Today on the Matt Walsh Show, the ruling class got together at the Met Gala last night to celebrate their wealth. AOC was on the scene in a “Tax the Rich” dress. Was it a courageous and rebellious display by the congresswoman, or rank, shameless hypocrisy? We'll discuss. Also, a new poll shows that an increasing number of vaccinated Americans are cutting off ties with unvaccinated friends. Plus, Secretary of State Blinken admits that many of those SIV applicant Afghans we're admitting into the country are not actually SIV applicants. And, a male MMA fighter enters the ring with a female fighter and beats her into submission. This is being celebrated as a brave and beautiful moment in sports history, but I have a different take. On today's show: special guest, Afghan interpreter for the U.S. and NATO, "Mr. Sharifi." Before moving to Commerce City, where he has lived for the past seven years, Sharifi was a journalist in Afghanistan where he also worked as an interpreter with the United States Military. Following the American troops' withdrawal from Afghanistan and the rapid rise to power by the Taliban in recent weeks, Sharifi is concerned for Afghans who helped the U.S. military that are now living under Taliban rule. He is still in contact with many of them. “Most of the interpreters, they're saying that they cannot even openly go out for shopping and stuff,” he explained. “Because if they go out, they would be traced and they would be followed, and they would be killed.” Tens of thousands of Afghans are estimated to be eligible for a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV), which is reserved for people who worked with or helped the U.S. overseas. But as Sharifi notes, the process is often complicated and lengthy. Sharifi himself had to wait two years for his visa to be approved. “SIV is a long process,” he said. “And by the time that they are going to be approved for that visa...the people will be already killed.” Steffan takes calls.    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Eine Woche, nachdem die Taliban die Kontrolle über Afghanistan übernommen haben, herrscht rund um den Flughafen von Kabul noch immer Chaos, die G7-Staaten beraten die Lage und die Afghanen verlieren die Hoffnung. Biden announced in April that he was going to fully withdraw US troops by Sept 11th.   As of this week, there were US helicopters flying back and forth from the Embassy to the Hamid Karzi Airport, the only airport still open.  Did we abandon Afghanistan to the terrorists? 2) Pakistan's role in supporting the Taliban:   Did Pakistan's 26 yr effort in support of the radical Islamist group Taliban lead to the current collapse?  How did they continue helping the Taliban while also claiming to help the US fight terrorism in the region? 3) US support for those who helped us:  There is a Special Immigrant Visa program set up to help those who worked closely w/ US Government and International Security Forces.  The SIV program had 18,000 pending applicants about 3 months ago when we talked about this.  What will happen to all these applicants now that the US Embassy is shut down? 4) US Reputation around the World:  If the US cannot support it's ally, the Republic of Afghanistan, can other countries who rely on US promises be assured we will come to their assistance?   Taiwan is being threatened by China.  Ukraine is being attacked by Russia.  Will they be abandoned too? We are Pastors Alex and Naomi Pappas Say hello to the leadership team at Oceans Unite.Mattress Market - Brand Names at Discoun Each new mattress sale includes delivery, setup & takeaway of your old mattress.

