Jelly beans sent to space with astronauts, I am not joking.  At this point I stumbled onto a quote about his wife, Nancy Reagan, and let me just say...America may have called her the First Lady, but Hollywood had a slightly different title for her. It was written and directed by Ava Maria Safai and we sat down together over zoom and discussed her film. Foreigner - In the age of low-rise jeans and flip phones, a Persian teen trying to fit in with her new Canadian clique dyes her hair blonde -- and invites a monstrous force into her life.I will be sure to keep everyone posted for its release sometime next year, but until then, enjoy this great episode. Ava was a lot of fun to talk to and we discuss tv and other films as well.Persian Julep – Apricot Rose JulepIngredients1/2 oz honey rose simple syrup**6 large mint leaves2 dashes rose water optional1.5 oz bourbon1/2 oz Giffard's apricot liqueurGarnish: sprig of mint, dried apricots, fresh, organic, food-safe rose petalsInstructionsAdd the simple syrup and rose water to the bottom of a mixing glass. Tear the mint leaves in half and drop them into the syrup. Muddle lightly.Add the apricot liqueur and bourbon. Fill with ice and stir until chilled and well-combined, about 30 seconds.Strain into a julep cup filled with cracked or crushed ice and garnish with a fresh mint sprig and some dried apricots.For the Rose-Honey Simple:Ingredients2 tablespoons dried rose buds1 cup water3/4 cup honeyDirectionsBrew the rose buds in boiling water for 8 minutes like you would a tea (I used my teapot).Strain 1/2 cup of the tea into a glass measuring cup.While still hot, add 3/4 cup honey and stir well to combine.Let cool completely and keep in the fridge.It will keep for a couple of weeks, and a little longer if you add a bit of vodka to it before storing it. You can drink the remaining tea on its own, or make some of it into a rose simple syrup by adding 1/2 cup sugar to it.Persian DelightIngredients60 ml Tanqueray Malacca Gin40 ml Salted Pistachio and Cardamom Orgeat*30 ml Acid-adjusted Orange Juice**10-15 drops Persian Saffron and Persian Rose tincture***2 dashes Angostura orange bitterDirectionsMix all the ingredients (except for the Saffron and Persian Rose Tincture) together and add them to 50 ml 2% milk, let it sit for 24 hours and filter it using cheese cloth. Weigh the final liquid and dilute it with 30% water.Pour drink into a glass and add 10-15 drops of Saffron and Persian Rose Tincture.Garnish with a rose petal, barberry, and/or edible gold leaf.This drink can be scaled up to make many servings at the same time. Just multiply this recipe by as many guests as you are hosting. The time spent resting in milk doesn't change based on volume.*Salted Pistachio and Cardamom Orgeat: Add 100 salted pistachios and 3 cardamom pods to 250 ml hot water in a sealed container and let it sit for 24 hours. Using blender blend it well and run it through cheese cloth. Squeeze the cheese cloth to maximize yield. Weigh the final liquid and add equal amount of sugar. Stir to dissolve the sugar.**Acid-adjusted Orange Juice: Add 4g citric acid to every 96g orange juice.***Persian Saffron and Persian Rose Tincture: Combine 100ml of Tanqueray Malacca Gin with two pinches of saffron and one pinch of dehydrated rose petal. So, take a breath, open your heart to today's readings, and join the global DRB family as we draw near to God together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Terror and the Sword—And the Face of God. How sobering it all is, the prophet cries “Tear, tear, tear”—the sound of the eagle's warning. And again, “A sword, a sword, a sword,” proclaims Ezekiel, as judgment comes upon the world's rebellion against God. This is a hard and honest picture—one in which the world's great rebellion exhausts itself in its own fury, and where God, in justice, brings the rebellion to an end. The prophets give us this clear message: a world bent on violence, on idolatry, on turning from the Lord, must one day face a reckoning. But before we despair over the terror and the sword and the brokenness described by the prophets, the psalmist speaks: “The righteous Lord loves justice. The virtuous will see his face.” God desires a relationship, face to face. He's not a God intent on destruction, but a God intent on drawing his people close to himself. Yet, our violence, pride, and idolatry have separated us from him—have blinded us to his face. In love and in justice, God has made a way for us to meet him as we are and as he is. When the Lamb breaks the seventh seal, all heaven falls silent. There's awe in the recognition of the coming terrors, yes, but there's also an invitation: to trust in the Lord for protection. The psalmist asks, “Why do you say to me, fly like a bird to the mountains for safety?” Our true place of refuge is not in fleeing from the world's danger, but in flying to Christ himself—to Calvary, “the mountain of safety.” It's there that the Lamb of God absorbed all violence and judgment at the hands of his rebellious creation. There, he did not strike out in vengeance, but stretched out his hands in forgiveness. By his self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love, he extinguished the power of death and the grave and began making all things new. So we are invited to remain in awe, to stand in silence at the wonder of the Lamb's sacrifice—the one who offered himself for the world. God's dream is not endless destruction, but a world restored, humanity awakened to the fullness of life and shalom, reconciled and made new. Jesus has come to accomplish this: God's dream for you, and for all creation, will not fail. Paul saw the day when Christ is “all and in all”—he saw the dream come to completion. While the violence and darkness around us may be easy