By request, we are looking at the Virgin Mary in this week's podcast, in particular the "dark Feminine" elements of her mythology. An exploration into Mary (or Maryam), mother of Jesus reveals various layers of her myth and the doctrines surrounding her. This includes the myth of the dying and resurrecting vegetation god, some striking parallels with Semele, mother of Dionysus, the heroic myth of the Virgin Birth and the Divine Child, and the social implications of her role in the Bible and other texts from the early Church to the medieval period.
APOSTLES CREED STUDY #6September 14, 2025I believe in God the Father Almighty,Maker of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary.He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.He ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.KEY THEMES:1.INITIAL THOUGHTSa. b. c. Look at this section through the lens of apologetics.Unbeliever's Q: “How could a loving God send anyone to hell?”When we recognize our sin, the real question is: “How can a just, righteous, and holy God let sinful people into heaven?”d. The Person of Jesus Christ… His title, authority, divinity, andhumanity. We have examined his “resume” as Savior.e. He also experienced real suffering (passion). This section of theCreed focuses on what we call “Christ's ministry of humiliation.”f. WSC 27: Wherein did Christ's humiliation consist? “Christ'sg. humiliation consisted in his being born, and that in a lowcondition, made under the law, undergoing the miseries of thislife, the wrath of God, and the cursed death of the cross; in beingburied, and continuing under the power of death for a time.”For a full account of Jesus Christ's humiliation, read: Matthew 272.SUFFERED UNDER PONTIUS PILATEa. A jarring change of tone! From glory to suffering.b. What about His years of teaching? The Creed's focus is on theATONING work of Jesus Christ, not all his life.c. This section of the Creed answers the question: “Why was Jesusconceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary?” Tosuffer and die in our place! (The Passion of Christ)d. Why is Pilate mentioned?i. This is real history! (not a saga or parable or illustration)ii. Pilate was the “Persona Publica” – Public Office. John 19:53.CRUCIFIEDa. Crucifixion was the most agonizing and humiliating form ofexecution. It was for outcasts and the worst of criminals.b. Physical and spiritual suffering… “My God, My God, why haveyou forsaken me?” (Matt. 27:46)c.Deuteronomy 21:23, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.”d. 9/10/25 - Yvonne-Aimée of Jesus (1901–1951) was a French mystic, visionary, and Augustinian nun whose hidden holiness shook the 20th century. From a young age she experienced mystical visions of Christ and the Virgin Mary, later becoming known for miraculous healings and the powerful prayer she received from Jesus: “O Jesus, King of Love, I put my trust in Thy merciful goodness.” During World War II, she fearlessly hid members of the French Resistance and Jewish refugees from the Gestapo inside her convent, narrowly escaping arrest and torture. After the war, she became Mother Superior of the Augustinian monastery in Malestroit, where her life of heroic charity, extraordinary mystical gifts, and devotion to the Sacred Heart and Divine Mercy inspired countless souls. In this episode, we explore her visions, miracles, prophecies, and her witness of courage in Nazi-occupied France. Yvonne-Aimée of Jesus stands as a radiant example of Eucharistic devotion, Marian consecration, and trust in God's mercy amidst suffering.

CONTINUED Nathaniel Peters, The Nature of Murder and Evil in Andrew Klavan's "The Kingdom of Cain" Nathaniel Peters reviews Andrew Klavan's "The Kingdom of Cain," which explores murder and evil through fiction and real-life examples. Klavan, a former atheist, was propelled to faith by pondering evil, suggesting that recognizing objective moral order is necessary to condemn acts like those of the Marquis de Sade. The book examines Leopold and Loeb, who murdered to prove their superiority and live beyond good and evil, but left a crucial clue, highlighting their human fallibility. Klavan also considers Dostoevsky's Raskolnikov, whose rationalized yet pointless murder leads to a breakdown of his self-deception. Klavan argues artistic creation, like Michelangelo's Pietà, can redeem or transform the subject of art. Michelangelo's Pietà Vatican City, Vatican City A marble sculpture by Michelangelo depicting the Virgin Mary holding the body of Jesus Christ.

St. Matthew 19:16-26 (Rich Young Man) Hebrews 9:1-7 In this homily, Father Anthony reflects on the Gospel of the rich young man, reminding us that salvation is more than meeting a minimum standard—it is a lifelong journey toward holiness. He shows how Christ gently leads us beyond comfort, calling us to surrender our attachments, whether wealth, time, opinions, or fears, in order to live in love and trust before God. Through the practice of kenosis, or self-emptying, we learn to soften our hearts, grow in grace, and allow Christ to transform us into His likeness. NOTE: The prayer that Fr. Anthony references at the beginning of the homily is: "The Holy Spirt shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee." It is from St. Luke 1:35, with the Archangel Gabriel pronouncing this blessing upon the Virgin Mary. As Fr. Anthony notes, the Orthodox Church uses this blessing liturgically during the Divine Liturgy.
