Discover his unconventional entry into saxophone at 14 and his meteoric rise after touring with Diane Schuur. But Patrick's talent isn't confined to melodies. He's a dynamic entrepreneur. From sound companies to concert promotion, he's a force in the industry. For Patrick, risk-taking and unwavering self-belief are paramount in this journey. He unveils the dichotomy of a musician's life - the love for performing, juxtaposed with the business intricacies, from contracts to travel hassles. Patrick's vibrant spirit shines on stage, leaving audiences spellbound. We explore his diverse career, each job a stepping stone to independence. Find out who his guiding light is and who his cherished influence is. Tune in as Patrick dispels the partying stereotype, revealing the dedication at the upper echelons. Tune in and be swept away by the magic of Patrick Lamb's musical journey! Episode Highlights:23:05 - This has been a very humbling experience for me because I've toured with all these artists. You need to show up and it's sold out. You recognize every single concert is a huge opportunity. In fact, the commerce is connection, connect with those people.30:08 - The business is challenging, but it is what it is. I can't say I love the contracting and as you know, there's a lot of phone calls, diplomacy and dealing with people who are wonderful and people are a challenge sometimes. There's a lot of egos. And so, you have to work around that and learn how to deal with that. Ego stands for Edging God Out. 46:41 - I tried to counter because there are a lot of stereotypes associated with music. If you had to ask a hundred people what are the things associated with musicians. They're drinkers, they're partiers, they do drugs, they're unhealthy. But I find that on the upper levels that that's not generally, not the case, at least the people I'm working with. It's become more you have to be on time, you have to have your business together.ContactFresh Coast Jazz FestivalPatrick Lamb
In this episode we welcome Sounds legends Sandy Robertson and Edwin (Savage Pencil) Pouncey into our Hammersmith lair and ask them about their careers and shared fascination with the occult. After describing their routes into writing and their days at Sounds, Sandy and Edwin reflect on the dark history of occult rock from Black Widow to Norway's Black Metal scene, via Jimmy Page, Kenneth Anger and Aleister "the Beast" Crowley. Clips from the late Andy Gill's 1990 audio interview with Liberty/United Artists executive Andrew Lauder give us an opportunity to honour the Hartlepool-born facilitator of musical freakiness and discuss the many acts he signed and/or A&R'd over the course of 50 years, from Hawkwind and the Groundhogs to the Stranglers and the Stone Roses. After saying our goodbyes to reggae sound-system operator Jah Shaka and small-trio jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, Mark and Jasper run through their highlights among recent additions to the RBP library, including pieces about Nancy Sinatra (1967), the Eagles (1972) and Kim Deal and Tanya Donnelly (1993)... and a 2011 tribute to hip hop star Dwight "Heavy D" Myers. Many thanks to special guests Edwin Pouncey and Sandy Robertson. Find their books, including Edwin's Savage Pencil Scratchbook and Sandy's Aleister Crowley Scrapbook, in all good bookshops. Please note that we recorded this episode before learning of Mark Stewart's death. Pieces discussed: Mister Aleister Crowley, The Primer: Occult rock, David Bowie: White Lines, Black Magic, Andrew Lauder audio, Sound Systems & Jah Shaka, Ahmad Jamal, April Stevens, The Eagles, Shaun Cassidy, Nancy Sinatra, Kim Deal & Tanya Donnelly and Why Heavy D Matters.
For the third episode of Tales From A Disappearing City I am joined once more by my good friend Ian aka Blackmass Plastics. This is the final part of our recent chat. We talk about how free parties and festivals joined with the emerging rave movement in the 90's in the UK as well as the rise of a wide variety of autonomous sound systems. We also discuss how a network of events across Europe and beyond allowed the promotion of underground music through a DIY scene reminiscent of punk in the 1970's. Ian finishes by discussing his move into music production and how he became Blackmass Plastics. This means they have different phonologies. In this episode, your language guide Emily (linguist, PhD), is taking you on a journey into the fascinating field of phonology. How can music change the world? In Sonic Intimacy: Reggae Sound Systems, Jungle Pirate Radio and Grime YouTube Music Videos (Bloomsbury, 2020), Malcolm James, Senior Lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Sussex, introduces the concept of sonic intimacy to think through the social, cultural, and political importance of three key moments in the history of British music. The book blends the history of music, society, and technology to show the moments of community and resistance fostered by the vibe of sound systems and the hype of Jungle Pirate Radio, along with the advent of new modes of engagement fostered by Grime on YouTube. With important implications for the future of critical scholarship, as well as our current cultural context, the book is essential reading for cultural studies and social science scholars, as well as for anyone interested in music and culture. Over 15 years ago Tom wanted a stereo system bigger and louder than his friends, and like many guests on this show, entrepreneurship just happened. Graduating college in 2009, Tom worked a gig literally right after his graduation ceremony, and eventually smaller gigs turned into bigger gigs which turned into a full time job. Early on in his career, Tom invested in digital audio technology versus analog audio which proved to be advantageous for him, his team and clients. Today Tom is the president and lead project manager for Electro Sound Systems, which in 2019, provided audio services for 328 events. Like many of us, Tom was unsure of how the pandemic would play out, but he kept busy and found new ways to generate income. Tom goes on to explain how he became Joe Biden's audio engineer during the presidential campaign and after he was elected President - spending 5 days a week in D.C. away from his family. Listen today to learn more about Tom's entrepreneurial journey and his biggest moment as an audio engineer. Earlier this month, a survey was released, revealing that many Filipino Catholics were calling for better sound systems in their churches. This episode tries to look into that - to offer a better understanding of sound, how it travels, and how it is experienced by people.
Mathias Johansson: "Speakers are really there for one reason and that's to reproduce as faithful as possible the sound that somebody has created for your ear. The idea is that you just amplify the sound it's like a perfect transparent lens to what the artist and the producer for the music has created or has intended for you and the idea is to bring that to your ear".This episode has been binaural recorded, so to experience the 3D Sound Listening Experience, put on your headphones.Full Episode 19: VR For Our Ears: - Dynamic 3D Binaural Audio.

