Episode #609: Jostein Kobbeltvedt, director of the Rafto Foundation for Human Rights in Bergen, Norway, reflects on how the 1990 Rafto Prize awarded to Aung San Suu Kyi helped bring Myanmar's democracy struggle to international attention and how the global narrative surrounding her later collided with the realities of governing. The Rafto Foundation was created to recognize human rights defenders while their struggles are still unfolding. Early laureates were dissidents from Eastern Europe, and the committee's decision to recognize Suu Kyi marked an expansion of the prize's focus beyond that region. At the time of the award, Suu Kyi was under house arrest and largely unknown outside Myanmar. Her name came to the committee's attention through a brief newspaper mention, yet the prize helped introduce her story to wider audiences. International recognition soon followed, including the Nobel Peace Prize. The Rafto Foundation maintained long-term contact with Suu Kyi and her family during her detention, and in 2013 she traveled to Bergen to formally receive the prize. But the narrative surrounding Suu Kyi shifted dramatically after she entered government following Myanmar's 2015 elections. As State Counsellor, she confronted political constraints that differed from those she faced as an opposition leader. Violence against Rohingya communities beginning in 2016, and her response to the crisis shocked many international supporters who had viewed her as a democratic icon. The experience highlights the complexities of democratic transitions and the enduring influence of military power within Myanmar's political system. It also illustrates how international advocacy, economic engagement, and diplomacy have shaped Norway's evolving relationship with Myanmar. Despite continuing setbacks, Kobbeltvedt emphasizes that Myanmar's citizens remain committed to pursuing democracy, and their struggle continues to draw international solidarity.

Investing can feel overwhelming. With countless funds, strategies, market forecasts, and opinions competing for attention, it's easy to assume that successful investing requires constant analysis and a complicated portfolio.But it doesn't have to.For decades, Sound Mind Investing has offered an indexing strategy called Just-the-Basics, designed around simplicity, diversification, and minimal maintenance. According to Mark Biller, Executive Editor and Senior Portfolio Manager at Sound Mind Investing, a straightforward indexing approach can also work alongside more active investment strategies.The key may not be choosing between active investing and indexing, but understanding how both can fit in a well-designed portfolio.How Index Investing WorksIndex investing begins with a simple idea: rather than trying to beat the market, investors seek to earn approximately the market's return.They typically accomplish this through low-cost index funds that track a particular market benchmark. Because these funds generally require less active management, their expenses tend to be lower than those of actively managed funds.Over time, those lower costs can be significant. “Indexing is based on the idea that an investor is going to give up trying to beat the market in favor of just earning the market's return,” Biller explains.Sound Mind Investing's Just-the-Basics strategy takes that concept and keeps it intentionally simple. It uses three stock index funds and, when appropriate for the investor's asset allocation, a bond index fund.Once established, the strategy requires relatively little maintenance—typically an annual portfolio rebalance. That simplicity can make indexing especially appealing to investors who don't want to continually monitor markets or make frequent investment decisions.Active Investing or Indexing? Why Not Both?Investors sometimes treat active management and indexing as competing philosophies. Either you try to outperform the market, or you simply track it.SMI takes a different approach. Although the organization may be better known for its active strategies, Just-the-Basics was actually the first investing strategy introduced in the SMI newsletter more than three decades ago.Rather than viewing active investing and indexing as an either-or decision, Biller suggests thinking in terms of both-and.That approach can be particularly useful for investors whose workplace retirement plans offer mostly index funds. For example, an investor might use low-cost index funds inside a 401(k) while employing active strategies elsewhere in the portfolio.Combining the two can create another layer of diversification without requiring every investment account to follow the same approach.Why Use More Than One Stock Index Fund?If simplicity is the goal, why not simply purchase a total stock market index fund?That would certainly be easy. But SMI has historically used three separate stock index funds instead. There are practical reasons for that.When Just-the-Basics was first introduced, total stock market index funds were not yet widely available. More importantly, many workplace retirement plans still do not offer a true total-market option.Most plans, however, offer something similar to an S&P 500 index fund that tracks large U.S. companies. They may also offer a small-company fund and an international fund. Using several index funds makes it possible to build broader diversification even when a total-market fund isn't available.Otherwise, investors who substitute an S&P 500 fund for a total-market fund could end up concentrated