Il aura fallu neuf ans pour que l'Etat français réagisse. Au nom de la « simplification », le SIV a été privatisé. Et des utilisateurs malhonnêtes en ont profité pour largement le détourner : moyennant leur accès dématérialisé à cette base de données étatique, ils ont maquillé un grand nombre de fraudes.Pour l'Etat, la facture est salée : sur la période allant de 2022 à 2024 uniquement, la Cour des comptes a chiffré à plus d'un demi-milliard d'euros l'étendue des pertes de recettes fiscales. Dans un rapport publié en mars 2026, les magistrats relèvent que de nombreux véhicules, rendus intraçables par ces fraudes au SIV, ont même été utilisés ces dernières années pour des « braquages », des « cavales » et des « homicides ».Pourtant, des alertes sont remontées de divers services de l'Etat et de la rédaction du Monde : en décembre 2024, une enquête du journal révèle ce scandale aux immatriculations et lève ainsi le voile sur ces milliers de garages fictifs auxquels se heurtent les forces de l'ordre.Comment nos journalistes ont-ils travaillé sur ce sujet ? Martin Rejmanek and his father Honza, a veteran 5-time Red Bull X-Alps competitor completed the full length of the 2003 Red Bull X-Alps course from the Dachstein to Monaco by tandem bivvy using only their wing and their feet this last year. Father and son completed the amazing journey in different segments over the course of eight summers, starting when Martin was just 8 years old. Martin is now seventeen and graduated to flying solo last year, taking on the full breadth of cross country flying, SIV training and becoming a completely independent pilot. He's flown solo from Annecy to Chamonix over the Aravis chain. He's flown at over 17,000 feet over Mt Whitney in the Sierras. Inspiring to say the least.

From May 16, 2022: Today, Lawfare and Goat Rodeo released the first two episodes of Allies, a podcast series that traces the U.S.'s efforts to protect Afghan interpreters, translators and other partners through the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program. That effort culminated in the U.S. evacuation from Afghanistan in August 2021, when thousands of the U.S.'s local partners were left behind. They became essential partners, and it was nearly impossible for any U.S. platoon, provincial reconstruction team or diplomat to operate without interpreters and translators.
