Jared Yates Sexton and Nick Hauselman break down a week filled with corporate raiding and political theater on this edition of The Weekender. The conversation kicks off with Donald Trump nominating former housing executive Bill Pulte to replace Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence. They analyze how this appointment signals a private equity approach to governing, where state power is handed directly to the wealth class while cutting out the middle manager. The guys also take a look at the House of Representatives passing a symbolic War Powers resolution regarding Iran, highlighting the conflicting financial incentives between local used-car barons and federal oligarchs. Finally, they investigate the curious disappearance of Representative Tom Kean Jr. from Capitol Hill before diving into a nostalgic review of Planes, Trains and Automobiles and the unexpected creepiness of rewatching The Wonder Years.

The 2021 EP "These Distractions Are Constant" introduced Box Elder's raw, confessional approach to indie rock. But the self-titled debut LP, arriving April 3, 2026, marks the project's true arrival. For the first time, Box Elder is a full collaborative effort, with each band member contributing to the sound and vision. The result is an album that maintains Archuleta's emotional core while expanding the sonic palette in exciting new directions. These songs don't shy away from difficult territory. The album directly confronts mental health struggles, charting the highs and lows of anxiety, the weight of lost love, and the persistent fear of never quite finding where you belong. Four years of experiences are distilled into urgent, melodic anthems that balance vulnerability with resilience. Drawing influence from The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, The Menzingers, The Wonder Years, and Silversun Pickups, Box Elder crafts guitar-driven songs that hit with both emotional and sonic impact.Archuleta took on production duties himself for the LP, his first major self-recording undertaking. The learning curve was steep, but the result speaks for itself, an album that captures raw intimacy without sacrificing clarity or power. The striking cover artwork by Stella Vickland-Davis features mannequin pieces controlled by box elder bugs, a visual metaphor the band had always envisioned: the small, unseen forces that guide us through uncertain times.Box Elder has built their reputation through relentless touring and memorable performances. Highlights include appearances at Treefort Music Festival 2023 and Denver Underground Music Showcase 2025, multiple west coast tours, and support slots with Agent Orange and Black Lips. In May/June 2026, they'll embark on their first east coast tour with MK Naomi, bringing these songs to new audiences. After fifteen years of making music, this LP represents Archuleta's most complete artistic statement. It's proof that Box Elder has found their voice, and their place. Thanks for listening!!! Please Follow us on Instagram @hiddentracks99Pre and Post roll music brought to you by @sleepcyclespa

"It's been a slow burn. It's not like a commemoration of a time that we blew up... It's just an album that became more successful later on." Microwave sits down with Brian and Lizzie at the Salt Shed during their Much Love 10-Year Anniversary Tour. The band dives into their slow-burn rise to success following the 2022 Story So Far tour, the hilarious reality of crashing in Hot Mulligan's dorm lobby, and why they relate more to Jimmy Eat World than Midwest emo. Plus, rapid-fire reviews of new releases from The Maine, Enter Shikari, Bilmuri, and more.   Microwave is in the hot seat this week as Brian and Lizzie sit down with Nathan, Tyler, Tito, and Luke live from the Salt Shed to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of Much Love. Despite what their Wikipedia page says, the guys aren't actually influenced by Midwest emo, and they break down tracing their true sound back to Jimmy Eat World rather than Cap'n Jazz. They discuss what it has been like to watch Much Love explode in popularity after their 2022 run with The Story So Far, validating their slow-burn success in the scene. The band also reminisces about the unglamorous realities of early DIY touring, highlighted by a hilarious 2016 story where they slept on the floor of a freshman dorm lobby while Hot Mulligan's roommate vacuumed around them. Following the interview, Lizzie gets sassy as she and Brian dive into rapid-fire reviews of the latest tracks dropping ahead of the spring and summer tours, sharing their unfiltered thoughts on new music from The Maine, Bilmuri, Enter Shikari, and more.    "In 2016 on The Wonder Years tour, we stayed at Chris from Hot Mulligan's freshman dorm. We assumed it was like a house, and we showed up and were sleeping in the lobby. I woke up to somebody just vacuuming right next to me." "We weren't robbed of any of the experiences of developing a band. Some people, their s*** blows up when they're eighteen, and then they have the pressure of having to follow that up and do something just as good immediately." "We kinda got grouped in with bands that are more directly influenced by Cap'n Jazz and American Football and Midwest emo. Our influence is more like Jimmy Eat World type stuff." JOIN THE CLUB! The legal profession tends to breed a type of disposition more akin to something in Homer than The Wonder Years. A rooted posture towards adversity rather than compromise or even common ground. Much of this is taught in law school, even if indirectly, with a ruthless employment competition cycle the second 1Ls start their fall semester and that infamous curve that pins students against one another and judged over the smallest