Joseph Fielding Smith, a towering figure in the 20th-century Latter-day Saint landscape, is often remembered as a theologian and Church leader. But his long tenure as Church Historian also positioned him as a key interpreter of Mormon history, an area where his approach offers a fascinating case study in the relationship between faith, perspective, and the writing of the past. Our recent discussion drawing from the sources explored this complex legacy, highlighting Smith's contributions alongside critical insights into the nature of historical objectivity and bias. https://youtu.be/EyAoFsz9mn0 Church Historian When Joseph Fielding Smith became Church Historian, he faced the significant challenge of organizing sprawling, uncatalogued collections. He initiated processes that professionalized the church archives, particularly after World War II, by creating finding aids, dividing materials into collections, making lists, and microfilming documents. However, from the perspective of a professional academic historian, Smith's method of engaging with historical sources differed markedly. He treated certain documents, like the Bible and those produced by figures he considered revelators such as Joseph Smith Jr. and Joseph F. Smith, as entirely reliable and didn't subject them to critical interrogation. This lack of "suspicion of sources"—the practice of asking who wrote a document, when, and what biases they might have—is highlighted as a key distinction between Smith and professional academics. His influential book, Essentials in Church History, exemplifies this approach, treating "official LDS sources" uncritically, yet it became a foundational text shaping LDS understanding of their history for decades. This brings us to a core concept in academic historical study: the non-existence of "objective history." Writing academic history itself is considered a bias. The aim for professional historians is not to eliminate bias, which is seen as impossible, but rather to be acutely aware of bias—both in the sources they use and in their own perspectives—and to account for it in their work. This requires adhering to methods and principles developed over generations of scholarship. Mature scholarship involves being frank about one's own point of view and how it might influence interpretations. Trying to pretend one is objective is seen as a mistake. Richard Bushman is presented as an example of a scholar who openly discusses his background and how it might shape his work. RLDS Polygamy Skeptics The sources also reveal how bias can influence not just conclusions, but the very questions a historian thinks to ask—or doesn't ask. While "motivated reasoning" (steering sources to a predetermined conclusion) exists, it might be less common than bias manifesting in the kinds of questions that arise from a historian's background and positionality. The discussion used the example of Richard and Pamela Price's hypothesis regarding the influence of Cochranites on the Quorum of the Twelve and the practice of polygamy. While the Prices found evidence of contact between the groups, they reportedly don't account for the significant chronological gap between this contact and the public announcement of polygamy. This failure to ask about or explain this gap is suggested as stemming from their predisposition to believe the Quorum of the Twelve were the originators of polygamy. Most Influential Writer Joseph Fielding Smith was a prolific writer. Beyond Essentials in Church History, other notable works include The Way to Perfection, a narrative history of humanity from pre-existence to afterlife, where he explicitly stated his views on race. He also authored Man His Origin and Destiny (1954), which he considered his most important book, responding to higher criticism of the Bible and the theory of evolution. Perhaps his most widely read work during his lifetime was his "My Question" column in the Improvement Era church magazine,
Joseph Fielding Smith: evolution was not something he thought highly of. The son of Joseph F. Smith and grandson of Hyrum Smith, was a prominent figure in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As an apostle from 1910 and later Church President, he became known for his strong defense of traditional doctrines, often clashing with those who sought to reconcile faith with modern scientific and academic thought. https://youtu.be/8Kq1TVQBQtE Don't miss our other conversations about this book! https://gospeltangents.com/lds_people_historical/joseph-fielding-smith/ Joseph Fielding Smith Evolution One of the most famous conflicts involved the theory of evolution and the age of the Earth. Smith staunchly opposed the idea of an old earth, particularly the notion of human-like creatures or pre-Adamites living before Adam and Eve. His core objection wasn't simply to evolution itself, but to the idea that there could have been death before the Fall of Adam and Eve. Smith believed that death entered the world because of the Fall, and if death existed before then, it would undermine the necessity and efficacy of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. This principle of no death before the Fall was central to his arguments. This perspective led to direct clashes with contemporaries like James E. Talmage and John A. Widtsoe, who were generally more open to scientific ideas. The most notable dispute involved B.H. Roberts's book manuscript, The Truth, The Way, The Life, which attempted to reconcile a very old Earth