BONDED TO GODS LOVE As we read the many stories from the gospels, we find that there is one gospel writer, the apostle John, who stands out as the one who was bonded to the love of Jesus from the very beginning. His writings emphasize the love of God more than any other Biblical writings. John wrote the last five books of the Bible, which included his gospel and then his three epistles and then the Book of Revelation. In his own gospel he even refers to himself as ‘the disciple that Jesus loved'. He was not being proud in saying this - it was simply a revelation of the love of God through Jesus for all of humanity, and so he qualified for that. And in John's gospel in the story of the last supper when Jesus said that one of them would betray him all the disciples looked at Jesus and said one after another 'Is it I Lord?' But John was not feeling self-conscious or guilty as perhaps the others did and so he simply said ‘Who is it Lord?' I'm reading today from the first epistle of John which is totally about the love of God that bonds us to God and to one another. 1John 3:1. Think about how wonderful is the love that has been lavished upon us by the Father, calling us his very own sons and daughters. But realize that the world does not understand us for who we really are, because it does not understand Jesus for who he really is. 2. So, we are now true sons and daughters of God my beloved, and it is not quite clear to us as to what we shall ultimately be like. All we can know is that when he returns we will be like he is, because we will see him for who he really is. 3. And all those who keep this hope and expectation alive will purify the state of their hearts and minds, just as Jesus did. 7. My dear children don't be deceived by anybody about this; whoever is living a life that shows that they are in harmony with Jesus, is living in the same harmony with the Father as Jesus is. 9. Whoever knows that they are part of God's very life, as his child, will not oppose God outright, because he is born of the same seed, and the essence of God's life is his life. So he cannot live in hostile contradiction to him because he is part of him. 10. This is how you are going to be able see the difference between those who really are bonded to God as their Father, and those who are still bonded to darkness, in the same way. Whoever doesn't live a truthful and upright life or doesn't show love and care and kindness towards others is not bonded with God. 11. And God has been saying to us from the beginning that we must love one another. John knew how to avoid being bonded to darkness by not letting his mind and heart live in past regrets, or fear of the future, or hopelessness, or resentment, or hostility to others. John knew how to remain bonded to God in his lovingkindness, his expectation of God's goodness and the power of his might, living in peace and joy and the love of others. I believe that John would have begun each day by thinking about the love that God had for him, and that his last thoughts at night would have been about the love that God had for him. He knew this was the essence of God's nature and so he wrote ‘We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them'. And He would have known and understood completely that God had always been the same – unchanging in his love. What does God want back from us? He wants the circle of his love to come from us back round to him. Doesn't he want obedience? Yes – but that same apostle John who wrote about God's love for us said that if we love God, we will keep his commandments – and that doesn't just mean the Ten Commandments, it means that when we know what he wants us to do we will do it. He said that both in his gospel and in his epistles. Loving God is our will power – rejecting God's love is our won't power, so completing the circle of God's love back to him comes first and everything else comes after that. So how do we love a God that we cannot see? That is the work of the Holy Spirit that has been given to us by God and who sheds and spreads God's love into our hearts so that we will believe it and feel it - it all starts with God. But before we can believe in God's love for us we need to know it is true and we can know it as a truth because the word of God tells us that – as we have seen in every line of what has been said today. Knowing you are loved by God and believing you are loved by God is the most deep and profound spiritual thing you can do because our spirit is made up of our mind that knows and our heart that believes. What we know as truth with our mind we will believe with faith in our heart. Our body even has a part to play in this because even our brain has been created to help us complete that circle of love back to God that causes us to know and believe his love for us and to do the things that show we love him back. We were created with a left brain and a right brain and those two parts work together so that we can make balanced decisions in our life. Our left brain is in charge of organizing and ordering and giving our thoughts structure but our right brain is more spontaneous and random and creative and colourful. It is jumping into what we want to do rather than calculating what we ought to do. That means that the left brain has to reorder the chaos of the right brain and when that balance anchors our soul, we can do very creative and inspiring things with enthusiasm and faith but it's based on love and truth and order. That is why it is good to sit quietly and gratefully acknowledge God's presence with us and focus our minds on his powerful work on our behalf in the world of the unseen. That is what faith is – believing that God is at work in our lives for our good. Paul wrote to us about being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6). Paul went on to say that It is God working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.