Have you ever attended a temple dedication? For the early Saints, dedicating the Kirtland Temple was a once-in-a-lifetime event. Today, temple dedications and open houses happen with increasing frequency—and each one carries the same purpose: preparing a house where the Lord Himself may come. This week's block—Doctrine and Covenants 109–110—takes us inside the dedicatory prayer of the Kirtland Temple and the sacred vision Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery had just one week later, when Christ appeared in His house. In this episode, you'll learn:
Our Mothers Knew It with Maria EckersleyA Creative Study of Come, Follow MeD&C [D&C 109-110]“It Is Thy House, a Place of Thy Holiness”September 29 – October 5, 2025WEEK 40 SUMMARY=================Doctrine and Covenants sections 109 and 110 are pivotal in Latter-day Saint history, focusing on the dedication of the Kirtland Temple and the divine manifestations that followed. Section 109 is the dedicatory prayer offered by Joseph Smith, expressing gratitude for blessings received and seeking the Lord's presence in the temple. It requests protection, the outpouring of the Spirit, forgiveness, unity among the Saints, and success in missionary efforts. Section 110 describes the divine visitations that occurred shortly after the dedication, where Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, accepting the temple and expressing His approval. Additionally, Moses, Elias, and Elijah appeared, each conferring essential priesthood keys: Moses restored the keys of the gathering of Israel, Elias conferred the dispensation of the gospel of Abraham, and Elijah restored the sealing power, crucial for temple work and eternal families. These sections underscore the significance of temples and the restoration of priesthood authority in the work of salvation.SPARK 1: TOUCH THESE TIMBERS================OBJECT LESSON: “A House to Thy Name”: Cross-Section Mini Kirtland TempleSPARK 2: THE CENTER PLACE===================================OBJECT LESSON: “Armed with Thy Power”: Endowed Temple RacersSPARK 3: HEARTS OF THE FATHERS=============================OBJECT LESSON: “The Time Has Fully Come”: Sealing Power EnvelopesCHAPTERS=========00:00:14 INTRO00:04:51 QUICK GLANCE00:09:16 INSIGHTS 100:20:30 CREATIVE 100:20:30 QUESTIONS 100:27:42 INSIGHTS 200:38:15 CREATIVE 200:43:53 QUESTIONS 200:47:40 INSIGHTS 300:57:50 CREATIVE 301:03:07 QUESTIONS 301:05:54 WRAP UPLINKS=====WEB: https://www.gather.meckmom.comETSY: https://www.etsy.com/shop/meckmomINSTAGRAM: Instagram @meckmomlifePODCAST: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST DISCLAIMER=================================This podcast represents my own thoughts and opinions. Revelation Dates: March 27, 1836 – April 3, 1836 Revelation Places: Kirtland, Ohio Section 109 - Historical Background: In December 1832, the Lord commanded the saints of Kirtland to build a temple. At that time, there were only about 100 members living in Kirtland, who lacked money, lands or knowledge to accomplish the task. Yet, at the completion and dedication of the temple in March, 1836, there were over 1,500 members, eager to receive their promised “power from on high.” Joseph had never seen a temple but through revelation he was shown the “pattern” from which to build. Through great sacrifice, from the laying of the initial cornerstone in July, 1833 to the dedicatory prayer on March 27, 1836, the temple was now complete. From January through March of 1836, the church experienced what some call a season of Pentecost. There were many open visions of angels, heavenly messengers, spiritual manifestations and even the appearance of the Savior himself. Under direct revelation, Joseph received this dedicatory prayer and read it to the one-thousand members crowded into the pews of the temple. Recap: The Lord is asked to accept the house, which they were commanded to build, as a house of the Lord. A request is made to the Lord for His appearance to the saints in their solemn assembly. This house is to be a house of prayer, fasting, faith and glory. He asks the Lord to deliver the saints from their enemies, that they may go in power to gather the righteous before the calamity of the wicked. Turn away thy wrath from the repentant. May the Jews, Lamanites and all Israel be redeemed. Joseph prays for the leaders of the church and the saints be crowned with power and reap eternal joy. Section 110 - Historical Background: On Easter Sunday, April 3, 1836, one week following the temple dedication, 800 saints gathered in the temple to worship. Although the ordinance of endowment had not yet been revealed (that would be in 1842 in Nauvoo), the ordinances of washing and anointing and the washing of feet had been revealed. As the members worshipped and listened to sermons by church leaders, they participated in the sacrament as administered by the twelve apostles. Then curtains were drawn, or dropped, separating the Prophet and Oliver Cowdery (ordained as Assistant President) from the congregation. Here, they both knelt in prayer and the heavens were opened. Joseph and Oliver received the following glorious revelation. Recap: The Lord appears at the temple pulpit before Joseph and Oliver, accepting the Kirtland temple as His house. Moses then appears to them and commits the keys of the gathering of Israel; Then Elias (a messenger) appears and commits the keys of the covenant of Abraham; And lastly, Elijah appears and commits the sealing keys, which without these keys, the whole earth would be smitten with a curse. Now, the great and dreadful day of the Lord is near, even at the doors.
