If we want to be holy, the Virgin Mary should have an integral role in our spiritual life; but sometimes, perhaps, you might think you cannot relate to the Blessed Mother because she was immaculately conceived and didn’t have to struggle with sin as we do. In this episode, Fr. Mike shares how even though Mary did not struggle with sin, she still had her own unique struggle that we can relate to when we are seeking holiness. Fr. While many of us may become stressed out before Christmas and depressed afterwards—working hard to make the holiday perfect and burning out once it’s all “over”—the Light of the season can still shine through if we remember one thing. In this episode, Fr. Mike Schmitz explains what it means for Christmas to be a season of hope, and reminds us that strengthening our relationship with Jesus while learning to trust him is the one thing that matters this season. Learning How To Love from the Bible

Do you want to learn how to love like the Bible teaches? Bible-based love, indeed any Bible-based relationships, can be attained if we understand what the Bible says about love. Loving someone rightly is difficult because selfish motives often seep into even our closest relationships. In this episode, Fr. Mike Schmitz connects the Old and New Testaments, using the story of the Fall in Genesis to show how, despite our selfish motives, we are still made for love. He shows how the Fall was not a curse from God but a remedy for humanity’s broken idea of love. Because Adam and Eve — and subsequently, each one of us — chose self-preservation over self-gift and wanted pleasure apart from sacrifice, God had to teach us that love costs something. He provided a remedy and a Redeemer so we could learn to be a gift from him to others. Fr. It’s all too common for us to think of our work as either the thing that gives us our identity, or something to be avoided at all cost, or some unhealthy combination of those two misleading philosophies. In this episode, Fr. Mike aims to bring inspiration to our everyday jobs by showing us how our labor can be a way to share in God’s nature. By striving to look past humanity’s brokenness and sin, we can move beyond seeing work as a burden, and see how every act of work has dignity. Fr. The Book of Eli (Denzel Washington) and The Road (Viggo Mortensen) provide powerful illustrations for Fr. Mike’s talk about hope this week. These two dystopian stories demonstrate how hope can give us the strength to put everything on the line for something or someone we love, even when we know we may not see the fruits of our sacrifice. “Let no one come here, who with his lips can say, ‘We lift up our hearts to our Lord’, but in his mind employs his thoughts on worldly business.  God indeed should be in our memory at all times, but if this is impossible because of human infirmity, at least in this hour this should be our earnest endeavour.” –St. Cyril of Jerusalem (c.315 – 387) Last week we heard from professor and author, Timothy O’Malley of Notre Dame.  He shared from his book, Bored Again Catholic, and those words really spoke to not only Megan and Becky but also to their listeners.  On this week’s episode, Megan and Becky again Lead the Conversation.  We take some insights and comments from listeners and dig in deeper with more Scripture, early church fathers, and Saints.  We are so blessed with a beautiful and rich and full Tradition.  Being bored at Mass (or prayer or other  spiritual discipline) is an invitattion to walk in faith knowing that Jesus is meeting all of us on that alter. Every day, every Mass, regardless of how we feel and whether or not we think we deserve His love, Mercy and or the gift of the Grace of the Eucharist, Jesus is there. Show Notes: “The Sacrifce of the Mass has been instituted for four ends: to honour God; to satisfy for our sins; to thank God for his benefits; to obtain divine graces. It is the same sacrifce as that once offered on Calvary, with this difference, that on Calvary the blood of Jesus Christ was really shed, but on the altar it is shed only in a mystical, unbloody manner.” St. Alphonsus Liguori (c.1696-1787) “For a church is not a barber’s shop or a chemist’s or a market stall: it is the dwelling of angels and of archangels; it is the kingdom of God; it is heaven itself.  If someone gave you entrance into heaven, you would not dare to speak a word, not even if you should see your own brother or father.  Likewise in the church, only spiritual things may be spoken, for this is heaven.” -St. John Chrysostom (c.347-407) A Biblical Walk Through the Mass: Understanding What We Say and Do in the Liturgy by Edward Sri Subscribe to the Sunday Bible Refelctions by Scott Hahn I’m Not Being Fed – Lighthouse Catholic Media CD/Streaming audio by Jeff Cavins (not Steve Ray Becky referenced on the episode) The Mass and the Saints  Book published by Ignatius also available on Amazon DVD set from Ascension Press – Altaration: The Mystery of the Mass Revealed by Mark Hart
