Darrach Ó Duibh has such an interesting story, and I wanted to speak with him to discuss his incredible life journey and the profound, unexpected insights he gained while translating the Book of Mormon into the Irish language longhand. He's an ancient language researcher, polyglot, and textual critic based in Ireland. Having previously worked as a bibliographic researcher for FARMS (now the Maxwell Institute) under the legendary LDS scholar Hugh Nibley, Darrach started this translation project 20 years ago while bedridden after a honeymoon car crash. In April 2020, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a “Now You Know” video explaining the gold plates—the foundation of the Book of Mormon. But how complete is that explanation?In this video, we walk through the Church's presentation line by line, comparing it with historical sources, primary documents, and modern scholarship. What emerges is a pattern: simplified storytelling, selective framing, and major unanswered questions.We examine:The evolving accounts of Joseph Smith's First VisionThe timeline inconsistencies surrounding Moroni's visitThe physical plausibility of the gold plates (weight, size, transport)The seer stone in a hat vs traditional translation narrativeThe “caractors” document vs stylized “reformed Egyptian”The role (or lack thereof) of the plates during translationContradictions and complexities in the witness testimoniesThe absence of archaeological support for large metal recordsAnachronisms within the Book of Mormon itselfIf the gold plates were meant to serve as tangible evidence, why were they rarely used in the translation process—and why were they never made broadly available for examination?This video doesn't just critique—it compares claims to evidence, and narrative to historical record.

Where can we plainly see Faith in practice? Luke 17:5-6 -the parable of the mustard seed, 7-10- the master of the household and his slave and verses 11-19- the story of the 10 Lepers illustrate what faith is and what it isn't. Receiving, understanding, acting on personal revelation and becoming the sons and daughters of Jesus Christ is the object of our faith. Humility is the ounce of prevention from faith becoming self exalting. Obedience is the path on which the blessing of sanctification is received. As we receive a blessing from God in gratitude we glorify him. Alma 32 gives the blueprint of the experiment of faith that we may partake of the fruit of spiritual rebirth. Faith precedes the miracle (Ether 12:12). When a person walks the path of obedience hearkening to the words of Christ they undergo a transformative process even a mighty change of heart (Mosiah 5). Or in other words, the endowment of charity from God to the individual as a result of their entering into and keeping covenant with Him is manifested (Moroni 7:25-26, Mosiah 13:1-9, Mosiah 17:12-20). Phil illustrates these principles of exercising faith from the accounts of the lives of Abraham, Enoch, and Moses (Book of Jasher 9, 1 Book of Enoch 81 & 84, 2 Enoch 33:1-8, 44:1-3 and 66:1-7). This episode is part 32 in a series going through the story of the Book of Mormon.This episode covers chapters 59-63 of the book of Alma. Captain Moroni wrote to Pahoran, judge of Zarahemla to accuse him of neglecting his duties. Pahoran wrote back to explain that he's been backed into a corner and the king-men faction took over the government. The new king of Zarahemla made a deal with the king of the Lamanites to let them take over everything outside Zarahemla.Moroni came to Pahoran's aid and helped him settle the civil problem. He could then get proper supplies and soldiers for the Nephite armies to reclaim captured cities. Eventually, the Nephites had a period of peace again. Some of the heroes retired and passed away. Helaman's son Helaman, Jr. ultimately received the brass plates. When the Lamanites realized their king Amalickiah was dead, they retreated to Mulek. They appointed Ammoron, Amalickiah's brother, to be the new king. Two thousand Ammonites took an oath to fight for liberty and made Helaman their captain.Moroni and Ammoron tried to negotiate by letters, but they only make each other angry. Captain Moroni is determined to retake fortified Nephite cities that the Lamanites captured. The Nephites managed to retake several cities through various military strategies. When Helaman badly needed reinforcements and supplies from Zarahemla, he got very little. In part 14 of this continuing series, Phil teaches that the measure of faith is shown by what it accomplishes, and that faith, hope, and desire work together in a divine cycle. Drawing from Moroni 7 and Moroni 10, Phil explains that belief and trust in Jesus Christ generate hope, and hope gives rise to stronger faith. A sincere heart and real intent, meaning we are willing to accept whatever answer the Lord gives will create the desire that leads to the exercise of