August 28, 2025 Today's Reading: Catechism: How Can Bodily Eating and Drinking Do Such Great Things?Daily Lectionary: 1 Kings 11:1-26; 2 Corinthians 6:1-18Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. (Small Catechism, SA)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Augustine had a lot to forgive. He was a wild child who knowingly avoided the Lord. His father was a pagan, but his mother was a Christian, so he was no stranger to the Church. Still, he was not a fan. This spiraled into one bad choice after another, so Augustine believed many false teachings and Manichean philosophies, lived in sin, fathered a child without marrying the mother, and still refused the biblical pleadings of his own mother. As a Manichean, he believed that the soul was good and the body was evil. Augustine would have a hard time wrapping his brain around a biblical unity of body and soul. This would carry over to the Lord's Supper. For Augustine, before coming to faith, the Eucharist would be extremely difficult to understand. How could the good and holy God take on flesh that would be evil? And how would He then take on flesh, in and with something earthly like bread? It's all so confusing; How can bodily eating and drinking do such great things? It is not just the bodily eating and drinking that does these things. The Lord works a miracle with the Sacrament. Each and every time, the Word of God, along with the eating and drinking of that bread and wine, gives the real and true flesh and blood of Jesus Christ. And that flesh and blood is not evil or corrupt, like the early Manichean Augustine thought. It is Body and Blood that is good and perfect and holy, placing your God into you, so you taste and see that the Lord is good!In time, God rescued Augustine from his sin and brought him to faith. The extremely intelligent scholar and great speaker became a humble catechumen and member of the Church, and later, a great bishop and saint.Augustine had a lot to forgive. You do, too. That is precisely why our good and holy Lord took on flesh and was born of the Virgin Mary. That is also precisely why He gives us His holy and precious Body and Blood in the Eucharist. As the perfect and holy body of Jesus enters you, your corrupt body is sanctified from within. Forgiveness, life, and salvation are given through these words, Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins so that you may be strengthened and preserved in body and soul to life everlasting. Amen.In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Thy body, giv'n for me, O Savior, Thy blood which Thou for me didst shed, These are my life and strength forever, By them my hungry soul is fed. Lord, may Thy body and Thy blood Be for my soul the highest good! (LSB 619:1)Rev. Part 12- This is the twelfth installment of a free reading of my 1st book entitled “The Constant Procession.” You'll hear it for free from cover to cover in 15-minute podcast segments! By the end of WWI, among those who died on the battlefields were the best and brightest of that generation. This suddenly created a vacuum of natural leaders across the world. Nihilism followed and brought on the attitude that “anything goes.” The “Roaring Twenties” became the “Great Depression” that became WWII. But then, a Marian apparition from long ago brought hope through a phenomenon known as "Our Lady of the Great Return" in France during that horrific war. It brought people hope and became an 'endless procession' as people marched behind a very special statue of the Virgin Mary across France. There are links, photos and more about this on my website. In this episode, I take you with me on my live pilgrimage to Lourdes, the sanctuary of Mother Mary in France. Lourdes is a place where millions travel for healing, hope, and miracles but what I discovered here went far beyond holy water and candlelight. I share what it felt like to walk into the energy of the grotto, the lessons I learned waiting for hours in line (yes, including a bathroom incident that turned into a teaching on forgiveness), and the raw emotions that surfaced after bathing in the sacred waters. I'm coming to you live, raw, still in the thick of my spiritual pilgrimage to Lourdes, the sanctuary of Mother Mary in France. It's a very personal journey for me that's still unfolding in the present day as I'm recording live here in France. I wanted to bring you along and have a sacred heart to heart. Honestly sounds like a personal diary rather than poddy ep! If you haven't heard of Lourdes in 1858, a young peasant girl named Bernadette had a series of visions of the Virgin Mary. Since then, millions of pilgrims have come each year, seeking healing, peace and connection with the divine. You see people from every corner of the world — some arriving in wheelchairs, some carrying heavy burdens and some simply searching for a quiet moment of faith. What struck me most about Lourdes is that it's not just about Catholicism. Yes, it is deeply Catholic in its roots and traditions, and very much like an adult Catholic Disneyland where old ladies go crazy for (a story about that later on). But when you are there, what you feel goes beyond religion. It feels like a universal mother energy. It feels like the presence of unconditional love itself, waiting to embrace you. The Energy of Sacred Places I've always believed there are certain places on Earth that simply hold energy. You step into them, and you know something is different. Sometimes it's in nature, like a mountain or a forest, and sometimes it's in sanctuaries like Lourdes. When I arrived, I could feel it immediately. The air was thick with prayer and it happens the year I've gone in 2025 is the Jubilee year marking the universal theme of hope. There were candles flickering everywhere. It was extremely busy, and what's so powerful is that this energy isn't just historical — it's alive. You can feel the devotion of millions of people here. For me, being there wasn't about worshiping a figure from my childhood faith. It was about standing in a place where the Divine Mother energy is so tangible, so present. Returning to My Roots I should share a little background. I grew up Roman Catholic. Mary was always present in my childhood — her statues in churches, rosaries in the hands of family members, prayers before bed. In fact, I had a memory flashback to being in kindergarten or year one. My first school play, I randomly got chosen to play Mother Mary in a Christmas play. My dad was religious and said if I had a Western name it would be Mary, so I would be Mary Dang to you! Like many of us, I drifted as I grew older for various reasons (which you can read about in my book The Great Unlearning). My spiritual path expanded, I explored other traditions, and Mary became more of a symbol in the background. Yet when I walked into Lourdes, something in me remembered. It wasn't about dogma or rules or religion. It was about the deep comfort of the mother figure I had known all along. She was waiting there for me, not asking me to prove anything — just to receive.
