If you like birds, you will love this episode! Birds spark a deep wonder and help us to understand the living world. When birds disappear, they're signaling that we've stressed our landscapes and oceans. When we make changes and they rebound, it signals hope that we can find ways to flourish and protect the natural world. Becca Rodomsky-Bish, Project Leader from Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology, joins us in a wonderful conversation about our feathered friends, the Lab, and the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). Becca's focus in environmental education includes native habitats, sustainability, and conservation.  Beyond the Lab, she is an avid gardener creating beautiful gardens to feed her family as well as the wildlife in her area.  The “GBBC” is a February event that has united birdwatchers around the world for over 25 years. For one weekend each year, citizen scientists submit their bird observations from their home or in their community. The GBBC engages backyard bird watchers and helps guide people in creating bird-friendly homes and yards. This is something that everyone can engage in as a citizen scientist. And it's just one project supported by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology whose mission is to interpret and conserve the Earth's biological diversity through research, education, and citizen science focused on birds and nature. The Lab brings together the agility and impact of an on-the-ground nonprofit organization with world-class science and teaching as part of Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Together, they transform data into knowledge by pioneering new techniques that combine citizen science, machine learning, and data visualizations. Their studies explore the earth's biodiversity, the processes that have generated it, and ways to conserve this abundance of life. Key partners in much of this research are the many thousands of people who volunteer for citizen-science projects. The Lab created Merlin, a very popular application that helps identify birds by answering some simple questions, or via their photos, songs and calls. The Lab also developed and manages eBird, a database that engages a global audience in sharing observations to empower research and conservation of birds and ecosystems. Through the exploration, analysis, and visualization of massive data sets, insights are revealed on the distribution, movements, status, and trends of birds through time and across hemispheres. Learn how you can participate in this process with the Great Backyard Bird Count. This week, I'm joined by my dear friend, Sandra Ro, for episode 179 of the Tech Intersect™ Podcast to discuss the myth that crypto is unregulated! Right now, there are some negative impacts because of the regulatory uncertainty, which impacts consumers, entrepreneurs, and countries' competitiveness. Disclaimer: I didn't record this episode deep in the forest or on a deserted stretch of beach. I spent the weekend in my backyard, taking part in the 2023 Great Backyard Bird Count. Temperatures ranged from the mid-20s (F) into the high-40s over the weekend. The wind was BRUTAL, with gusts hitting 30 miles per hour. This is not a clean recording, but it accurately reflects the conditions in which I found myself during this event. As a birding enthusiast and a self-proclaimed citizen scientist, I am taking part in the 2023 Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), a global event that encourages people to observe and count the birds in their backyard, local park, or any other location for at least 15 minutes on one or more days during the event. The event for 2023 began on Friday (2/17) and ends tomorrow (2/20). Despite insane wind and less-than-ideal birding conditions, I identified 14 different bird species during the event, including some of my favorite songbirds and a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers.Participating in the GBBC was not only fun and rewarding, but it also had important scientific value. By counting birds and reporting my sightings online, I contributed to one of the largest bird surveys in the world and helped scientists track changes in bird populations and their distribution over time. Even though my observations were from a small area, it's still valuable data that can help identify hotspots of bird diversity and monitor the spread of invasive species. The following are the bird species I identified during the event:Mourning DoveBald EagleDowny WoodpeckerPileated WoodpeckerBlue JayAmerican CrowBlack-capped ChickadeeTufted TitmouseWhite-breasted NuthatchCedar WaxwingNorthern CardinalHouse SparrowAmerican GoldfinchCommon RavenI hope you will consider joining me next February for the next bird count. Before the FTX blowup there was a serious conversation happening around regulation of the DeFi space. During our Merge event in London last month I interviewed Lawrence Wintermeyer, the Chair of the GBBC Digital Finance (and the former chair of Innovate Finance) on the topic, Paving the Way for Web3 Legitimacy.Given the events of the last couple of weeks this topic has new urgency. For the DeFi industry to scale it must begin a serious and open discussion with regulators and it needs to address some of the thorny issues caused by its decentralized structure. This interview was recorded on October 17 and there was a prescient quote from Lawrence during the interview: "The industry just does not look like a very safe place to put your money right now."In this podcast you will learn:Why people are at war in the digital innovation space. Why it is critical for the web3 industry to come together and self-regulate.What a co-regulatory model could look like. How can approach regulating DeFi where it is by definition decentralized. The difficult issues that most need to be addressed. Why identity and liability considerations are so important for DeFi.How far away we are from effective DeFi regulation. His thoughts on permissioned and closed DeFi networks. What's the most practical thing that we can do to create Web3 legitimacy.Connect with Lawrence on LinkedInConnect with Lawrence on TwitterConnect with Fintech One-on-One: Tweet me @PeterRenton Connect with me on LinkedIn Find previous Fintech One-on-One episodes