Revelation Dates: November 1834 – December 1835 Revelation Places: Kirtland, Ohio Section 106 - Historical Background: It had been 5 months since the return from Zions Camp. Joseph was engaged in the building of the Temple in Kirtland, along with visiting and strengthening each branch in the area. The previous month of March, Joseph had visited the town of Freedom, baptizing 30-40 people there, including Warren Cowdery, the brother of Oliver Cowdery. This revelation is directed to Warren Cowdery. Recap: Warren Cowdery to be ordained a High Priest and preside over the saints at Freedom, Ohio. He is to be humble and an example, preaching to the people. Section 107 - Historical Background: On Feb 14, 1835, Joseph invited all those who risked their lives at Zions Camp, to attend a special meeting. From the congregation, the 12 Apostles were chosen. Shortly thereafter, the First Council of 70 was selected, presided over by a presidency of 7. On March 28, 1835, the Twelve were about to leave on various missions and desired an uplifting revelation to take with them. Recap: There are two priesthoods, the Melchizedek and Aaronic. All offices in the church are appendages to this priesthood. Priesthood offices are listed along with their rights and duties. Melchizedek: To administer the keys in spiritual things, authority to preside over all; Offices include High Priest – organized into the First Presidency, quorum of 12 Apostles, quorums of the Seventy, Patriarch and Bishop; and all other holders of the Melchizedek priesthood are to be ordained to the office of Elder. Aaronic: To administer keys of the administering of angels and the outward ordinances, to be presided over by the High Priest of the bishopric; Offices include Priest, Teacher and Deacon. [Note: When it comes time to translate records, such as the sealed portion of the gold plates, the book of Enoch, the brass plates, etc. the prophet will be sustained not only as prophet, seer and revelator, but also translator.] The number of quorums of the Seventy will expand as needed to travel as ministers among the gentiles. Section 108 - Historical Background: Lyman Sherman was among those faithful brethren who answered the call to Zion's Camp. However, upon their return to Kirtland, he wavered. Prompted by the Lord, Lyman approached Joseph to request a blessing and revelation from the Lord. Recap: Because of following the prompting of the Lord, Lyman is forgiven. The Lord admonishes to stop resisting the promptings of the Spirit and to be more careful in observing your vows. Be patient and faithful so the Father can bless you. Stringthen your brethren through conversation, prayers and in your doings.

This is a rebroadcast. The 1838 Mormon Missouri War remains a pivotal and often tragic chapter in Latter-day Saint history. We're revisiting an interview with Steven LeSueur, an esteemed historian and author of what is considered by many to be the definitive book on the conflict, "The 1838 Mormon War in Missouri.” LeSueur, who sadly passed away in July 2025, was remembered for his significant contributions to understanding this complex period. https://youtu.be/YGlNLnA9RIA Historian Behind the Book LeSueur, who lived in Arlington, Virginia, was not a full-time historian. He described his career primarily as a journalist, covering national defense issues, editing a technology magazine, and working as a freelance writer for businesses before his retirement. Despite this, his historical expertise was profound. His seminal book, published in 1987 by the University of Missouri Press, originated from his master's thesis in American history at George Mason University. His interest in Missouri history stemmed from early research work he did for Lamar Barrett at BYU in 1976-1977, immediately after graduating with his undergraduate history degree from BYU. This early work involved delving into diaries and letters to find references to "Adam's altar" (Adam-ondi-Ahman) and exploring various historical sites in Missouri. For his book, LeSueur conducted extensive research at the Library of Congress, Utah archives, and multiple trips to Missouri, even staying with prominent Community of Christ historian Bill Russell, who, along with Valeen Tippets Avery, reviewed his manuscript. LeSueur also lent his expertise to a documentary called "Trouble in Zion," where he was one of several "talking heads" discussing the Mormon experience in Missouri, sharing his interpretations of the events. Seeds of Conflict: Beyond Simple Blame LeSueur's approach to the Mormon Missouri War focuses on understanding how events unfolded, emphasizing a snowball effect of reactions rather than a grand conspiracy. While recognizing the immense suffering of the Mormons, he seeks to explain why Missourians reacted as they did. Key events & LeSueur's interpretations include: Jackson County Expulsion (1832): The Mormons were unjustly driven from Jackson County, having done nothing wrong. While a newspaper article about "Free People of Color" was a point of contention, LeSueur suggests Missourians' misinterpretation was likely driven by their deep-seated fear of anything perceived as attacking slavery, rather than solely as an excuse to expel Mormons. The Caldwell County Compromise (1836): After Mormons were driven from Jackson and found refuge in Clay County, Joseph Smith's plans for another military expedition prompted fearful Clay County citizens to propose creating a county exclusively for Mormons – Caldwell County. This was shepherded by Alexander Doniphan. The "Broken Agreement": Missourians largely believed that, in exchange for Caldwell County, Mormons had implicitly agreed to settle only there. LeSueur found no such agreement in Mormon sources, but Missourians, including Doniphan, clearly perceived it. For about a year and a half (late 1836 into 1838), relations were relatively peaceful, resting on this perceived agreement. Joseph Smith's Arrival and Mormon Expansion (March 1838): When Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon moved from Kirtland to Missouri, Far West (in Caldwell County) became the new gathering place, and plans for expansion beyond Caldwell into Davies (Adam-ondi-Ahman) and Carroll (Dewitt) counties began. This expansion, especially large-scale settlements, was seen by Missourians as breaking the agreement and triggered renewed protests. The Danites: This paramilitary organization was formed in June 1838, primarily by Samson Avard and others. Initially, their purpose was internal regulation, enforcing orthodoxy and the law of consecration among Mormons. They notably drove dissenters like Oliver Cowdery and the Whitmers from Fa...