primarily in large U.S. companies.That concentration has worked especially well for much of the past 15 years, but recent performance does not necessarily predict future performance.Why Diversification Still MattersThe dominance of large U.S. companies in recent years has raised questions about whether investors still need meaningful exposure to smaller companies and international markets.SMI believes they do, although the organization has adjusted its allocations over time. The challenge is determining how much weight investors should place on recent history compared with longer-term market patterns.Large-company stocks have been exceptionally strong during the past 15 years. But when SMI examined a longer 30-year period, the picture became more complicated.Large companies slightly outperformed smaller and mid-sized companies over the full period. But when those 30 years were divided into two 15-year segments, the leadership changed. The more recent period favored large companies, while the earlier period favored the broader extended market.That serves as an important reminder: market leadership can change.Diversification means accepting that not every part of your portfolio will be the top performer at the same time. The goal is not necessarily to own only what has recently performed best, but to build a portfolio prepared for different market environments.What About International Stocks?International stocks present perhaps the more difficult diversification question.Foreign stocks have significantly lagged U.S. stocks over much of the past few decades. That has caused some investors to wonder whether international exposure is still necessary.Biller points to the concept of mean reversion—the tendency for an asset class that has significantly underperformed over a long period eventually to improve, while an asset class that has experienced exceptional performance may eventually cool.Historically, U.S. and international stocks have alternated leadership over extended periods.SMI has therefore maintained some international exposure while reducing its allocation. The Just-the-Basics strategy previously devoted 20% of its stock allocation to foreign investments; it has since reduced that figure to 10%.The goal isn't to assume that history will repeat itself perfectly. Instead, it's to maintain some diversification while acknowledging the changing structure of global markets. And because the strategy is simple, investors can adjust those percentages based on their own situation and investment philosophy.Indexing Can Help Investors Emotionally, TooDiversification isn't only about mathematics. It can also influence investor behavior.Active investing inevitably produces periods when a strategy trails the broader market. During those times, investors may become frustrated and begin questioning their approach.Biller describes a common temptation: when an active strategy underperforms, investors may think, “I should have just bought the index.”Holding some indexed investments can reduce that all-or-nothing feeling. Part of the portfolio simply tracks the broader market while another portion follows an active strategy. That can make it psychologically easier to remain disciplined when one approach temporarily falls behind another.And investor behavior matters. Even a sound strategy can fail to produce its intended results if an investor repeatedly abandons it based on short-term performance.What Could a Simple Index Portfolio Look Like?For investors interested in a basic indexing approach, the structure does not have to be complicated. The Just-the-Basics stock allocation is approximately:60% large U.S. companies30% smaller U.S. companies10% international companiesDepending on an investor's age, goals, risk tolerance, and overall financial situation, investors can also incorporate bonds into the portfolio. The exact percentages are less important than the underlying principle: build a diversified allocation you understand and can maintain consistently.For many investors, similar funds may already be available inside their workplace retirement plan.Simple Can Still Be WiseInvesting does not need to become a full-time job.Active strategies may make sense in some situations. Other times, simply owning diversified, low-cost index funds is entirely appropriate. Let's All Celebrate International Country Music Day the only way we know how

Business systems are what separate a great idea from a business that can grow beyond its founder. A concept may work brilliantly in one location with the right people, the right customers, and the founder closely involved. The bigger test comes when that same experience has to work in another location, another market, or another country. That challenge becomes even more significant when the customer experience depends heavily on people. Processes can be documented, technology can be standardized, and performance can be measured, but culture, service, and human connection are harder to replicate. Pete Hull has experienced that challenge firsthand. As Founder and CEO of Fitstop, he has helped grow a fitness concept that began in his parents' garage in Australia into a global brand with more than 170 locations across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United States. Fitstop's growth provides a useful example of how business systems can support expansion without removing the human elements that made the original concept successful. It also demonstrates why sustainable growth requires more than simply duplicating