On Feb. 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt announced Executive Order 9066, which authorized the confinement of tens of thousands of Japanese and Japanese-Americans living in the Western U.S., sending them to cramped, hastily-constructed camps like Manzanar and Amache.  One such Japanese-American was Karl Yoneda, a well-known labor activist–and the husband of Elaine Yoneda, a Jewish-American woman. Elaine soon followed her husband to the Manzanar camp, after authorities threatened to send her three-year-old mixed-race son, Thomas, to the camp alone.  The Yonedas time in the camp is the subject of Tracy Slater's book, Together in Manzanar: The True Story of a Japanese Jewish Family in an American Concentration Camp (Chicago Review Press, 2025) Tracy is a Jewish American writer from Boston, based in her husband's country of Japan. Israel's defence minister, Israel Katz, told journalists earlier this month that he has instructed the military to draw up plans for a camp in southern Gaza, which would eventually house the entire population of the strip. According to Israel's Haaretz newspaper, Katz said residents would not be allowed to leave once they entered — although he and other Israeli officials are still talking about plans to deport, or “voluntarily relocate,” Gazan civilians. While Katz described this as a “humanitarian city,” critics — including a former Israeli prime minister — have decried the plan as a “concentration camp.”Today, we'll first hear from a man in the area of southern Gaza from which people would theoretically be moved into this proposed camp. Then we'll speak to Dahlia Scheindlin, a Tel Aviv-based pollster and political analyst, and author of the recent book The Crooked Timber of Democracy in Israel: Promise Unfulfilled. For transcripts of Front Burner, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts

In a Guardian interview, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said a planned humanitarian zone in southern Gaza would be a "concentration camp" for Gaza's Arabs. On this week's Israel Uncensored, Josh Hasten says that Olmert disgraces the suffering of Jews in the Holocaust who were placed in actual concentration camps before their murder. Hasten says that in reality, Israel aims to create humanitarian zones, sterile of Hamas, for hundreds of thousands of Gazans, thus protecting them away from the front lines. He says that Olmert's wording does tremendous damage to those fighting for Israel in the public diplomacy arena. Photo Credit: CC BY 3.0 br, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=667029

We just talked live with our regular Thursday guest, the political sage Anat Shenker-Osorio, and nearly 1,400 of you, about how to even begin talking about the human tragedies that are connected to the biggest political questions and why Democrats seem so unable to tell the stories that can make those connections. She talked to us about:* Why right after a tragedy like the flooding in Texas, when people feel it's the most inappropriate time to raise the real questions, is exactly the time to act because it's when the most interest in solving a problem exists: “If not now, when?” * How Zohran Mamdani has broken out of the Democratic trap of depending on polls and is showing the party how to be a leader — even if they can't see it yet* Why protests are great, but they're just the beginning: and why the strategy now is “resist, refuse, and ridicule”You won't want to miss any of it. I fully expected the big, ugly budget to pass. No question. Still, when it happened, all the months of reading and researching hit home. And not in a good way. Maybe it was Congressman Hakeem Jeffries' impassioned 9-hour filibuster, ironically called a "MAGIC MINUTE." This feeling of sorrow and dread stems from the fact that I watched the speech rather than sleep. And I'm sure the fact that the 4th of July, Independence Day, is my favorite holiday has contributed to this feeling that my country is gone,  It's not going to be the same this year due to the horror of watching ICE agents drag Americans off the streets because they "look" like immigrants. And it's going to get worse for several reasons, including the additional BILLIONS OF dollars in the Ugly Budget for ICE. And this is my opinion, the agents, the people in charge, seem to be the DUMBEST people on earth. Yes, that would be the "Puppy Killer" Noem, who does not know the definition of "habeas corpus" and the Hobo Looking Tom Hollman. Every day that passes, he looks more and more like a crazy homeless man who needs a bath, wandering the streets, looking for a free meal. They are dumb and mean, the worst combination. Thanks for letting me share my thoughts. Please subscribe. Coming up, a wrap in the ugly budget, and more on the Concentration Camp in Florida.   BACKGROUND ON THE JEFFERIES "MAGIC MINUTE." THIS IS FROM WIKIPEDIA: The magic minute, or leadership minute, is a custom in the United States House of Representatives that allows party leaders to speak for as long as they wish, in contrast with other members, who have to adhere to strict time limits. Speeches one minute in length are allowed before or after legislative sessions every day. Members are asked to stay within a 300-word limit. The speeches are granted permission from the Speaker. The magic minute is distinct from the Senate filibuster. The House speaker, majority leader, and minority leader are afforded this privilege, and their speeches are considered to have taken one minute, regardless of actual length. This ensures that other members' allotted times are not taken up. The House parliamentarian has advised in response to queries regarding time limits that "it is the custom of the House to hear the leader's remarks" and that party leaders had "used a customary amount of time" in answer to parliamentary inquiries about how much time had elapsed since they began speaking.

