A new Irish documentary celebrating music, friendship and second chances is coming to Clare this week. Once We Were Punks, directed by Frank Shouldice, tells the story of four school friends from Cavan who formed a punk band in the 1980s, before life took them in different directions, only to reunite decades later and rediscover the dream. Following a colourful and varied path, including a 5-year stint in oil exploration deep inside the Arctic Circle, Gleeson made his feature film debut as a writer/director with 2003's Cowboys & Angels. A youth comedy/drama set in his native Limerick, Cowboys & Angels was released in cinemas by Buena Vista International (Disney). The film won eight international film awards including Best Screenplay at Newport Beach (U.S.) and two Gold Medal Awards at Giffoni (Italy). The New York Times commented, [the film] 'offers a fresh mix of open-minded intelligence and a heartfelt point of view,' while The Chicago Tribune commented, 'Stack "Cowboys" against most of the fare American studios offer young adults and it's meatier by far'. Gleeson's next film which he also wrote and directed, the crime drama The Front Line, was released in cinemas in 2006 also through Buena Vista Intl. In 2008, Gleeson sold his time travel sci-fi spec screenplay The End of History to Sony Pictures. He followed this up over the next decade with several more spec sales and commissions to studios including Walt Disney Pictures, Fox Searchlight, Focus Features, 20th Century Fox, Mattel Studios and Paramount Pictures. In July 2017, Gleeson wrote and directed Don't Go starring Stephen Dorff and Melissa George. In May 2019, Fox Searchlight Pictures released Tolkien, a Chernin Entertainment production based on Gleeson's original screenplay about the legendary author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien. Now, the semi-autobiographical Once Upon a Time in a Cinema is about to hit cinemas. Director Kelly Park is from Philly. She attended Quaker schools during her early years, influencing her life perspective. After launching her career as a marketer and project manager in the technology and advertising industries, she decided to switch things up. Inspired by her actress mother to listen to her "funny bone", she took a leap of faith, and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in comedy. She began studying at Second City and The Groundlings, which led to commercials, short films, and sketch comedies. However, she soon realized being in front of the camera wasn't what fed her soul, teaching was. This eventually would lead to teaching children and young adults the fundamentals of acting and improv. Kelly quickly became one of the most sought-after acting coaches in television, working on numerous pilots and television shows for Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, Amazon, and Netflix. This led to her ultimate passion, which is directing. She debuted on the Emmy-nominated Netflix show ALEXA & KATIE and directed several episodes including the series finale. From there, she went onto direct numerous shows such as THE NEIGHBORHOOD, FAMILY REUNION, THE UPSHAWS, NIGHT COURT, FRASIER, GRACE & FRANKIE, THE GAME, STATION 19. It didn't stop there for Kelly, she became a Pilot Director for COUNTRY COMFORT (Netflix), BLACK DON'T CRACK (ABC), LOPEZ VS. *FULL SPOILERS AHOY FOR MURPHY'S RANCH, ALL HOPE ABANDON YE WHO ENTER HERE*I interview Mikey Riva, Jr., the director of MURPHY'S RANCH, which premiered yesterday as part of the Unstoppable Shorts program at the Sundance Film Festival in Los Angeles.The program highlights films made by and including artists with disabilities, bringing their stories and perspectives to the screen.MURPHY'S RANCH stars Hosea Chanchez and Lee Pugsley (a low-vision actor) as adopted brothers working as pool cleaners for high-value clients in the Hollywood Hills. They arrive at a new job. The client's a dismissive asshole - typical L.A. shit. But what gives them pause is the client's teenage foster child. It's not the social awkwardness but rather, the hesitation with which he discusses not wanting to be forced out into this camp by the "dad." The more they talk, the more nervous they get, the more they question if they need to intervene.MURPHY'S RANCH is a welcome dose of sun-drenched '80s buddy cop nostalgia, imbued by Riva's sense of comedy and wit. I liken it to how Edgar Wright put his own spin on genre tropes with HOT FUZZ. By the time the short ended, I was pumping my fist, ready for the story to continue. I'm happy to report that a full feature is Mikey's plan for the future.This was a fun hang. Hell, the movie's 12 minutes long and this interview is 90, so you can deduce that we had a ton to talk about: Mikey's origins, his choices, the chemistry between Chanchez & Pugsley, the importance of healthy community on a film set. I've known Martin Kramer since he was a kid, so it's pretty exciting to see how accomplished he is now. At age 25, as a director, producer, writer and actor. We reminisce about his interest in comedy—taking classes as a high school student and his pivot to film, influenced by his lifelong best friend, Leo Rauf. Martin went to Concordia University in Montreal and fell hard for film making. He speaks enthusiastically about the videos he's made recently for Leo Rauf's band Big Leather—they are well done and highly original. Martin's also done quite a bit of acting at this point, starring in a commercial for the Baycrest Foundation for which won a Young Guns silver lion at Cannes. As director of the Star Trek: Picard pilot, Hanelle became the first woman to launch a Star Trek series in its 53-year history. In 2021, she won an NAACP Image Award for her work on Picard. My situation was a little bit unusual in that my father kind of disappeared, and I had been making a fair amount of money as a kid, doing commercials and television and film. We needed money, and I kind of became the breadwinner. But I had this amazing world that I had access to, which was the world of the entertainment industry. My mom was supportive of my taking over and saying, "This is, I think, what we need to do." She liked the idea of moving to New York, so we moved to New York when I was 17 with a play that I had gotten. Then she got cancer and became really sick, so I had to take care of her full time. That lasted for about eight years, and then she died when I was 25. That was a rough go. At the same time, I had an amazing other world, and my other world was the world of make-believe and pretend, which I got to participate in on the soaps, with happy families and Christmases, Easters, miracles, love, weddings, and children. The pretend world that I spent a large amount of time in became a great way to balance what was sort of tragic in my real life.”Our guest today is Cady McClain. You probably know her from her long and celebrated career in daytime television. She is a three-time Emmy® Award-winning actress. "Dope Thief" is a new American crime drama television miniseries created by Peter Craig, based on the 2009 novel by Dennis Tafoya. It premiered on Apple TV+ on March 14th, and has received positive reviews for its performances from Brian Tyree Henry & Wanger Moura, writing from Craig and gritty look at the drug trade along the Eastern seaboard.