powerful faith. Through this process, and by the power of the Holy Ghost, Father reveals truth and corrects our conclusions as we willingly align our will with Him. Phil teaches that hope through the Atonement is only possible when we offer the sacrifice of a broken heart and contrite spirit (Moroni 7). Examples from scripture show how humility transforms weakness into strength (Ether 12), including Enoch, who received the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost, overcame his weakness in speech, and exercised a greater faith seeing through the veil with an “eye of faith” (Moses 6; Ether 12:19). Phil also explains the pattern of receiving higher priesthood authority, noting the First and Second Orders of the Melchizedek Priesthood bestowed upon prophets such as Enoch, Moses, and Nephi by the voice of the Father (Moses 6, Moses 1 & 3 Nephi 11). Phil highlights that throughout scripture; Helaman 5, Alma 14, 3 Nephi 19, Acts 2, disciples of Christ exercise exceedingly strong faith in Jesus Christ, resulting in the reception of the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost, miracles, and other transformative spiritual experiences. He reminds us that revelation is never casual; it requires obedience, sacrifice, and preparation. Miracles have not ceased (Moroni 7:36–39), and the same power held by ancient servants of God is available to all who exercise great faith, hope, and trust in Christ. Phil concludes that the Lord continues to call “other servants” (JST Matthew 21; D&C 101, 112, 103), and that Joseph Smith stands as the prophesied servant raised up in the last days. You Don't Have to be Ready, Just Willing by Autumn Dickson Joseph Smith was 38 years old when he was murdered in Carthage Jail. He received the First Vision at age 14. He began translating The Book of Mormon at age 21, and he completed it at age 24. The Church was also organized when he was 24. The Kirtland temple was built, the Nauvoo temple began, temple ordinances were restored, the work of salvation for the dead was set in motion, numerous revelations were received, and missionaries were sent abroad. He had the vision at age 14, and he was taught annually by Moroni, but his true ministry began at the age of 21 as he started translating The Book of Mormon. His ministry was 17 years. Here is a verse in the Doctrine and Covenants that was written in the announcement of his death. Doctrine and Covenants 135:3 Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it. In the short space of twenty years, he has brought forth the Book of Mormon, which he translated by the gift and power of God, and has been the means of publishing it on two continents; has sent the fulness of the everlasting gospel, which it contained, to the four quarters of the earth; has brought forth the revelations and commandments which compose this book of Doctrine and Covenants, and many other wise documents and instructions for the benefit of the children of men; gathered many thousands of the Latter-day Saints, founded a great city, and left a fame and name that cannot be slain. He lived great, and he died great in the eyes of God and his people; and like most of the Lord's anointed in ancient times, has sealed his mission and his works with his own blood; and so has his brother Hyrum. In life they were not divided, and in death they were not separated! Could anyone else do what Joseph did? I don't know. I believe that the Lord can enable anyone to do anything if they're willing, but were any of us willing? I really don't know. I believe so, but I don't know. I think of great men like the apostles who stood with Christ during his ministry. I think of Old Testament prophets and New Testament missionaries. I think of the stripling warriors who learned from their own mothers and followed in obedience. I think of pillars of faith in latter-day church history. I think of other men who were placed in different roles who were willing to do what God has assigned them to do, men like Martin Luther King Jr. Beyond that, I think there are a great number of quiet individuals who went about doing the Lord's will in their own lives even though it brought about no acclaim. I know plenty of women who are likewise incredible if that was the organization that the Lord had chosen. But He chose Joseph. I'm not sure why God places us in the roles that He does. I'm sure there are many reasons for His decisions, but I'm not sure what they are. He probably doesn't explain Himself because the reasons are situational. For example, He had specific roles that needed to be filled, and perhaps there were multiple people who could have filled those roles, but He also looked at us as individuals. What were the lessons we needed to learn in order to become what He wanted us to become? If we want to learn what the Lord wants us to learn and if we want to bless the world in the most powerful way available to us, there are a couple