and the possibility of pre-Adamites with the Genesis account. Roberts proposed that Adam and Eve were the first humans with souls, not necessarily the first biological humans. As a member of the church's publications committee, Smith absolutely rejected Roberts's ideas, protesting their publication to the Quorum of the Twelve and the First Presidency. While this conflict brewed behind the scenes, Smith publicly denounced the idea of an old Earth and pre-Adamites in a speech. In response, Talmage gave a talk endorsing the possibility of an older Earth, highlighting some public disagreement among church leaders. Ultimately, the First Presidency chose not to endorse either side and requested both men cease public conflict on the issue, preventing Roberts's book from being published at that time. Smith, however, outlived many of his contemporaries and later published his own book, Man His Origin and Destiny, which strongly attacked Darwinism and the higher criticism of the Bible. Family Trauma Smith's career as a defender of traditional beliefs was significantly shaped by his upbringing and early experiences. His father, Joseph F. Smith, was called to testify before Congress during the Reed Smoot hearings. During these hearings, the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (RLDS), led by descendants of Joseph Smith Jr., saw an opportunity. Richard Evans, an RLDS apostle, issued broadsides accusing the LDS Church of corruption, denouncing Brigham Young for originating polygamy and blood atonement, and claiming the RLDS Church was the true successor to Joseph Smith. This became a "family feud.” Joseph F. Smith was infuriated and asked his son, Joseph Fielding Smith, to refute Richard Evans. This charge launched Joseph Fielding Smith into a career of research and writing, focusing on apologetics – the defense of religious beliefs. He published pamphlets refuting Evans, arguing that polygamy originated with Joseph Smith Jr., not Brigham Young. This pamphlet feud led to exchanges in newspaper op-ed pages and solidified Smith's path. He began working in the Church Historian's office during this time and soon became Church Historian, serving for decades until he became Church President in 1970. Fight with Academics His long tenure as Church Historian meant he had significant influence. Unlike contemporaries like Talmage, Widtsoe, Joseph Merrill, Adam Bennion, and B.H.

Abstract: This paper examines Joseph Smith's approach to translation, using the Book of Abraham as a case study to explore the interplay between divine revelation and human participation in scriptural production. While the Book of Abraham incorporates both ancient and modern elements, its unique synthesis resists simple categorization as either an unblemished Abrahamic autograph or […] The post Joseph Smith Jr. as a Translator: The Book of Abraham as a Case Study first appeared on The Interpreter Foundation.
Joseph Smith Jr. was an American religious and political leader and the founder of Mormonism and the Latter Day Saint movement. Publishing the Book of Mormon at the age of 24, Smith attracted tens of thousands of followers by the time of his death fourteen years later. The religion he founded is followed by millions of global adherents and several churches, the largest of which is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Smith professed a belief in Jesus, so why did a man, known as the "Wickedest Man On Earth" and vehement anti-Christian, Aleister Crowley, so enamored with him? Joel is joined this week by ex-Mormon, Heidi Luv from Unfiltered Rise Podcast, to explore the depths of this Smith-Crowley connection. They walk through the beginnings of Mormonism and Smith's use of Enochian magick to summon the angel Moroni similar to the workings of John Dee and Edward Kelley. They peel back the layers of the Mormon hierarchy and its parallels to Freemasonry. Finally, they expose the hero worship of Joseph Smith by Aleister Crowley and why a known occultist would find a "religious" man like Smith so intoxicating. Smith claimed to have had a series of divine revelations that led to the restoration of the true Christian church. Despite him looking into a hat with rocks to receive these revelations, his teachings and leadership laid the foundation for one of the fastest-growing and influential religious movements in American history.Trigger Warnings: Sexual AbusePedophilia Religious Trauma Spiritual Abuse ManipulationFahlohttps://myfahlo.comUse Code: LACIBEAN20Try Javy Today!Affiliate Link:https://snwbl.io/javy-coffee/LACI33468Coupon Code: LACI33468 Deadly Faith PATREON: https://patreon.com/DeadlyFaithPodcast?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=copyLinkDeadly Drip Merch https://www.bonfire.com/store/deadly-drip/?utm_source=facebook_messenger&utm_medium=store_page_published_share&utm_campaign=deadly-drip&utm_content=default Need A Podcast Editor? Send us a Text Message.video podcast hereIn part 2 we get into asking the hard questions. What do we do now? Who has authority? Should we be baptizing? Can we take and serve sacrament? Matt from @MormonRescue joins us along with Mark, former LDS Bishop, as we discuss authority from the RLDS/LDS perspective. Does authority come from the person laying hands on you because someone laid hands on them that had hands laid on them back to Joseph Smith Jr.? Where did Lehi and Nephi get their "authority"? What kind of baggage has been added to this word over the last 200 years and can we step