Shayla Racquel is a master storyteller and powerful manifestor. This talented director is no stranger to overcoming odds - diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease at birth and a stroke at the mere age of 12, her battle with this illness is what brought her closer to the art of storytelling, which unlocked her love for filmmaking. Through prayer, hard work, and sticky notes, this talented director is creating her own path in Hollywood. In this episode, she opens up about her role on ABC's The Wonder Years and the legacy of the late director John Singleton. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/purposeproducerpodcast/support
Meet Shayla Racquel! I first discovered Shayla through her web series Quarter Century, which depicted the lives of a group of Black friends making their way through love, career, and life overall as post-grads in my resident DC/Maryland/Virginia area. Years later, in 2019, I'd meet her in person at the Pan-African Film Festival showcasing her newest short film, Riverment. The film is a gripping story that follows two generations of Black Civil Rights activists, the opposing yet similar ideologies that come to head in the wake of police brutality on college campuses. Shayla and I talk about her roots in theater, what it was like making her first short film, the film festival circuit, and her life as a growing screenwriter and director. i hope you enjoy our conversation on all things movies! This episode of Secret Sauce deals with the way the world seems to always shit on our (black) sheroes. From Lisa Durden being fired for keeping it real on Fox News to the police once again murdering a black woman who needed help, this is a pattern that needs to stop. For our interviews, meet Shayla Racquel the filmmaker behind Riverment which explores the evolving struggle for black rights and how that struggle affects families through generations. We also cackle with the ladies from Black Girl Squee, a podcast hosted by Inda & Didi that is dedicated to celebrating the achievements of Black girls and women.