During World War II, several thousand women served as concentration camp guards in Nazi Germany, particularly within the SS women’s auxiliary. These female guards—known as Aufseherinnen—were deployed mainly in camps like Ravensbrück (a women's camp), Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, and Majdanek. Recruited largely from working-class backgrounds, many were trained at Ravensbrück before being assigned to other camps. … Continue reading Episode 460: SS Women – Female Concentration Camp Guards

In this episode, Jen Taylor-Skinner speaks with bestselling author Lynne Olson about her powerful new book, The Sisterhood of Ravensbrück. The conversation unearths the little-known history of French women—many from the resistance—who were captured and sent to Ravensbrück, the Nazis' only all-female concentration camp. Though they faced starvation, disease, forced labor, and the constant threat of execution, these women refused to surrender their dignity—or their purpose. They built a covert network inside the camp, shared banned news, sabotaged Nazi efforts, and supported one another through quiet but unwavering acts of resistance. Olson's research and storytelling illuminate the strength of ordinary women in extraordinary circumstances—and how their defiance, though often silent, continues to echo today. This episode is a tribute to their memory, their courage, and a timely reminder that resistance takes many forms—and every act counts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ahead of the most important football match in the history of Palestine's national team, on the cusp of potential qualification for the 2026 World Cup, the brothers discuss with Bassil Mikdadi, Palestinian journalist and creator of footballpalestine.com, the impact of the ongoing Gaza genocide as well as the deeper context of Palestine national team's rich journey over many decades, its struggle to assert Palestinian national unity in the face of Israel's occupation, blockade and policy of fragmentation. We also discuss the grassroots solidarity with Palestinians across the football world and the campaign to kick Israel's national football team out of FIFA, which, along with the European association UEFA shamefully continues to allow it to play official matches during the genocide despite immediately suspending Russia after its Ukraine invasion. Finally, we discuss the role of media and the silence/complicity of all too many football journalists in covering Israeli atrocities and the intimidation of players when it comes to showing solidarity. Send us a textThere is power in preserving the rich, diverse history and culture of LGBTQIA+ people, across generations and backgrounds, promoting creativity, collaboration, and community among queer people, organizations, and allies. Especially in this particular cultural moment, when the lives and stories of our queer community are being targeted and silenced more than ever before, we need to lift up and celebrate the institutions whose mission it is to collect, preserve, and share those stories and histories widely and proudly. Special Guest: Robert KestenRobert Kesten, Human Rights Advocate, is Executive Director of Stonewall National Museum Archives & Library, one of the world's largest and most significant institutions of its kind, celebrating 50+ years of preserving history and culture in the face of prejudice and hate. Kesten's human rights advocacy has taken many forms, including writing and producing an award winning documentary on the Holocaust at Concentration Camps in Poland, working on the Ghanaian Constitution, coordinating and producing events leading to Ukrainian independence, producing events for the first AIDS day treatment center in the nation, pushing for the decriminalization of homosexuality in Ukraine, challenging book banning, LGBTQIA+ inclusion in schools and navigating anti-LGBTQ sentiments. Kesten also worked on the West Bank during the Intifada and was brought into Egypt and Tunisia during the Arab Spring to try and establish human rights cities. Links from the Show:https://stonewall-museum.org/ https://www.inquirer.com/news/philadelphia/stonewall-queer-history-exhibit-drexel-20240407.html https://www.miamiherald.com/opinion/op-ed/article296353869.html https://washingtonpress.com/author/robertkesten/https://sfbwmag.com/human-rights-leaders-honored-during-international-human-rights-symposium-at-florida-atlantic-university/ https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/opinion/columns/your-voice/2023/04/14/lets-act-to-ensure-lgbtqia-are-safe-and-valued-in-florida-schools/70110517007/ Join Mama Dragons here: www.mamadragons.org In the Den is made possible by generous donors like you.