The origins of polygamy are murky. Was there an 1831 revelation on the topic? What was the nature of the Fanny Alger relationship? We'll also discuss Zion's Camp, and Joseph Smith's dog, Old Major, who caused some issues with the troops. How did Liberty Jail affect Joseph Smith & the Church? John Turner tackles these questions. Check out our conversation... https://youtu.be/v9171F-vXok Don't miss our other conversations with John: https://gospeltangents.com/people/john-turner/ Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Except for book reviews, no content may be reproduced without written permission Peering into Joseph Smith's Story We recently had the privilege of delving into the life of Joseph Smith with John Turner, author of the compelling biography, Joseph Smith: The Rise and Fall of an American Prophet. The conversation unpacked some of the most intriguing and lesser-known episodes from Smith's early life, providing valuable context and challenging common narratives. Nuances of the Fanny Alger Controversy One of the topics we explored was the Fanny Alger controversy. While historical sources on this episode are often late or secondhand, making it difficult to write about with confidence, John Turner found persuasive arguments that date Fanny Alger's relationship with Joseph Smith to shortly before she left Kirtland in August or September of 1836. Interestingly, there's been discussion about whether this was an "adoptive sealing." However, John said it's considered unlikely to have been an adoptive sealing because Joseph Smith had not yet fully articulated or developed his understanding of sealing at that time. Oliver Cowdery, a key figure in the early church, certainly didn't view it as such, remaining "very angry about it in early 1838.” Instead, it is most likely to have been "some sort of intimate relationship" that was disturbing to both Oliver Cowdery and Emma Smith. He said It is also considered unlikely to have been a plural marriage. It's worth noting that while sexual impropriety allegations were common against new religious movements, the Fanny Alger controversy, though a "live issue within the church for several years," did not particularly resonate with the church's external critics at the time in the context of plural marriage or polygamy. In fact, the Church's 1835 Declaration on Marriage emphasized monogamy as the standard. Zion's Camp and the Tale of "Old Major" Moving to 1834, we discussed Zion's Camp, Joseph Smith's march to Missouri. While often seen as a significant event for its larger purposes, it also had its lighter — and more human — moments. One such detail involves "Old Major," Joseph Smith's dog. During the challenging and conflict-ridden trip, Old Major didn't get along with another church member, Sylvester Smith (no relation to Joseph). The dog's barking at night and potential attempts to bite Sylvester led to Sylvester speaking "rude things about Joseph Smith's dog" and even wanting to shoot it. In a moment highlighting the "juvenile" but understandable "temper flared" nature of the trip, Joseph Smith reportedly threatened to shoot Sylvester Smith in response. This anecdote underscores that the participants of Zion's Camp were "not all of one heart in mind.” Sylvester Smith later published a confession for opposing Joseph rudely, even managing to say the note was made "under duress.” From a broader perspective, while the spiritual purpose of Zion's Camp — the redemption of Zion — ultimately failed, it was ironically a "very positive thing for many of those who were participants.” Despite Zion not being redeemed and the march stopping short of engaging enemies or reclaiming property, the majority of marchers found their faith strengthened. This was partly because, by accepting the call, they were "further entering into Joseph's story," experiencing "divine promises and chastening and failures" alongside him.

Revelation Dates: November 1 – 12, 1831 Revelation Places: Hiram and Kirtland Ohio Section 67 - Historical Background: It was time to compile the revelations received through Joseph Smith thus far and print them in a Book of Commandments. Joseph called a special church conference and after the meeting convened, the Lord revealed the Preface to the Book of Commandments which is now section 1 of the Doctrine & Covenants. The Elders present were asked to bear testimony of the divinity of the revelations. Meanwhile, William E. McLellin and a few others criticized some of the language used in the revelations and wanted it improved. The Lord provided this revelation as a result. Recap: Because of fear, the Elders did not receive the blessing God had offered them. The Lord testifies of the truthfulness and divinity of these revelations. The Lord challenges those scoffers in the church to take the least of these revelations and attempt to write one like unto it. If they cannot, they must sign their testimony to its divinity or else be condemned. They must strip themselves of jealousy and fear. Section 68 - Historical Background: Following the experience as discussed in section 67, Orson Hyde, Luke S. Johnson, Lyman E. Johnson and William E. McLellin each requested a personal revelation from the Lord. Rather than granting individual counsel, the Lord reveals His word toward all the faithful elders of His church. Recap: When speaking as moved upon by the Holy Ghost, it is as if the Lord were speaking it. Be of good cheer and do not fear, for the Lord will stand by you. Preach the gospel to all the world that the believers may be saved. The Lord then turns to Joseph and gives administrative counsel. All bishops must be worthy high priests, appointed by the First Presidency. Parents are to teach their children prayer and the principles and ordinances of the gospel and baptize them at the age of 8. Be not idle! Section 69 - Historical Background: After the Elders agreed to serve as witnesses to the divinity of the Book of Commandments, Joseph dedicated the Book of Commandments unto the Lord. Oliver Cowdery was assigned to take the manuscript to Independence, Missouri for printing. Recap: Oliver should not go to Independence alone but should have a companion, namely John Whitmer, the church historian, so that he can record this history. Section 70 - Historical Background: From November 1 to November 12, 1831, Joseph needed to hold 4 church conferences. At the close of the 4th conference, Joseph completed reviewing the Book of Commandments and Oliver Cowdery with John Whitmer were about to embark on their 800 mile journey to Independence, Missouri. Recap: The specific stewardship of publishing and distributing the Book of Commandments is appointed to Oliver Cowdery, John Whitmer, Martin Harris, Sidney Rigdon and W.W. Phelps. They are to use the monies from the publication of the Book of Commandments for their needs but are to donate excess monies to the church, as commanded under the law of consecration and in accordance with the Spirit.