what worked once. Turn What Works Into a Repeatable System Pete's path to entrepreneurship began long before Fitstop became an international franchise. After two knee reconstructions ended his pursuit of becoming a professional motocross athlete, he moved into coaching and became deeply interested in strength and conditioning, human performance, and helping people make measurable progress. Eventually, Pete began considering how he could take the benefits of one-on-one coaching and create something that could serve more people. The challenge was not simply putting more people into the same workout. He wanted to preserve the progressive nature of athletic training while creating a model that could work in a group environment. That distinction matters in almost every industry. Scaling effectively requires identifying what actually produces the result for the customer and building business systems around those elements. For Fitstop, that meant developing a centralized training methodology rather than allowing every location or coach to independently decide what the customer experience should look like. Studios operate from the same underlying programming, while individual owners and coaches can still bring their personalities and energy to the local community. Pete described the balance simply: "Your vibe attracts your tribe." That balance between standardization and personalization is one of the more difficult parts of building a multi-location business. Too much variation can weaken the brand. Too much standardization can make the experience feel disconnected from the local market. Strong business systems establish the non-negotiables while creating room for people to deliver those standards authentically. Build Systems Around the Customer Experience Operational consistency matters, but consistency alone does not create customer loyalty. A business also needs to understand what keeps customers engaged and what ultimately produces the outcome they came for. Pete's approach starts with the member experience. He explained that the fundamental responsibility of a gym, personal trainer, or fitness business is to serve its members by helping them achieve their goals. Fitstop's systems were built around that objective rather than around simply getting people through a workout. The company's group training model deliberately creates interaction among members. People train together, support one another, push each other, and celebrate progress together. Pete describes the formula as combining the science of strength and conditioning with "the art of human connection." That connection becomes part of the business model rather than something the company hopes will happen organically. Fitstop also tracks progress and gives members milestones to pursue. Members advance through statuses based on participation, testing is incorporated into programming, results can be logged in the company's app, and achievements are celebrated inside the studio. Those systems do more than encourage participation. They create opportunities for customers to recognize their own progress. Progress can be one of the most powerful forms of customer retention. When customers can see evidence that the product or service is helping them move toward something they value, they have a compelling reason to continue. That satisfaction can also become a growth engine. Pete talks about creating "raving fans" who naturally promote the business because they are proud of what they have accomplished. Fitstop supports that behavior with a referral model that allows members to invite friends into the experience. The broader business principle applies well beyond fitness. Referrals become much easier when customers have a result worth talking about. Protect the System as the Business Grows Business systems become increasingly important as an organization adds locations and moves farther away from the founder's direct oversight. Fitstop began franchising in 2017 after Pete and his wife had self-funded the first two studios. Pete had been transparent with his managers about the financials, the direction of the business, and what they were trying to build. When managers wanted to buy the studios, it helped propel Pete into franchising. The model eventually expanded internationally. New Zealand provided an important test because Fitstop had to launch during a period when the team could not simply travel there and manage everything in person. The circumstances forced the company to improve onboarding, presales, coaching education, and other systems that could be delivered remotely. That experience demonstrated something important about scalability: if a business requires the founder or corporate team to physically solve every problem, it has not truly built a scalable system. International growth increased the stakes even further. Fitstop needed enough consistency that members could recognize the brand while still allowing local operators to build relationships within their own communities. This is where franchising creates both an opportunity and a challenge. Franchisees are business owners, and strong owners will inevitably have ideas. But allowing every operator to independently change the model can quickly erode the consistency that gives the brand its value. Pete's philosophy for handling that tension is captured in another memorable phrase: "We're curious, not furious." Instead of immediately rejecting an idea, his team asks questions and looks at the data. Fitstop can compare performance across