First off, I want to say thank you to everyone who has been a guest on the podcast and to everyone who listens or reads the show notes. I am shocked that we have 150 episodes. I started this podcast because I felt like I didn't have a voice as a designer and wanted to share other's stories and experiences, no matter their expertise. And we do just that! But I wouldn't be here without you, so thank you. For this episode I decided to bring in my close friend, Jordan Gill to chat with me about 5 things I've learned in the design world since starting my podcast. Here's what we covered on the episode: 1. You Bring Something to the Table That No One Else Does How Jordan and I met through working on a launch for an affiliate program together, ran in the same online space and ended up bonding over a not so good client experience Jordan's take on me as a designer and what I bring to the table that is different from other designers Lesson number 1 that I've learned and want to share about the design world is that you are different and bring something to the table that someone else doesn't bring The key to your identity is understanding who you are, what you want out of a job or business and understanding that you are different How I've never thought of myself as good when it comes to branding but that's not true, and how I am good when it comes to branding digital offers — you might have a skill that you don't consider your best, but that doesn't mean you're bad at it I touch on the branding work I'm doing for the podcast and how I think it's important to try different things before solidifying your brand The story of my client, Edie, who came to me wanting to do VIP Days and how I told her to go test it out first instead of building a whole brand around it because she might decide she didn't like it or it didn't work for her 2. Connecting with others in Your Industry Will Help You Go Far Thing number 2 I've learned about the design world is to always be connecting with others because you don't know where a connection could At the beginning of each episode, I share how I connected with each of my guests to reiterate how important building relationships are in your industry, especially with people who have complimentary skills to your own My favorite story to tell is how I got my first sales page project by investing in online courses and connecting on Facebook with someone I didn't even know who posted about needing a graphic designer How reaching out and raising my hand helped me get my first sales page project, and led me to getting referrals to all the all-stars in the online space back in 2013/2014 We discuss how people underutilize the relationships they have because they don't want to bother people or seem like they're needing too much, when in reality you should utilize the relationships you've built When you start connecting with people, you have to go in knowing that it could lead to a great relationship, or it could lead to sales — don't go into it with expectations of it going a certain way, because it might not 3. You ARE Good Enough The third thing I've learned in the design world is that most of us, especially in the beginning or when we're going through a transition, think that we're not good enough which is not true at all We think we aren't good enough because somewhere along the way we were told to look at everyone from the competition and there wasn't/isn't enough Design Industry 101 training that teaches you about the different rules, the different projects, how marketing goes with design, etc. I share that I recorded my first episode for the podcast in April 2019 but didn't post it until October 2019 because I was scared and didn't think I was good enough If you don't think you're good enough, go out and get projects 4. Your Work Creates a Bigger Impact Than You Think it Does The fourth thing I've learned in the design world is that you don't realize how big of an impact your work actually has when your head is down and you're doing the work I share one example of how I got to see the impact of my work after creating a sales page for Kimra Luna which helped increased her sales, connected me with another client and how I heard from multiple people at events that they bought Kimra's program because of my sales page design How you should update your portfolio with 3 or 4 projects you can tell stories about and include projects that feature the kind of work you want to get I want to take my conversion design skills to the beauty and skin care industry, so if you live it that world, send me a DM It's Okay to Love What You Do and Get Super Rich Doing It (And Don't Give Up!) The fifth thing I've learned and want you all to know is that it's okay to love what you do, and get super rich doing it and that you should never give up You are talented and the talent you have in the world matters, no matter what your experience is and if you don't have the experience you want, go get it We recap my 5 main points during this episode which were to truly understand yourself and not be afraid to test things, always be connecting with those in your life and industry, know that you are good enough, realize that the work you do has an impact and know that it's okay to love what you do and get rich doing it Even if you are in a season of life that is difficult or changing, just keep going — working a little bit each day is better than giving up on the impact that you could be giving people It's important to acknowledge that I haven't been feeling like myself for a while so I can remember to be patient with myself instead of feeling sorry for myself — it's okay not to feel okay sometimes I talk about how I've kept the podcast going this long and through my recent life events because I want to practice what I preach and I understand that sharing the message and stories of other creators is important and has a bigger impact If you have any questions, comments or feedback, I love DMs on Instagram so send me a message — share this episode on your story and tag me or Jordan's Instagram so we know you listened to this episode or read the show notes Links mentioned: The Design Business Show - Episode 61 The Design Business Show - Episode 131 Connect with me on Instagram Connect with Jordan on Instagram Like what you heard? This episode