Siv is not the person you'd expect to be behind a major national menstrual product drive (or be a nationals winning pole-dancer and drag queen). He's ferociously fighting the injustice that girls and women experience daily across South Africa. And he doesn't feel he's the one who needs the credit. There's the word men in menstruation, and as Siv rightly points out, without menstruation, humanity wouldn't exist. The United States is quickly approaching its September deadline for a full military withdrawal from Afghanistan. As the U.S. completes its withdrawal, many Afghans who partnered with the U.S., serving as translators and interpreters, face the danger of severe retribution from the Taliban. Those who partner with the U.S. military can obtain a special immigrant visa, or SIV, through the U.S. State Department, but many lawmakers and veterans' groups are concerned that the U.S. is running out of time to approve SIVs for its Afghan partners. To help make sense of it all, Bryce Klehm sat down with Congressman Seth Moulton and Matt Zeller. Rep. Moulton is a representative from Massachusetts who served as a Marine infantry officer in Iraq and who is also a member of the Honoring Our Promises Working Group, a bipartisan group of lawmakers calling on the Biden administration to protect the U.S.'s Afghan partners. Zeller is a Truman Center fellow and host of the Wartime Allies podcast, who served as a combat advisor with Afghan security forces and who is also the co-founder of No One Left Behind, a veterans' organization that provides services to former Afghan and Iraqi interpreters who resettle in the United States. They covered a range of issues, including the risks that current and former U.S. partners in Afghanistan face, the obstacles in the SIV process and a potential evacuation of U.S. partners to Guam. All about our Guest and past guests at http://www.ParamotorGuest.com Valerie Wrede got the flying bug when her boyfriend Stephen showed her YouTube videos of Paramotoring last spring. She thought she’d learn to fly at some point in her life, but wasn’t sure when or how and hadn’t even heard of paramotoring before!! She grew up moving (California, Germany, Texas, Arizona, England, and New Mexico before age 18 because her dad was in the military). She realized the Air Force was a great way to pay for school, so she joined and was stationed in Illinois, Japan, and Germany before moving to the Pacific Northwest, where she’s lived the last ten years. She works full-time in the medical field, and loves to scuba dive and do underwater video.  After training with Team Fly Halo during the summer of 2020, she wanted to improve her ‘bump tolerance’ so attended an SIV course. She learned so much and even got out of a riser twist! Still a newbie, she has 53 flights since training and flies as often as work schedule and the winds allow.  You can find her at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRAq4N8FbXo61ZEeTydz2RA/videos https://www.instagram.com/valeriewrede/ https://www.facebook.com/valerie.wrede.7   Paramotor Podcasts Hosts: Brook: http://www.PPGPirate.com Tommy: http://www.PPGTommy.com  BRIAN: http://www.PPGBrian.com SHANE: http://www.PPGShane.com LINDA: http://www.ParaMomUSA.com JP: http://www.JPTulo.com SEAN: http://www.PPGGrandpa.com ******************************************************************* Please send us stuff to give a way on this show and be our sponsor! Afghan interpreters languish in visa limbo as US coalitions return home

Global Security

When the US goes to war, it rarely fights alone. In Afghanistan, the US military has for years leaned heavily on hiring people locally, often as interpreters. Yet, as coalition forces return home, the vast majority of Afghans who stay behind can face deadly threats.  Related: Thousands of foreign interpreters trapped awaiting special visasMohammad, an interpreter and adviser alongside US troops and officials in Afghanistan, knew this reality well. But he was upbeat last fall when a US visa seemed to be on the way.“I am hopeful that I'll get the approval,” he said then, adding, “You never know. You never know what happens.”Mohammad wanted a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) — available only for Afghans who have assisted US missions. It also applies to their families, including unmarried children younger than age 21. Unfortunately, the wait took too long. In late January, Mohammad was shot point-blank near the border with Pakistan, reportedly by the Taliban.“I was pretty shocked, even though [Mohammad] had been saying that his life had been under threat by the Taliban for many years."Stephen Verrecchia, with the US State Department, worked closely with Mohammad in Afghanistan“I was pretty shocked, even though he had been saying that his life had been under threat by the Taliban for many years,” said Stephen Verrecchia, with the US State Department. He lives in Washington, DC, now, but worked closely with Mohammad in Afghanistan. For over a decade, Mohammad’s work as an interpreter and adviser had taken him everywhere.