of characteristics of Joseph's that we can develop. The number one characteristic that came to my mind today is the willingness to follow His will no matter where it takes us. I believe that all the other attributes we could possibly develop in order to be prepared to fulfill our roles here on earth can all contribute to this one significant characteristic: we follow Heavenly Father and what He wants for us. If we can stand before God, (or better yet, kneel), and tell Him, “I'm not sure what you want me to do. I don't know what I need to learn in order to do it. I don't know who I need to become in order to do it, and I'm sure there will be many times that I feel that I can't do it. And yet, I want Thou to show me the way and make me who I need to be. Lead me. I will follow.” You don't have to be ready for your various roles yet. I repeat, you don't have to be ready. You just have to be willing. He can take care of the rest. The only thing you can truly give Him is your willingness to follow Him and do what He asks. He is capable of speaking to you in a way that you can understand and helping you know what you need to know. He can help you develop the specific testimonies you're going to need to carry you through. He can mold you. Sure, you'll make mistakes, but that's why we start today. We give Him time to work with us so we have had time to practice what we need to be. I was thinking of some grand moment in which you could promise God to follow Him, and yet, many of us already made that promise a long time ago at 8 years old. Some of us made that promise when we were a bit older, and maybe some of us have yet to make that promise. Perhaps we have already made the promise, but we are only just now feeling prepared to truly hand over our will. Lucky for us, we have this thing called the sacrament where we renew those promises every single week. How powerful could we become if we simply whispered to the Lord (and to ourselves) each week that we were willing to follow wherever, willing to learn what was necessary, willing to become what God wanted for us? When I think of Joseph's willingness, I don't think it was just one decision. I think it was a million decisions. When he would look at the vast amount of work he needed to do, he would turn to the Lord for guidance about what to prioritize. Then he would have faith that the Lord would enable him to do what was absolutely necessary. There was so much that needed to happen to restore Christ's church upon the earth; there is only so much he could accomplish with the time he was given on earth. So it wasn't about accomplishing everything; it was about just doing what God had for him each day. I love and honor Joseph Smith for his willingness to jump in and devote his time and life to what God wanted, whether that was building an impressive temple or living in squalor for four months in a prison. Most of all, I love and honor Joseph because he set the foundation a long time ago for me to find Christ. Joseph did more, save Jesus only, to save mankind. I think it's important to note that Jesus was the one who did the most. And wasn't this His defining characteristic? He was willing to do what the Father sent Him here to do. His ministry was only four years, He spent some of that time playing with children or taking quiet time to Himself. You would think that having only four years available to change the world would make someone rush a bit more, but that's not what the Father needed. Christ simply did what the Father wanted and because of that, His four year ministry changed everything. I testify that each of us have roles in the work of salvation. I testify that the Lord is capable of helping you fulfill that role if you simply tell Him that you're willing and ask Him to lead you along. I testify that you don't have to be capable or incredible, just willing. I testify that He is more than capable, loves you, and wants to include you. A key figure who accelerated the historical crisis for both the Tanners (who left the group in 1962) and Pauline's church was Wes Walters, a Presbyterian minister from Marissa, Illinois. Walters was asked to write an article on Mormons for Christianity Today. His detailed research focused on testing Joseph Smith's claims against tangible historical records, particularly those surrounding the First Vision. Walters' findings: the great revival and the subsequent fighting over converts among the denominations did not happen in 1820. Instead, significant church growth (hundreds of converts) occurred between 1823, 1824, and 1825. This discovery forced a complete recalibration of the chronology, as it meant the First Vision and the subsequent Moroni visits leading up to the plates could not logically fit the existing timeline. Walters' small pamphlet, New Light on Mormon Origins, caused such a disruption that it "threw the Mormon Church into a tizzy," forcing LDS historians to travel