studios and examine what its strongest operators are doing. If an idea has merit, it can move through the Franchise Advisory Council and potentially become a pilot program. Successful ideas can then be introduced more broadly. Pete summarized the approach another way when describing how he responds to changes that may be premature: "I'm not saying no, I'm just saying not right now." This creates a path for innovation without turning the franchise system into more than 170 independent experiments. Use Data to Strengthen Business Systems As an organization grows, intuition becomes less reliable as the primary management tool. Leaders need visibility into what is happening across the business. Pete describes Fitstop as a highly data-driven organization. The company uses performance information to support franchisees, compare locations, evaluate ideas, and identify where an operator may need additional support. Technology and AI are increasingly part of that infrastructure. Pete specifically points to Claude as a tool Fitstop uses for business modeling, financial modeling, and evaluating studio performance. The company also has systems that allow it to monitor planning, statistics, and other performance indicators across the network. The technology, however, does not eliminate the need for human observation. Pete says he blocks out time to look at studio social media because even a short story can provide clues about the culture inside a location. Fitstop's business performance coaches also conduct annual health checks that include studio visits, financial audits, and planning reviews. That combination is important. Dashboards can tell leaders what is happening numerically, but they may not fully explain why it is happening. The best business systems create visibility at both levels. Leaders need quantitative measures that reveal trends and qualitative signals that show what customers and employees are actually experiencing. As Pete noted, people who are progressing tend to be happier and more motivated. When performance begins moving backward, whether in fitness or business, intervention may be needed. Consistency Creates the Foundation for Growth There is a temptation to associate business growth with constant innovation. New markets, new products, new campaigns, and new strategies are exciting. Yet much of sustainable growth comes from doing the fundamentals exceptionally well and repeating them. That philosophy is evident in Pete's approach to both business and personal performance. When asked about his own routines, he did not point to an elaborate productivity system or unusual high-performance ritual. Instead, he emphasized a stable lifestyle built around basics such as sleep, nutrition, hydration, training, and physical activity. "Do the basics really, really well, but just keep showing up and be consistent with it." The same principle applies to organizations. A company does not become scalable because it documented a few procedures. Business systems have to become part of how the organization operates every day. People need to understand the standards, follow them, measure the results, and improve them when the evidence supports a change. Consistency is especially important when the company is expanding into new markets. Customers should not have to wonder whether the experience they receive depends entirely on which location they happen to visit. At the same time, consistency should not eliminate humanity. Pete's approach to Fitstop illustrates how a company can globalize the underlying brand and methodology while allowing local owners and coaches to build meaningful relationships in their communities. That may ultimately be one of the most important lessons for any leader trying to turn an idea into a larger organization. Growth does not require removing people from the equation. Ed and Richard are joined by Summer Hull and newly ChatGPT-certified travel genius Julian Kheel for an episode that somehow takes 17 minutes to get to the news—and makes pretty good use of those 17 minutes. First, there's a celebration: Miles To Go has officially passed 10,000 YouTube subscribers. There's also an update on Richard's missing birthday present, the Flight Wall Mini, and the group examines ChatGPT's scientific determination that there's a "surprisingly strong case" for Julian being a genius. Then they finally get to the news. The TSA is testing Gateside, which allows TSA PreCheck members at participating airports to request access beyond security even when they aren't flying. That means meeting someone at the gate—or accompanying a family member who needs help—could once again become possible. Julian loves the idea, Summer isn't planning recreational trips to the gate, and Richard points out that there have always been…other ways to accomplish this. There's potentially another TSA change coming as well: allowing PreCheck members to bring water through security. But Ed has questions about how smoothly Gateside will actually work when travelers arrive at the checkpoint without a boarding pass, especially given Richard's recent experiences with TSA Touch Free. After Julian departs, the conversation turns to Frontier's major loyalty changes. Diamond status will become easier to earn, but mileage earning is being reduced across fares and several elite benefits are disappearing unless travelers purchase bundles. Richard says Frontier will become much more situational for his family, especially with Gold members losing seat selection at booking. But