“I've been with the Army, the Special Forces, the embassy,” said Mohammad, who had asked to use his middle name only for safety reasons. The Taliban often sees those who work for foreign entities or armed forces as traitors. To visit his family’s home in eastern Afghanistan, Mohammad said that he had to go undercover and avoid Taliban checkpoints. “You can’t travel alone in a ranger, even a convoy, an armored truck. ...They come under attack.”Mohammad, speaking to The World in 2020 from a police base where he worked to help train officers“You can’t travel alone in a ranger, even a convoy, an armored truck,” he told The World in a 2020 interview from the police base where he worked to help train officers, under a Department of Defense contract. “They come under attack.” Special Immigration Visas can be lifelines, but the process is often opaque, with unexplained denials, and it can go on for years. Applications can pingpong around several US government agencies, even though applications often detail immediate threats against interpreters’ lives. During both the Barack Obama and Donald Trump presidencies, interpreters have sued to speed things up, including a class-action lawsuit brought by the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), a nonprofit based in New York. In 2013, Congress mandated that SIV applicants should receive a decision within nine months of submitting an application. Most visa applicants wait far longer than that.Related: Court decision could speed up visas for US military interpreters“We take these threats very seriously, and we are committed to providing efficient and secure SIV processing while maintaining national security as our highest priority."US State Department statement on SIV for AfghansThe Biden administration has pledged to help more. The US State Department did not grant an interview to The World, but emailed a statement: “We take these threats very seriously, and we are committed to providing efficient and secure SIV processing while maintaining national security as our highest priority." The statement also said that more than 70,000 Afghans have benefited from SIV programs. Related: Translators who worked for the US military in Iraq wonder if their American dream is slipping awayZia Ghafoori, a former Afghan interpreter, arrived in the United States in 2014 after a six-year wait for his visa. He now lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, and runs the Interpreting Freedom Foundation, a nonprofit that advocates for Afghan interpreters and assists with resettling those who do receive visas. In Afghanistan, Ghafoori was nicknamed “Booyah” by those in the Army unit and received a Purple Heart after surviving intense firefight with wounds.“I'm trying to help those that are still in Afghanistan. ... They should not face the wait that I did. Many of these guys took a bullet for both countries — the United States and Afghanistan.”Zia Ghafoori, Interpreting Freedom Foundation“I'm trying to help those that are still in Afghanistan,” he said. “They should not face the wait that I did. Many of these guys took a bullet for both countries — the United States and Afghanistan.” Today, about 17,000 Afghans are waiting for visas, according to IRAP.  Related: Visas are running out for the US military's Afghan interpretersMohammad had cleared big hurdles and hoped to get to the US soon with his family.“Everyone!” he said, including his wife, and four daughters and two sons. The oldest is 19. Verrecchia, with the State Department, had last spoken with Mohammad over Christmas. In January, Verrecchia emailed friends, expressing hope to greet his former interpreter, along with his family, on US soil soon. “Perhaps 2021 will finally be the year, I'm keeping my fingers crossed,” he wrote.“In a very almost professorial way, he made me understand Afghanistan culture,” Verrecchia said. “I think Afghanistan is far more than what, you know, you see in the paper, in terms of the tremendous loss of life and the casualties.” Verrecchia believes that the State Department has a “moral obligation” to help former interpreters. Julie Kornfield agrees. She is a senior staff attorney with IRAP and worked with Mohammad on his case.“I feel sick to my stomach,” she said. “It’s just infuriating to know that he was very close to reaching a safer place in the world.” Kornfield and others are now leading efforts to help Mohammad’s family receive US visas. At least 300 Afghan interpreters have been killed since 2014. Their deaths do not make big headlines. Yet, news circulates among US military and officials who’ve worked closely with them. Former Army Special Forces Major David Smyth, who toured multiple times in Iraq and Afghanistan, remembered leading his team along a narrow road in rural Afghanistan that opened to a big field. His interpreter pulled him aside and told him to stop. They appeared to be entering an old Soviet minefield, where hockey puck-sized devices could still explode.“He was picking up on cues that we would have never picked up on,” said Smyth, who now lives in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Smyth said that not enough people in the US realize the critical role interpreters play on the battlefield. That’s why these visas don’t get prioritized. “So few people serve in the military, and of that — even fewer see combat. ... I don't think that you can really change the mind of the government, if the people in the United States don't really see the urgency the way that I see it."David Smyth, former Army Special Forces Major with multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan“So few people serve in the military, and of that — even fewer see combat,” Smyth said. That reality, he said, contributes to a lack of national understanding about the Afghans’ contributions or a need to accelerate visa processing.“I don't think that you can really change the mind of the government, if the people in the United States don't really see the urgency the way that I see it,” he said. The urgency is clearer than ever for one Afghan who works with the US military. He asked not to use his name for security reasons. He knew Mohammad well and is quite familiar with the threat from the Taliban: “They just know killing,” he said. “They just know AK-47s. They do not know humanity.” Now, he said, his family is in danger.“I am also receiving every day, me and my father and brothers are receiving calls from the Taliban that we will be killed,” he said. He has not left his house in weeks, he said. He knows the threats are intensifying against people like him — especially as the US considers withdrawing troops — and the Taliban regains power. He has also applied for a US visa — the same kind Mohammad wanted — in March 2018. He is still waiting for an answer.