out of our culture and look at this idea that permeates our church? People refuse to speak with other people based on the curch sign on their door ,which goes back to authority. Others are banned from participating in camps and reunions based on their authority and what church they go to. Joseph F. Smith was born in 1838 to Hyrum Smith and Mary Fielding Smith. Six years later both his father and his uncle, Joseph Smith Jr., the founding prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, were murdered in Carthage, Illinois. The trauma of that event remained with Joseph F. for the rest of his life, affecting his personal behavior and public tenure in the highest tiers of the LDS Church, including the post of president from 1901 until his death in 1918. Joseph F. Smith laid the theological groundwork for modern Mormonism, especially the emphasis on temple work. This contribution was capped off by his "revelation on the redemption of the dead," a prophetic glimpse into the afterlife. Taysom's book traces the roots of this vision, which reach far more deeply into Joseph F. Smith's life than other scholars have previously identified. In Like a Fiery Meteor: The Life of Joseph F. Smith (U of Utah Press, 2023), Stephen C. Taysom uses previously unavailable primary source materials to craft a deeply detailed, insightful story of a prominent member of a governing and influential Mormon family. Importantly, Taysom situates Smith within the historical currents of American westward expansion, rapid industrialization, settler colonialism, regional and national politics, changing ideas about family and masculinity, and more. Though some writers tend to view the LDS Church and its leaders through a lens of political and religious separatism, Taysom does the opposite, pushing Joseph F. Smith and the LDS Church closer to the centers of power in Washington, DC, and elsewhere. Joseph Stuart is a scholar of African American history, particularly of the relationship between race, freedom rights, and religion in the twentieth century Black Freedom Movement. Join Valerie and special guest Paul Toscano in this part four (last in this series) focused on untangling some of the complexities of The Book of Mormon. In this episode Val questions Paul on a variety of topics involving The Book of Mormon, including its connection with Joseph Smith Jr., her own wrestles with the fraught relationship between leadership & followership; the roles, expectations, and hopes of a spiritual leader, and so much more. Here are a few highlights of Paul's thoughts from their conversation: All mystical texts, trancelike experiences, and visionary accounts are strange, uncomfortable, and often implausible—including the very birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. God has shown humans mysteries through a variety of “weird” manifestations with large numbers of eye witnesses throughout time. Such anomalous events might be less jarring to those who have a broader world view and higher respect for the idea that God has revealed Truth in “strange” ways throughout time and place and to many people throughout history. Placing the Book of Mormon within the context of the countless interactions between God and humans throughout time would help LDS people make sense of both its significance and yet that it is simply just one of countless anomalies in the grand scheme of God's workings. It is especially challenging to conceptualize this Book as part of a self-insulating faith tradition that insists that they have little to learn from other traditions and eras. Regarding disappointment with leadership past and present, we are all desperate for “strong men” save us from the trouble of the wrestle that comes with faith journey. We naturally want to lean on those who preferably make it unnecessary for us to do the work of going directly to God about what is truth, wisdom, and loving. One of the greatest tests of true discipleship is to learn to forgive God…for the pain of our suffering…for Their not preventing harm to those we love at the hands of those in power; for allowing good people to do bad things and bad people to do for things… This kind of discipleship forces us to learn how to hold the tension of opposites and demands that (if willing) we be stretched beyond our known capabilities. This process makes us holy. Finally, Paul shares these views: Salvation is not a community experience. Salvation is an individual experience and it happens in the act of saving wounded things. The individual saves the church, not the other way around. The individual saves the family, not the other way around. ____________________________________________________ Contact Valerie at info@valeriehamaker.com or jump onto latterdaystruggles.com to JOIN Valerie's Wednesday 7p JUNE Group (a very few slots left) or her AUGUST 2023 support and processing faith expansion group [Tuesday May 2023 group is FULL]…Join now & meet some lifelong friends & spiritual allies! __________________________________________________ NEW!! Who is Joseph Smith Jr. really? What is his significance in world history and in the eternities? “I feel like shouting Hallelujah, all the time, when I think that I ever knew Joseph Smith, the Prophet whom the Lord raised up and ordained, and to whom he gave keys and power to build up the Kingdom of God on earth and sustain it” --Brigham Young This episode explores the role of the prophet Joseph Smith as the head of the dispensation of the fullness of times.