(Philippians 2:13). And in the next chapter Paul says that God is able to subdue all thning to himself. It couldn't be any clearer than that. But if we don't focus on that and think it and believe it, we are letting the right brain chaos run our lives. That process is a picture of what happened in the very beginning of the creation of the universe in Genesis Chapter one. The Bible says that there was darkness on the face of the deep (the Abyss) and that it was without form and void (chaos). The Spirit of God hovered above that disorder and the word of truth – the logos of God, spoke and said ‘let there be light'. And then the mighty creative work of God was put into action. That act of creation was an act of God's love for us, and that creative love in action is what happens when we sit and contemplate the love of God and give it back to him with a thank you. That is when we become creatively changed into the new creation of his likeness and we can do the creative loving of others. This is what waiting on God and contemplation is all about - nothing more nothing less – it is not a waste of time – it is not passive – it is actively embodying God's love into the world around us. Let us wait on God and contemplate on actively embodying God's love to us and into the world around us. Waiting on God is not a waste of time – it is not passive – it is active - and doing this takes practice - in consciously sitting in the presence of God and knowing that he is doing the mysterious work. Driving a car takes practice and you dont have to understand how an internal combustion engine works – it's a bit mysterious to me. But I know I have to turn the ignition on, put the car into gear and then drive from A to B – and that last part takes the most practice – but we learn and get our P plates and our licence. We become part of the car and it becomes part of us – which is like being one with God who is directing our lives in faith. The Bible says that if we get off track we will hear a voice behind us saying ‘this is the way walk ye in it' (Isaiah x.x). In a car we look at Google maps and hear it say ‘turn right at the next round about then drive 500 Metres then turn left. And if we get that wrong it keeps talking and tells us to go to the next roundabout and come back to the first roundabout and start from there ‘This is the way - drive ye in it'. That takes faith in our google maps program. Practice sitting with God and he will direct your path and grow your faith and renew your mind - and truth and love will run your life, not chaos and uncertainty.

Join us for a heart-warming exploration of how stained glass becomes the perfect metaphor for our spiritual lives.Joanne Sharp takes us on her journey from Pinterest rabbit holes to divine inspiration, discovering that stained glass—unlike any other art form—requires light to pass through it to achieve its full beauty. When one piece of glass cracks or breaks, the surrounding pieces hold it in place. Similarly, even in our darkest moments, our sisters in Christ alongside us provide strength, support, and an unbreakable connection to the source of light. From Genesis where God first created light to Revelation where His radiance eliminates the need for sun or lamps, Joanne guides us through Scripture's consistent message of divine illumination. Jesus declared Himself the light, then called us to be light-bearers too. Your daughter's transformation into a young woman is designed by God. But as a dad, stepping back to protect her can be tough when all you want is to reconnect like you did when she was younger. In this episode, Jay Heck, Rob Porter, and Jeff Zaugg unpack the powerful "Chrysalis Analogy" and reveal how God uses this transition to draw you closer to Him while strengthening your relationship with your kids. Key Takeaway Being a supportive protector instead of forcing connection as your daughter ages will build intimacy and make both of your lives easier. Your daughter's view of men will be shaped by how safe and loved she feels with you as her father. Just like a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis, your daughter's spiritual, physical, and hormonal transformation requires you to stand back and trust God's design. Your thoughts and words hold immense power. Choose to speak vision and blessings over your daughter's life. Jay Heck & Rob Porter Jay Heck is the founder and director of Being Songs, a ministry helping men discover that