back East to conduct their own major studies. Walters is credited by Sandra Tanner as being a key factor in pushing the LDS Church into serious historical scholarship. Magic Connection: A Bridge Too Far While Walters' dating research was shocking, his discovery of the 1826 trial documents cemented the crisis. Pauline's group, following David Whitmer, already accepted the story that Joseph Smith used a "rock" in his "hat" to translate the Book of Mormon, aligning with the "seer stone" narrative. However, the 1826 trial confirmed Joseph Smith's involvement in money digging, associating the seer stone with divination and magic practices—the occult that the Christians in Pauline's group firmly rejected. The group found this connection irreconcilable: They questioned why God would use an instrument associated with magic. They noted that Joseph Smith seemed to bypass the instruments God allegedly supplied (the plates) and continued using the same rock used in divination. The transition from seeking treasure (magic) to seeking revelation (religion) looked too "fishy," suggesting it was merely a "switching of what you're using this stone for". The fact that the same individuals involved in drawing magic circles and searching for treasure were the same first converts to Mormonism was deeply troubling. Pauline Hancock's Church Voted to Disband The Church of Christ (Bible Book of Mormon), founded and led by Pauline Hancock, emerged as a unique splinter group focused on returning to what they believed was "1830 Mormonism"—a faith centered purely on the Bible and the Book of Mormon, devoid of later revelations (like the Doctrine and Covenants past 1830) and "Aaronic, Melchizedek Priesthood ideas". However, this small community, known for meeting in the “Basement church” in Independence, ultimately discovered that even their foundational scripture, the Book of Mormon, could not withstand intense historical scrutiny, leading to its dissolution years after Pauline Hancock's death in 1962. The Vote & Dissolution Faced with this overwhelming historical evidence, the Church of Christ had to make a choice regarding their "litmus test"—the Book of Mormon. In 1972, approximately a decade after Pauline's death (she died in the summer of 1962), the church took a formal vote on whether to retain the Book of Mormon as scriptur...

Sunday, 2 November 2025   So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” Matthew 13:57   “And they stumbled in Him. And Jesus, He said to them, ‘A prophet, he is not dishonored if not in his fatherland and in his house.'” (CG).   In the previous verse, the questions about Jesus continued as the people asked about His sisters, wondering how He had obtained His wisdom and mighty working abilities. Because of their confusion, it next says, “And they stumbled in Him.”   The meaning is that they were tripped up. Their mental disconnect would not allow them proper understanding of how someone so common and who was a seemingly normal child among them had grown into such a mighty intellect with the ability to accomplish such great things.   Their assumption, though faulty, is not uncommon. To them, humble beginnings equated to a humble existence henceforth. Instead of looking at Jesus as a prodigy, they probably looked to Him more as a charlatan or an underhanded opportunist. However, Matthew records Jesus' response to them, “And Jesus, He said to them, ‘A prophet, he is not dishonored.'”   A new word, atimos, is seen. It is derived from the negative particle a and the word timé, value. Thus, it extends to honor, esteem, dignity, etc. Jesus' beginning words of His response indicate that prophets are normally honored for their prophetic ability.   They stood with kings, were esteemed by the people, and were sought out by all classes of people in times of need. However, there was often a notable exception. Jesus continues with, “if not in his fatherland and in his house.”   A prophet who only became a prophet later in life by the call of the Lord could expect to be ignored by those he grew up with and who once interacted with him regularly. People would not understand how someone they knew and hung around with, just a common Joe, could somehow have a special connection to God.   This is the intent of Jesus' words, which were probably a proverbial expression concerning such things.   Life application: As noted above, the reasoning of the people is commonly faulty. There are innumerable ways people can suddenly excel who seemed to have no special background, potential, or abilities.   For example, from time to time, someone may get bumped on the head and suddenly have the ability to do incredible feats in math, memory, invention, etc. A prophet or preacher may have a sudden calling on his life that changes the entire course of his existence.   