Today there are more than 16 million Mormons around the world. The Mormon Church is one of the fastest growing religions worldwide and it's the third wealthiest. Pretty impressive for an organisation started by a conman from New York less than 200 years ago… Joseph Smith Jr was 25 when he declared himself a prophet who spoke to God & Jesus Christ, published an updated bible he'd “transcribed” from an ancient text (the Book of Mormon), and founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1830. The use of face masks in classrooms made “no significant difference” in COVID-19 infection rates, according to a new study. A cohort of researchers from several universities and hospitals in Spain came to the conclusion by analyzing COVID-19 transmission rates, age, and the mandated use of face masks in classrooms across the region of Catalonia. The study – “Unravelling the Role of the Mandatory use of Face Covering Masks for the Control of SARS-CoV-2 in Schools: a Quasi-Experimental Study Nested in a Population-Based Cohort in Catalonia (Spain)” – compiled data from 1,907 schools with a total of 599,314 pupils during the first term of the 2021 academic year. It was included in August’s edition of the peer-reviewed journal Archives of Disease in Childhood, which is a part of the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Group. Though COVID-19 variants such as Omicron occurred outside of the timeframe of the study, researchers maintain it is “unlikely that the effectiveness of the mask mandate measure will increase with a more transmissible variant.” “We analysed routinely collected health data to compare the incidence of SARS-CoV-2, secondary attack rates and the effective reproductive number among school children, comparing those without mandatory face covering masks (FCM) and those with FCM during the first term of the school year 2021–2022, to assess the effect of FCM mandates on SARS-CoV-2 transmission within schools,” explains a summary of the work. Researchers focused on comparing children in the last year of preschool (P5) and the first year of primary education, as the younger group had no face mask mandate, whereas the older group did. “The main findings of the study show no significant differences for children in the last grade of preschool (P5) and the first year of primary education in COVID-19 transmission indicators during the study period, despite their difference in FCM mandate and the strong age dependency of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in schools,” explained researchers. “In conclusion, FCM mandates in schools showed no significant differences in terms of transmission. Conversely, we found that age is a key component explaining transmission in children,” summarized researchers. The Spanish case study follows additional studies demonstrating the failed efficacy of face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19, even exacerbating the spread of the virus in certain demographics. https://www.theepochtimes.com/study-americans-own-more-than-415-million-firearms_4737834.html?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=BonginoReport Study: Americans Own More Than 415 Million Firearms Americans now own more than 415 million firearms, according to Georgetown professor William English. This was a key finding of the National Firearms Survey that was conducted last year by Denver-based research firm Centiment at the request of English, a professor at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. English is a political economist interested in ethics, education, and public policy. The survey, which is part of a larger book project, is reportedly the largest ever undertaken regarding U.S. gun owners. The survey was administered to about 54,000 U.S. residents aged 18 and older, focusing on 16,708 gun owners who were provided with in-depth questions about their ownership and use of firearms, including defensive uses. The purpose of the survey was to “shed some light from a social-scientific view on the reality of how guns are used and owned in America today,” English said during a Sept. 11 podcast produced by The Reload, a publication focused on the policies and politics surrounding firearms. “And the attempt was to make it the largest survey of gun owners yet done, particularly so that we can get statistically informative information in all 50 states. Probably the last survey of this scope was done back in 1994 … but it’s now more than a quarter century old,” he said. English teased the findings of the survey in a May 18 summary on an academic website called Social Science Research Network but