We'll discuss changes in revelations for the Doctrine & Covenants and JST. Joseph Smith got a revelation to get a Canadian copyright for the Book of Mormon. It didn't succeed. Is this a failed revelation? David Hocking weighs in on that uncanonized revelation in his new book "The Revelations of Joseph Smith." Check out our conversation.. https://youtu.be/5WdAr21wooI Don't miss our other conversations with David Hocking: http://gospeltangents.com/people/david-hocking Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Except for book reviews, no content may be reproduced without written permission. 0:00 Book of Mormon Canadian Copyright 12:45 Changes in Revelations 16:47 JST Bible What You'll Find in "The Revelations of Joseph Smith" Hocking's primary focus in this book is on Joseph Smith's personal revelations and history, as published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints between 1902 and 1912, chosen specifically because it is in the public domain. He intentionally does not include revelations attributed to later church leaders like Brigham Young or Joseph F. Smith, nor does he include the official declarations (OD 1 & 2) or the section about the martyrdom, as these were not Joseph Smith's revelations. Key features and inclusions in the book: Uncanonized Revelations: The book features revelations that are not part of the standard Doctrine and Covenants. A notable example is the revelation concerning the Canadian copyright for the Book of Mormon, which, although controversial because the attempt to secure the copyright was unsuccessful, is included as it is part of Joseph Smith's history. Color-Coded Text for Voices: To enhance understanding, Hocking uses a unique color-coding system for different voices: ◦ Red text signifies direct speech from God (Heavenly Father, Holy Spirit, or Jesus Christ). For instance, the Canadian copyright revelation is shown in red, indicating it's the voice of Heavenly Father. ◦ Blue text is used for words spoken by angels.Blue text also indicates quoted scripture, such as sections where the Lord quotes Isaiah, helping readers identify the source of the text. Multiple First Vision Accounts: The book compiles various versions of Joseph Smith's First Vision accounts, including the 1832, 1835, and the 1842 Wentworth letter version, offering a comprehensive view of these foundational spiritual experiences. Patriarchal Blessings: Hocking includes patriarchal blessings given to Joseph Smith and Emma Smith. This includes Joseph Sr.'s blessing to his son, Joseph Jr., where Joseph of Egypt is quoted, highlighted in blue to denote quoted scripture and structured poetically for readability. Emma Smith's patriarchal blessing is also included, rendered in red text, indicating it as a revelation from the Lord's voice. Oliver Cowdery's Revelation to Joseph: A particularly moving inclusion is a blessing given by Oliver Cowdery to Joseph Smith, which Oliver received as a revelation. The Book of Mormon Printing Miracle: Hocking delves into the intricate process and efforts required to publish the Book of Mormon, detailing the "mechanism" and "lot of work that went into it.” Correlation between Joseph Smith and Enoch: The book explores the connections and correlations between Joseph Smith's experiences and the biblical figure of Enoch. The Joseph Smith Translation (JST) of the Bible Hocking has also published a book on the Joseph Smith Translation (JST), also known as the Inspired Version of the Bible. Joseph Smith viewed this work as a direct commandment from God, a "branch of his calling," to make "updates or corrections" to the Old and New Testaments. Key aspects of Hocking's JST book: Revelation-Driven Process: The JST process began with revelations like the Vision of Moses (a prologue to Genesis) and the Prophecy of Enoch, which significantly expand on what's found in traditional Old Testament.
Revelation Dates: August 1831 Revelation Places: Jackson County, Missouri; Banks of the Missouri River; Kirtland Ohio Section 60 - Historical Background: After being in Jackson County, Missouri for only 3 weeks, Joseph Smith and other church leaders had accomplished much, including holding a church conference, the settlement of newly arriving saints, identified the site of the New Jerusalem and dedicated the new temple site, dedicated the land for the inheritance of the saints, and received several new revelations. Now, the Lord asks Joseph and the leaders of the church to return to Kirtland, Ohio. Recap: The leaders of the church are instructed to return to Kirtland, Ohio. They are reprimanded for not preaching the gospel on their journey from Kirtland, because of the fear of wicked men. They are commanded to preach along the journey back, some by St. Louis and others by Cincinnati. Don't idle away time nor bury your talents. Section 61 - Historical Background: As Joseph and 10 others returned to Kirtland, they travelled the Missouri River by canoe. Near tragedy struck on day 3 when one canoe capsized and Sidney Rigdon nearly drowned. W. W. Phelps witnessed the destroyer upon the waters while the others heard the awful, satanic noises but did not witness it with their eyes. This greatly troubled the group and Joseph sought counsel from the Lord. Recap: The brethren are chastened for trying to return home too swiftly rather than preaching along the way. Sidney Gilbert and WW Phelps are excused to return immediately home [so they can fulfil their calling to purchase a printing press and transfer it to Independence]. In these last days, the waters are cursed by John the Beloved, and the land is blessed by the Lord. The saints are to journey by land unless the canal is available. Be of good cheer, I am in your midst. Section 62 - Historical Background: On the journey to Cincinnati, Joseph met some of the Elders on their way to Independence which was joyous to everyone. Recap: The Lord is watching the elders on their trek to Zion and is pleased with their testimonies. They are to continue to Zion and then return home, preaching along the way. Section 63 - Historical Background: Upon the return to Kirtland, Joseph, Sidney Rigdon and Oliver Cowdery were immediately engulfed by many questions by the saints and new converts. Joseph inquired of the Lord regarding the purchase of lands and many other concerns and questions. Recap: The wicked and rebellious in the church must repent and become humble or will otherwise be destroyed. Seek not for signs, for they only come by faith. Those guilty of sexual sin must repent or will not be worthy of the Spirit and be destroyed. The obedient will have God's Spirit. The saints are to assemble in Zion, but not in haste lest the inhabitants there become overwhelmed. The Lord prophesies the persecution that will come and war and bloodshed. The Morley farm should be sold and the money sent to Zion. Whitney should keep his store in Kirtland for now. Glorious times are to come, yet the wicked will be plucked from the church. God will not be mocked.
