Comedian Simon Amstell said, “If you are somebody who is going to at some point be revealed as not like everyone else, then to be in an insular community is a problem.” Here Amstell was discussing how it felt growing up gay and going to a religious school. Insular religious communities shut themselves off from the world in order to keep their views unchanged by the outside. It's extremely effective. The Amish are one such community. Most of their followers aren't allowed to use electricity or have indoor plumbing. They view modern conveniences as threatening to their religious beliefs, which are at the center of their lives. Today's case is about an Amish man who never quite fit in with his brethren. His sexuality, his disposition, and his work ethic all flew in the face of what his community believed. Nancy Salzman, former president of Executive Success Programs (ESP)—a company offering personal and professional development programs designed to help people discover, develop, and utilize more of their untapped potential—joins Kate for the first of a two-part conversation. In 1998, she and Keith Raniere co-founded ESP, which Raniere later expanded into the broader umbrella organization NXIVM. In the summer of 1969, the San Francisco Chronicle received a letter that would ignite one of the most infamous investigations in American history. Inside was a chilling confession, a cryptic cipher, and the signature that would terrify the nation: a circle with a cross through it. In this episode of Serial Streamers Jami and Jessi discuss the Netflix documentary, “The Perfect Neighbor.” This disturbing documentary highlights the case of Ajika Owens, who was gunned down by her neighbor Susan Lorincz, through the lens of real life video footage from police body cams and interrogation room video cameras. Lorincz was a known “Karen” in the neighborhood, often calling police to report children playing near her home and causing what she perceived as a disturbance. It all came to a boiling point when Lorincz retrieved her gun and shot Ajike through the front door of her (Lorincz's home).