to see, God's dream requires our hearts to be trained in faith: to see what God sees, to believe what God has done, and to press forward into his promise. Let us fix our eyes on Christ, training our souls to know God face to face and to know his joy. Let us receive his peace, his joy, his forgiveness—and let us become ambassadors of this radically reconciling love. That's a prayer I have for my own soul. That's a prayer for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's a prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Gracious and everlasting God, you have brought us through the shadow of night into the promise of a new day. You go before us with your mercy, sustain us by your grace and keep us from wandering paths of fear or pride. Let every word we speak and every step we take be formed by the goodness of Christ. O Lord, gather your people far and near. May every tribe and tongue come to know your peace. Let justice roll like a river and healing flow where there has been division. Pour out your spirit upon all flesh and bring us closer to the day when your kingdom comes in fullness through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. And now, as our Lord has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Support our mission to teach every verse of the Bible on video over the next 23 years. Read more about it here: PROJECT23 Our text today is Judges 2:1-3: "Now the angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, 'I brought you up from Egypt and brought you into the land that I swore to give to your fathers. I said, "I will never break my covenant with you, and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall break down their altars." But you have not obeyed my voice. What is this you have done? So now I say, I will not drive them out before you, but they shall become thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.'"— Judges 2:1-3 Before judgment falls, God speaks. Judges 2 opens with the angel of the Lord delivering a direct confrontation. It's not gentle. It's not subtle. It's the voice of God reminding His people what He's done—and what they've failed to do. “I brought you out… I gave you this land… I made a covenant…” But then: “You have not obeyed my voice.” This is what makes God's discipline just. He doesn't strike first—He speaks first to ensure we see the connection. He calls us back before the consequences come down. Israel had compromised. They'd made peace with pagan people and their altars instead of tearing them down. They tried to combine obedience with convenient opportunities. But God doesn't bless half-obedience. He confronts it. And now, He announces the result: “They shall become thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.” Simply put: he gives them over to the gods they want and allows their consequences to teach. God is patient, but not passive. He won't force us to obey, but he will let us feel the cost of ignoring him. And sometimes, the thorns in our lives are the result of altars we refused to tear down. What compromise have you let linger? What altar have you left standing? The warning is abundant. The confrontation is just. The invitation still stands. Return. Obey. Tear down what doesn't belong. Do you need to tear something down? Do so, and avoid the consequences and the need to hear God's just voice. ASK THIS: What's one clear instruction from God I've delayed or avoided? Have I made peace with anything God told me to destroy? What “thorns” am I experiencing because of disobedience? What altar needs to be torn down in my life today? DO THIS: Identify one compromise you've tolerated—and take specific action today to remove it from your life. PRAY THIS: God, thank You for speaking before You discipline. Help me hear Your voice and respond with immediate obedience. Amen PLAY THIS: "Holy Spirit."

Kyle Tucker was in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 15, playing in an unforgettable MLB All-Star Game. Just over a month later, Tucker finds himself headed to the bench amidst a cacophony of boos. In a world awash with disinformation and fear-based politics, what cuts through the noise isn't perfection; it's authenticity. As Erin Reed, a trailblazing journalist and trans rights advocate, puts it: the most effective leaders and allies are the ones who show up with sincerity, values, and courage. Reed knows this from experience. Alongside her wife, Montana state legislator Zooey Zephyr, they've faced the harshest forms of political repression, from being silenced in state chambers to watching harmful laws passed in the name of "protecting" sports or children. And yet, their fight continues, fueled by love, clarity, and hope. So how can you support the trans community in meaningful ways? Stand Firm in Your Values – Democratic Party leaders especially shouldn't be “Republican-lite” or speak through the filter of 12 consultants. Speak from the heart, like Kentucky's Andy Beshear, who stood up for trans rights and still won big in a deep red state. Educate Yourself and Others – Learn the real facts. Trans athletes aren't “cheating.” They're barely even represented in elite sports. Medical care for trans youth isn't a free-for-all;  it's cautious, professional, and consent-driven. And no, no one is performing surgeries in school cafeterias.  Be Visible. Be Vocal. – When institutions cave to pressure and erase diversity programs, allies must speak up. Trans people aren't always in the room, but you might be. Build Solidarity – Globally and locally. Anti-trans disinformation spreads across borders. So should our support. Reach out to advocate groups abroad and build an international coalition of support and solidarity.  History is watching. As Reed reminds us, this is our civil rights moment.