authentic, fearless, God-designed manhood begins by being a son. He and his wife, Heather, have two young adult children. Rob Porter lives in New Zealand with his wife and two kids. He leads Let's Keep Rising, a ministry that crafts adventures, events, and resources that meet men where they are and help them experience restoration in the most critical relationships they have, beginning with God Key Quotes 21:15 - "I recall you mentioning, Jay, I get to become more of a son through my daughter. So the thing that sticks out to me is, what are the messages my daughter is receiving from me? Jay, I think you laid out this idea of air, food and water. Attention being the air, affection being the food, and affirmation being the water. And what I'm really feeling, where I'm maturing, is my awareness in a given situation. So, that when I'm feeling stressed or frustrated or whatever my emotions are stirring, that I'm able to separate that from coming out to my child. That I'm able to be aware of what's the message that they're receiving from me." 24:51 - "One of the things that I was guilty of, and this was my heart's response or reaction to fear, that I don't know what I'm doing. So, when I can't make sense of it, I like to put a label on it. My daughter is difficult, or she's hard-headed. I mean, people joke about this stuff all the time, but when you really begin to think about it, you are speaking and you are affirming a reality. You're speaking something into existence. Like if I, in my anger, I can say, my daughter's being so difficult today. And the next day I say the same thing. And then after three days, I'm like, my daughter is difficult. Like it grows, the story begins to be more comprehensive. I don't know what to do with my daughter. Wow, is that really the story or is it you just don't know what to do in this instant with her? You don't know how to love her. And so we can just say these curses all the time." Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
Year C – Second Sunday in Lent – March 16, 2025 Pastor Megan Floyd Luke 13:31-35 Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18 Grace and peace to you from God, who is faithful and true, and from Jesus Christ, our Mother hen, who fiercely protects and provides for us. Amen. *** Have you ever been chased by an angry chicken? I have not… the only animals I grew up around were dogs and cats, and the occasional fish… so I do not have much experience with chickens. And because of my lack of experience, I used to miss much of the nuance of this passage from Luke… I didn't quite understand the intensity of the creature to which Jesus compares himself. I mean… it's a chicken. Not exactly scary, right? Chickens are famous for being… well… chicken… they're scared of everything! Well… so then… one of my friends who raises chickens set me right. Yes… they are scared of everything… until you threaten their babies. A mother hen is gentle and nurturing to her brood. She provides for them, and gathers them under her feathers, sheltering them and keeping them warm. But when her babies are in danger, she will not hesitate to go after the threat with fierceness and tenacity. She will go to great lengths to protect her vulnerable baby chicks… even if it costs her… her life. *** God… as a fierce Mother hen… it's a surprisingly beautiful way to understand who God is in Jesus… but not exactly what the early disciples really hoped for… or expected in a messiah. …and I think it's still that way for many people today. God's people had long awaited a conquering hero… a king who would overthrow the empire and crush those who were crushing them. And instead… we got Jesus. Not a brave warrior, but a poor, gentle Rabbi who insisted on hanging out with all the wrong people. Jesus was not a powerful ruler who would destroy our enemies… but a suffering messiah who calls upon us to love them. We think the strongman is the better deal… we are so conditioned to believe that the powerful and brash leader is the one who will save us… But only the one who was crucified on the cross …has the power to save. Jesus knew the forces of the empire were against him… he knew that his mission would end in death. But just like a Mother hen, Jesus was willing to face death – even death on a cross – in order to protect us… protect us from ourselves and our own sin… and provide for us… provide the salvation that can only come from God. Jesus was willing to face death… because Jesus is God, and God promised long before… that we would always be God's beloved children… and God is faithful to God's promises. God made this covenant with our ancestors, Abram and Sarai… we are God's people… *** Even Abram doubted though… the scene we read today from Genesis describes one such moment of doubt. Abram laments because the promised future has not yet come to pass, but God reassures him… and Abram believes. But God takes this even further… God instructs Abram to bring animals for a ritual, and cut them in half, and lay them out, each side facing the other. And then God… passed through between the cut animals… to secure the covenant. You've heard the expression… to “cut a covenant” or “cut a deal” …yes? …this