Mads Würtz Schmidt has national titles, world titles, and World Tour pro wins but going into 2025 he's taken his skillset to gravel off-road to gravel. He's already racking up wins taking two UCI wins, the prestigious Traka 200 title, and now he's here on North American soil to try his hand at Unbound. Mads and I met up two days shy of the boiling hot Gravel Locos for this face to face conversation. Today, I'm chatting with Stuart Winter-Tear about AI product management. We're getting into the nitty-gritty of what it takes to build and launch LLM-powered products for the commercial market that actually produce value. Among other things in this rich conversation, Stuart surprised me with the level of importance he believes UX has in making LLM-powered products successful, even for technical audiences. After spending significant time on the forefront of AI's breakthroughs, Stuart believes many of the products we're seeing today are the result of FOMO above all else. He shares a belief that I've emphasized time and time again on the podcast–product is about the problem, not the solution. This design philosophy has informed Staurt's 20-plus year-long career, and it is pivotal to understanding how to best use AI to build products that meet users' needs. Highlights/ Skip to Why Stuart was asked to speak to the House of Lords about AI (2:04) The LLM-powered products has Stuart been building recently (4:20) Finding product-market fit with AI products (7:44) Lessons Stuart has learned over the past two years working with LLM-power products (10:54) Figuring out how to build user trust in your AI products (14:40) The differences between being a digital product manager vs. AI product manager (18:13) Who is best suited for an AI product management role (25:42) Why Stuart thinks user experience matters greatly with AI products (32:18) The formula needed to create a business-viable AI product (38:22) Stuart describes the skills and roles he thinks are essential in an AI product team and who he brings on first (50:53) Conversations that need to be had with academics and data scientists when building AI-powered products (54:04) Final thoughts from Stuart and where you can find more from him (58:07) Quotes from Today's Episode “I think that the core dream with GenAI is getting data out of IT hands and back to the business. Finding a way to overlay all this disparate, unstructured data and [translate it] to the human language is revolutionary. We're finding industries that you would think were more conservative (i.e. medical, legal, etc.) are probably the most interested because of the large volumes of unstructured data they have to deal with. People wouldn't expect large language models to be used for fact-checking… they're actually very powerful, especially if you can have your own proprietary data or pipelines. Same with security–although large language models introduce a terrifying amount of security problems, they can also be used in reverse to augment security. There's a lovely contradiction with this technology that I do enjoy.” - Stuart Winter-Tear (5:58) “[LLM-powered products] gave me the wow factor, and I think that's part of what's caused the problem. If we focus on technology, we build more technology, but if we focus on business and customers, we're probably going to end up with more business and customers. This is why we end up with so many products that are effectively solutions in search of problems. We're in this rush and [these products] are [based on] FOMO. We're leaving behind what we understood about [building] products—as if [an LLM-powered product] is a special piece of technology. It's not. It's another piece of technology. [Designers] should look at this technology from the prism of the business and from the prism of the problem. We love to solutionize, but is the problem the problem? What's the context of the problem? What's the problem under the problem? Is this problem worth solving, and is GenAI a desirable way to solve it? We're putting the cart before the horse.” - Stuart Winter-Tear (11:11) “[LLM-powered products] feel most amazing when you're not a domain expert in whatever you're using it for. I'll give you an example: I'm terrible at coding. When I got my hands on Cursor, I felt like a superhero. It was unbelievable what I could build. Although [LLM products] look most amazing in the hands of non-experts, it's actually most powerful in the hands of experts who do understand the domain they're using this technology. Perhaps I want to do a product strategy, so I ask [the product] for some assistance, and it can get me 70% of the way there. [LLM products] are great as a jumping off point… but ultimately [they are] only powerful because I have certain domain expertise.” - Stuart Winter-Tear (13:01) “We're so used to the digital paradigm. The deterministic nature of you put in X, you get out Y; it's the same every time. Probabilistic changes every time. There is a huge difference between what results you might be getting in the lab compared to what happens in the real world. You effectively find yourself building [AI products] live, and in order to do that, you need good communities and good feedback available to you. You need these fast feedback loops. From a pure product management perspective, we used to just have the [engineering] timeline… Now, we have [the data research timeline]. If you're dealing with cutting-edge products, you've got these two timelines that you're trying to put together, and the data research one is very unpredictable. It's the nature of research. We don't necessarily know when we're going to get to where we want to be.” - Stuart Winter-Tear (22:25) “I believe that UX will become the #1 priority for large language model products. I firmly believe whoever wins in UX will win in this large language model product world. I'm against fully autonomous agents without human intervention for knowledge work. We need that human in the loop. What was the intent of the user? How do we get that right push back from the large language model to understand even the level of the person that they're dealing with? These are fundamental UX problems that are going to push UX to the forefront… This is going to be on UX to educate the user, to be able to inject the user in at the right time to be able to make this stuff work. The UX folk who do figure this out are going to create the breakthrough and create the mass adoption.” - Stuart Winter-Tear (33:42)