of differences. My guest today is David A. Grenardo and our topic is an antidote to this madness, which is civility. We discuss not only what it is, but more importantly, how it tends to improve the quality of the legal profession and those inside. His latest paper in the Toledo Law Review is called Why Civility?, but his record on this goes back 15 years. David is a professor of law and associate director of the Holloran Center for Ethical Leadership in the Professions. He joined St. Thomas Law in 2022. He was previously a professor at St. Mary's University School of Law (Texas) where he taught Professional Responsibility, Contracts, Sports Law, Business Associations, Civil Procedure, and International Sports Law. I spoke with Joel and Ryan to talk about their recent Midwest tour, traveling in an RV, balancing remote work while on the road, and what it really looks like to grind as an independent band in today's music landscape. We got into their songwriting process, the emotional themes behind their music, and how they have carved out their sound in the modern emo and pop punk scene. Thanks! I Hate It is a self described Mid Westcoast Emo band blending the heart tugging vulnerability of Midwest emo with the high energy punch of pop punk. Drawing inspiration from bands like Real Friends, Hot Mulligan, and The Wonder Years, they have developed a sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh. Their sophomore album Scatterbrain, released in fall 2025, has been praised as a major step forward in both songwriting and production. The band is also known for their creatively bold song titles, and on this episode I featured the track “Tonight's the Night You Hit Your Dad.” Thanks for listening and for continuing to support independent and local artists.   UPCOMING TOUR DATES    SUNFO + THANKS! Rome. 1610. A painter who sees God in the faces of prostitutes and killers is on the run for murder. His name is Caravaggio. He drinks too much. He loves recklessly. Men, women, it doesn't matter. He picks fights with swordsmen and screams at the heavens in candlelit chapels. He paints the way other men pray, except his prayers are in defiance. And the Catholic Church can't decide whether to pardon him or let the bounty hunters finish the job. This screenplay by Richard Vetere, a Pulitzer nominee and Golden Palm winner whose work has been produced by Francis Ford Coppola, follows Caravaggio from the brothels of Rome to a besieged fortress on Malta where a scarred Grand Master offers him sanctuary and something that looks a lot like love. But sanctuary has a price. And Caravaggio has never paid what he owes without bleeding for it.There are popes making deals in candlelight. Brothers hunting him across the Mediterranean for killing their own. A muse he left behind in Rome who can't wait much longer. A rival painter who despises his work and can't stop staring at it. Knights nailed to crosses and set on fire floating into the harbor at dawn. A prison cell carved into rock like a grave. And an escape across open sea in a fishing boat guided by a boy too afraid to speak. This is not a quiet period piece. This is Game of Thrones in Renaissance Italy with paintbrushes and rapiers.Craig Parker, who played Haldir in Lord of the Rings, plays Caravaggio. Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Bruce Davison plays the Grand Master. Dan Lauria, America's dad from The Wonder Years, plays the Cardinal pulling every string in Rome. Ray Abruzzo, Little Carmine from The Sopranos, plays the Pope. The cast includes Broadway veterans, stars of The Chosen, the voices behind the biggest video games on the planet, and a former Navy test pilot born in Italy playing an Italian swordsman.Fourteen actors. One genius who painted like God was guiding his hand and lived like the devil was chasing him. Turns out both were true. This is Caravaggio. This is Table Read. Judson Spence (born in Pascagoula, Mississippi) is an American pop music singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist. He originally gained fame when he released his eponymously titled debut solo effort on Atlantic Records in 1988. The album was produced by Monroe Jones and David Tickle, and executive produced by future Interscope founder Jimmy Iovine.Although he had a top 40 hit with "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" in 1988 and also had a minor hit with "Drift Away" from The Wonder Years soundtrack, Spence was dropped from Atlantic before completing his second album in 1991.After several years of struggle, Spence's composition "The Power" was covered by both Amy Grant and Cher and was also used for a national Century 21 advertising campaign. Subsequently, he recorded the indie release "painfaithjoy" in 1995.He performed with Trisha Yearwood on the Oscar nominated song "How Do I Live Without You" in 1997 and sang live with her on the American Music Awards, The Tonight Show, The Oscars, and the CMA Awards. In 1999, he released his third solo album in Japan, titled I Guess I Love It before his record label, Pioneer Music Group closed its doors. That album was produced by former Eagle Bernie Leadon. In 2000, he toured with Trisha Yearwood. The following year, Wynonna Judd cut Judson's song "New Day Dawning", and it became the title track to her album. In 2003, Spence released two albums: The Velvet Kitten Sessions, which was a mainstream collection, and Opus Dei, which was a religious-themed effort. In 2014, Spence filmed a movie about his life, Sing the Blues, that also featured his music. Now based in Birmingham, AL, Judson is constantly writing new music still.Theme song: “Hollywood Faded' by Luna Halo@treymitchellphotography @feeding_the_senses_unsensoredfacebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848www.threads.net/@treymitchellphotographyftsunashville@gmail.com

