Harri Koskinen is a man of many talents. Born in 1970 in Karstula, Finland, with a populations of a population of 3,625 is located in Central Finland. Harri studied design came to Helsinki city to st at the Institute of Art & Design. He's best known as a leading innovator of Nordic design for, among other things, his award-winning Block Lamp, the familiar light build inside a rectangular brick of glass, which is exhibited in New York's Museum of Modern Art. He has designed furniture, packaging, pots & pans, turntables, hotel rooms internationally & many other immersive spaces, but most importantly for us here at iMMERSE!, the Genelec 8000-series of speakers for cutting-edge sound systems. Soon being released, Genelec headphones. I met Harri in New York City in the first years of this century. He had designed a traveling show of Finnish design and engineered the installations. Typical of Nordic society, Finnish designers have worked together for decades to build on their shared values of several generations. Similarly, Finnish architects and orchestra conductors generate a wave of multigenerational forces. Sweetly, the meaning of architect Alvar Aalto's family name. Mr. Wave. Later, Harri gave a home to a MorrowSound 3D showroom system in his Helsinki design company offices. We have collaborated on the show Sound Glass Space 2012 in the Akusmata Gallery in Helsinki and on a floating chair for listening to 3D sound. Harri's design includes sound, light and physical materials. How fitting that he named his company, Friends of Industry ltd. Topics discussed: first immersive experience, biking through woods, Finnish countryside, milk cans, playing bass, LPs, ACDC, Genulec speakers, design of sound systems, art, glass

Discover his unconventional entry into saxophone at 14 and his meteoric rise after touring with Diane Schuur. But Patrick's talent isn't confined to melodies. He's a dynamic entrepreneur. From sound companies to concert promotion, he's a force in the industry. For Patrick, risk-taking and unwavering self-belief are paramount in this journey. He unveils the dichotomy of a musician's life - the love for performing, juxtaposed with the business intricacies, from contracts to travel hassles. Patrick's vibrant spirit shines on stage, leaving audiences spellbound. We explore his diverse career, each job a stepping stone to independence. Find out who his guiding light is and who his cherished influence is. Tune in as Patrick dispels the partying stereotype, revealing the dedication at the upper echelons. Tune in and be swept away by the magic of Patrick Lamb's musical journey! Episode Highlights:23:05 - This has been a very humbling experience for me because I've toured with all these artists. You need to show up and it's sold out. You recognize every single concert is a huge opportunity. In fact, the commerce is connection, connect with those people.30:08 - The business is challenging, but it is what it is. I can't say I love the contracting and as you know, there's a lot of phone calls, diplomacy and dealing with people who are wonderful and people are a challenge sometimes. There's a lot of egos. And so, you have to work around that and learn how to deal with that. Ego stands for Edging God Out. 46:41 - I tried to counter because there are a lot of stereotypes associated with music. If you had to ask a hundred people what are the things associated with musicians. They're drinkers, they're partiers, they do drugs, they're unhealthy. But I find that on the upper levels that that's not generally, not the case, at least the people I'm working with. It's become more you have to be on time, you have to have your business together.ContactFresh Coast Jazz FestivalPatrick Lamb
In this episode we welcome Sounds legends Sandy Robertson and Edwin (Savage Pencil) Pouncey into our Hammersmith lair and ask them about their careers and shared fascination with the occult. After describing their routes into writing and their days at Sounds, Sandy and Edwin reflect on the dark history of occult rock from Black Widow to Norway's Black Metal scene, via Jimmy Page, Kenneth Anger and Aleister "the Beast" Crowley. Clips from the late Andy Gill's 1990 audio interview with Liberty/United Artists executive Andrew Lauder give us an opportunity to honour the Hartlepool-born facilitator of musical freakiness and discuss the many acts he signed and/or A&R'd over the course of 50 years, from Hawkwind and the Groundhogs to the Stranglers and the Stone Roses. After saying our goodbyes to reggae sound-system operator Jah Shaka and small-trio jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, Mark and Jasper run through their highlights among recent additions to the RBP library, including pieces about Nancy Sinatra (1967), the Eagles (1972) and Kim Deal and Tanya Donnelly (1993)... and a 2011 tribute to hip hop star Dwight "Heavy D" Myers. Many thanks to special guests Edwin Pouncey and Sandy Robertson. Find their books, including Edwin's Savage Pencil Scratchbook and Sandy's Aleister Crowley Scrapbook, in all good bookshops. Please note that we recorded this episode before learning of Mark Stewart's death. Pieces discussed: Mister Aleister Crowley, The Primer: Occult rock, David Bowie: White Lines, Black Magic, Andrew Lauder audio, Sound Systems & Jah Shaka, Ahmad Jamal, April Stevens, The Eagles, Shaun Cassidy, Nancy Sinatra, Kim Deal & Tanya Donnelly and Why Heavy D Matters.