In this deeply personal episode, Cindy shares the story of a solo trip to Houston during the early days of her burnout. There, two pieces of art—Niki de Saint Phalle's joyful Nana sculptures and a 13th-century painting of the Virgin Mary—revealed the emotional contrast between who she was and who she longed to be. This is a story about the weight of exhaustion, the mirror of grief, and the slow, sacred path back to joy.Mentioned in the episode:Niki de Saint Phalle – The NanasNiki de Saint Phalle: Rebel with a CauseMother of God (Byzantine, c. 13th century) at the Menil CollectionRothko ChapelMemoir excerpt from Art Is About Being WholePast episode: The Shark and the Book: Burnout, Subconscious Magic, and the Creative ProcessPast episode: Revealing the Door Into Our Hearts: Delighting in the Duality of Creative Existence with Yola MehmetiUpcoming Events:

The “Hidden Christians” or Kakure Kirishitan went underground in the 17th century when the Tokugawa shogunate repressed Christianity from 1638 until the ban was lifted in 1873. In response, many Christian believers modified their spiritual practices to resemble Buddhist ones on a surface level, but which held hidden Christian meaning.Depictions of the Virgin Mary modeled on the Buddhist deity Kannon (Avalokiteśvara), goddess of mercy, were known as "Maria Kannon". The prayers were adapted to sound like Buddhist chants, yet retained many untranslated words from Latin, Portuguese, and Spanish. The Bible and other parts of the liturgy were passed down orally, because printed works could be confiscated by authorities.Approximately 30,000 secret Christians came out of hiding in 1873 after the Meiji Restoration. The Kakure Kirishitan became known as Mukashi Kirishitan or 'ancient Christians.' Some Kakure Kirishitan did not rejoin the Catholic Church and became known as the Hanare Kirishitan or 'separated Christians' and live on the Gotō Islands. Today, there are less than 100 Hidden Christians left on the island of Ikitsuki in Nagasaki, down from 10,000 in the 1940s.In this episode, Christine Leong interviewed me to explain what I discovered about these “Hidden Christians”.

In this episode of the Made Good podcast, Bishop Athanasius Schneider shares his profound insights shaped by his experiences growing up in the persecuted church in Soviet Kazakhstan. He emphasizes the importance of fortitude in faith, especially in the face of modern challenges such as materialism and relativism. The conversation explores the role of the Virgin Mary as a model of faith, the significance of understanding Scripture through the Church Fathers, and the necessity of clarity in Church doctrine. Bishop Schneider also addresses the unique challenges faced by women today, particularly in relation to motherhood, and offers encouragement for those seeking marriage. He concludes with practical advice for young Catholics on deepening their faith and prayer life.

On the Cross, the Lord charged the Apostle John to care for His holy Mother. The Apostle settled her in a house in Jerusalem, where she lived for the rest of her days on earth, praying and offering counsel and encouragement to the Apostles. In her old age, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to her and told her that in three days' time she would enter into her rest. Giving thanks to God, she hastened to the Mount of Olives where she prayed continually, preparing herself to meet the Lord. Meanwhile, the Apostles, scattered in various parts of the earth, were caught up in clouds and miraculously brought by the holy Angels to Jerusalem, so that they might all be with the Theotokos at her repose. After she had blessed them, she gave up her soul to God. The Apostles buried her with all honor, solemnity and joy at Gethsemane. The Apostle Thomas, who was delayed (again!) by God's providence, arrived on the third day and went to her tomb, intending to honor her. But when the Apostles opened her grave, they found her holy body gone and only the winding-sheet remaining. That evening the Theotokos appeared to them surrounded by angels, and said to them, 'Rejoice: I will be with you always!'. Thus they learned that she had been bodily translated to heaven, anticipating the general resurrection of all. Her age at her repose is not known, but many say that she was about sixty years old.