Musical Journey Through the Final Week of December: This Week in Music History As the calendar year draws to a close, the week of December 22nd through December 28th stands as a powerful reminder that music history never sleeps—not even during the holidays. In this captivating episode of “This Week in Music History,” hosts Buzz Knight and Harry Jacobs take listeners on an extraordinary journey through decades of musical milestones, tragic losses, and triumphant achievements that have shaped the soundtrack of our lives. The conversation opens with a poignant reflection on the end of another year of exploring music’s rich tapestry. Buzz muses on how, despite covering similar calendar dates year after year, they continue to uncover new stories and perspectives. “When you think about it, you would think, well, if you do it year after year, you’re going to be talking about the same things,” Buzz observes. “And the truth is, we continue to uncover new and different things.” This sentiment perfectly captures the infinite depth of music history and the endless stories waiting to be told. The Clash’s Revolutionary Voice Falls Silent December 22nd marks the anniversary of one of punk rock’s most devastating losses—the death of Joe Strummer in 2002. Born John Meller, the Clash frontman passed away from pneumonia at a time when his influence on music and culture was still reverberating through generations of artists. The Clash represented more than just a band; they were a political and social force that challenged conventions and inspired countless musicians to use their platform for more than entertainment. Strummer’s legacy as a voice for the disenfranchised and his commitment to authentic, passionate rock and roll continues to inspire artists today. A Candle in the Wind That Lost Its Luster The hosts touch on Elton John’s iconic “Candle in the Wind,” originally written about Marilyn Monroe in 1967. While the song initially resonated as a beautiful tribute, its later reworking for Princess Diana’s funeral created what Buzz describes as “overkill.” The constant repetition following Diana’s tragic death in 1997 caused the song to lose some of its original emotional impact for many listeners. This phenomenon speaks to how even the most beautiful pieces of music can become dulled through overexposure, demonstrating the delicate balance between honoring memory and respecting the power of restraint. Cheap Trick’s Complex Family Dynamics A fascinating deep dive into the internal dynamics of Cheap Trick reveals the complicated nature of band relationships and business structures. Rick Nielsen, the legendary guitar player known for his collection of hundreds of guitars—including his famous five-neck Hamer guitar—represents the performative and creative heart of Cheap Trick. The band’s 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction marked a peak moment, but beneath the surface lay complex tensions. The departure of bassist Bunny Carlos and the subsequent addition of Rick Nielsen’s son, Dax, initially appeared to follow the pattern of other famous rock family transitions, like Michael Anthony’s replacement by Wolfgang Van Halen in Van Halen. However, the reality proved far more nuanced. Buzz’s research uncovered ongoing strife within the band, though Carlos remains part of the Cheap Trick corporation—a business structure similar to Journey’s arrangement with Steve Perry. This setup ensures that founding members maintain ownership stakes even when they’re no longer actively touring, though it can also create lasting tension and legal complications. The hosts explore the darker side of band politics, touching on stories of sabotage and ego clashes. There are tales of Journey band members allegedly pulling on Steve Perry’s microphone cord during performances to make him trip—petty acts of revenge that reveal the intense pressures and personalities at play in successful rock bands. Yet they also note that time can heal wounds, pointing to Perry and Neal Schon’s apparently warm relationship at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, despite whatever conflicts may have existed in their past. The Therapeutic Approach: A New Model for Band Longevity In a refreshing counterpoint to tales of band dysfunction, Buzz shares insights from his conversation with The Head and the Heart on his “Music Saved Me” podcast. This indie pop alternative band has taken an innovative approach to managing interpersonal relationships: group therapy. Band members openly discuss how they’ve used professional counseling to navigate the challenges of creative collaboration, life on the road, and the inevitable conflicts that arise when passionate artists work together for years. This revelation prompts fascinating speculation about how many legendary bands might have avoided breakups, lawsuits, and lasting bitterness if they’d embraced therapy earlier. The deeply personal nature of musical creation—leaving your heart exposed in every performance, every recording—makes these relationships particularly vulnerable to conflict. As Harry notes, “even if it’s a drummer or a bass player, it’s still your piece of that performance of that song you left your heart out there.” The music exists forever as a testament to that vulnerability, creating permanent emotional stakes that can intensify disagreements and hurt feelings. Joe Cocker: A Voice That Couldn’t Be Contained The passing of Joe Cocker at age 70 in 2014 brings reflection on an artist whose expressive, explosive performances made him unforgettable. While 70 might not seem particularly old from our current vantage point—as Buzz and