Und immer daran denken, Sharing is caring!! Have you ever wanted your music to come out exactly as what you would want it? Even artists who have spent a great amount of time dealing with music sometimes just can't replicate the exact music quality. It's really something that's difficult to do. Recreation Sound is based on designs on the mathematics and patterns of nature. They're focused on creating products that replicated sound the way artists intend their music to be heard. Gregory Castellanos is the CEO and founder of Recreation Sound, a company that utilizes the power of sound and technology to promote fun, unity, and wellness. The company's main goal is for artists to be able to replicate sound the way they want their music to be heard. “We'd like to use music, as I mentioned, to bring people closer together. And yeah, partnering and building communities, something that we're really passionate about.” - Gregory Aside from being the CEO and founder of Recreation Sound, Gregory Castellanos is also a performer, musician, artist, and audiophile.

Tony Andrews has been building PAs for decades. Today, the soundsystems made by his company Funktion-One are preferred by the world’s best clubs. Their speakers are more iconic than you might expect something so technical to be – a testament to Andrews’ uncompromising vision for how to achieve great sound. Here, Andrews discussed the curse of line arrays, how to prevent what he calls the chainsaw effect, and why listening to music through our phones and other portable devices has ruined our ears.

In the late ‘70’s and into the ‘80’s Hollywood and the Sunset Strip played host to the hair bands and spandex superstars that rocked clubs like the Whiskey and the Roxy night after night. But several miles down the coast, a new sound was emerging; raw, impatient, and not satisfied with the Status Quo. It was in this world that Dave Rat of Rat Sound Systems carved his place as a trusted engineer, with a company that provided the kind of equipment that could match the DIY attitude of the artists and crowds that were showing up to hear bands like Black Flag, Jane’s Addiction, and Rage Against the Machine. After nearly 30 years as the FOH engineer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dave Rat is setting his sights on a life more simple, allowing him to focus more on the company he started when he was just eighteen years old.