Full Text of ReadingsSolemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Lectionary: 621, 622The Saint of the day is Assumption of the Blessed Virgin MaryThe Story of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation of bishops, theologians and laity. There were few dissenting voices. What the pope solemnly declared was already a common belief in the Catholic Church. We find homilies on the Assumption going back to the sixth century. In following centuries, the Eastern Churches held steadily to the doctrine, but some authors in the West were hesitant. However by the 13th century there was universal agreement. The feast was celebrated under various names—Commemoration, Dormition, Passing, Assumption—from at least the fifth or sixth century. Today it is celebrated as a solemnity. Scripture does not give an account of Mary's assumption into heaven. Nevertheless, Revelation 12 speaks of a woman who is caught up in the battle between good and evil. Many see this woman as God's people. Since Mary best embodies the people of both Old and New Testaments, her assumption can be seen as an exemplification of the woman's victory. Furthermore, in 1 Corinthians 15:20, Paul speaks of Christ's resurrection as the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. Since Mary is closely associated with all the mysteries of Jesus' life, it is not surprising that the Holy Spirit has led the Church to believe in Mary's share in his glorification. So close was she to Jesus on earth, she must be with him body and soul in heaven. Reflection In the light of the Assumption of Mary, it is easy to pray her Magnificat (Luke 1:46–55) with new meaning. In her glory she proclaims the greatness of the Lord and finds joy in God her savior. God has done marvels to her and she leads others to recognize God's holiness. She is the lowly handmaid who deeply reverenced her God and has been raised to the heights. From her position of strength she will help the lowly and the poor find justice on earth, and she will challenge the rich and powerful to distrust wealth and power as a source of happiness. Read Online“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his Name.” Luke 1:46–49Today we celebrate one of seventeen different memorials, feasts and solemnities in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary that are found on the Roman Liturgical Calendar. Today's celebration is one of the four great Solemnities by which our Blessed Mother is honored. Obviously, no other person other than our Lord is honored and celebrated with as much solemnity as the Mother of God.The Solemnity of the Assumption honors the fact that when the Blessed Virgin Mary completed her life on earth, she was taken body and soul into Heaven to be with her resurrected Son so as to adore the Most Holy Trinity forever. It's an amazing fact to consider that she retains her body and soul, united as one in Heaven, in anticipation of that glorious day when the new Heavens and Earth will be created and when all the faithful will rise so as to live in a new bodily form forever with God.Though this dogma of our faith had been held and believed by the faithful from the earliest times of our Church, especially since it was witnessed by those closest to our Blessed Mother at the time of her glorious Assumption, it wasn't until November 1, 1950, that Pope Pius XII solemnly proclaimed it to be so, raising this teaching of our faith to the level of a dogma, meaning, it must be held and believed by all. In part, the Holy Father declared, “...we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.”The Gospel passage quoted above comes from the beginning of Mary's song of praise, her Magnificat, by which she not only gives the greatest glory to God but also reveals who she is. She is the one whom “all generations” will call “blessed.” She is the one for whom “the Almighty has done great things.” She is the one who will eternally proclaim “the greatness of the Lord” and whose spirit will forever rejoice in God her Savior. And she is that lowliest of servants whom God has raised up to the greatest glory.Reflect, today, with the whole Church, upon the Most Glorious Ever-Virgin Mary who was conceived without sin, remained sinless throughout her life, and was taken body and soul into Heaven where she now adores the Most Holy Trinity and intercedes for you and for the whole Church. This is a Solemnity of great rejoicing! Share in this joy with the whole Church and with all the saints in Heaven! Most glorious and Ever-Virgin Mary, I rejoice today with you and with the whole Church for the most glorious things that God has done for you. You are beauty beyond beauty, Immaculate in every way, and worthy of our deepest love. As you now share body and soul in the glories of Heaven, please pray for me and for all your dear children on earth. Cover us with your mantle of love and pour forth the mercy of God upon us always. Mother Mary, assumed into Heaven, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Jesus, I trust in You. St. Maximilian Kolbe demonstrated a powerful witness of love through his ultimate act of self-sacrifice at Auschwitz, where he volunteered to die in place of another prisoner—a stranger and a father. Motivated by his deep faith and devotion to Christ and the Virgin Mary, Kolbe's love transcended fear and self-preservation, embodying the Gospel's call to lay down one's life for others. His martyrdom stands as a radiant testament to the power of selfless love, even in the face of unimaginable evil. --- Help Spread the Good News --- Father Brian's homilies are shared freely thanks to generous listeners like you.