goes over a list of 6 of the things I've learned in the last year from interviewing almost 50 widows! The word "Grit" is in my opening Statement: Grit is a noun defined as to have the drive and stamina to push through any challenge or obstacle thrown your way until you succeed. But, In order to have that stamina you need to condition, and in conditioning is recovery, rest and self-care. You need that recovery in order to keep driving that path to success! Quotes from today's Episode: "Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work." ~Stephen King "Don't work for recognition but do work worthy of recognition". ~H. Jackson Brown, Jr. "Success isn't always about greatness. It's about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come." ~Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson "We think, mistakenly, that success is the result of the amount of time we put in at work, instead of the quality of time we put in." ~ Ariana Huffington This is always one I need to hear. Sometimes slowing down a bit and taking an extra minute or two makes it right instead of just fast. Efficiency is wonderful when it's married with speed. But in that order. Speed should only be the cherry on the cake, not the driving value. Do you want to hear “Get shit done right” or “Get shit done fast, and it's almost half right”? Focusing on growth and development as a manager with my current team. Ways I work with them vs. ways I focus on their development. Growth I've seen in myself as a leader or person of authority, type of manager. Me now at 33 vs. me 10 years ago as 23 year old me: I just wanted to make several Stazie soldiers. Douglas made the joke, “That would be a lot of pink”!!! Now I've gained more patience and respect for those who are only just learning. What is best going to serve me is a team of capable humans not a team that I always have to tell them what to do. In this episode I share with you some important words of wisdom about running a business. This comes from a LinkedIn post by Dave Borski: 8 years ago today, I left a great job at SwRI to pursue my dreams of starting a business. It's been a winding road with lots of challenges, victories and defeats. Popcorn list of Things I've learned since then: Payroll doesn't happen with a push of a button Annual Health insurance premium for a self-employed family is on par with paying cash for a nice 2-year old Honda Accord every year Premiums don't cover your deductible, and lots of services are not covered Finding good partners/suppliers is critical to early growth You need a lot of money (or access to it) to make big projects run before the client pays you Nobody can sell your business as well as you can You can hire better people than you to work the components of your business. It's better to be the architect of your business than the manager Self motivation is a key - but you have to plan for it to work It's great to have a mentor (or a few) who are invested in your success; it's even greater if they've been successful and know what it takes It's important to say no when your strategic plan doesn't allow for it Dave Borski's LinkedIn profile Items used in this video: PLC Trainer Get the full details of this podcast. This May marks the 10-year anniversary of the publication of my first book, The Way of the Happy Woman. One of the ways I'm celebrating is to share two episodes here on the podcast, where I reflect on the ten things I've learned since then. Those of you who have been part of this community during this time know that I've been on quite a journey. A journey of tremendous heartbreak, healing, and transformation. In every sense, I've had to learn at the deepest level what I've been teaching and writing about. As a result, I'm a very different person than I was ten years ago. And, at the same time, I'm still very much– and even more of– myself. It was hard to distill all I've learned into just ten things, but I did my best! I hope you enjoy part two of this conversation. Medical conditions bring a lot of change and knowledge to your life. Brittany gives insight into what she has learned over the years from having her chronic conditions.
In September last year, I started some new writing groups. Even though my role is facilitator and training, I have learned a lot about writing itself. Here are 11 ideas that came to mind: 1. Writing is annoying and rewarding. 2. Writing shared is writing halved. 3. Ignore the basics. 4. Set up for success. 5. Share your progress. 6. Imagine you're being paid. 7. Aesthetics matters. 8. Social media is a gateway to more writing. 9. Regular writing will help your career. 10. Stop. 11. Writing never ends. Intro Here are some things that Randy has learned over the last couple of years since starting his podcast. Learn from these experiences to save yourself time and money. What are some things people may look over when starting their podcast? Use tools that are easily transferable . Record in WAV or any uncompressed audio format in general. This will serve as your source file that you'll archive and backup. Think of this as the studio master of your album - how the record industry stores musical art. Backup your show notes and each episode's cover art. These backups don't have to be tricky at all - I don't think I've ever mentioned how I back up my episodes, but the episode are mainly like a Word document style (Rich Text Format), they consist of one Square cover art image relevant to the current episode, and then the audio file that was recorded. Those are placed into a folder, then I ZIP/Compress that folder and name it S:X:EX and I put them in a folder of the Season name, back it up to my NAS and then in One Drive. This way, if i change hosts or for some reason stop podcasting, I don't have to think twice if my host will delete me for inactivity, because I can always just resurrect any episode at a later date and re-upload a fresh copy. What audio gear do I use and have my recommendations changed? Better products are coming out all of the time, so I have a couple more audio recommendations that I can throw out there to produce your podcast in the most efficient way possible. I am still using my solid PreSonus Series III mixer - this thing is a beast and has never let me down. USB microphones are still great and I can