Revelation Dates: May – July 1831 Revelation Places: Ohio and Missouri Section 51 - Historical Background: As the many converts from New York came to Kirtland Ohio, Bishop Partridge had been assigned to organize and care for them according to the law of consecration, described in section 42. Needing assistance from the Lord, the bishop asked Joseph to seek further guidance from the Lord. Recap: The bishop is to appoint each family an appropriate portion of property according to his specific needs. Once appointed, a deed of ownership must be given him. A storehouse of money and goods should be kept by the bishop for the needs and wants of the people. Section 52 - Historical Background: A church conference was called in Kirtland which about 2,000 members attended. The events included ordaining several High Priests. During the conference, Joseph Smith rebuked evil spirits residing in 2 men. Recap: The next conference is announced to be held in Missouri, which must be consecrated for the faithful. 28 Elders are called on missions to Missouri, two by two. The Lord gives the pattern necessary to be a righteous missionary. Section 53 - Historical Background: After calling all the elders on missions in the previous section, Sidney Gilbert was not included. Hurt by this, Gilbert approached the Lord in prayer and then to Joseph for a revelation of what work he can do while the others went to Missouri. Recap: Sidney Gilbert's prayers have been heard. He is to forsake the world, become an Elder and preach repentance. He is to accompany Joseph Smith to Missouri. Section 54 - Historical Background: The saints from Colesville, New York contracted with Leman Copley to stay on his property. Copley was to consecrate his property to the church, but he apostatized and broke his covenant. Joseph sought counsel from the Lord. Recap: It would be better for those Saints who break covenants with the Lord to have been drowned in the sea. But those who honor their covenants will be rewarded. The saints are to flee Ohio and move to Missouri. Be patient in tribulation. Section 55 - Historical Background: William W. Phelps was converted through the Book of Mormon and sought a revelation from the Lord as to what work he should do. Recap: Phelps is commanded to be baptized, receive the Holy Ghost and be ordained an Elder to preach repentance. He is assigned to Missouri to assist Oliver Cowdery as printer. Section 56 - Historical Background: As Thomas B. Marsh was preparing to go to Missouri as commanded, his indolent companion, Ezra Thayre, was not enthusiastic. Joseph inquires what the Lord would have him do. Recap: Those who pretend to be saints but are rebellious will not be saved but will be cut off from the church. Marsh is given a new companion. All members are called to repentance. Section 57 - Historical Background: The focus of the saints was on gathering to Zion in Jackson County, Missouri. The town of Independence Missouri was a backward, frontier town of about 3,000 people. The Lord announces the place for Zion and the temple. Recap: The land of Missouri is appointed as the center place of Zion and the New Jerusalem. The exact place of the temple is appointed. The saints are to purchase all the regions of the land. Assignments are made to various church leaders. Speed is of the essence. Gathering saints will be granted land according to the law of consecration.

Revelation Dates: March 8, 1831 Revelation Places: Kirtland, Ohio Section 46 - Historical Background: New converts were now pouring into Kirtland, Ohio. Many had preconceived ideas from their former churches how weekly services should be held. Joseph inquires of the Lord how He wants it done. Recap: The elders attending the meeting should preside and conduct the meeting according to the Spirit. All people should be welcomed to attend, but only worthy members should partake of the sacrament. All members should seek earnestly the best gifts of the Spirit. Some of these gifts are to witness of Jesus Christ, having a believing heart, strong leadership, discernment, wisdom, knowledge, healing, faith, prophecy, and tongues. All gifts come from God for the benefit of mankind. Section 47 - Historical Background: Up to this time, Oliver Cowdery had been acting as Church historian. Joseph Smith called John Whitmer to replace Oliver and John agreed to do it, but only if Joseph Smith received divine guidance from the Lord to call him to the work. Recap: John Whitmer is called to be the recorder of church history and additionally to replace Sidney Rigdon to transcribe revelations and future revisions of the scriptures. Section 48 - Historical Background: A large number of new converts were about to arrive from New York. A member named Leman Copley made a covenant allowing the arriving saints to occupy a piece of his land. Copley apostatized and broke his covenant, forcing these weary saints off of his land. Other saints were occupying a piece of land owned by Isaac Morley. Joseph inquired of the Lord how to acquire lands for the many incoming Saints. Recap: Temporary quarters are necessary for the incoming Saints until the church moves west. If necessary, purchase or lease some land, but conserve funds for purchasing land in Zion. The Elders will be sent to Missouri and it will be revealed to them where Zion will be established and these lands should be purchased, laying the foundation for the City of Zion. The bishop will have the responsibility to assign properties to each family as their needs require.

