Dr. Threet is a Biblical Counselor and Pastor at West Park Baptist in Ozark, AR, and the parent of a special needs child. Often the church doesn't realize one of the largest groups of people who need Jesus are families with special needs children. It's hard for them to attend. It's hard especially for a smaller church to care for special needs children. But on this podcast Dr. Threet helps us understand a willing heart and sensitive culture to people who are different and in need can be as effective as certain programs for these families. We need to learn awareness to communicate and prepare our church families for how to minister and serve these families in need. For more information or to contact Dr. Threat please email us and we'll connect you.You can email us at info@healthychurchpodcast.com orTo find more information about The Healthy Church Podcast go to:http://www.healthychurchpodcast.comor find us on FaceBook! For a video of today's podcast, you can find it on FaceBook or YouTube!

Joni and Friends team member Wilame Leal Silva and his wife Erica Leal were overjoyed to hear they were pregnant with their second child. Then doctors gave a diagnosis that sent them reeling. Their son, they were told, had trisomy 13, a condition likely to end the baby's life soon after birth. Even if Daniel survived, doctors said, he would be severely disabled and not live long. Grieved facing the loss of their son—and pressured to terminate the pregnancy—Wilame and Erica experienced disability in a new way. And while their son—to doctors' amazement—was born without a disability, Wilame and Erica live with lasting deep empathy for families living with disability. Wilame joins the podcast to tell his family's story, and share how God led him into disability ministry. Every person is an image-bearer of the living God, created by Him with inherent value and worth as His creation. This episode is essential for those who are parenting, caring for, and supporting those who are autistic. Remembering that God created autism for His glory enables us as parents to take up the mantle of discipleship in our home. 1 Corinthians 12:9 says, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Tim Lucas, founder and lead pastor of Liquid Church in New Jersey, discusses his church's phenomenal outreaches — and the amazing ways his ministry is reaching lives for Jesus."We named it Liquid because Jesus calls himself the living water," Tim told Daniel. "We believe church should be refreshing." The preacher said he believes "God takes any mess and can turn it into a message of grace," and detailed the amazing ways Liquid Church is serving its community."We've always had a heart for [special needs ministry]," Tim said. "We just have a great ministry opportunity."As it turns out, Liquid has an incredible outreach and ministry for people with special needs — including a full-time cafe staffed by those with special needs. "You will find some of our friends with Aspbergers, Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral palsy, you name it, serving on the front lines, greeting people, hospitality, working in the cafe," he said. "We actually just opened a full-time cafe that is entirely employed special needs adults because we find that they often age out of the education system...they have extraordinary abilities and spiritual capacity to know Jesus."Listen to this incredible and encouraging episode of "You're Gonna Make It."CONNECT WITH DANIEL FUSCO:- Follow Daniel on Facebook- Follow Daniel on Instagram- Follow Daniel on Twitter
The Special Needs Ministry at St. Michael's parish in Memphis helped to celebrate mass on Sunday. They were lectors, altar servers, and signed the beautiful prayers and songs for the congregation. This was a joyful mass, and, in this homily, Fr. Ben speaks about the joy they bring to our community. Bonus: At the end of the homily we added our wonderful Silvia Vega singing Oceans by Hillsong UNITED. This was a beautiful moment in the church to have her sing as a girl with Downs Syndrome signed it.
In this episode of The Reformed Deacon hosts David Nakhla and John Voss talk with Rev. Stephen Tracey, pastor of Lakeview OPC in Rockport, ME on a topic that might seem overwhelming to churches, and as such, may be overlooked, “Disabilities and the Church”. This is a powerful and very helpful episode and should be required listening for every Christian—certainly for elders and deacons. It will open your eyes to some of the challenges the disabled and their families face in relationship to the church—some you may never have thought before listening. In his three simple steps to minister to, and with, those with disabilities, Rev. Tracey suggests, "Be a welcoming church, be a welcoming church to anyone, and do what you can." The population of students with special needs is growing and accounts for close to 15 percent of the total student population. Special needs are medical, mental, or psychological disabilities that require special care. Unfortunately, people with special needs can be overlooked in the church because we don't know how to serve them well. In today's Candid Conversation, Bruce and Rachel Lowe join Jonathan for a frank discussion on how to serve special needs families in the local church. The Lowes share their own personal story of the joys and struggles of raising their children with Fragile X syndrome and how they express the loving character of God in unique and challenging ways. Together, they discuss how we can be more intentional about including special needs children and adults in the church by recognizing their God-given spiritual gifts. In addition to being a fantastic scholar and published author, Bruce Lowe is a beloved seminary professor, friend, and mentor of Jonathan's.You don't want to miss this sweet episode as Jonathan and the Lowes peel back layers of the challenging yet rewarding work of engaging with our brothers and sisters with special needs.eeds. Every person needs to find a place of acceptance and belonging. For people with disabilities, too often, inclusion can be hard to come by, even within the body of Christ. As a pastor, Scott Sauls knows how important it is for the church to embrace marginalized people, like those with disabilities. He has seen firsthand how a robust ministry to people with disabilities—not only welcoming them but evoking their gifts—catalyzes the life of a church.Scott also knows that pastors and ministry leaders can feel overwhelmed by the idea of starting or growing a disability ministry. He exhorts leaders to trust in God's abundant provision (no matter the size of the budget or congregation) while stepping forward in faith to serve people with disabilities well.Key Questions:How can your church embrace people who are marginalized? What barriers do you face when it comes to serving or connecting with people with disabilities? How can you trust God's abundance and step out in faith today?Key Scripture:“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7 Resources:Find resources to start or grow a disability ministryRead Beautiful People Don't Just HappenSend Crystal a message. In this episode, featuring Abundant Life Church's Special Needs Coordinator, Quincey Nicholas, we learn more about how the church includes these individuals in various ministries. Quincey is a wife and a mother of two boys, who has a passion for special needs individuals. After becoming pregnant, she made the switch from working as a special education teacher to working at the church part-time as the Special Needs Coordinator. Quincey says “I'm not teaching reading and writing anymore, but I'm teaching the grace and beauty of the gospel.” Quincey gets special needs individuals involved in ministries that fit them at Abundant Life, including Journey Kids, Fusion, Deaf Ministry, other adult ministries, and events like Respite Night. There's something for everyone, ages 3-65+. You don't need any specific qualifications or training to volunteer in these ministries.