updated the summary on Sept. 13 to add the 415 million figure for gun ownership. Because the U.S. Census Bureau now estimates the U.S. population to be 333 million people, the 415 million figure means that there are now about 1.25 firearms for every person living in the United States. Of those 415 million firearms, Americans own about 171 million handguns, 146 million rifles, and 98 million shotguns, according to the update. About 39 million individuals, or 48 percent of gun owners, have owned magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. Some jurisdictions regulate magazine capacity. The newly released information helps to put facts that English previously released from the study into a broader context. The study found that the United States has an overall rate of adult firearm ownership of 31.9 percent, which suggests that more than 81.4 million Americans aged 18 years and older own firearms. The average gun owner owns about five firearms, and handguns are the most common type of firearm owned, the summary states. Among gun owners, 57.8 percent are male and 42.2 percent are female. About 34.3 percent of whites own firearms, compared to 28.3 percent of Hispanics, 25.4 percent of blacks, and 19.4 percent of Asians, according to the summary. Nearly a third of gun owners, or 31.1 percent, reported in the survey that they have used a gun to defend themselves or their property, often more than once. The report summary estimated that firearms are used defensively by their owners in about 1.67 million incidents each year. Handguns are used in 65.9 percent of defensive incidents, although in most such incidents no shot was fired. About a quarter (25.2 percent) of defensive incidents took place inside the gun owner’s home, and a little more than half (53.9 percent) happened outside their home but on their property. Almost one in 10 (9.1 percent) of defensive gun uses took place in public and about one out of 30 (3.2 percent) took place at work, according to the summary. The report comes after a landmark Supreme Court ruling on June 23 finding for the first time that there’s a constitutional right to carry firearms in public for self-defense. The court also found that gun regulations must be deeply rooted in U.S. history if they’re to survive constitutional scrutiny, prompting a raft of new lawsuits across the country challenging gun control measures. Applications for gun permits in states that require them have been rising following the court decision. President Joe Biden is pushing for a federal ban on so-called assault weapons after Congress approved new gun control measures in June, including financial incentives to encourage the enactment of state-level red-flag gun confiscation laws. The research paper also comes as major credit card companies, at the behest of gun control activists, are implementing what critics characterize as backdoor gun control. The International Organization for Standardization recently announced that one of its subcommittees had decided to create a new merchant category code for firearms, which were previously under the general merchandise category. Critics say the policy change will make it easier for governments both to track and discourage firearms purchases and could lay the groundwork for a national gun registry. That is not a typo. Rather than devoting federal resources to improving our national infrastructure, Biden is wasting millions to address the problem of “racist roads.” What makes a road racist? I’m just the messenger here, but according to MSNBC, so-called “racist roads” being targeted by Biden were “designed to facilitate white flight and deprive black communities of housing and commercial opportunities.” Fellow white dude Pete Buttigieg, who occasionally makes appearances pretending to be the Transportation Secretary, confirmed that $104.6 million in federal funds from last year’s bipartisan infrastructure bill will be used to dismantle Interstate 375 in Detroit. “This stretch of I-375 cuts like a gash through the neighborhood, one of many examples I have seen in communities across the country where a piece of infrastructure has become a barrier,” Buttigieg told the Associated Press. “With these funds, we’re now partnering with the state and the community to transform it into a road that will connect rather than divide.” https://www.foxnews.com/media/don-lemon-roasted-royal-expert-answer-britain-paying-reparations-ready And now this! Conservatives on Twitter found the clip hilarious, as it depicted Lemon getting swift pushback for trying to promote the narrative that the British crown owes reparations for