At the 2026 NAMM Show, we interviewed representatives from the businesses in our field of music notation software and related technology. In this interview, we talk with Sam Butler, Avid's vice president of product management, and Joe Plazak, Sibelius product owner and senior principal software developer at Avid, to reflect on the philosophy behind Sibelius's recent development approach, how user feedback shapes prioritization, and where they believe users should most clearly feel progress compared to a year ago. We also talk about automation and AI in notation, the realities of cross-platform and mobile workflows, and what Avid wants musicians to understand about its long-term commitment to Sibelius. Be sure to check out our other conversations from the NAMM Show from earlier this month. At the 2026 NAMM Show, we interviewed representatives from the businesses in our field of music notation software and related technology. In this interview, we talk with Chris Swaffer, senior product manager of software at Fender, about how he thinks about Notion's current phase in its lifecycle, what the Fender name signals to users today, and how decisions around refinement, continuity, and cross-platform consistency get made in practice. We also dig into under-the-radar improvements, accessibility as a core product principle, direct transfer between Notion and Fender Studio Pro, and how intelligent assistance can support — rather than replace — human musical judgment. Exclusive interviews to analysis, match recaps to podcasts, the Insiders have you covered.Season 2026 is upon us and the Hawks fired up in sweltering conditions in their first pre-season hitout at the KCC.The Hawks prevailed by 17 points over the Cats — 16.15 (111) to 14.10 (94) — in front of a healthy brown and gold turnout at our new home. There was plenty to like, and plenty to refine. But for a first official outing at KCC, 16 goals and a 17-point win over the Cats is a pretty nice way to christen the place.Listen as Ash, Mick and Brad discussed: * The midfield mix and why Ward is trending towards the clear No.2 behind Jai;* What we need from our centre bounce rotations in 2026.* Reeves and Meek: how the ruck balance looked and why synergy matters more than raw hitout numbers this time of year;* Sam Butler's statement game — forward pressure, elite tackling and whether he's now locked into our best 23;* Mitch Lewis' presence up forward and how the mix of Lewis, Dear, Chol and (eventually) Gunston shapes the structure;* The kids watch — Noah Mraz competing hard and Aiden Schubert showing promise;* Why Flynn Perez is pressing hard for that SSP spot;* The upcoming Round One matchup against a GWS side dealing with significant injuries;* First impressions of the Kennedy Community Centre — strong crowd, great energy… and yes, the melted bitumen in the car park;* And much much more. At the 2026 NAMM Show, we interviewed representatives from the businesses in our field of music notation software and related technology. In this conversation, we speak with Sebastian Murgul, co-founder and CEO of klang.io, to talk about a category that sits just adjacent to music notation — and yet increasingly intersects with it in practical, unavoidable ways: music transcription. Sebastian explains what klang.io's tools are designed to do — and just as importantly, what they are not. We talk about why AI-based transcription has reached a point of practical usefulness now, where the hardest musical problems still lie, and how klang.io thinks about accuracy as something musicians can trust and build on, rather than a promise of perfection. We also discuss interoperability with notation software via formats like MIDI and MusicXML, real-world use cases that have surprised him, and the broader anxieties musicians understandably have around automation and AI. We last visited with Steinberg’s product marketing manager Daniel Spreadbury on the podcast upon the release of Dorico 4 in January 2022, and more recently last summer in Berlin at the MOLA conference in a panel discussion with his colleagues and competitors in the music notation software industry. Although Dorico didn’t have much of a presence at the 2024 NAMM Show, we welcome the opportunity to visit with Daniel here in a similar manner that we did with many of those colleagues and competitors at NAMM. We start not by focusing on the latest Dorico features, although we do discuss those. Instead, we speak with Daniel about how the Dorico community influences product development, to what extent Steinberg prioritizes customer requests and specific features, and how they balance those with some of the more long-term vision that they may have for the product. He gives us a sense of Dorico’s role within these companies, from a strategic, philosophical, and technical perspective. We explore how much of what they’re doing is done with the other products and services in mind, how those decisions are made, and how Dorico users benefit. We also talk about industry changes and how those philosophies end up shaping what customers see on their screens and even what kind of music they create. This episode, ST and I cover one of the hottest non-COVID topics in healthcare today.  We strike at the heart of clinician burnout and in particular issues related to unnecessary documentation. Our guests today were discovered by Sam Butler from Epic, who invited them to present their incredible work at a national meeting where I was an attendee. I  thought this was work that needed to get noticed as quickly as possible. And so we decided to develop this podcast to discuss what they've been doing. Dr. Heidi Twedt is Associate Chief Medical Information Officer, UW Health, and Clinical Professor of the division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Dr. Peter Kleinschmidt is the Medical Informatics Director of Quality and Safety and Assistant Professor in the division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Wisconsin. The two of them have developed an entire program dedicated to reducing the length and complexity of physician documentation.  As they tell us during the episode, it's simple to implement technically, but, as one might imagine, very challenging to make "sticky" from a change management perspective.    By the way, here's a link to a presentation by Heidi and Peter for those who want to hear more about this.

This week Danielle brings us the thrilling conclusion of the 1987 Hardy Boys novel Dead on Target by Franklin W. Dixon. The Hardys are on their way back to Bayport convinced that the infamous terrorist known as the Bullet is there to enact the opening night of his previous rehearsal bombing (no, a rehearsal bombing doesn't make sense, but don't ask questions). Back in Bayport, the Hardys and Frank's girlfriend (or maybe Joe's? Sam still isn't sure) Callie go to the police. However, the new officer in town, Sam Butler, is not buying their terrorist rehearsal bombing idea, which is really the only reasonable reaction to their story. Undeterred, the Hardy's decide to sneak into the mall at night to see if they can learn something. Fortunately for them, the mall is guarded exclusively by dogs for some reason, and even more bizarrely, Joe has brought a dart gun, since apparently every in this world just loves a worse version of a gun. While sneaking around, they stumble across the Bullet and instead of tranqing him, Joe shouts his name, alerting him to their presence and getting them all captured. Sam is unimpressed. The Bullet, equally as incompetent as the Hardys, merely ties them up in the mall basement near a pile of plastic explosives set to assassinate the not-yet-but-maybe-soon presidential candidate Walker. Why is this almost presidential candidate so important? Because something, something, anti-terrorism. Luckily, Callie was there with them and manages to escape and free them and Frank goes about disarming the bomb using the classic technique of a human pyramid. That was not a joke. With the bomb disabled, the Hardys still need to save Walker, for some reason, from the Bullet who surely won't give up that easily. Will they succeed? Will Joe get revenge for the death of whatsherface? Is there a Lion King Mufasa's death style scene? The answer to all these questions is of course yes, but it all happens in a way that only the Hardy boys can pull off: Hilariously.