This week's episode is another fun edition of Game Boys' Book Club, the monthly segment that has nothing to do with books and everything to do with games. And what better way to be introduced to a trilogy than with the final game of the series? Ryan picked Hitman 3 as the game for the month of May. How do Alex and Tim fare with the third entry in the trilogy? How different was each Boys' approach to an episode? And just how chaotic can things get in a sandbox like this? My guest today is John deVadoss, the founder of NGD Enterprise Inc. NGD Enterprise focuses on the blockchain developer experience and tooling for the NEO blockchain. Neo bills itself as a “rapidly growing and developing” ecosystem that has the goal of becoming the foundation for the next generation of the internet — a new economy where digitized payments, identities, and assets come together. Initially known as Antshares, this project was believed to be China's first-ever public blockchain when it was launched in February 2014. The open-source platform was subsequently rebranded to Neo three years later. As well as creating a worldwide community of developers who create new infrastructure for the network and lower barriers to entry, the team behind this project operates an EcoBoost initiative that's designed to encourage people to build decentralized apps and smart contracts on its blockchain. Previously, John was a co-founder of the InterWork Alliance, which is now part of the GBBC. Earlier, He was a general manager at Microsoft for close to two decades, during which he built out the architecture for .NET v1, Visual Studio Tools, the Microsoft Application Platform, Microsoft Digital (which he scaled to billion-dollar P&L), and more. He led the early service-oriented architecture and cloud architecture incubation initiatives for Microsoft, which led to Azure. Our conversation covers a wide range of topics including Neo, Bitcoin, developing software, scaling infrastructure, multi-chain and interoperability, and much more. We begin our conversation by discussing John's background and his experience leading teams at Microsoft. John discusses how his time at Microsoft gave him insight into how to scale infrastructure and how to create tools for developer communities. Our conversation transitions to discussing developers. John explains general misconceptions and the network effects of programming languages. We discuss why we should be building developer tools in the crypto-space to attract millions of developers globally to the blockchain. Our next conversation topic centered around Bitcoin. John illustrates the importance of Bitcoin and how Bitcoin is an institution. We also discuss general misunderstandings traditional technologists have about blockchain and the major themes they fail to grasp. John excellently discusses the developer ecosystem of the blockchain space and why we attract nontraditional builders. Our next conversation topic was centered around code and auditing code. John gives great insights into how you should think about code and what to look for when auditing a project's code. We transitioned from blockchain and web3 to discuss web2. John discusses why web2 was a bad detour for humanity. John illustrates how web2 evolved from being focused on user-generated content to surveillance capitalism. Another major topic of discussion was the possible applications of web3 protocols and projects. One area we discussed was the application of the protocols to municipalities and other government organizations. We finish our conversation discussing interoperability and the future of multichain. John excellently demonstrates why we are headed to a multichain world and the difficulties we face implementing interoperability. This was an amazing conversation with so many insights from general software scaling to Bitcoin to web3. Please enjoy my conversation with John deVadoss. -- ParaSwap: If you want to make a swap at the best price across the DeFi market, check out https://untoldstories.link/paraswap. As the adoption of blockchain technology grows around the world, so have the barriers between blockchains in different countries and regions. Much like the internet, which started out as small sets of nodes in universities before expanding globally to form an interconnected and far more useful World Wide Web, blockchain nodes — now distributed across the globe — are in need of greater interoperability. “At the end of the day, the primary catalyst for blockchain is really its connectivity [and] it's about decentralization,'' said John DeVadoss, the co-founder of InterWork Alliance (IWA), in a video interview with Forkast.News. The IWA, a non-profit organization working on the adoption of tokens for day-to-day operations, recently announced its merger with the Global Blockchain Business Council. One of the IWA's major projects to connect the blockchain space is building a Token Taxonomy Framework (TTF), which defines a common language, behaviors and properties for tokens. The TTF allows its users to choose what and how much they would use the framework.Blockchain standards and national, unified infrastructure such as China's Blockchain Services Network enhance the connections across global blockchain ecosystems. But mainstream adoption of the technology is still slowed down by other factors. DeVadoss believes that one of the main factors that is stagnating a global blockchain explosion is the misconception of the distributed ledger. “Much of the mainstream enterprise IT world still thinks of blockchain as database because they are unable to see beyond the technology,” DeVadoss said. “There has never been a stack like a blockchain stack because none of them had economic protocols baked inside intrinsically.”Despite what DeVadoss characterizes as a popular misconception of blockchain as a “trust machine,” he still sees the technology as beneficial, with adoption likely to continue exploding in the coming years. “I have seen tremendous amount of uptake through the InterWork Alliance and — of course — now with the GBBC,” DeVadoss said. “There's tremendous amount of latent interest and I think it's going to explode over the next 18 months.”Watch DeVadoss' full interview with Forkast.News Editor-in-Chief Angie Lau to learn more about the IWA's efforts to connect the blockchain space, how the blockchain is changing the business logic, and why data stored on the blockchain can't necessarily be trusted.