Join us as we discuss the teachings of Dr. D. Todd Harrison on the Doctrine and Covenants 27-28Dr. Harrison's lesson examines Doctrine and Covenants sections 27 and 28, emphasizing Christ's ongoing testimony of the restored Church and the divine calling of Joseph Smith. Section 27 clarifies the sacrament's symbolic nature and anticipates a future messianic feast, while affirming the roles of key figures in the Restoration. Section 28 addresses prophetic authority, establishing Joseph Smith as the sole recipient of commandments for the Church, and instructs Oliver Cowdery regarding his teaching responsibilities and preaching to the Lamanites. The lesson concludes with an invitation for all to embrace the gospel, whether new, returning, or seeking deeper commitment.

Send us a textFrom Come Follow Me: "April 3, 1836, was Easter Sunday. After helping administer the sacrament to Saints in the newly dedicated Kirtland Temple, Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery found a quiet place behind a veil and bowed in silent prayer. Then, on this sacred day when Christians everywhere were commemorating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the risen Savior Himself appeared in His temple, declaring, “I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain” (Doctrine and Covenants 110:4). What does it mean to say that Jesus Christ is “he who liveth”? It doesn't just mean that He rose from the tomb and appeared to His disciples in Galilee. It means that He lives today. He speaks through prophets today. He leads His Church today. He heals wounded souls and broken hearts today. So we can echo the words of Joseph Smith's powerful testimony: “After the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony … which we give of him: That he lives!” (Doctrine and Covenants 76:22). We can hear His voice in these revelations, witness His hand in our lives, and feel “the joy this sentence gives: ‘I know that my Redeemer lives!'” (Hymns, no. 136)."Support the Show! Section 30 - Historical Background: Following the second conference of the Church at Fayette, the Lord provided revelations to several new converts who were anxious to know what God would have them do. This revelation was to three of the Whitmer brothers, David, Peter Jr. and John. Recap: David Whitmer, one of the three witnesses, is admonished for fearing man more than God and for not giving heed to the Spirit. Therefore he is to remain home and ponder upon his situation. Peter is called on a mission to the Lamanites with Oliver Cowdery, who will be the senior in the companionship. John was called on a mission to declare the gospel within the area and was counselled not to fear man. Section 31 - Historical Background: Thomas B Marsh was a recent convert from Massachusetts who was baptized in August 1830 by David Whitmer. In September he attended the conference in Fayette and received this personal revelation from Joseph. Recap: The Lord is pleased with the dedication of Thomas B Marsh and he is promised blessings for him and his family. He is called on a mission to people whose hearts will be opened by God. Branches of the church will be established by Thomas. He is not assigned to a specific area but is to follow the Spirit where to go and preach. Section 32 - Historical Background: Parley P Pratt was a former minister who read the Book of Mormon and knew it was true. He was baptized in early September, 1830. He immediately went to his brother Orson who immediately accepted the gospel. Within a month Parley received this revelation along with Ziba Peterson. Recap: Parley was called on a mission to the Lamanites along with Oliver Cowdery and Peter Whitmer. Ziba Peterson was also called to join them. They are reassured that God will be in their midst. Section 33 - Historical Background: Ezra Thayre and Northrop Sweet were mediocre members and lacked in zeal, yet asked for this revelation pertaining to their purpose. Recap: Ezra and Northrop are called to preach. The Lord encourages them go forth and open their mouths. Faith, repentance, baptism by water and fire constitutes the rock of the restored church. They are to use the Book of Mormon as their manual. Section 34 - Historical Background: At the age of 19, Orson Pratt was introduced to the gospel by his brother Parley. He immediately embraced the doctrine and was baptized. He traveled to Fayette to meet the Prophet Joseph and received this revelation. Recap: Christ is a light which the wicked don't comprehend. Orson is called to preach to the wicked before Christ comes again, which will be quickly. Section 35 - Historical Background: Sidney Rigdon was a Baptist minister who became discouraged and moved to the Campbellite church. He was introduced to the Book of Mormon and after 2 weeks was baptized. After meeting Joseph he received this personal revelation, including the commandment to be Joseph's scribe. As a result of Sidney's fulfillment of this revelation, we have much of the recorded Doctrine and Covenants. Recap: Sidney Rigdon, like John the Baptist, has prepared the way for the Lord. God calls upon the weak and unlearned to respond to His call. The Lord testifies to Sidney of the prophetic calling of Joseph. Sidney is to watch over Joseph and support him. He is commanded to be Joseph's scribe and forsake him not. Section 36 - Historical Background: Edward Partridge arrived in Fayette with Sidney Rigdon and wanted to meet Joseph to decide for himself if he was a prophet. When Sidney introduced him the spirit immediately confirmed to Edward that Joseph was indeed a prophet of God. Edward desired immediate baptism but Joseph needed rest and baptized him the following day. Sidney asked Joseph for the Lord's guidance and the following revelation was given for Edward (see Section 35 for Sidney's revelation). Recap: Sidney Rigdon is instructed to lay hands upon Edward and confirm him a member and give him the gift of the Holy Ghost. Edward is then called to preach the Gospel, as are all those who desire to be sent forth with a singleness of heart.