Frontier's changes come at a particularly interesting time because domestic airfare is getting painful. Summer is paying Frontier for an upcoming family trip to Orlando because comparable United tickets were roughly $2,500–$3,000 for four people. Richard faced similarly painful pricing from New York. Without Spirit providing as much low-cost competition, the group discusses whether we're already seeing the effects in leisure markets such as Orlando and Las Vegas. And miles aren't necessarily saving the day. Summer found United awards running 40,000–50,000 miles for expensive Orlando flights, while international award travel brings its own problem: increasingly painful taxes and fees, particularly when traveling as a family. There are still wins. Summer snagged business class to Europe for 68,000 United miles per person with minimal fees, while Ed found reasonably priced Honolulu–Sydney awards and used an Atmos Rewards 100,000-mile companion certificate. The game isn't dead—but having flexibility, alerts and the right tools is becoming increasingly important. Ransomware has changed dramatically over the years. What started as criminals locking up individual computers and demanding relatively small payments has grown into a much larger operation involving stolen data, entire networks, third-party vendors, and increasingly sophisticated ways of pressuring victims to pay. Now AI is adding another wrinkle, giving criminals new tools while also creating some unexpected problems for them. Joining me to talk about how ransomware has evolved is Allan Liska, a ransomware researcher and Field CISO at Recorded Future. Allan has more than 30 years of experience in information security and has spent the last 12 years researching ransomware. He has advised major corporations and government agencies, served on national ransomware task forces, and written extensively about ransomware and threat intelligence. We talk about how ransomware became the business it is today, why small businesses can be just as vulnerable as larger organizations, and how attackers are increasingly going after trusted vendors instead of their intended targets directly. We also discuss what happens inside an organization after an attack, why disrupting ransomware groups really can make a difference, how AI is being used by criminals, and some of the mistakes ransomware operators make that ultimately work against them. Show Notes: [01:06] Allan Liska introduces himself and shares how his work at FireEye led him to begin researching ransomware more than a decade ago. [03:10] Growing ransomware problems pushed Allan and other researchers to begin developing better detections for attacks that many security teams were overlooking. [05:22] Ransomware evolved from attacks on individual computers to taking down entire networks and later stealing data to pressure victims into paying. [06:30] Publicly naming victims gave ransomware groups their own form of publicity and made it much harder for organizations to quietly deny an attack. [08:05] Encryption creates technical challenges for criminals, and stealing valuable data can sometimes be just as effective as encrypting an organization's systems. [09:28] Attackers increasingly target vendors and partners, while some groups are now using AI to create fake stolen data and falsely claim organizations as victims. [13:05] Chris and Allan discuss how transparency and regular communication can help organizations manage public trust after a security incident. [14:35] Ransomware response can quickly lead to employee burnout, making outside coordination and basic needs like sleep, food, and scheduling an important part of incident management. [16:14] A major breach may temporarily open security budgets, so organizations should already know which improvements they would prioritize after an incident. [23:29] International law enforcement agencies have become increasingly creative about tracking ransomware operators and waiting for them to make mistakes. [25:48] Being skilled at hacking does not necessarily mean criminals are equally skilled at protecting their identities or activities from intelligence agencies. [28:21] Ransomware groups frequently make technical and strategic mistakes, including faulty AI-generated tools, reused encryption keys, and stealing data nobody considers valuable. [29:36] Fewer ransomware victims are paying, but average payments are increasing, and ransomware remains profitable enough to attract new threat actors. [33:09] Allan explains why simply banning ransom payments may not work and discusses approaches that could give governments better intelligence about where payments go. [39:33] Collaboration remains an important part of ransomware research, and Allan encourages people entering the field to learn from other researchers and security communities. Histamine is quite possibly the most popular buzzword in healthcare right now and for good reason. For those living with a vestibular condition and dealing with a histamine intolerance, it can feel like a lot to understand and manage. Have you ever been knocked completely unconscious?That's the perfectly normal question Rizz decides to open the week with, and suddenly everybody is digging through their personal history to figure out whether they've ever actually been knocked out cold.Moon has the strongest résumé, considering he somehow accumulated 219 stitches in his head and face as a kid and remembers multiple collisions where everything went black. Rafe recalls a helmet-to-helmet