slavery. https://twitter.com/i/status/1572145367512190978 - Play Video Observers noted Lemon meekly switching topics without protest after Fordwich’s unexpected response And now… it’s time for my favorite topic, sports! Fan Arrested After Attempting to Jump into Pit with Texas Longhorn Mascot ‘Bevo’ https://www.breitbart.com/sports/2022/09/19/watch-fan-arrested-after-attempting-to-jump-into-pit-with-texas-longhorn-mascot-bevo/ Few things are less advisable than jumping into a pit with a 1500-plus pound Texas Longhorn. But, then again, mix passionate fandom with eleventy bottles of beer, and ill-advised decisions will ensue. Such was the case at the Texas-UTSA game on Saturday when a fan attempted to jump into the pit with the University of Texas’s mascot, Bevo. The mascot’s handlers tried to wave the fan off but to no avail. Thankfully, a Texas DPS officer intervened and prevented the fan from getting himself killed. It’s unclear what the fan’s intentions were, but it’s pretty clear what Bevo’s intentions would have been if he had felt the slightest bit threatened. The last time Bevo felt an unwelcome presence, it nearly cost “UGA,” the Georgia Bulldog mascot, his life. https://twitter.com/i/status/1546151851346874370 - Play Video Now don’t worry folks, Georgia’s mascot, UGA the bulldog was just fine, and you can find the link to these videos in the show notes. But the point stands, don’t mess with Texas… This has been your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief. If you liked today’s show, go ahead and click that share button down below. How we all try to DENY our personal shadows in creative ways that estrange us from owning and integrating our shadow parts 3. A case study in shadow integration: King David self confronts with the help of the prophet Nathan 4. A case study in shadow non-integration: Joseph Smith Jr. does not self confront (in spite of Oliver's attempts to be his "Nathan") 5. In March 2020, a daguerreotype thought to be of Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the LDS Church, was discovered in the effects of a direct descendant. If it is the genuine article it would be the first and only known photo of Smith in existence. Why does that matter?
In the Spring of 2020, Community of Christ Apostle Lachlan Mackay was contacted by his uncle, Dan Larsen, about a Smith family locket that had been hidden away for decades. At first, Lach didn't believe the image inside could be Joseph Smith Jr, but after over two years of research, Lach and historian Ron Romig are compelled to believe the locket does contain the first ever daguerreotype of Joseph Smith Jr. Their research and finding are published in the Spring/Summer 2022 John Whitmer Historical Association Journal. This lesson is for the week of August 8-14, with Bryan Ready Host.Brought to you by http://www.cedarfort.comBryan was an ordained Southern Baptist Pastor with aformal theological education. He firmly believed that Joseph Smith was a false prophet. In 1979, Bryan and his mother were driving home from a fireside featuringmembers of the Osmond Family. He had listened to their testimonies of the gospel of Jesus Christ and was impressed. He turned to his mother and said, "Mom, I want to be a Mormon." Her answer was a firm and adamant "No!"Over the next thirty-five years, Bryan became a committed follower of Jesus Christ-and a staunch anti-Mormon. But then things changed. His heart began to soften as he opened his mind to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. His faith would face the ultimate test of conviction-to quit his ministry and seek baptism. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Union University, Jackson, TN, as well as a Master of Divinity and Master of Theology from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary graduate school in Louisville, KY. His master's thesis was entitled, William Heth Whitsitt: Insights into Early Mormonism. Prior to joining the Church in 2016, he studied Church history and theology for over thirty years. He is a member of the Mormon Historical Association. As a Southern Baptist minister, he engaged in dialogue with members of the Religious Studies Faculty at Brigham Young University (BYU); and he facilitated dialogues between Southern Baptists and local Church leaders. In 2018, Bryan was invited by BYU's Office of Religious Outreach to give a presentation on Intersections of LDS & Baptist Doctrine: Perspectives from an LDS Former Baptist Pastor. Bryan has been married for twenty-six years and is the father of six children.Members of the church believe in the Bible and the Book of Mormon.