In the case of the latter, faith in God demands that people take stock of such a thing and consider it. Of course, the chances are good that a person is making a false claim about such a religious encounter, but the only way to get to the bottom of that would be to test him, observe his conduct, and check with others who may have intimate knowledge of the situation.   However, others may be in on the scam as well. Joseph Smith claimed he had received the Book of Mormon from the angel Moroni. Brigham Young supported him in his false teaching and helped perpetuate and grow Mormonism. So one has to be careful with such things.   There is a great example of the thought presented here right in Scripture –   “And when Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. And he declared to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.” Acts 9:26, 27   Paul resided in Jerusalem. People there knew of his conduct toward those in the church. After his conversion, his change was a hard sell to those who previously knew him. This is to be expected. However, there is a point when such things need to be accepted as true and valid, like Paul's conversion, or forever rejected, like Joseph Smith's false claims.   The evidence behind the claims should be sufficient to make such a determination. Pay attention to such things as you interact with others. Your initial assessment may be wrong. Likewise, your lurking suspicions may be borne out when a false narrative is exposed. Be wise and discerning, and as John admonishes, “test the spirits” (1 John 4:1).   O God, we pray for Your hand of protection to surround us from false teachers. At the same time, we pray for discerning minds that can identify them so that we are not led astray by them. There are so many who claim they know the “mysteries” of how things work by You when in fact, they are just making stuff up. Help us to see the truth and keep far from such people. Amen.

The Path to Critical Inquiry Sandra Tanner's journey into questioning Mormon orthodoxy was significantly shaped by her mother, who was already deep into researching early Mormonism in the late 1950s. Sandra's mother insisted on finding chapter and verse for religious claims, refusing to simply take the word of "the brethren" or rely solely on church manuals, often disrupting Sunday school classes with her inquisitive mind. Sandra's first met Jerald Tanner in the 1950s. He introduced her to David Whitmer's thinking and the ideas of Pauline Hancock's group, the Church of Christ-Bible & Book of Mormon). This set the stage for intense study. A major focal point of this research was the nature of God and how the changing views of God affected the narrative of the First Vision. Sandra noted that the Book of Mormon, in its earliest form, presented a view of God that did not align with the current Mormon understanding of a separate Father and Son. Conflicting First Vision Narratives As Sandra, Jerald, and her mother poured over available documents, they focused on inconsistencies surrounding the First Vision: Fawn Brodie's Observation: The first edition of No Man Knows My History had raised the issue that the earliest references to an experience before the 1823 angel Moroni visitation often seemed to refer only to an angel or messenger, not the Father and Son. The Historical Record Change: Sandra's aunt acquired a copy of Andrew Jensen's Historical Record (from the 1880s), which contained an account where Joseph went into the woods to pray and a "messenger, an angel" appeared to him. However, her aunt's copy was a later reprint (circa 1890 or 1891) that changed the text to say "the Christ appears to him," raising questions about when the shift occurred and why the Father was excluded in that version. Sandra and her associates reasoned that if the First Vision story was constantly evolving, they needed to see the genesis of the account. The Letter & Missing 1832 First Vision Account In the early 1960s (circa 1961), Sandra, Jerald, and her mother formulated a letter outlining these historical questions to be sent to then-Church Historian, Joseph Fielding Smith. Sandra simply assumed that an initial written account must exist and requested a photocopy of the "original Joseph Smith handwritten account of the First Vision". Little did Sandra know that some people, like her friend Lamar Peterson, did know about a "strange account" (the 1832 version) that had been shown to him by Levi Edgar Young, who was sworn to secrecy by Joseph Fielding Smith. Sandra's request, though based on assumption, might have caused immediate alarm in the Church Historian's Office. Sandra speculates that Joseph Fielding Smith had previously cut the 1832 account out of the ledger book because he realized it was problematic. When Smith received Sandra's letter, he may have assumed she possessed insider knowledge. To get ahead of any arguments about hiding evidence, Smith subsequently taped the pages back into the ledger book. "I think he cut it out back in the time of Levi Edgar Young. I mean,