Plastician is a London-born legendary DJ who has been at the for front of electronic music for over a decade, transcending genres and scenes from Dubstep & Garage to Grime & Disco having worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, recently dropping a new tune with Skepta. The guys discuss Drum and Bass, Dubstep and how genres have rises and falls. Plastician tells the story of “Intensive Snare” and other cult classics, and the guys go on to discuss how certain songs and genres become linked with drugs. Plastician tells the story of the most intense sound system moment he had, with DMZ’s classic Mud in a pub. Wise, Dans & Plastician go on to discuss how the government is trying to kill raving, as well as health care and immigration. The conversation goes back to music where the guys discuss what pisses DJs off and how to stay relevant in a world where music disseminates instantaneously online. Plastician tells the guys about his favourite types of shows to play, and how he was one of the first DJs to use Serato. The guys talk about personal experiences of raving and getting fucked up, with Plastician even throwing up on Example’s Mrs’ Feet as Skream gave him tequila. Leave your CD's on shore. Traffic Jamz can install a digital media receiver for the most intuitive solution for using an iPod on your boat. Extend the control of your marine stereo with a Wireless Remote Commander kit, allowing you to mount the remote wherever you like. Don't worry about the elements, as this remote meets tough standards for splash protection, UV exposure, and salt/fog. You'll also need a good pair of speakers on a boat to cut through the noise of the wind, waves, and motor.
After some discussion of one little New York Times article that quoted William(!), we move along to talking about designing your sound system and romanization, though it’s mostly about romanization. After that, we break a pattern and for the first time feature a natlang rather than a conlang — going from a grammar that just... Read more »

Mr Phipson is back in 2007 and keeps it up with the incredible podcast series. This time I digged in all digital crates and created a massive »MixTape«, well mixtape is not really a correct expression cause it ain't a tape but an podcast episode. Enjoy 60 minutes of urban, ghetto sounds from the favelas and shantytowns of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Angola. I selected two genres of urban pressure sounds from portuguese speakin' countries. Brazilian Baile Funk Carioca meets up with Kuduro from Angola and Lisbon, Portugal. For me both styles are very similiar with attitude and technique, though the sound is way different. Funk Carioca with its typical »tamborzao« (heavy drum sounds) and broken beats fits perfectly in a mix with 4-to-the-floor Kuduro beats. Both styles are produced very often by DJs in bedroom studios (like my podcast radio show ;-) Kuduro is a kind of mixture between House, Hip Hop and Ragga elemtens, the beats are in a similiar pattern like Reggaeton beats of Panama/Puerto Rico but are much faster and mostly 'round 140 BPM, while Funk Carioca or Baile Funk is around the 130s BPM a little side information for the techy geeks among open minded music friends. Special thanks to Favela Funk MCs for the Baile Funk sounds from Berlin. Visit their profile on MySpace! Shout outs to Mimi for the little artwork, she is a talented street art artist from Rio de Janeiro and creates that little dude with the paperbag on the head! Visit her Flickr account and see some of her arts! I am playing on Feb. 10, 2007 in a place called Souk in Lisboa, Portugal together with Mister Tambourine. Urban Sportive SuperSoundClash all the funky sounds you know from my podcast show plus Mister Tambourines fresh styles that enriches the whole night. This event is for all the urban souls out there. The Answer Riddim is a reggae instrumental produced by Clement “Coxsone” Dodd. Slim Smith & The Uniques recorded the tune “I’ll Never Let You Go" at Studio One studios in 1967. Selectors, deejays and backing bands have enjoyed playing the instrumental ever since. Also known as the Never Let Go, this riddim has been remade many times during the past decades. A staple in dancehall music, songs on the Answer riddim still get spun nightly by many DJs and Sound Systems.