is where it comes from. The one who passes through demonstrates that they will fulfill their promise, and if they falter… then let happen to them what has happened to these animals. God promised to Abram and Sarai that they would be the ancestors to a great multitude of people… and that they would be God's children forever… under God's care and provision. And so, God passed through those animals to secure the promise for Abram, and to assure him that God will remain faithful to God's promises… even unto death. God claimed us as God's own, and laid foundations of love and trust… faithfulness and provision. And from the very beginning… God showed us what God was willing to do for us, to nurture and build this mutual relationship… Humans are the ones who falter and fall away… humans have not always held up our end of the agreement… but not God… God remains true. *** And so… roughly two thousand years after cutting that covenant with Abram… Jesus… who is God… knew where his mission would take him… he knew Herod was against him… Maybe the Pharisees were genuine in their attempt to warn him… or… maybe they were taunting him… hoping he would abandon his disciples and his mission, and run and hide… …maybe they were calling him a chicken. So, Jesus, in turn… calls Herod a fox. That's not a compliment. The fox is the notorious enemy of the chicken – and not just because he's a predator. My friend who taught me about chickens, also taught me about foxes… A fox doesn't just kill when he's hungry. A fox will savage an entire hen house, killing indiscriminately and leaving the bodies behind. In calling Herod a fox, Jesus names Herod as a danger to everyone, including the Pharisees before him. But a hen… a Mother hen, when faced with a threat to her babies… never leaves her post. He tells the Pharisees that he's casting out demons and healing the sick… nothing will deter him from his mission. Jesus is resolute …even knowing that the path leads through death, he does not waver… because he also knows… that on the third day… the work will be complete. On the third day…sin and death will be defeated… and Love and mercy will prevail. We may still falter in our faithfulness to God… but God does not. God remains faithful and true to us, and through Jesus' death and resurrection, God has redeemed us… once and for all. Through Jesus' death and resurrection… we are saved… because Jesus gave his life to protect us… *** God in Jesus… is a fierce Mother. …and yet, tender and merciful, and full of love… longing to gather us under her wing… even though some are unwilling. God in Jesus is not an abstract idea of a god who controls the world through puppet strings, or teases us around like playthings… Jesus… is God who is near… a living, breathing, loving light in our lives who is worthy of our trust and love… worthy of our devotion… the kind of devotion that changes how you live in this world… …the kind of devotion that bends your heart toward those who are cast out and vulnerable… because they are among the first ones Jesus gathers to himself. Jesus is God… a mothering God, spreading her great wings over us, sheltering all of Creation in her feathers, protecting us… and ultimately giving her life… to save us. *** God has redeemed us… redeemed you… and me… God has given us grace and mercy… God has fulfilled the covenant made with Abram and Sarai… once and for all… and secured our place, for all time… as God's beloved children… And we, who are beloved children …we can trust in the fierce determination of our God to protect us from our sin… …and trust in the shelter of our Lord, always. Amen

We did it OOBTers! We've made it to the last chapters of Leviticus! Let's be honest: Leviticus is the book where most Bible reading plans go to die… but not us! We stuck it out, and these final chapters (24-27) are packed with powerful reminders of God's holiness, His rescue plan, and His desire to walk among us. So good. In this episode, we're breaking it all down: Why honoring God's name matters and what happens when people don't. The concept of Sabbath and Jubilee years—where debts are canceled, slaves are freed, and the land itself gets to rest! (hello, freedom and restoration!) A big if/then moment—God lays out the blessings of obedience and the tough consequences of turning away. But even in the warnings, His mercy shines through! AND THEN, in the final chapter, we see a call to full dedication because everything ultimately belongs to God. Through all of this, we see that these laws aren't just ancient rules—they point straight to Jesus and God's ultimate plan to redeem and restore us. So beautiful. Atheists argue that the God of the Bible isn't a God of love. And technically, they're right! God is a God of absolute righteousness and justice. The ultimate EFFECT of being right and just is love! So then, what is love? Is it a feeling, or a choice? In this podcast we'll look at an argument I had with an annoying atheist (is there any other kind?) that led to the true definition of God's love. We'll also cover:How you can tell if a person is an atheist (or from New York) in 60 secondsHow atheists tacitly admit that they are insaneHow most of us (including Christians) have a wrong definition of loveThe true Biblical definition of loveWhy God is NOT a “God of love”.The first demonstration of love in the Bible (and how it relates to the ULTIMATE show of love)The KJV of 1 Corinthians 13 gives the most accurate definition of love