I have just the activity to help YOU chase away the winter blues! It involves taking 15 minutes of your time and watching the birds in your backyard. This activity my friends is called the Great Backyard Bird Count and it is happening this year on February 12-15th 2021. This activity is coordinated by the National Audubon Society and other organizations to serve as an instant snapshot of birdlife around the world. Since bird populations are constantly changing, the information you collect from the GBBC helps scientist understand how birds are affected by environmental changes. The data collected over the years can display how certain species' of bird populations are increasing or decreasing. It can also show scientists what kinds of birds are inhabiting cities and suburbs compared to the natural areas. In this episode, I am visiting with Dr. Matthew Springer, our Assistant Extension Professor of Wildlife Management with the University of Kentucky to get the scoop on what all is involved with this Great Backyard Bird Count! Dr. Matthew Springer, Assistant Extension Professor of Wildlife Management Before we dive into today's content, I have a favor to ask! If you enjoy listening to the Sunshine Gardening Podcasts, let me know with a REVIEW on Apple Podcasts! Leaving a review is simple! Remember to mark the calendar for the Great Backyard Bird Count happening February 12th until February 15th because it's a fun and rewarding experience for people of all ages! It encourages gardeners to venture outside….or they can watch inside from their kitchen window! If you would like to participate in other bird counts, Dr. Springer also mentioned about the Christmas Bird Count. This is the third and final episode in our series of three talks we did at the Odyssey Hackathon in our home town Groningen, earlier this year. Today’s guest is Sandra Ro, a derivatives-trader-turned-crypto-evangelist, entrepreneur, angel investor, and CEO of the Global Blockchain Business Council. GBBC’s mission is to educate governments, regulators and executives at large corporations about “this thing called blockchain that can be very confusing at times”. We talk about peer-to-peer transfer of value, tokenization and incentives models, provenance and anti-counterfeiting and about ecosystem development. We also talk about regulation: “Of course there has to be regulation. There have to be rules to the game. Self-regulation does not work. The greed is real.” Sandra is enthusiastic about the opportunities blockchain offers to repair the shortcomings of capitalism: “The system today does not work very well when you are poor. This technology can change that.” She also shares an interesting cultural observation: “The culture in this [blockchain] space is much more cooperative, much more about growing the pie together. And it is very interesting to see [here] that this culture is now starting to impact big businesses. I have already seen cooperations that I never thought would exist. Blockchain has already changed the world. It has already changed mindsets, and that is often the most difficult part of change.”

Ep.14 – Blockchain use cases outside of insurance For this week’s podcast we go out of the insurance world to explore some interesting blockchain use cases and pilots in other industries. In episode 6 we had Ryan Rugg introduce us to R3 the banking blockchain consortium. But for this one we wanted to go out a little bit further. As our guide for this journey we had the pleasure of having Lee Brenner, Chief Engagement Office at the Global Blockchain Business Council, live from Pennsylvania!     2 Minute Definition of Blockchain Blockchain technology is a decentralised database that is connected together to create a permanent unchangeable record of data that is loaded onto blocks. Those individual blocks of data are connected to other blocks of data (ie. chained together) on this database. Blockchains act as global notary. Eliminates the middle man by creating a system of trust and a level of confidence between the actors on the system allowing for P2P transactions.   The Global Blockchain Business Council The Global Blockchain Business Council (GBBC) came out of a meeting of thought leaders (blockchain, government and different industries) hosted by Richard Branson on Nectar Island to really think through how blockchain technology can affect civic society. The idea of a global institution that unites individuals from the business community and from the blockchain community. The GBBC tries to advocate on behalf of the broader ecosystem to regulators around the world that if they try to regulate blockchain that it is done from an educated point of view. Another aspect of the GBBC is engaging with government questions on who they should be talking to if either they want to get advice on blockchain or if they want to implement a blockchain solution such as on a land trust or a voting system for example. The GBBC can advice them on which companies can help government implement that whether it’s a startup or an enterprise. They can also share interesting case studies from the business world or from other countries. The GBBC thus tries to build a broad network from the blockchain industry, the business world, to governments and regulators and to NGOs and charities.   Uses cases Business Processes & Payments - BitPesa A good example of how blockchain technology can be used in sectors outside of insurance is Bitpesa. Bitpesa tries to answer the question “how can we make financial transactions in Africa more efficient and secure?”. The current system is one were transactions are extremely slow, numerous intermediaries are involved, high costs and in general a very inefficient system. Bitpesa created a blockchain solution that has built in data privacy, minimal fees and is mobile based thus providing the unbanked in Africa with financial solutions. This provides their customers the ability to make P2P transactions and regulators with automatic real time auditing.   Logistics & Supply Chain: Walmart Walmart has started to use blockchain technology in their supply chain. An example of this was used for tracking pork from Chinese producers to the store front. Walmart wanted to track the origins of the meat and its location in transit along the supply chain. This process would usually take days but with blockchain it could be achieved in minutes. Applying this technology to the Chinese market was an important move for Walmart as Chinese shoppers remain sceptical of the quality of domestic food products, after various food-related scandals, such as one involving baby milk formula tainted with industrial chemical melamine, dominated headlines for weeks in 2017. Now Chinese shoppers will be able to scan the food in Walmart shops to see the entire history of the food from farm to store: Healthcare – MediLedger How can patients' medical records be stored, tracked and verified on the blockchain? How can we move from a paperless system to a very secure blockchain one?
