brown was at the Utah Valley University event on Wednesday and was just feet away when Kirk was shot. Cooper described what he witnessed and explained why Kirk's events, where he debated college students, were so popular. Sturge has been a fan of Kirk since she was a teenager and credited him for her career in reporting. The two discussed his legacy and whether there is a chance his murder will create some unity in the country. We often must cut interviews short during the week, but we thought you might like to hear the full interview. Today on Fox News Rundown Extra, we will share our entire interview with young conservatives Emily Sturge and Cooper Brown and let you hear more about why they believe Kirk was influential to so many. Israel bombed a Hamas political meeting in Doha, Qatar—hosted in a U.S.-allied nation with a major American military base—while leaders were gathered to discuss a Trump-proposed ceasefire. The attack killed several people, including the son of a Hamas leader and a Qatari officer, and drew condemnation from Qatar for violating sovereignty and international law. Jimmy and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger argue that this shows how Israel and the U.S. intentionally sabotage peace efforts while blaming Hamas, framing it as part of the “Greater Israel Project” and a pattern of destabilizing the Middle East. International reactions included sharp criticism from China and others, saying the strike proves Israel disregards global norms while still insisting on depicting itself as a victim. Also featuring segments on Rand Paul taking on JD Vance over the U.S. Military bombing of an alleged Venezuelan “drug boat” and President Trump's escalation of threats that now include the possibility of bombing inside Venezuela. Also featuring Stef Zamorano!

Discover why the economic news supports one interest rate cut and possibly more. Are you on track for financial freedom...or not? Financial freedom is a combination of money, compounding and time (my McT Formula). How well you invest can make the biggest difference to your financial freedom and lifestyle. If you invested well for the long-term, what a difference it would make because the difference between investing $100k and earning 5 percent or 10 percent on your money over 30 years, is the difference between it growing to $432,194 or $1,744,940, an increase of over $1.3 million dollars. Send us fan responses! Step into the hidden world of private banking as we pull back the curtain on how wealthy families truly protect and grow their assets. This eye-opening conversation reveals the fundamental truth that "you can never own anything in America" – and what you can do about it.Discover why making your name a business through LLCs and holding companies creates a protective barrier between your assets and potential threats. We explore the five charging order protection states (Nevada, Wyoming, Delaware, South Dakota, and Alaska) and why they're crucial for proper asset structuring. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when we uncover how Research and Development tax credits allow businesses to recover up to $500,000 per year – a strategy most tax professionals never mention. You'll learn about forms 6765, 8974, and 941, and how to leverage them properly.Ministry trusts and 508(c)(1)(a) organizations emerge as the cornerstone of private family wealth, offering both tax advantages and independence unlike their 501(c)(3) counterparts. We discuss how family Bibles and baptismal certificates can serve as legitimate identification, and why Social Security numbers represent a public trust system rather than a path to financial freedom.International banking strategies reveal how establishing accounts in countries like Palau, Georgia, Russia, or Ukraine can provide legitimate alternatives without U.S. identification requirements. We also cover the legal foundations for these strategies, including 28 CFR 802.23, which protects your right to privacy.Whether you're looking to protect existing assets or build generational wealth from scratch, this episode provides the framework for thinking and operating like the private families who have preserved wealth for centuries. In this discussion we talk with Professor Corinna Mullin who is a member of the Anti-Imperialist Scholars Collective. Corinna Mullin is an anti-imperialist academic who teaches political science and economics. Her research examines the historical legacies of colonialism and the role of capitalist expansion and imperialist imbrications in producing peripheral state “security dependency,” with a focus on unequal exchange, super-exploitation, resource extraction, and other forms of surplus value drain/transfer as well as resistance. Corinna has also researched and published academic works on border imperialism, struggles around the colonial-capitalist university, fascism, multipolarity, and national liberation, with a focus on the Maghreb, West Asia, and Turtle Island. Corinna was a member of the Steering Committee for the International Peoples' Tribunal on U.S. Imperialism and organizes with CUNY for Palestine and Labor for Palestine. She serves on the Steering Committee of the Professional Staff Congress (PSC)-CUNY's International Committee and is a member of the Delegate Assembly. Full bio from AISC. In this discussion we primarily discuss her piece, Zionism, Imperialism, and the Struggle Against Global Fascism: Palestine as the ‘Hornet's Nest' of US Empire from the Anti-Imperialist Scholars Collective blog The Pen Is My Machete And a little bit on her piece The ‘War on Terror' as Primitive Accumulation in Tunisia: US-Led Imperialism and the Post-2010-2011 Revolt/Security Conjuncture from Middle East Critique Also I say more about this in the episode, but Dr. Mullin was fired from CUNY as a result of her stance and organizing with respect to Palestine. We will include a statement from AISC on this and a Statement in Solidarity with CUNY Faculty and Students Facing McCarthyite Retaliation for Palestine Solidarity which we have signed. There are also a number of other calls to action for faculty and students at CUNY that we will include in the show description. Corinna talks about those at the end of the episode and we strongly encourage folks to support those calls to action it only takes a minute of your time. In this discussion Dr. Mullin talks a little bit about Dr. Ali Kadri's The Accumulation of Waste: A Political Economy of Systemic Destruction and it just so happens that we have a study group on that exact book starting on October 1st, it's available to everyone who supports the show, whether through patreon, BuyMeACoffee or as a YouTube member of the show. Details on that study group and how to join it are linked in the show description. But just to note that there are only about 40 spots left in the group as we publish this, so if you want to join us, make sure you do so ASAP to reserve your space. Calls to Action: "Hadeeqa Arzoo Malik is being made an example of for the sake of setting the tone across the nation at public universities, as they seek further control over the student movement for Palestine. City College President Vincent Boudreau has already denied her appeal for a drop to the charges, without even an acknowledgement to the 2,000+ calls and emails from the community that demanded her reinstatement. Now, it is time to escalate both our tactics against CUNY and whom we pressure— Take it to the Board of Trustees. "Demand Immediate Reinstatement of Terminated Adjunct Faculty and Defend Academic Freedom Send a letter to Brooklyn College President Michelle Anderson, CUNY Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez, and CUNY Board Chairperson William Thompson urging them to reinstate the fired adjunct faculty and protect the rights of CUNY students and workers who stand in solidarity with Palestine.