With all the talk and skepticism about vaccines, it is a great time to take a sit back and evaluate the science of vaccines. Today, we have the pleasure of learning from Natasha Duggan. Natasha is a virologist whose work is centered around understanding antibodies for potential HIV treatment. In this episode, we discuss: -Why vaccines work after virus mutation -The clinical trial process and how the COVID-19 vaccine was rolled out -The types of vaccines, their structures, and how they are studied More about Natasha Natasha was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and immigrated to The United States at the age of 3 with her mother. She completed her grade school education in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In her last two years of high school, she participated in Project SEED where she gained her first exposure to laboratory-based sciences volunteering in a Biochemistry lab at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After high school, she moved to San Francisco, California, and received a B.A. in Psychology from the University of San Francisco. In college, she spent her summers working in an epigenetics laboratory at Duke University examining environmental exposures and DNA methylation. Following college, Natasha spent the next three years working in a laboratory at the University of Virginia studying angiogenesis in diabetic individuals. Deciding to continue her education she moved to New Orleans and attended Tulane University School of Public Health where she received a Master of Science in Public Health with a focus in Tropical Medicine. At Tulane, her work focused on examining and identifying salivary proteins found in mosquitos infected with the dengue virus. From here she went on to the University of Miami where she is currently completing her Ph.D. in Cell Developmental Biology. Her work focuses on isolating neutralizing antibodies against HIV and SIV as potential tools for HIV vaccine development.

This week's episode is a call to action, as we tell the story of Muhammad Kamran. I hope that you will listen and join us to help save him and his family. Muhammad was an interpreter in Afghanistan for U.S. troops and the War on Terror for over ten years, but, now, he's been in hiding for six years in Pakistan after he and his family fled Afghanistan for their lives. They are still trying to find safe passage to America. Yet, the U.S. has denied his case repeatedly, with no reasons given publicly.  After the U.S. troops began pulling out of Afghanistan, interpreters became targets for the Taliban. More than 17,000 Afghan interpreters were left behind to face torture and death and, in 2009, the U.S. government passed an act to supposedly help with this issue.  "In 2009, Congress passed the Afghan Allies Protection Act of 2009. The Act provided special immigrant visas (SIVs) to Afghans who had worked for at least one year as translators or interpreters, or who were employed by, or on behalf of, the U.S. government in Afghanistan, and whose lives were threatened because of their work in support of the U.S. mission. The visas allow these wartime allies to resettle in the United States." (https://www.humanrightsfirst.org/resource/afghan-special-immigrant-visa-program) Yet, under the Trump administration, the number of SIVs issued has significantly been reduced. Right now, they deny 90% of Iraqi and Afghani U.S. military interpreters who apply as refugees. This tragedy is an everyday reality for so many interpreters living in fear.  Thankfully, Muhammad has had an advocate in Kristy Perano and her family, who have tirelessly have spent the last several years campaigning and petitioning on his behalf to the government. Currently, Muhammad is still waiting but also pursuing immigration through Canada.  Let's help get the Kamran family to safety. For that to happen, WE NEED YOU! _____________________________________________ Here is how you can get involved and help: 1) Listen to Muhammad's story and share it on social media. We need to continue to get this message out.  2) Give to Muhammad's GoFundMe Campaign to help his family immigrate to Canada. He needs to raise $30,000.  https://www.gofundme.com/f/rescue-afghan-interpreter-and-family-from-taliban 3) Join his prayer team for updates and prayer requests. To be added to the list, please email save.aysha@gmail.com. 4) Helping SIV refugees through Keeping our Promise https://www.keepingourpromise.org/ Help new refugees in your community through organizations like World Relief and We Welcome Refugees. https://worldrelief.org/ https://www.wewelcomerefugees.com/
