In Episode #21 of NAPFA Nation, host Marie Swift interviews Britta Koepf, CFP®, ChSNC®, founder of Tranquil Path Financial Planning. The discussion begins with Koepf's background and motivations for establishing her financial advisory practice, focusing on the unique challenges faced by families planning for the financial futures of both aging parents and their differently-abled children. Key topics include the importance of legacy planning, the use of special needs trusts and ABLE accounts, and the financial advisor's role as an intermediary between clients and legal professionals. She also shares her retainer-based fee structure, which is based on the complexity of services rather than assets under management. Based on the training she received through the Alliance of Comprehensive Planners and adoption of the ACP methodology, Koepf says the tax-focused retainer-based approach creates a rich environment for meaningful support and more open conversations with clients. She emphasizes the importance of holistic planning that incorporates tax strategies, and she reflects on her career path while offering valuable advice for aspiring financial planners, highlighting the growing representation of women in the field. In a nutshell: Special needs financial challenges include planning for two retirements: parents and the special needs child     Legacy planning is crucial for special needs families Special needs trusts and ABLE accounts can be important tools    An ABLE account (Achieving a Better Life Experience) is a tax-advantaged savings account designed to help individuals and their families save for disability-related expenses without affecting their eligibility for government assistance programs Medicaid, Social Security benefits, and SSI (Supplemental Security Income, a program administered by the Social Security Administration for disabled people) are factors to consider Koepf acts as an “attorney translator” which improves outcomes between clients and lawyers    The retainer-based business model gives Koepf the ability to do fee calculation based on complexity, not just assets, and the flat fee encourages open communication with clients    Koepf's journey from biomedical humanities to the financial planning profession serves as an example of how women can progress along a similar path A higher proportion of women offering holistic financial planning and advice is an idea embraced by Koepf and many others in the fee-only community Learn more about Koepf's professional services and mission at www.TranquilFP.com. Special Note: In 2023, we rebranded the NAPFA podcast with a new album cover and series title: NAPFA Nation. The Lucas Project provides recognition, respite, and resources to family caregivers of those with special needs. 16.3 million People in the U.S. are caregivers to a child with special needs. That number is staggering and also a wake-up call.  Most of us know of someone who is caring for a child with special needs and if you don't personally know of someone, you can be assured that they are in your neighborhood; probably hiding behind closed doors isolated and exhausted. Caregivers often project the perception that “everything is okay,” when in fact, it probably is not okay and they would so appreciate having someone reach out and lend a hand.  It is our job as a society to surround these caregivers and support them through the difficult times, because a child is only as healthy as the caregiver, and society is only as healthy as the families within it. Those Who Can't Teach Shelley Kenow pt 2 We've seen news reports about how the COVID lockdowns has detrimentally affected the aptitude scores of school age children. We've seen reports of how many students are still struggling in school. Those two years of the shutdown has set many students back years in their ability to use applied knowledge to their studies. But there is also another group of students that suffered greatly. Their stories are not being promoted or discussed very much in the public sector. But that is nothing new. For many special needs students, their stories have not been that “front and center” that often. The teachers tasked with helping these special needs children also struggle in trying to help them achieve success. The COVID lockdowns also affected them. There is just something “missing” with virtual learning that cost our children dearly during COVID, especially in the Special Needs community. My guest today has been working with special needs children for over 25 years. Shelley Kenow is a certified special education teacher and author of a captivating book, “Those Who Can't… Teach: True Stories of Special Needs Families to Promote Acceptance, Inclusion and Empathy.” Get ready to be inspired and gain new perspectives as we dive into part two of Shelley's incredible journey and the transformative power of her work! Amen! How has this method improved their ability to integrate into society as a whole? Why did you write this book, “Those Who Can't…Teach,” and why did you feel it was needed now? You worked with or know every family that is in your book, correct? How did they initially respond when you approached them about telling their story in your book? I read that many special needs teachers wish you would've written it sooner!  How has the publication of your book, “Those Who Can't…Teach,” impacted teachers? Has this also resulted in improvements in the children's educational process that you know of? During your tenure and during the writing of this book, how has this affected your Faith in God and your faith in man? I know it is a sensitive area in education, but have you been able to share your Faith with students or parents along the way? You also host your own podcast on Facebook and YouTube called “#NoLimits.” Can you share about your program with us? Shelley, this is so interesting. How can someone order a copy of your book? Is it on Amazon? If someone wanted to reach out to you for more information, ask a question or possibly do an interview such as this, how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you? I'll put links to all of this down in the show notes below. Folks, you may or may not have a Special Needs child. Whether you do or not does not matter, because I know that you know someone who does. Amen! You need to drop down into the show notes and reach out to Shelly, right now. You need to be sure to order your own copy

Amen! Help me welcome to the program, Shelley Kenow. Shelley, it is such a blessing to have you on the program today! First question I always start with is this. Other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Shelley Kenow?” Let's back up way back to the beginning. What first motivated you to become special needs educator? When you first started teaching special needs children, what were some of the major obstacles you faced and how have they improved over the years? From what I understand, you have to help, not just the students, but you also need to help the parents in order to provide help to the students. Can you explain the difficulties in working with the parents in what you do? When I was in school, way back in the 1970's, the special needs students did not attend the same public schools as the general population. Right or wrong, that's the way it was. When did the transformation begin that integrated them into the same educational atmosphere? How has this method improved their ability to integrate into society as a whole? Why did you write this book, “Those Who Can't…Teach,” and why did you feel it was needed now? You worked with or know every family that is in your book, correct? Folks, you may or may not have a Special Needs child. Whether you do or not does not matter, because I know that you know someone who does. Amen! You need to drop down into the show notes and reach out to Shelly, right now. You need to be sure to order your own copy of her book, “Those Who Can't Teach” right now. In fact, order two or three copies and share them with those you know. Order a copy and take it to your school and give sow it into a special needs teacher. They will be eternally grateful to you! Amen!