In this episode of Come, Follow Church History from Scripture Central, Lynne Hilton Wilson and guest Mark Staker talk about a variety of fascinating topics in Church history. The revelation to move to Ohio is received. Missionary efforts involving Oliver Cowdery, Peter Whitmer, Ziba Peterson and Parley P. Pratt result in the conversion of many Saints including Sidney Rigdon. Fascinating events from the beginning of the Church in Kirtland are explained. And the often overlooked story of an early African American revelator in the Church named Pete is described in detail. Don't miss this episode.
This is a discussion of a lecture by Dr. D. Todd Harrison, who is a prominent and influential leader in the LDS Church. The lecture itself focuses on early revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants, specifically sections 23-26. These sections contain divine instructions and callings for individuals like Oliver Cowdery, Hyrum Smith, Samuel Smith, Joseph Smith Sr., and Joseph Knight, emphasizing their specific duties within the early church and highlighting the importance of humility and service. Additionally, the revelations addressed to Joseph Smith and his wife Emma Smith offer guidance, promises, and assignments related to the translation of the Book of Mormon, comforting Joseph, expounding scripture, selecting hymns, and adhering to God's commandments.
Send us a textFrom Come Follow Me: "Revelation was still a relatively new concept for the Saints as the Restoration continued to unfold. Early Church members knew that the Prophet Joseph Smith could receive revelation for the Church. But could others? Questions like this became critical when Hiram Page, one of the Eight Witnesses of the gold plates, believed he had received revelations for the Church. Many faithful Saints believed that these revelations were from God. The Lord responded by teaching that in His Church “all things must be done in order” (Doctrine and Covenants 28:13). This meant having only one person “appointed to receive commandments and revelations” for the entire Church (Doctrine and Covenants 28:2). Others, however, could receive personal revelation for their part in the Lord's work. In fact, the Lord's words to Oliver Cowdery are a reminder to all of us: “It shall be given thee … what thou shalt do” (Doctrine and Covenants 28:15)."Support the show! Section 27 - Historical Background: It had been four months since the organization of the church and the saints had been partaking of the sacrament using bread and wine. After the baptism of Emma Smith along with others, a meeting was held for the confirmation to take place followed by the partaking of the sacrament. However, there was no wine available for the sacrament so Joseph set out to obtain some. He had not gone far when he was met by a Heavenly messenger who gave him this revelation directly from the Savior. Recap: The emblems used in the Lord's sacrament can be something other than bread and wine as long as they are partaken with an eye single to the glory of God and done in remembrance of the body and blood of Christ. Section 28 - Historical Background: August of 1830 was a challenging time for both Joseph and Emma. The lies and persecution toward Joseph in Harmony reached the heart of Emma's father who now refused any further refuge for Joseph and Emma. Harsh persecution forced Joseph and Emma to flee Harmony and move into the residence of the Whitmer's home in Fayette. No sooner had they arrived when they learned that Hyrum Page, one of the eight witnesses, had claimed to be receiving revelations through a certain stone. Some members, including Oliver Cowdery, had been deceived by these claims. Joseph inquired of the Lord and received this revelation, directed to the deceived Oliver Cowdery. Recap: The Lord declares that only His appointed prophet has the keys to receive revelation for His church, for all things must be done in order. He commands Oliver Cowdery to remedy the deceit which has spread due to the stone used by Hiram Page, and to counsel with Hiram privately. Once this Satanic deceit has been settled, Oliver is to go on a mission to the Lamanites

It also speaks about the roles of various heavenly messengers and apostles, such as Peter, James, and John, and introduces the metaphor of putting on the "whole armor of God" for spiritual protection. Section 28 addresses church governance and prophetic authority, highlighting that Joseph Smith is the authoritative voice for receiving revelations for the church, while Oliver Cowdery is counseled to follow him, and Hiram Page is corrected for claiming revelation through a seer stone. Abstract: Two recent reviews of By Means of the Urim & Thummim: Restoring Translation to the Restoration by Jeff Lindsay and Brant Gardner seriously misrepresent the book's argument. Perhaps most significantly, they largely sidestep the book's central thesis that the statements by Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery that the Book of Mormon was translated from […] The post Joseph and Oliver Told the Truth about the Translation: A Response to Brant Gardner's and Jeff Lindsay's Reviews first appeared on The Interpreter Foundation.

They look at the use of Section 20 in the original Pearl of Great Price. They explore the importance of this section in our ability to have the Church function. They also look at the relationship between Section 21 and Section 20. They also talk about God's instructions to keep records in the Church and the impact that has had on us. They also look at God's description of Joseph Smith's roles, including his being a translator, and the way Joseph receives the word of God as if from His own mouth. We are grateful for our Executive Producer, B. Fisher, and for our generous donors, and for Launchpad Consulting Studios who produce the podcast, and for Rich Nicholls, who composed and plays the music for the podcast.