football hit that left him seeing the proverbial cartoon birds before collapsing. Lern doesn't think she's ever been fully knocked unconscious, although growing up with cousins who regularly beat the crap out of her apparently made it a legitimate possibility.And Rizz?Rizz has been watching compilation videos of other people getting absolutely demolished.Healthy Monday morning behavior.One clip involving a guy falling off a boat, smashing his head on a dock and disappearing into the water becomes particularly concerning — mostly because Rizz's algorithm apparently believes watching strangers fall down is his primary hobby.From there, this funny podcast heads south of the border as Moon returns from Mexico City after performing with Goldfinger at Warped Tour.And this was not exactly an intimate acoustic evening.Moon describes roughly 40,000 people packed in front of their stage, with the festival selling more than 150,000 tickets overall. He talks about Mexico City's enormous scale, the altitude, the incredible food, the people, the wealth disparity and the extra security precautions surrounding touring musicians in a place where the rules and risks can feel very different.There are chilaquiles. There are frijoles. There are expensive cigars. There's a ridiculously expensive steak.And naturally, Rizz's primary concern is whether Moon remembered to buy him Viagra.International travel really broadens the mind.Moon also talks about flying around the anniversary of 9/11, which leads into a discussion about airport security and TSA programs that could potentially allow approved non-ticketed visitors back through security at select airports. The gang remembers the ancient civilization known as “the 1990s,” when you could actually walk someone all the way to their gate without being treated like you were attempting to infiltrate NORAD.They also get into liquid restrictions, TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, inconsistent airport screening and the horrifying experience of throwing away expensive shampoo because apparently national security depends on Lern traveling with a tiny bottle of conditioner.Then Rafe reveals that he witnessed something deeply disturbing on 9/11:A family ordered two seafood towers.Two towers.And Rafe watched the second one go down.We apologize to everyone.Food remains a theme when the crew compares absurd restaurant prices, including Moon's Mexico City steakhouse experience and Lern contemplating finally dropping serious money on Alinea in Chicago for an anniversary dinner. Because nothing says romance like spending enough on dinner to briefly reconsider your retirement plan.Then Lern enters a place far more dangerous than Mexico City:Youth baseball.She attends her best friend's son's game and discovers an ecosystem of pop-up tents blocking everyone's view, dads standing directly behind home plate, parents coaching from the sidelines and one father criticizing his own kid so relentlessly that Lern — a woman who isn't even entirely sure how old the child she came to support is — starts emotionally adopting the entire team.That launches a bigger conversation about parents living through their kids, screaming at coaches and officials, and turning youth sports into their own personal Game 7.Rafe remembers his dad loudly chirping him from the stands during basketball games. Moon remembers a young umpire being so intimidated by an aggressive coach that the situation became genuinely humiliating. Rizz talks about parents screaming at aging high-school officials who are simply trying to keep up with teenage athletes without requiring emergency medical assistance.The consensus?Maybe let the kids play.Wild concept.But this episode still has one more masterpiece waiting.Lern's band plays an outdoor show at Schlafly Bottleworks, where the heat is brutal, the crowd is lively and one audience member decides that simply watching the band isn't enough.This person brings a guitar.And an amp.Then sets up in front of the actual band and starts playing along.Not invited.Not part of the group.Just spiritually promoted themselves to guitarist.People in the crowd start moving away while Lern tries to process whether this is annoying, hilarious or possibly the boldest audition in music history. The mystery musician is apparently friendly, fist-bumps Lern, makes song requests and continues enjoying their completely unauthorized guest appearance.Moon thinks Lern missed an opportunity.His solution? Bring the person onstage. Turn them into part of the show. Maybe let them shred. Maybe get them to stage dive.If it were Greek Fire?Security.Immediately.That's called artistic integrity.By the end, this funny podcast has managed to connect head injuries, massive concerts in Mexico City, airport security, seafood towers, $190 steaks, overbearing baseball parents and the only person brave enough to attend a concert and apparently think, “These guys could use another guitarist.”Episode 174 is The Rizzuto Show doing what it does best: beginning with one innocent question and somehow ending up in six completely different arguments nobody knew they needed.It's travel stories, St. Louis comedy, concert chaos, parenting disasters, weird personal memories and sarcastic humor from a group of people who can turn airport shampoo regulations into a legitimate morning discussion.Come for Moon playing in front of tens of thousands of people. The acclaimed singer and songwriter Nicole Atkins is pretty adept at reading clues that something is wrong.