For the third episode of Tales From A Disappearing City I am joined once more by my good friend Ian aka Blackmass Plastics. This is the final part of our recent chat. We talk about how free parties and festivals joined with the emerging rave movement in the 90's in the UK as well as the rise of a wide variety of autonomous sound systems. We also discuss how a network of events across Europe and beyond allowed the promotion of underground music through a DIY scene reminiscent of punk in the 1970's. Ian finishes by discussing his move into music production and how he became Blackmass Plastics. This means they have different phonologies. In this episode, your language guide Emily (linguist, PhD), is taking you on a journey into the fascinating field of phonology. How can music change the world? In Sonic Intimacy: Reggae Sound Systems, Jungle Pirate Radio and Grime YouTube Music Videos (Bloomsbury, 2020), Malcolm James, Senior Lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Sussex, introduces the concept of sonic intimacy to think through the social, cultural, and political importance of three key moments in the history of British music. The book blends the history of music, society, and technology to show the moments of community and resistance fostered by the vibe of sound systems and the hype of Jungle Pirate Radio, along with the advent of new modes of engagement fostered by Grime on YouTube. With important implications for the future of critical scholarship, as well as our current cultural context, the book is essential reading for cultural studies and social science scholars, as well as for anyone interested in music and culture. Over 15 years ago Tom wanted a stereo system bigger and louder than his friends, and like many guests on this show, entrepreneurship just happened. Graduating college in 2009, Tom worked a gig literally right after his graduation ceremony, and eventually smaller gigs turned into bigger gigs which turned into a full time job. Early on in his career, Tom invested in digital audio technology versus analog audio which proved to be advantageous for him, his team and clients. Today Tom is the president and lead project manager for Electro Sound Systems, which in 2019, provided audio services for 328 events. Like many of us, Tom was unsure of how the pandemic would play out, but he kept busy and found new ways to generate income. Tom goes on to explain how he became Joe Biden's audio engineer during the presidential campaign and after he was elected President - spending 5 days a week in D.C. away from his family. Listen today to learn more about Tom's entrepreneurial journey and his biggest moment as an audio engineer. Mathias Johansson: "Speakers are really there for one reason and that's to reproduce as faithful as possible the sound that somebody has created for your ear. The idea is that you just amplify the sound it's like a perfect transparent lens to what the artist and the producer for the music has created or has intended for you and the idea is to bring that to your ear".This episode has been binaural recorded, so to experience the 3D Sound Listening Experience, put on your headphones.Full Episode 19: VR For Our Ears: - Dynamic 3D Binaural Audio. Gregory Castellanos is the CEO and founder of Recreation Sound, a company that utilizes the power of sound and technology to promote fun, unity, and wellness. The company's main goal is for artists to be able to replicate sound the way they want their music to be heard. “We'd like to use music, as I mentioned, to bring people closer together. And yeah, partnering and building communities, something that we're really passionate about.” - Gregory Aside from being the CEO and founder of Recreation Sound, Gregory Castellanos is also a performer, musician, artist, and audiophile.
