As told by historian Susan Easton Black, converts to the Church of Jesus Christ in the 1800s when Joseph Smith was prophet, had heard about the record found near the Smith family farm. Whether they saw the plates themselves or held the printed Book of Mormon in their hands and gained an immediate testimony of it, none of them would ever deny the veracity of the record, whether they stayed or fell away from the Church. Converts mentioned in this episode are: William Huntington (1784-1846) Jared Carter (1801 – 1849) Noah Packard (1796-1860) Parley P. Pratt (1807 – 1857) Oliver Cowdery (1806 – 1850) David Whitmer (1805 – 1888) Martin Harris (1783 – 1875) Peter Whitmer, Jr. (1809 – 1836) Christian Whitmer (1798 – 1835) Jacob Whitmer (1800 – 1856) John Whitmer (1802 – 1878) Hiram Page (1800 - 1852) Joseph Smith, Sr. (1771 – 1840) Hyrum Smith (1800 – 1844) Samuel H. Smith (1808 - 1844) Lucy Mack Smith (1775 – 1856) Joseph Smith, Jr. (1805-1844) For more testimonies of early converts to the Church, refer to Susan's book Stories from the Early Saints: Converted by the Book of Mormon (1992) Susan first read the Book of Mormon when she was eleven years old. 1 Nephi 1:1
This week we discuss the additional revelations that are given to individuals Oliver Cowdery, Hyrum Smith, Samuel H. Smith, Joseph Smith Sr., and Joseph Knight Sr. All of these individuals wanted to know their specific duties now that the church had been officially organized. We discuss the Lord's warning to Oliver not to be prideful, Hyrums humility as he followed his younger brother, Samuel's call to stay back for a time before he was called to serve as a missionary, Joseph Sr's call to strengthen the church, and Joseph Knight's call to be baptized and join the church. Additionally, why were the first 4 men told that they were not under any condemnation but that was not told to Joseph Knight Sr.Joseph Smith Jr. is told to be patient in his afflictions and that he should endure them well. Oliver is called to continue serving as a scribe for Joseph. Emma Smith also desired a revelation to know her part in this newly organized church. She had been by Joseph's side the entire time and was going to continue to be. She was the first and only lady to have a canonized revelation directed to her. She is called to be a comfort and support for her husband, Joseph Smith and to lift him up during his trials and tribulations. She is called to put together a hymnal for the church for members to use to sing praises to God. Singing is a major contributor to bringing the spirit. She is called to expound the scriptures. Join us as we discuss all of these individuals, the revelations they were given, their faithfulness, their weaknesses and how each of us can learn from all of them.

In the anticipated Part 2 of "The Witnesses," Jake immerses into the world after Martin Harris, Oliver Cowdrey and David Whitmer witness the plates and the vision with Moroni. Part 2 focuses more on the undying and firm testimonies of the three witnesses throughout their lives. We also experience the story of the eight witnesses: Christian Whitmer, Jacob Whitmer, Peter Whitmer Jr., John Whitmer, Hiram Page, Joseph Smith Sen., Hyrum Smith and Samuel H. Smith. Many of these witnesses of the Book of Mormon had rocky histories with the church, and many left. None of which however, denied their testimony of the Book of Mormon. This episode is a lot more gritty, due to the experiences with the mob and the violence the witnesses and others received