Harry, approaching 60 and 70 respectively, can attest—Cocker’s hard-living lifestyle took its toll. His performances were legendary, inspiring John Belushi’s spot-on “Saturday Night Live” impersonation that Cocker himself found hilarious. Cocker’s career highlights include his cover of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends,” which became the theme for the television series “The Wonder Years,” and “Up Where We Belong,” his duet with Jennifer Warnes from the film “An Officer and a Gentleman.” The latter song became inextricably linked with that powerful film starring Richard Gere and Lou Gossett Jr., whose portrayal of a drill instructor was genuinely frightening and contributed to one of cinema’s most memorable moments—Gere’s character’s desperate declaration: “I got nowhere else to go.” Eddie Vedder: The Humble Superstar December 23rd celebrates the birthday of Eddie Vedder, born in 1964, whose appreciation for musical history and those who came before him sets him apart in an industry often dominated by ego. The hosts draw parallels to Dave Grohl, noting how both artists exhibit genuine humility and respect for their influences. Vedder’s collaborations with Neil Young, particularly their version of “Rockin’ in the Free World,” helped establish his credibility beyond Pearl Jam circles, while his passionate renditions of The Who’s classics—especially “Love, Reign o’er Me”—have become legendary in their own right. Vedder’s versatility shines through in his cover work, from The Waiting by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to The English Beat’s “Save It for Later,” featured in the television series “The Bear.” His interpretation of Tom Petty’s “Room at the Top” particularly resonates, described as “so beautiful” in its delicate handling of Petty’s original composition. The discussion of “The Bear” opens a tangent about the show’s exceptional soundtrack curation, featuring all Tom Petty covers including a barn-burning version of “Runnin’ Down the Dream” by Larkin Poe. Despite Pearl Jam’s reputation for deep cuts and extensive catalogs—which might intimidate casual fans—the hosts acknowledge being captivated whenever they hear Vedder sing anything. His voice and interpretive skills transcend the barrier of familiarity, making even unknown material compelling. The Unsung Guitar Legends of Country Music The conversation shifts to Glen Campbell, whose passing on December 24th prompts reflection on his extraordinary but often underappreciated guitar skills. Campbell represents a generation of country musicians whose technical prowess gets overshadowed by genre stereotypes. Like Roy Clark, Campbell could do virtually anything on guitar, yet many people don’t associate country music with virtuoso instrumentalists. Campbell’s session work tells the story of his versatility—he played on albums by The Monkees, The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, and soundtracks for Elvis films and Phil Spector productions. This breadth demonstrates how the Nashville studio system produced some of the most skilled musicians in any genre, even if they didn’t always receive recognition outside country music circles. The discussion of Campbell also touches on Brian Wilson’s 1964 breakdown, a tragic moment that had long-lasting consequences for the Beach Boys and Wilson himself. The psychological damage inflicted by Wilson’s abusive father Murry Wilson—compared to Joe Jackson’s treatment of his children—demonstrates how family trauma can derail even the most talented artists. Brian’s struggles with touring and performing were just the beginning of severe mental health challenges that would plague him throughout his career. The Police: Reunion Done Right In 2007, The Police earned recognition as the year’s highest-grossing tour, thirty years after the band’s inception and 24-25 years after their previous collaboration. The reunion tour, which Buzz witnessed in Las Vegas, comprised over 150 shows worldwide and generated nearly $400 million—not a bad payday for a comeback. This success demonstrated the enduring appeal of Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland’s unique blend of rock, reggae, and new wave, proving that some artistic chemistry remains potent even after decades apart.Support the show: https://takinawalk.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nate Runkel of Yo That's My Jawn is sitting in the host chair this week, and he talks with KulfiGirls about it all: how they met, how they formed up as a band, all the work that went into their LP 'Divinity', the pain of mixing your own record (props to Joan on that one), and how they're constantly floored when people come up to tthe band and tell them how much their music means to them. It's a rare feat to get all members of a band on one conversation, and to have it flow so seamlessly. You'll have a love not only for their music, but for how they work together as a group.  KulfiGirls are playing Philly Music Fest on October 18th at Underground Arts with The Wonder Years and Caracara (who were guests way back on #230). Go to the PMF site for more info on that show and all the other shows this week at venues around Philadelphia. KulfiGirls will also be at Milkboy on November 19th, and in Brooklyn at The Meadows on December 13th. The album 'Divinity' is available now wherever you get your digital music. In honor of Philly Music Fest, all sales of our compilation, 'Want To Play A Song?: Live On 25 O'Clock Vol.1', go to strengthen the charitable giving of the festival. If you can't make it to a show and still want to support the work of PMF and their contributions to the music charities of Philadlephia, you can buy a digital copy of the compilation at our Bandcamp.
