National Soaring Museum - Elmira NY - Staycation Destinations The Soaring Museum is an interesting placed to visit any time, but the week ahead (July 6-13) has a unique event while comes to our listening area only once every four years. Some two dozen motorless aircraft "descend" on Elmira, New York for the International Vintage Sailplane Meet. The event is free and open to the public. Sailplanes are more than "gliders". Gliders are towed into the air and remain aloft only as long as they can resist gravity. Sailplanes though are specially engineered to catch the updrafts and wind currents so they can stay aloft much longer. Local aviation historian Traff Doherty is our guest for this week's "Staycation Destinations". He provides: details about the experiences for spectators of the Sailplane Meet history of how the unpowered planes were used, especially in wartime why Harris Hill and Elmira became the center of the national Sailplane community more about the National Soaring Museum, for anyone who wants to visit -- during the Meet, or beyond those eight days For further information: This month's Sailplane Meet: details about July 6-13 National Soaring Museum: guest information (the museum is open year-round, Wednesdays through Sundays) America's "Soaring Capital": the history of how motorless aviation developed in the Elmira region The U.S. Soaring Hall of Fame: the people & their stories
Martin Jovanoski has been flying his entire life. Sailplanes, Hang gliders, Paragliders- in any and all forms. He got started in accuracy, moved into cross country competitions and pretty much does it all when it comes to free-flight. He's one of the big reasons Krushevo, Macedonia has become such a mecca for competitions, and he instructs, guides, flies tandems, designs wings, consults and more. I've been lucky enough to compete with Martin many times in World Cups and hands down Martin is the cream of the crop when it comes to unabashed love for our sport. He's always got the biggest smile on launch. He's the pilot who seems to have retained that first flight wonder of flying we all have throughout his long and very storied career.
Joe Aldrian joins us first to share his adventures. Joe started his aviation journey flying Sailplanes in the Airforce. He would then go on to fly many aircraft and currently is a captain flying the 787. Joe has logged almost 20,000 hours in the air so, as you can imagine he has alot to share with us Today. Also on this episode we have a new segment from Sergio the Soaring Master and this one is titled "Hilly Terrain" Join us now for another soaring adventure! www.patreon.com/soaringthesky
On Today's episode we head to Belgium to chat with Wim DeCrooK, a competition paraglider pilot with over 1000 hours. Before finding his sweet spot in the cockpit of a sailplane, Wim competed alot! He was ranked 2nd in the Serial class at the British open in Spain in 2019 and 3rd overall at the Mossella Open in France also in that same year. His best soaring season in a paraglider he flew more than 140 hours. These are just some of his accomplishments. Wim will share some of his adventures & experiences, like the time he ended up being stuck between two thunderstorms and some how managing to escape and land unharmed! Another time he found himself landing in a swamp and soon after standing in his underwear pulling off leeches from his body. Wim has learned alot about soaring and talks about his transition into a glider and what we all can learn from this amazing journey! www.soaringthesky.com
Ian Brubaker started his aviation journey in 2006, first flying powered in Cessnas, then sailplanes, and then moving on to hang gliders. Hang gliding has been his primary form of aviation for the past several years and he has been teaching it since 2015, holding a basic instructor and tandem rating. Ian also holds a B.S. in Space Physics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Ian's passion and expertise is to make flying easy to understand and fun to learn by leveraging both his practical and theoretical background of aviation. Ian Joins our Producer Mitch to chat about his adventures flying Sailplanes, Hang Gliders and what he enjoys about each one and what we can learn from flying different types of aircraft. Later on the podcast our friend Sergio, The Soaring Master brings us another segment and this one talks about the 5 ways we can improve our soaring. Join us now for episode 114 of Soaring The Sky, a glider pilot's podcast. www.soaringthesky.com www.patreon.com/soaringthesky
Martin is a local star in Krushevo and gives loads of information about his site, the area and countries around it, competitions (gin wide open and the world's), flying Sailplanes and acro. He clarifies how great and easy it is to travel and fly in Northern Macedonia. Martin, born in 1990, started flying at age 11 and has been multiple competition winner. He knows a lot about our sport! See his excellent website Flymacedonia.Com
If it flies, Andy Hediger flies it (or jumps out of it!). Sailplanes, trikes, hang gliders, light-weight airplanes, wingsuits, Swift, Archaeopteryx, Virus, but he rates the paraglider as the king of them all. The developer of the D-Bag, Andy was there at the absolute beginning of Acro and cross country, sewing some of the very first wings and his passion and love of the sport is as strong now as it was in the beginning. The "Airman" has pushed the limits of flying, safety, instruction and certification from the advent of the sport and was one of the first pilots to develop SIV to help make the sport more safe, and why most schools still get it wrong and why so many accidents keep happening.

Airplanes without engines. Gliders. Sailplanes. Soaring. There’s a special and historic place in a beautiful part of upstate New York that that you may not heard of before. A place that is VERY special in the “un-powered” world of aviation and, if you like unique and timeless aviation, I think you’ll find this interesting. This … Continue reading 02 – Soaring and the National Soaring Museum
Howard Torode, Chairman, Tehcnical Committee, British Gliding Association and Afandi Darlington, Senior Inspector of Air Accidents (Engineering), AAIB speak about gliding and soaring having held a mutual relationship with mainstream aviation developments ever since the experiments of Sir George Cayley in 1852, through to the birth of modern aviation in the 1900’s and to the present day. This lecture discussed the experiences of sailplane designers throughout the twentieth century, in pursuit of higher aerodynamic performance, and compare these with parallel application of similar technologies in mainstream aircraft design. Howard and Afandi drew on well known aerospace design philosophies, and showed examples of how they have been equally applied to the design of sailplanes, including the benefits and lessons learnt. The lecture also demonstrated how the continuing technological developments have enabled sailplane pilots to continue to expand their wide soaring horizons. The speakers concluded with a forward look at how sailplanes might be developed into the future using both evolutionary and disruptive technology.