Receiving and Sharing God's Love: The Secret of St. John the Evangelist The Witness of Love: Learning from St. John the Evangelist Yesterday, as we honored the Feast of St. Stephen, we reflected on his life and martyrdom. The word “martyr” means to witness—offering a total and unwavering testimony of faith. Today, we celebrate another profound witness: St. John the Evangelist. Among the apostles, he alone was not martyred, yet his entire life was a testimony to God's love. Every day, he bore witness to this love, living in its fullness. No wonder he is called the Beloved Disciple. John was present at the pivotal moments of Christ's life—at the Transfiguration, in the Garden of Olives, and at the foot of the Cross, when others had fled. He was also among the first to witness the Resurrection, running ahead of Peter to the empty tomb. The Gospel tells us that when he saw, he believed. The Secrets of St. John's Witness The first key to John's unwavering faith is revealed in his own writings: “Beloved, what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen, what we have touched—that is the Word of Life.” To truly witness Christ, we must encounter Him personally. Have we heard, seen, and touched Jesus in our lives? We cannot bear witness to what we do not know. John teaches us that faith begins with receiving God's love—only then can we share it with others. His letters emphasize that we cannot claim to love God if we do not love one another. The second lesson comes from the moment at the empty tomb. John ran faster than Peter, yet he did not enter first—he waited out of respect. When they both entered, the Gospel tells us that John saw and believed. Faith is nurtured by love, reverence, and humility. Perhaps our own struggles in faith stem from not fully receiving God's love, which alone enables us to love others better. A Story of Transformation A story is told of a man who converted to Catholicism. Before his baptism, a priest asked him some basic questions about the faith. “Where was Jesus born?” the priest asked. The man hesitated. “I'm sorry, Father, I don't know.” “Who was Jesus' foster father?” “Gabriel… or maybe I forgot.” The priest, surprised, questioned whether the man was serious about his faith. But the man responded: “Father, before I chose to become a Catholic, I was a terrible husband and father. I drank heavily, smoked, and was violent toward my family. My children feared me, and my wife suffered under my anger. I tried many times to change, but nothing worked. Then, at a funeral Mass, I heard a homily that touched me deeply. I realized God's love was calling me to transformation. And for the first time, change was not impossible—it was happening within me. So, Father, if you ask me where Jesus was born, I may not know. But I do know this—Jesus is my Savior, because He changed me.” Mary: The Final Secret of John's Faith At the foot of the Cross, Jesus entrusted Mary to John. The Gospel tells us that John took her into his home. This is another secret to his unwavering faith—he walked his journey with Mary. She, who carried the Word made flesh, helps us receive and respond to God's love more perfectly. This Christmas, and every day, may we first receive God's love, so that we may share it with others. We cannot give what we do not have. Listen to this Meditation Media. What a joy it is to bring Christmas and hope to those in need, all over the world, and hear the stories of such great men and women dedicated to this mission work! We had the awesome opportunity to track down and visit with Rev. Ken Harbaum, our dear friend and long-time ministry partner of JMICF and TMM.About Pastor Kenneth HarbaumIn 2008, Pastor Harbaum fulfilled a lifelong goal to establish a means of providing missionaries with practical management services so they can focus on ministry. He established this administrative ministry through Covenant Global Evangelism (CGE). CGE's purpose is to keep missionaries in the field with little concern about how they will keep in contact with their partners and handling resources given for their overseas ministry. After much prayer and confirmation for God, the name of Full Gospel Temple was changed to Covenant of Peace Church on January 1, 2015. The mission and vision of the church remains the same. The name of the church was changed to reflect the covenant of God's peace that we as believers share with our heavenly father.Today, thanks to his friends and partners in ministry, Lightnings of God Ministries still puts an intense effort into fulfilling the call by taking qualified teams into Kenya and conducting seminars for pastors and leaders. The growth of Lightnings of God Ministries has included a Branch Office in Kenya along with local churches under the name of Covenant of Peace Church.Pastor Harbaum is honored to serve on Dr. Mark T. Barclay's President Cabinet for the Righteous Preachers Network.
