In this episode of Future Tech, filmmaker Jason Sherman speaks with Al Holland, NASA's longtime senior operational psychologist, about the human systems behind spaceflight. Holland helped shape how astronauts are selected, trained, and supported for long-duration missions, including the International Space Station and future missions to Mars. Drawing from decades of experience at NASA, Holland discusses how astronauts were selected and trained for long-duration missions, why teamwork and self-regulation matter as much as technical skill, and how isolation, sleep disruption, and separation from family quietly shape performance in space. He also reflects on early astronaut training at places like the Johnsville Centrifuge and how lessons from Cold War research continue to influence modern missions to the International Space Station and future journeys to Mars. This conversation is part of the ongoing research and storytelling behind the documentary “Before the Moon”, which explores the hidden places, people, and systems that made human spaceflight possible.

It's like, it's wearing me down... I can't get past the headlights. Weeelllll, I might be able to get past the headlights." - Brandt Krueger"So the guy basically insinuates 'I'm on the employer's dime. And I get it, right? We don't want to be able to just type in, make a Fatboy Slim song... But I'm just trying to say, I like the style of Fatboy Slim. I made a really dumb decision." - Will Curran (regarding MacOX Tahoe)"I've never liked the [AirPod] design with that stick sticking out. Like as dorky as my Bose look... They said 'This feature is great for concerts where you can record your reaction and the stage' and I go no no no no no." - Will Curran"It felt kind of ordinary, to be perfectly honest." - Brandt Krueger (on the overall keynote)
Max talks with Bret Koebbe, Vice President of Sporty's Pilot Shop, about how Starlink internet access is entering general aviation cockpits and what that means for pilots today and in the future. For decades, cockpit connectivity was mostly reserved for the airlines. Systems like Gogo provided limited bandwidth, required expensive antennas, and were impractical for piston aircraft. GA pilots relied on ADS-B weather, portable receivers, or Iridium text messaging to stay connected. That landscape has shifted with the Starlink Mini, a portable satellite dish small enough to fit in a 182 or Cirrus, delivering broadband internet in flight. Benefits for Pilots Bret outlines the legitimate safety advantages. Pilots can text family or FBOs, update arrival times, and share real-time position updates. More importantly, Starlink could enable widespread filing of PIREPs directly from an iPad, improving weather data for all. Weather cameras, now integrated into ForeFlight, could become accessible in flight, offering pilots actual visual conditions instead of relying solely on METARs or AWOS reports. Risks and Distractions But Starlink also poses serious distraction risks. Bret shares a personal story: during a family trip, he streamed an NFL game mid-flight, only to realize within seconds how dangerously it diverted his attention. He immediately shut it off, but the experience was a powerful reminder of how alluring the technology is. Max underscores that the NTSB lists distractions as a top factor in loss-of-control accidents, and Starlink could easily become an “attractive nuisance” in cockpits. Cost and Service Plans Starlink Mini hardware is about $499, and the Local Priority plan runs $65/month for 50 GB, sufficient for most piston pilots. For corporate pilots and jets, the Global Priority plan at $250/month supports higher speeds and offshore operations. Bret explains the differences in speed limitations (350 mph for Local Priority vs 550 mph for Global Priority) and how to choose based on aircraft type and mission. Mounting and Power Solutions Because Starlink Mini lacks an internal battery, powering it is key. Bret recommends Sporty's Flight Gear Max Battery, capable of outputting 140 watts via USB-C, giving about three hours of Starlink runtime. For longer flights, higher-capacity solutions exist. Mounting options include suction cup mounts for rear windows (ideal in high-wing Cessnas and Cirrus aircraft) or side-window solutions in low-wing and corporate jets. Positioning is critical—blocking the dish with wings can cause dropouts. Practical Tips Bret offers pilot-tested tips: Create a custom iPad Focus Mode that blocks notifications except for critical texts when ForeFlight is open. Establish SOPs—use Starlink only in cruise and disconnect before descent. Enable Low Data Mode on devices to prevent iCloud or app background syncing from eating up gigabytes. Don't rely on Starlink radar or traffic feeds, which have even more latency than ADS-B. The Future of Connected Cockpits Looking ahead, Bret sees huge potential. Automatic turbulence reporting from onboard sensors could update in real time if aircraft have internet connections. Engine monitor data could be streamed to ground support for diagnostics, offering pilots in-flight decision support. Eventually, Starlink-enabled cockpits could complement FAA datalink systems like CPDLC, streamlining communication and safety services. Final Thoughts This milestone Episode 400 illustrates how cockpit technology continues to evolve rapidly. Affordable internet access brings new possibilities for safety, convenience, and passenger comfort, but it also requires disciplined use to prevent dangerous distractions. As Bret and Max agree, the future of aviation will be defined by how responsibly pilots integrate these new tools. Whether you fly a piston single, a turboprop, or a corporate jet, Starlink is likely to shape your cockpit experience in the coming years. This episode gives pilots the knowledge to make informed decisions as they consider adopting Starlink for their aircraft. In this very special episode of Future Tech, I speak with former NASA astronaut, fighter pilot, engineer, and professor Terry J. Hart about his extraordinary journey from the Air Force and Bell Labs to piloting the Space Shuttle Challenger on the first-ever satellite repair mission. We dive into his role operating the Canadarm to capture and repair the Solar Max satellite, the intense training that prepared him for high-stakes moments in space, and the lessons he brought back to Earth about engineering, teamwork, and problem-solving under pressure. Terry also shares how his experiences now fuel his work mentoring the next generation of aerospace innovators at Lehigh University, offering rare insight into the people and preparation behind historic space missions.
I am excited to bring this conversation to you all today! Kerry Chavez is an exceptionally sharp scholar at the United States Air Force Academy working on research related to national security and future tech. While she has published quite a bit looking at the use of drones and their effect on the battlefield, her work has also taken her into the realms of AI, quantum computing and a bunch of other fascinating topics. In this wide ranging discussion, Kerry introduces us to some of the major developments and debates surrounding emerging and disruptive technologies in the national security realm. We discuss the use of drones by non-state actors and the geopolitical implications of that development, Kerry briefs us on quantum computing and its potential impact on intelligence and operational security, and work to separate fact from fiction or reality from hype on a lot of these technologies. Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, Point Break) joined forces with writer James Cameron (Titanic, Terminator 2, Avatar) to craft a dark vision of the future....this was released in '95 and the story takes place four years in the future on the eve of New Year's Eve '99. This particular story takes place in a beleaguered Los Angeles beset with violence where the latest vice of choice are "squids" which are virtual reality discs that can deliver any number of visceral experiences for those who get "jacked" into experiencing them. Lennny (Ralph Fiennes) is a purveyor of such squids as he sells them around the LA underworld....until one night, he is provided a mysterious one which portrays something horrible occuring to some one he knows. Is it real? Why did he receive it? And where does it lead? And this kicks off a tense mystery thriller not only involving Lenny but his best friend Mace (Angela Bassett) and his former love Faith (Juliette Lewis) among several others....the stacked cast also includes Michael Wincott, Glenn Plummer, Vincent D'Onofrio, William Fichtner, and the late, great Tom Sizemore.
