This is the rhythm of a voice that knows how to tell a story. Anndi Jinelle Liggett didn't set out to become a filmmaker overnight. She started in the fitting rooms of Banana Republic, sharpened her instincts in the fast-paced world of network television, and ended up at Al Roker's side—not as a spectator, but as a quiet observer of how media moves. Born in Reston, Virginia, and now rooted in Brooklyn, Anndi's journey winds through French lectures at Florida State and serendipitous subway rides in New York City. She didn't knock on Hollywood's door. She cracked it open with heart, hustle, and a sharp eye for what makes us human. In this episode of Visual Intonation, we dive into how Anndi's early storytelling, yes, including a Cat-girl with superpowers, evolved into work that's both personal and piercing. She shares how characters, not just plot, drive her creative compass, and why the best stories aren't necessarily the loudest, but the most honest. Her short 'Clementine' flips the rom-com script on its head, while 'Tender Thoughts', backed by Lena Waithe, is already drawing attention from Tribeca to Urbanworld. When Anndi writes, she's writing with—and for—people who have something to say but maybe haven't yet said it out loud.We talk about France. About solitude. About filmmaking and betting on yourself. But more than that, we talk about voice—finding it, using it, and trusting that it matters. Anndi admits that's still a work in progress. But whether she's on set or scrolling Chani Nicholas for horoscope wisdom, she's learning to take up space, ask the question, raise the idea. Not because she knows it all, but because she knows herself. So pull up a chair. Whether you're a creator, a dreamer, or just someone who once tried to relax in New York and ended up on a whole new life path, this one's for you. Anndi Jinelle Liggett reminds us that storytelling isn't about fame—it's about feeling. And when it's done right, it's unforgettable.Anndi Jinelle Liggett's Website: https://www.anndijl.com/Anndi Jinelle Liggett's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/seranndipity/Anndi Jinelle Liggett's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anndijliggettSupport the showVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

In this episode of Visual Intonation, we dive deep into the world of Joseph Douglas Elmhirst, a filmmaker whose works explore the intricate intersections of nature, faith, and identity. Joseph's latest film 'Burnt Milk', commissioned by the 2023 Venice Biennale, serves as a visual prayer to Jamaica, capturing the spirit of the Windrush generation and their profound influence on British society. Join us as we explore how Joseph's art transcends mere storytelling and transforms into a potent meditation on the power of ritual, diaspora, and the complicated ties between memory and identity. Through his lens, Joseph captures the vivid contrast that defines Jamaican life—evoking the beauty and harshness of the island in equal measure. With influences from the likes of Pedro Costa and Francesca Woodman, Joseph's approach to filmmaking is as much about sound as it is about vision. He draws from his cultural roots, intertwining ancestral soundscapes, such as the sounds of tree frogs from rural Jamaica, to create a rhythm that underpins his work. We'll unpack how these sonic elements, alongside his striking visuals, build an atmosphere of timelessness, offering viewers an intimate connection to his Jamaican heritage. Joseph's journey is personal, intertwined with the story of his family—most notably his sister, Ruby Elmhirst, whose creative influence helped bring his film to the world stage. 'Burnt Milk' is not just a film, but a tribute to their shared upbringing and their mother's debut novel of the same name. We delve into the themes of motherhood and cultural heritage explored in Joseph's work, especially through the lens of the matriarchal relationships in his film 'MADA'. This project takes us on a poignant exploration of love, protection, and identity, as seen through the lives of three generations of women in rural Jamaica. Finally, we look ahead at Joseph's future projects, including his research into spiritual transference and the personal influences that continue to shape his craft. Drawing from his deep connection to both his Jamaican roots and the broader African diaspora, Joseph is poised to continue challenging and reshaping our understanding of ritual, memory, and the power of cinematic storytelling. Tune in for an insightful conversation with one of today's most captivating voices in contemporary film. https://www.criterionchannel.com/videos/burnt-milk https://www.instagram.com/josephdouglaselmhirst?igsh=MTJ3NXUwMTlqYXRmYw== https://vimeo.com/user55926319 Support the showVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

Dean Leon Anderson's passion for filmmaking ignited at the age of six when he spent a summer binge-watching an extensive VHS collection at his child minder's home. From 'Back to the Future' to 'Ghostbusters', those formative films left an indelible mark on him, and a lifelong journey into storytelling began. Dean, born in London, has carved out a unique space in the film industry, specializing in personal narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide. His deep connection to film drives him to create stories that are not only visually compelling but also grounded in raw, authentic emotion. Since launching his production company, Velvet Gold Pictures, in 2012, Dean has directed five short films and is currently focused on his debut feature-length film, 'Jasper'. His short films have premiered at prestigious BAFTA and Oscar-qualifying festivals, including Encounters and the St. Louis International Film Festival, where his latest work, 'The Mediator', starred Daniel Portman of 'Game of Thrones'. With early-stage development funding from BFI NETWORK and the recognition of multiple award nominations, Dean's work continues to challenge norms and push the boundaries of narrative storytelling. Dean's journey in filmmaking has been anything but conventional. With no initial contacts in the industry, he forged his path by assisting fellow filmmakers and absorbing every ounce of knowledge he could. His breakthrough moment came when he shadowed director Yann Demange on the set of 'Top Boy'. That experience, coupled with the mentorship of seasoned filmmakers, ignited his drive to raise the bar for his own work. This ethos of self-investment and resilience has kept Dean on an upward trajectory despite the many challenges he has faced, including navigating the complexities of funding and producing films on tight budgets. In addition to his work as a writer and director, Dean is an active member of BAFTA Connect and a recipient of the Film & TV Charity's Reel Impact Fund, recognizing his contribution to amplifying diverse voices in the industry. His perseverance and dedication to his craft have earned him a spot in the prestigious Momentum program, where he receives support for his first feature film. With 'Jasper' and other projects in the pipeline, Dean's passion for creating original, personal stories ensures that audiences will continue to experience thought-provoking and boundary-pushing films for years to come. This week we talk with the director and writer of "Mr. Sandman" Matthew I. Schmidt. Mr. Sandman: Did you ever fall asleep watching television in the living room as a child? You wake up and you were alone. You then had a long terrifying journey back to your bedroom. Going room to room, turning lights on and off as you go as to not be consumed by the dark. Hearing noises, seeing shadows. It's only your imagination... right? What if it wasn't? What if there truly is something terrifying, lurking in the dark, waiting to come and get you.
