One of the greatest needs our communities have is ministries to families with children who have special needs. What should a church be doing to reach this great need? Well today we are welcoming Marie Kuck from Nathaniel's Hope to the podcast. You are going to love Marie and the great insight she brings to this important ministry need. Marie Kuck is an ordained minister who previously served more than 10 years in youth ministry with churches in Chicago, Minneapolis and Orlando. As the Executive Director of Nathaniel's Hope, she oversees the full-time ministry staff and hundreds of volunteers from throughout the country. Marie passionately advocates and trains churches how to practically welcome and include those with disabilities to their congregations. She is former co-host of the “Today's Family” TV show and has taught in the Department of Communications at North Central University. Is there purpose for the pain and loss we experience? That's been a question that Marie Kuck has grappled with throughout her life. As the mother of a special needs child, she has lived face to face and heart to heart with the challenges of disability. She's been forced to ask tough questions, like how do you process grief, while holding on to hope? And how can God take heartache and work it for good? If you struggled with these questions, Marie's story will help you believe that hope lives, even in the shadow of grief.

Special Needs families frequently suffer isolation. Nathaniel's Hope trains churches to provide respite care. Volunteers learn to do crafts and play games with the children for 3-hour blocks of time. "There’s no better cup of cold water you can give to a family impacted by disability than a break," says NH and Buddy Break co-founder Marie Kuck. It starts, she says, with having a willing heart. "Tear down those walls and build friendships." Air1's Monika Kelly reports.

Today on the podcast, Sean shares an excerpt of Marie Kuck‘s session at the Preteen Leaders Conference. Marie discusses how the churches should be opening to families that have preteens with special needs. Parents are struggling to keep their families together, marriages together during this journey with a special need preteen or child. When the church is not prepared to except a special need child, they are making that family question who will except their son or daughter. If the church isn’t even willing, then who will except my child. When kids with special needs start getting into those preteen years the differences between them and the other preteens become more apparent. You may not have the training but if you have a willing heart and are open to allow God to use you, you will be able to make a big difference in a family’s life. Your first decision will be to determine if you are going to be tolerant or intentional when dealing with preteens with special needs. Be intentional in your ministry and cast out your nets to those that are in need. Make your ministry an inviting are for a preteen with special needs and their family.
