This is the third and final episode in our series of three talks we did at the Odyssey Hackathon in our home town Groningen, earlier this year. Today’s guest is Sandra Ro, a derivatives-trader-turned-crypto-evangelist, entrepreneur, angel investor, and CEO of the Global Blockchain Business Council. GBBC’s mission is to educate governments, regulators and executives at large corporations about “this thing called blockchain that can be very confusing at times”. We talk about peer-to-peer transfer of value, tokenization and incentives models, provenance and anti-counterfeiting and about ecosystem development. We also talk about regulation: “Of course there has to be regulation. There have to be rules to the game. Self-regulation does not work. The greed is real.” Sandra is enthusiastic about the opportunities blockchain offers to repair the shortcomings of capitalism: “The system today does not work very well when you are poor. This technology can change that.” She also shares an interesting cultural observation: “The culture in this [blockchain] space is much more cooperative, much more about growing the pie together. And it is very interesting to see [here] that this culture is now starting to impact big businesses. I have already seen cooperations that I never thought would exist. Blockchain has already changed the world. It has already changed mindsets, and that is often the most difficult part of change.”

This is the second of three interviews we did at the Odyssey Hackathon, in April. QJ Wang is CEO of the Ethereum Community Fund (ECF), a non-profit with a mission to “grow the Ethereum ecosystem and accelerate the mainstream adoption of decentralized technologies”. ECF is both a fund and a network; it does donations and grants, but it also tries to connect and coordinate the multitude of initiatives around the globe that are working on different aspects of “solving the tragedy of the commons”. QJ explains how ECF has become known as “the butlers of blockchain” - by helping projects to find resources, avoid common pitfalls, keep focus, and sometimes by nudging them in a “better” direction. She paints a broad picture: not just ethereum, but open source software (and even hardware) in general. “In the end, it is about changing the nature of the game. From a finite game, to an infinite game, in which anyone can participate and everybody wins.” Interview recorded at Odyssey Hackathon 2019, April 13th.

At the Odyssey Hackathon, earlier this year, Lykle was able to have a talk with Susan Oh, co-chair for AI at the ngo Blockchain for Impact. They talk about the various ways “blockchains” and artificial intelligence can work together and reinforce each other. She is also a “professional AI and blockchain BS detector”, and much of her work involves channeling precious time and energy towards the few projects that actually solve a real problem and are possible and somewhat scalable. Susan shares some interesting thoughts on ecosystem building, entrepreneurship, incentives and public-private cooperation. A “public digital infrastructure” is great, but without a culture that rewards entrepreneurship and risk-taking, very little will be built on that infrastructure ...

The twelfth episode of Untangled is exploring how we can restore the quickly disappearing forests of the planet and how we can build new sustainable systems to provide a good life for both animals, plants and people. Willie Smits from the Masarang Foundation in Indonesia is talking about his efforts to rebuild the rainforest on Borneo after it was devastated by the palm oil industry. And Jan-Peter Doomernik, Enexis, and Sam Butler are giving insights on how to create new and out-of-the-box ecosystems from the Odyssey Hackathon that we visited for the last episode of Untangled.

In the eleventh episode of Untangled we are visiting the world’s biggest blockchain and artificial intelligence hackathon Odyssey, which is the peak of the year for the organisers from Dutchchain, an open innovation program. To hear more about the event, we interviewed the founder himself, Rutger van Zuidam. And to hear more about why the Dutch government takes part in a hackathon and how the development of digital identities is moving ahead, we also interviewed Wouter Welling from the Dutch Interior Ministry. Out of the 99 teams present, 8 of them were using IOTA technology to power their solutions in attempts to solve complex real world problems dictated by a multitude of companies, organisations and ministries. We talked to a couple of them, including Jelle Millenaar from VX Company and Andre Fialho and David Hawig from Untangled Care that were also on the second episode of Untangled, but this time with a different project.