“If people were paid according to how hard they work, the richest people on earth would be the ones digging ditches with a shovel in the hot summertime.”That's what my mother told me when I was a boy. When she saw the puzzled look on my face, she continued.“People who make a lot of money are paid according to the weight of the responsibility they carry and the quality of the decisions they make.”Second only to grief, the weight of responsibility is the heaviest burden that a person can carry. Compared to those, a shovel full of dirt feels as light as feathers on a windy day. When forced to choose between two evils, it brings a good person no joy to choose the lesser evil. Fewer people will be hurt, but the pain those people feel will be real.A person who is not wounded by the pain they cause others is a sociopath.Authority is power, and power is attractive. Tear away the tinsel. Scrape away the glitter and you will see that authority is just a fancy costume. You wear it when you are about to cause someone pain.Every good person in authority has scars on their heart, memories of the pain they know they have caused others.Sociopaths don't care about the pain of others. They crave authority because they are weak, and the fancy costume lets them pretend they are strong.Things get ugly when a sociopath has power.“In the alchemy of man's soul almost all noble attributes – courage, honor, love, hope, faith, duty, loyalty, etc. – can be transmuted into ruthlessness. Compassion alone stands apart from the continuous traffic between good and evil proceeding within us. Compassion is the antitoxin of the soul: where there is compassion even the most poisonous impulses remain relatively harmless.”– Eric Hoffer, “Reflections on the Human Condition” (1973)A person in authority who lacks compassion is a very small person wearing a badge. As a young man, I admired cleverness. But I have lived enough years and cried enough tears that now I see the world differently. Today, I admire goodness. This shift in perspective helped me understand what Viktor Frankl wrote in his book, “Man's Search for Meaning.”“Freedom is only part of the story and half of the truth… In fact, freedom is in danger of degenerating into mere arbitrariness unless it is lived in terms of responsibleness. That is why I recommend that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast.”Viktor Frankl was a medical doctor, a psychologist, and a survivor of the holocaust. He was imprisoned in four different concentration camps: Theresienstadt, Auschwitz where his mother was murdered, Dachau, and then Türkheim.Viktor Frankl believed in freedom, but he refused to see it as a license to do whatever you want. To him, freedom without responsibility was an idiotic idea.Isabella Bird was a well-educated woman who left Victorian England to explore the world in 1854.When she arrived in the United States in 1873, she bought a horse and rode alone more than 800 miles to Colorado. In her book, “A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains,” (1879), Isabella wrote,“In America the almighty dollar is the true divinity, and its worship is universal. ‘Smartness' is the quality thought most of. The boy who ‘gets on' by cheating at his lessons is praised for being a ‘smart boy,' and his satisfied parents foretell that he will make a ‘great man.'”“A man who overreaches his neighbor, but who does it so cleverly that the law cannot take hold of him, wins an envied reputation as a ‘smart man,' and stories of this species of ‘smartness' are told admiringly...
One book—with footnotes—changed everything. In this bold, eye-opening episode, Mark Casto uncovers how the Scofield Reference Bible reshaped Christian theology, redefined eschatology, and handed the Church a counterfeit narrative rooted in fear and politics. From the rise of dispensationalism to the dangerous marriage between Christian Zionism and geopolitical power, this episode tears down what never should've been built—and calls Kingdom builders to take their place in God's victorious plan. If you've ever felt something was off in how the modern church talks about the end times, Israel, or your purpose in the world—this is the episode you've been waiting for.
Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every single day. We are in the Gospel of Mark. Visit the website and purchase the Scripture Journal for this study so that you can follow along with us. I want to give a shout-out today to Robert Jassey from Double Springs, AL. Thank you for being a monthly partner in Project23 and helping us share the Gospel with millions as we work our way through the entire Bible. Today, we're reading Mark 2:1-5: And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” — Mark 2:1-5 The room was packed. People crowding every inch, spilling out the door. But that didn't stop these four men. They showed up carrying a friend who couldn't walk—and when the door was blocked, they didn't turn around. They climbed the roof. Tore it open. Lowered him down right in front of Jesus. Because real faith doesn't wait for perfect conditions. It finds a way. Jesus saw it. He didn't just see a paralyzed man—He saw their faith. Not faith spoken. Faith acted out. Faith with sweat on its forehead and dirt under its fingernails. Faith that refuses to quit until it collides with Jesus. And what does Jesus do? He says something unexpected: "Son, your sins are forgiven." Before He heals the body, He heals the soul. Because that's how Jesus works—He goes after the real issue first. If you're waiting for the “right time” to come to Jesus, stop. If you're waiting for your "life to get cleaned up before you act," stop. Faith tears the roof off whatever stands between you and Jesus. Right now, take action and tear off your roof by praying this simple prayer with me, and watch as Jesus provides you with the real healing you need. Jesus, I don't know all the right steps to take. But I know this prayer is a step in the process. Receive this prayer as my step of faith in you. I am trusting that you will provide me with the healing I really need. Amen. If you prayed this prayer with me, and this is the first time you've taken this step, let me know in the comments by typing: "I choose Jesus!" #FaithInAction, #RoofTearingFaith, #SoulHealing ASK THIS: What's one "crowd" standing in the way of you getting closer to Jesus? How does the boldness of these four men challenge your view of faith? Where have you been waiting for perfect conditions instead of taking action? Are you seeking Jesus for surface needs—or for soul-deep healing? DO THIS: Identify one excuse you've been using to stay stuck spiritually. Name it. Then, today—take one bold, imperfect step toward Jesus anyway. PRAY THIS: Jesus, break down anything that stands between me and you. Give me a faith that's not afraid to rip the roof off if that's what it takes. Amen. PLAY THIS: Same God.