Did you know the Book of Mormon laid the foundation for how the early church was organized? When the Lord told Oliver Cowdery is told to “rely upon the things which are written”, it wasn't just a reminder for Oliver in the 1800s! Let's talk about how Moroni's writings are a guide for each of us today, from how to conduct certain ordinances and more!
Send us a textFrom Come Follow Me: "There are many different ways to try to measure a person's worth. Talent, education, wealth, and physical appearance can all affect how we evaluate each other—and ourselves. But in God's eyes, our worth is a much simpler matter, and it is stated clearly in Doctrine and Covenants 18: “Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God” (verse 10). This simple truth explains so much of what God does and why He does it. Why did He instruct Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery to establish the Church of Jesus Christ in our day? (see verses 1–5). Because the worth of souls is great. Why does He “command all men everywhere to repent” and send Apostles to preach repentance? (verse 9). Because the worth of souls is great. And why did Jesus Christ suffer “death in the flesh” and “the pain of all men”? (verse 11). Because the worth of souls is great. If even one of these souls chooses to accept the Savior's gift, He rejoices, for “great is his joy in the soul that repenteth” (verse 13)."Support the show!ww.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouthGospel Topics Essay on theosis:https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics-essays/becoming-like-god?lang=engThoughtful Faith episode referenced in this conversation:https://youtu.be/M-8Bnb32nIg?si=LXLWe8UU95tOk-X-(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. February 24-March 2The Doctrine and Covenants is a book full of affirmations that individuals count—that each of us is important in the sight of God. Message after message is to individuals, some we have heard of like Oliver Cowdery or Hyrum Smith, and some to less familiar people like Leman Copley or Northrop Sweet, but then the Lord often adds this note: What I say unto one, I say unto all. But if that is not enough to let us know WE count; He gives us these 12 words in our lesson this week: “Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God.”

Send us a textFrom Come Follow Me: "Most people around the world have probably never heard of Harmony, Pennsylvania. The Lord often chooses humble places for the most significant events in His kingdom. In a wooded area near Harmony on May 15, 1829, John the Baptist appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. He placed his hands on their heads and conferred the Aaronic Priesthood upon them, calling them “my fellow servants” (Doctrine and Covenants 13:1). John the Baptist was the trusted servant of God who baptized the Savior and prepared the way for His coming (see Matthew 3:1–6, 13–17). To these two young men in their twenties, it must have been humbling, perhaps even overwhelming, to be called John's fellow servants. At the time, Joseph and Oliver were relatively unknown, much as Harmony was. But service in God's work has always been about how we serve, not about who notices. However small or unseen your contribution may seem at times, you too are a fellow servant in the Lord's “great and marvelous work” (Doctrine and Covenants 14:1)."Support the Show!www.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouth(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These sections emphasize faithfulness, humility, and charity. Additionally, in Joseph Smith—History, it narrates the experiences of Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, including the visit of John the Baptist, who conferred upon them the Aaronic Priesthood on May 15, 1829. This event enabled them to perform baptisms and was a significant step towards the restoration of the priesthood authority on earth. They experienced profound spiritual manifestations and prophetic insights following their baptisms, solidifying their mission amid local opposition.SPARK 1: The Great Physician================OBJECT LESSON: “Give Heed unto My Word”: Quick and Powerful SwordsEtsy Printable Link: [COMING SOON!]SPARK 2: OF GREATEST WORTH===================================OBJECT LESSON: “The Most Worth unto You”: Take Hold of Your Testimony BubblesSPARK 3: A LIVING WITNESS=============================OBJECT LESSON: “You Shall Testify of Them”: Stand As a Witness Card GameEtsy Printable Link: [COMING SOON!] CHAPTERS=========00:00:14 INTRO00:04:13 QUICK GLANCE00:08:45 SPARK 1 INSIGHTS00:15:58 SPARK 1 OBJECT LESSON00:19:32 SPARK 1 QUESTIONS00:21:38 SPARK 2 INSIGHTS00:29:40 SPARK 2 OBJECT LESSON00:35:17 SPARK 2 QUESTIONS00:37:54 SPARK 3 INSIGHTS00:45:59 SPARK 3 OBJECT LESSON00:51:04 SPARK 3 QUESTIONS00:53:35 WRAP UPLINKS=====WEB: https://www.gather.meckmom.comETSY: https://www.etsy.com/shop/meckmomINSTAGRAM: Instagram @meckmomlifePODCAST: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST DISCLAIMER=================================This podcast represents my own thoughts and opinions. February 17-23I love the natural unfolding of the restoration. Much of what happens is a result of questions that come to the minds of Joseph and Oliver in the course of the translation of the record. The more carefully you study the translation and the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, the more you are amazed at the gift and power of God that was given to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery as they translated the record. These are two very young men: Joseph is 23 and Oliver is 22 years old!

February 3-9 Just a few months after the 116 manuscript pages of the Book of Lehi were lost, a young man arrived in Manchester, New York. He had dark brown eyes, a slight build, a prominent lower jaw, high forehead and, as one described, a roman nose. He was hired to be a teacher in New York's Joint District 11. The small frame schoolhouse was located just about a mile south of the Joseph and Lucy Mack Smith Farm on Stafford Road. In this first teaching job, he had 107 little “scholars.” Little did he know he would become a teacher for millions yet unborn. His name…was Oliver Cowdery.