highly recommend the PreSonus Revelator USB-C Microphone. This thing has a built-in mixer and voice effects that don't actually sound like crap. To be completely honest, I probably would've purchased this first before going all-out on a mixer when starting this podcast, had the Revelator existed them. This thing is outstanding for the money - $150 There are similar competitors, such as the Shure MV7, ($250) and this mic sounds great as well. However, for the price, and hearing a side-by-side comparison, I think the Revelator wins. This is coming from Shure fan, meets a PreSonus fan - I use Shure mics on all of my drums. I still think the Revelator is the better of the two. Luckily for PreSonus Revelator users, it includes my all-time favorite DAW, StudioOne 5 Artist (which retails for $99), from which you can produce your podcast episodes, as well as music if you wanted. Do you need the host with the most? On average, I've changed hosts each year. I'm on my third host, and it's one of the big dogs - Spotify's Anchor.fm platform. It's free, but does it give me the most? In my situation, yes I believe it does - it's free and I use it in the exact manner I used my previous, paid-hosts. On my last day in Colorado, I share five lessons I've learned about myself and the world (11:34). But before that, I read an essay explaining why making mistakes as a young person is actually a really good thing. To read the five lessons, check out TheTroyFarkasShow.com first thing in the morning tomorrow. If you liked today's show, please consider leaving a review on Apple Podcasts or on our website. We've got a big few weeks ahead, so feel free to follow @thetroyfarkasshow on Instagram and TikTok for all the latest show-related information. Today's essay: No one wants to make mistakes. We don't intentionally mess up on the job, make a wrong turn, or go on a date with that weird guy from Hinge. But for all of us, especially young people, mistakes can create invaluable learning experiences. Take advantage of them. The Stoics lived by a saying, “amor fati,” or, “love of fate.” This means that when we make a mistake, or if something bad happens to us, we shouldn't feel sorry for ourselves or cast blame. Instead, the Stoics would argue, if we shift our perception, we can turn those obstacles into opportunities. If we “love” and become grateful for that misfortune, we then can focus on learning from it rather than getting upset by it. So the next time you regret an Amazon purchase, don't hate yourself over it. Try taking a step back and saying to yourself, “You know what? I'm glad this happened. In fact, I love that this happened.” By changing your viewpoint, maybe you'll understand you don't need as much as you think. Or you'll realize you can't spend your way to happiness, and that no amount of cool stuff will ever fill the voids in your life. We don't have enough life experience yet to do everything right, so mistakes are inevitable. Embrace them. Own up to them. Most importantly, don't beat yourself up. No one expects you to have this all figured out now. And the best part? The stakes are low. In 10 years, that might not be the case. Right now, mistakes are the best thing that can happen to you. If you view them correctly, the next time you're faced with a similar situation, you'll do better, and be better, for it. Fall in love with your mistakes.

Philosophy is often too abstract, but the Existentialists are known for being (a bit) more practical occasionally. Here are 5 useful things we can learn from the Existentialists and existentialism, specifically Soren Kierkegaard, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Albert Camus. They are: Laugh at yourself (looking at Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground and Camus' Myth of Sisyphus) Stop Thinking (looking at Kierkegaard's ‘leap of faith', ‘passionate action', and ‘subjective truth') Be Creative (looking at Nietzsche and Heidegger, authenticity, the ‘They') All of our Projects are Connected: Treat them like Rocks (looking at Sartre) Turn off Autopilot (Looking at Kierkegaard and ‘double reflection') Full article: http://lewwaller.com/5-useful-things-... Three areas where you can gain confidence and as a result move forward spiritually!
Over the last 7 years I have been on this entrepreneur journey of learning how to be a true business owner. I actually dipped my toe in 2 years prior, but really got serious about it after being laid off my job in 2014. Over the years, I have learned a great deal & still learning so much. The last 12 months has had me really evaluating my journey as an entrepreneur, to the point I felt the need to share today's email on the 12 Things I've Learned Transitioning From Employee To Entrepreneurship. Though there are many more than 12, I wanted to share those lessons on the forefront of my mind.

Considering Mr. Smith was the only other person in the household, he graciously obliged. He will be missed greatly but he's off to accomplish some big dreams, so join us on this farewell episode where we take a nostalgic walk through the last eight years. I turn the tables and interview him on the biggest lessons he's learned over the years, how he feels our relationship has grown, his perspective as a cis-gendered male speaking to a largely cis-gendered female audience, and so very much more. The first official episode date for this podcast was 4th April, 2016 - I’ve been going for 5 years! At the time of recording I have 30 x self-published books: 16 x psychological thrillers 10 x sci-fi 4 x nonfiction I’ve written more books than that - 9 x versions of nonfiction titles + 3 crazy project titles that I will never reveal ... so 42 if you count those. I’ve made money - however little - from all of them. Here are ten observations and learnings from the 5 years I've been podcasting about my self-publishing journey.

I started The Plan on Purpose Podcast with the thought that I would tell the story of creatives in the planner community and show a side that goes beyond the photos and videos. Is it now a community of planner lovers, journalers, and creators of all types that show up to relate to one another every week. This week, I tell the story of how the podcast started and how starting scared has helped me grow in an uncomfortable space.
